  • The first Starbucks in San Diego County opened in 1992 in Pacific Beach. In 1997 Americans drank about 150 billion cups of coffee a year. Before the coffee craze in the 90s the big decision was whether you wanted your coffee black or with cream and sugar. It got a lot more complicated with options like latte, mocha, non-fat, no whip, double grande, half caff, triple shot and on and on. Hal Clement arrived at a Rancho Penasquitos Starbucks bright and early and chatted with patrons about their need for coffee.
In part two, Hal visited Moka Express in Clairemont and Zanzibar in Pacific Beach. He found that not everyone went to Starbucks...there was still room for mom and pop coffee shops. He talked to Bob Sinclair who opened The Pannikin in 1968. Bob said Starbucks was good for the coffee industry.

nearly three decades later, not much has changed in terms of coffee. Only difference is Starbucks is in every street corner and long lines of cars and people in every Starbucks!
