    I once took a KLM 747-400M from ORD to AMS in the 1990s. I questioned my flight attendant regarding why the “back wall” was seemingly so far forward on the plane. He invited me and my traveling companion to have a look at the cargo section beyond the back wall’s door. Very cool! One of the two best experiences I’ve had on an aircraft! (The other was a flight deck visit in-flight [pre-11Sep2001] enroute from LGW to FUN and sighting Madeira as it popped up on the horizon.) I presume both of those experiences are out of the question today.

    The main reason for the drop in combi aircraft was the newer and a lot more stringent fire regulations. This meant that the aircraft had to have newer and a lot more expensive fire suppression systems fitted. Also regulation over exactly what you are allowed to carry on a mixed passenger and freight aircraft restricts what can be carried.

    • @AviationCommercials
      @AviationCommercials 3 года назад +8

      Exactly. They left out the safety issues that make the market for these aircraft difficult in todays regulations. There is also the part about fixed bulkheads that is part of these regulations that can make these aircraft not as attractive or flexible.

    • @solandri69
      @solandri69 3 года назад +5

      Yup. I got to ride on Northwest Airlines' last 747 combi flight before they got rid of their combi aircraft. The rear "wall" wasn't a bulkhead. It was just a partition, and you could peek around the edges near the windows to see the cargo in back. Probably so each airline could adjust its position to tweak the ratio of passengers to cargo to best met their needs. That must've been a nightmare from a fire safety regulation standpoint.

    • @AviationCommercials
      @AviationCommercials 3 года назад +2

    I flew on a 747 to Barcelona. I hung out at the rear of the plane and saw a guy going in and out of a door. I asked him what was back there and he said they were transporting some horses. I don't know if he was joking but I always wondered how/why there would be a door going further back into the plane. I guess it was a combi.

    Having worked on the 747 line when the 747-400M aircraft produced is also the issue of range. The Combi aircraft are heavy which has impact on range and fuel burn. Since they are not optimized for either passenger or cargo they do impacts on the range. Along with the issues of loading and unloading both the passenger and cargo they tend to do both rather poorly

    Not sure you'd call it a Combi, but I once flew as passenger in a cargo loaded C-141 Starlifter from Diego Garcia to Oman. 18 passenger seats, facing backwards towards a 10 foot wall of about a zillion pounds of military gear held down by trucker straps and positive thoughts. And yes, the cargo master gave us the same FAA regulated safety brief. The high angle take-off and landing were...excessive.

    • @Gameflyer001
      @Gameflyer001 3 года назад

      Part of the reason has to do with the flight path taking off from SXM, due to the immediate turn just after wheels up in order to avoid the tall mountains rising a short distance from the runway. The maneuver at that point of the flight requires more fuel to be expended, and thus it needed a refueling stop in Curacao before continuing the journey back to AMS.
      The 744 was replaced on this route with the A330 because it was capable of departing earlier along the shorter runway and thus not need as much of a maneuver to avoid those mountains. It then also makes the nonstop return flight much more possible to achieve.

    There's a Canadian North 747-400 combi that comes into my local airport quite regularly all the way up from Iqaluit. It's a perfect fit for them as the best way to transport any cargo from way up there is by air, and Iqaluit is small enough that they don't need to move that many people out of there and all the way down to southern Canada, so the combi's reduced passenger capacity is still plenty.

    I think the reason why they don't happen anymore is that the patterns of passenger service and freight service are so different from each other that it's hard to coordinate them together on the same vehicle. Just look at the railroads, they're much more flexible in terms of configuration than an airline given that they can swap out cars in the consist really easily but they still almost never put freight and passengers on the same train simply because serving both service patterns at the same time with the same vehicle doesn't make any sense except in very niche applications.

      FYI a passengers B748 for example mostly is carrying cargo in its cargo compartiment.
      The main issue behind combi, besides of complicated management which means more costs, according to "Michael Porter" for new business models mixing strategies means being stuck between them , for example an airline has split the cabin into half pax, half cargo for outbound leg, let's imagine for the inbound trip they have pax demand higher than cargo, here to modify the cabin will consume time and mostly not practical due to some specific equipements

The 747 PH-BFB was 29 years old when it was taken out of service and was parked before the Corendon hotel in a new Corendon Livery. Sadly all the 747's have gone. The oldest KLM 737-800 currently in service, the PH-BXA is already nearing its 23'rd birthday in the upcoming year.

The 747 was designed to carry tons upon tons of freight along with close to 400 passengers. Win-win is I see it

      The problem with rear loaded freight is the cargo can be much more dense than passengers, but the laws of physics favor a center of gravity forward of the main gear and wing box. This means there's a weight limit which defeats the usefulness of all that space.
