This year on Good Friday was held a true summit of jazz music. Six of the internationally renowned musicians in the scene came together to form a supergroup, preserving and honoring the legacy of jazz giants from Duke Ellington to Miles Davis and John Coltrane. The exquisite brass section featuring Hardbop virtuosos Tony Lakatos, Alex Sipiagin, and Perico Sambeat joined forces with a swinging rhythm section comprised of Yasha Okun, Paul Kleber and Tobias Backhaus. Experience groovy modern jazz in the finest American jazz tradition!
Tony Lakatos is probably a household name to anyone involved in European jazz. Born into a family of musicians, Tony started playing the saxophone at the age of 15, which he learned to play at a world-class level in just a few years. Shortly after graduating from the Bela Bartók Conservatory in Budapest, he migrated to Germany where he has since lived and worked as one of the most sought-after tenor players. Between 1993 and 2021 he was the solo tenor of the H.R. - Bigband, with which he won the German Record Critics Award. He has been involved in over 350 recordings and his work includes collaborations with Randy Brecker, Al Foster, George Mraz, Art Farmer, Jasper van't Hof, Kenny Wheeler, Adam Nussbaum and Terri Lyne Carrington.
Alex Sipiagin is no stranger to jazz fans. Since the age of 24, the native Russian has lived in New York, where he is one of the absolute top players in his field. He won the renowned Louis Armstrong Competition of the Th. Monk Institute, released numerous albums on the infamous Criss Cross label and worked in formations with Michael Brecker, Eric Clapton, Donny McCaslin, Seamus Blake, Dave Holland or the Mingus Big Band.
Paul Kleber was born in Berlin and started playing cello and drums at a young age, before he chose his main instrument, the double bass. He studied classical bass at the Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ Berlin and later jazz bass at the Universität der Künste Berlin. He played and recorded with Jazzanova, Sebastian Studnitzky, British band Fink, Micatone, Nylon, JazzIndeed and Lisa Bassenge.
Tobias Backhaus is without doubt one of the most in-demand German jazz drummers. He studied under the guidance of master drummers John Riley, Joey Baron, Keith Copeland and John Hollenbeck and holds a Bachelor’s degree in jazz performance from the University of the Arts in Berlin. In the German capital, he quickly made a name for himself as a versatile and exciting musical accompanist and has been a vital part of the contemporary European jazz scene for well over the past decade. Tobias regularly works with internationally renowned jazz artists such as Till Brönner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Tony Lakatos, Torsten de Winkel, Carlos Bica, Gwilym Simcock, Jiggs Whigham, Rick Margitza, Peter Weniger, Frank Chastenier and Ack van Rooyen as well as large ensembles such as the Dresden Symphonic Orchestra, NDR Big Band, Berlin Jazz Orchestra, European Movement Jazz Orchestra and many others.
