Blatty was given much more creative control over the film than most writers had at the time - he hand picked his director Friedkin - based on the gritty, realistic way he had directed "The French Connection" - but it was very telling that theater marquees had Blatty's name on top - above the film title "The Exorcist" - with Friedkin's name below the film title ..
