I love the place but I wouldn't dream of going there during the Open week. First time I was there was in 1984, managed to blag free accommodation at the Uni buildings. Don't think we paid anything to get in to watch the golf either. Absolutely loved the place since then. Last time I watched golf there was 2018 at the Seniors Open for my 65th birthday. Much more relaxed, had a wonderful time.
I have only ever been to St Andrews once in my life, in 2021. I was totally smitten with the place and the vibe of the town. I can’t wait to go back and actually play there
I was fortunate enough to work 17 Open Championships between 1990-2015 for ABC/ESPN. 5 Open Championships at St.Andrew’s. Also worked 2 Women’s Open’s in 2007, and 2013. Just an incredible historical town. I’m going to enjoy watching as much golf as I can from my living room these next 4 days. What a truly historical week. God Bless you Old Tom, and Young Tom too.
That was a delight Iona. Played there in the mid 70s an experience never forgotten. Played my best most iconic drive, ever. on the 17th. With a 1 iron. Made 5 eventually on that famed road hole. When I go the memory of my round at St Andrews old course will go with me to the next great course somewhere in the cosmos. Enjoyed your input on the 150 show. Keep up the good work and keep travelling and reporting back.
Excellent work and content. The camera work and thought that has gone into the narrative are a joy. The videographer needs to find a way of illuminating your face when it's in shadow. He or she can adjust for it but thatmight over expose the background. A reflector might be too much hassle if you are trying to get the job done quickly. An led diffuser lamp on top of the camera would do it and he could dial the power up or down. The films would really benefit from larger close ups of faces and your face! That too might also improve the under exposure issue. Most people will view on small devices...so even a medium shot can be a long way with you barely visible. The narration and the golf ⛳️ is sublime!
This is so great, nice, fantastic, all of the above.. One day I hope to visit St. Andrews.. It's on my bucket list. Maybe if I get lucky. Thank you Iona.. Cheers..
Last year I finally got to play the Old Course with my Dad, it then turned out to be the last round we played together as he passed in january this year. Such a special place and now even more special than I ever could have imagined! great video, and can't wait for the Open!
Iona, what a stunning piece of work, so atmospheric and heartwarming. You have a lovely voice for television work, bringing an obvious passion to the subject. Keep up the great work 😍😍
There's no more magical golf location than St Andrews. My week there will never be surpassed, and quite possibly not equalled! And your brief video does a brilliant job of capturing this magic!
Cracking video and Iona is spot on, the vibe, the history, the atmosphere of St Andrew’s oozes out of every nook & cranny. It’s a truly amazing place to visit as a golf fan - it’s not cheap but it has to be on every golfers bucket list. Oh, it’s also got an excellent fish & chip shop which I frequented a few times too many
i got to spend short time in this wonderful town only a couple of weeks ago. every shop, barista or pub has charm! the town is alive with character. St. Andrews is a gem and your work here shows it well.
Cannot wait for Thursday thru Sunday. The history - I've been to St Andrews once outside of golf (sadly) and staring back up the 18th fairway gave me goosebumps. This video does the same again. You can't but be taken by the strong sense of identity and the knowledge of all that has taken place on that course. Simply unparalleled; majestic.
Just amazing Iona. Another superb episode. I've only ever been once to St. Andrews and it hits you straight between the eyes when you see the clubhouse and course for the first time. Mind blowing! Great job once again!!
That was utterly exceptional from start to finish. Thank you so much for this brilliant insight into St. Andrews. Outstanding production and presentation too ❤.
Unfortunately I’m unable to go to St. Andrew’s for the Open but I’m going up in August which will be my 2nd time there. I was totally blown away with place, both town & golf course, on my first visit and the people are all genuinely friendly. This video sums up St. Andrews and I’d say to anyone visiting to go fully explore the town as there’s so much to see (even if not all golf related). Love this video, thanks Iona 👍⛳️🏌🏼♂️
Great Iona. Lovely to see you with Len the lefty. A true gentleman I have spent countless hours on the practice ground with Len more chat than practice. 90 years young and still trying to improve my father is 86 exactly the same. This crazy awesome game has its claws in you for a lifetime. I can imagine being in the grave 6ft under and saying to myself. If only I opened the face a little more and swing a bit faster I'll get myself out of here.
Felt the magic at the Vatican of golf: 1993 7:00 AM. I arranged a friend to drive me out there (and leave), just walked on and was put on the standbye list. I was a student, played at 09:00 AM with 2 Americans who had Caddies, brought my half set with a PING 1-iron, broke 90 and parred 17 and 18. The travel back by train to Edinburgh I do not remember. I parred 17, I parred 17 ! I was still thinking...and... I walked where the all the greatest golfers in the world walked. Magical.
For reference: Canada was just 5 years old (and not all provinces had yet joined Canada) when the open began. St Andrew's and the open is hallowed ground zero to every golfer!
Canada 1867. First Open 1860. 162 years ago. There were 12 years when the Open wasn’t played due to wars and such. I think that’s why it’s 150 this year.
You can't be serious, this course is obsolete and if it isn't windy it's getting it's pants pulled down. It could get embarrassing for the R&A for producing a seriously dull Open, even by the usual St Andrews standards of boring.
