My dj library is fine, in not open format. I manage by genres and then playlists, I do then manually by folders so that I learn my music, wouldn't have it any other way, also the gene on my meta data can't be trusted. I often put a tech house track into house, or dance into house, etc. Just because I downloaded something from with bass house as genre doesn't mean it's not tech house. It's about 10% or more of my tracks that are miss genred by the site I downloaded from. I run each track through platinum notes and mixed in key, as well I have a very different system for cue points that fits my style developed over 20 years
Great vid. Im glad you touched on looking at organising by things other then genre. In my opinion organising by genre holds a higher risk of mixes become stale and boring. If I am doing a mix and say for example tracks 1-5 are all house but what would work well as track 6 is a minimal techno track or a melodic techno track if Im only looking in the house folder for my mix I will miss putting in a track that would work well at a certain point because its in a different genre folder. A mix doesn't have to be every track in the same genre even non open formats sets you can get tracks in different genres working well together great DJs will put tracks of all different genres into a mix but still be a smooth well fitting mix (for example a Murk mix would have house, garage, techno in it). Also you are at the mercy of the meta data in tracks which lots of the time is wrong especially on certain genres for example I have listened to hundreds of tracks labelled as Tech House that are not Tech House at all they are just house (this is probably the most common wrong genre titling but to be honest it happens in all genres). As you mentioned near the end I think it would be far better organising by other things like by BPM, Energy level, Key etc. I feel organising by genre causes more problems than it solves.
The good way, i use my usb stick with the colour tags. My colour tags is all types of House music is red, Dubstep/Future Bass is blue, Drum N' Bass is green and acapella is white
This is helpful. When i open my music in Windows Media Player all the music is in alphabetical order, But when I open up my controller software (Virtual DJ) it's all in a bunch of subfolders, which makes tracks difficult to find.
Thanks Lawrence, I had no idea that Auto Import folder existed in Serato. Looks like I’ll be getting some more of my life back in future now I don’t have to upload them manually.
I DJ mostly Afro house. All my playlists are Afro house 1 2 3 or Afro tech vol 1 2 3 etc… what other ways I can separate my songs or lists … I have instrument and vocal lists too
Great video guys! With auto-import, is it possible to have Serato's auto-import pull from a different different folder as opposed to just running Safari to send downloads there? For those of us who like to send tracks through MIK, PLatinum Notes, or who have our Serato libraries on an external drive, it may not be the most efficient work flow for them to auto-send downloads into the auto-import.
Guys if I move my music from my laptop hardrive to a external hardrive what will happen exactly? All my files will be unable to be opened until I do it manually? Will I lose all my playlists and mixes? I cross reference them all the time
It really is a bad idea. When I stared my library was mostly RUclips and SoundCloud rips. I then got a gig at a club with a sound system and a couple of the songs sounded unbearable. The sooner you get a recordpool and download intro edits the faster you will get better
why my music inside my genre folder inisde virtual dj why it doesnt load my files when i click the genre folder? so so need the help anyone has this problem? i have a LACIE 5T external drive. mac air m2 laptop. on my pc loads but on my mad doesnt
These auto crates don't work for Latin-American music. I want a merengue song. The songs can be labelled anything from "Tropical", "dominican pop", "bachata", "musica hondurena", "latin pop", and so on. Bollocks, all these songs are merengue. Salsa songs can say "salsa", "cumbia", "latin jazz", and so on.

2 years later and your Video is still giving good info. The ctrl-alt-delete hint save me a lot of time thank you
For the second tip it's also possible to use multiple profiles of one browser instead of multiple (different) browsers.

So true! Being my authentic self while remaining positive and being kind has changed those around me in suble yet profound ways. Stay shining!

Love That, Trancey mate!
Auto import feature is a banger. Thank you guys!
it's saddening that people feel like they have to use these appalling thumbnails. makes me not wanna click on the video.
But you did
What if all your music is on an external hard drive can you still send your music from your record pool to that hard drive automatically?
This is helpful. When i open my music in Windows Media Player all the music is in alphabetical order, But when I open up my controller software (Virtual DJ) it's all in a bunch of subfolders, which makes tracks difficult to find.
Thanks for the DJ info
You bet

Great video! What is the model of the controller used in the video?
did you guys mention tagging? tagging is a much better way to organize tracks than folders
Thank you very much for this info. The auto import has really helped me organise my music files .
Thank you Crossfader for making great content fill with tips to help us improve our dj skills
Our pleasure dude!

So glad you found it valuable! Which tip did you find most useful to you? 😄
Is _Serato_ is one of your Smart Folder?

I was wondering the same as well. I use MIK and then put the tracks into my library.
Nothings showing up in My sub crates when I’m doing it it worked before but I deleted it to try a new one
What was the other place he mentioned to get music besides soundcloud?
Great spark to kick me in gear to get my tunes organized...Thanks Crossfader!
Any time!
do you have to move the auto import files back to the main music folder once they are imported into serato?
Thanks
Unfortunately, this latest imports crate does not appear on my Serato, much less the Auto Import folder.
What about Traktor? :)
How can I get the "Latest import" ? How Can I automalically import to the crate???????? :( I need Help...

Missing the Vinyl DJ ;)
This doesn't apply for rekordbox DJs, bummer, seato is great for non-industry DJs. Can you do a VIDEO for rekordbox users?
I have a ddj 400 and Rekordbox 5 if I upgrade to the latest version of Rekordbox will It continue to be free?
Yes it will
Los Ángeles azules para bailar
Do you think it's bad to use YTMP3 for downloading songs? If so how come?
The quality is very low, will sound terrible on a loud system
If you get mp3 get at least in 320kbps
@@oleksandrmusic you cant get 320 from RUclips

Lexicon DJ is way too overpriced imo
So aren’t iPhones but until they get a competitor they will have a high price
You get a 30 day free trial to sort out all the really worst habits.
The instant export to DJ software is incredible though.
@@djLovelyTime yup
More ads than real content - sorry. And sorting by genre when you have a meta data is really not a problem. The problem is how to assign a genere.
Thank you guys for great work
