- Mercedes-Benz R230 convertible top / vario roof common issues.
I have been working on Mercedes-Benz vehicles since 1997.
Often times the hydraulic top stops functioning due to the items listed in the video.
There are other instances of failure, if you have issues with your top and need diagnostic assistance please contact me at www.cartechconnect.com .
99% of the time the car can be diagnosed without a scan tool, if you do a lot of your own repairs I suggest purchasing your own scanner from ebay or amazon called iCarsoft Mercedes II
that scanner although an offbrand has done very well with accessing all of the control modules and reading the live data. I suggest that scanner to anyone I try helping with their Mercedes-Benz.
I have been a Master Mercedes-Benz technician for a very long time. I can diagnose almost any issues over the internet or phone. All I need is some patience and faith and for you to follow my suggestions and I can save you tons of time and money.
Please reach out, like and share and subscribe.
I will always do what I can to help out the next guy, thank you for viewing and I hope to have more videos coming soon.

Sir this is the most in depth description of the droproof
Its ok, its one of my earlier videos. I plan on updating it in the future. Thanks!
I'm in the process of buying an SL, your videos are making me a smarter buyer. Cause I'm being better educated on little quirks, dealerships are going to hate me. I love it! #SAVETHOUSANDS!
Thank you so much, best of luck on your purchase. :)
This video was a huge help. was able to fix my inoperative roof by cleaning the corrosion on the plugs in the bottom of trunk under the pump. Thank you very much!!!!
Glad to help :)
This video is pure gold. Shopping for SL 500's and alot have manual tops. Liked, subbed and saved. Thanks!
Inherited one of these and had no idea that there is a button to raise the roof while it's inside the trunk. Brilliant! Thanks for this video!
Glad to help. Thanks for viewing!
@@MasterTechLou my 2007 SL-550 has the top stuck in the up "easy load" position. The easy load button does not light and does not seem to work. The top went in to this position by itself when I accidentally unlatched the luggage cover while trying to remove a small bag from under the cover without opening it. No the top won't move because the trunk is in the trunk open position and the top is in the easy load position. What should I do. I was thinking of manually unlocking the side trunk latches to push the trunk to the extended top down mode much like the procedure to manually raise the top but I don't want to cause harm. Any ideas????
@@falconerx, release the hydraulic pressure by loosening the 6mm Allen screw just left of the pump reservior. Just crack it loose a little bit and the roof will just about fall down into the trunk. Remember to tighten the allen screw too.
I had an SL550, and after all, these videos highlighted Mercedes roof issues. I sold it and bought an XK convertible. No, thank you. .
It’s amazing this stuff works at all! Problems waiting to happen. Impressive when it does work!
That red on red is gorgeous
Hey Lou, thank you for this great video!! I enjoyed watching it! I'm currently watching random SL R230 related videos in order to learn what to expect from these beasts. I have CLS55 and W140. I wish you could make similar videos related to other SL stuff like ABC, SBC and maybe V12 engines, turbo coolant line leaks.
Open Diff thanks! I will do what I can!
that's a gorgeous R230...thanks for the video
Its coming back to the shop this week, stay tuned for more on this SL, thanks I appreciate you!
Still looking at R230 for sale online. Came to re-watch this video! I already found that at least 2 companies sell rebuilt cylinders and even hydraulic pump for SL R230 which is good. But then I learned I know nothing about regular water leaks in SL's vario roof. I just seen a car which have some "dirty" spots on the carpet around front passenger seat. I suspect it was due to a water leak but who knows. These cars have too many components. There are 11 various roof and trunk locking cylinders. I think this car is more complicated than S-Class or CL-Class of that era and it means more parts to break...
What paint code is that gorgeous red please?
Amazing colour.
Such a breath of fresh air compared to boring old black silver or disappointing greys!!
it is beautiful isnt it? its in the comments somewhere, I know i talked about it before. If I find it I will repost.
thanks, Lou

I have a problem where my father turned the car off when i was putting the convertible back up and it didnt finish the closing process. The roof latched into place but the windows to fully closed and the dashboard says the roof isn't latched. It goes back perfectly fine with no codes. Do you have any advice for me?
Your website doesn't seem to be working, where are you located?
Looking to change my SL 55 Vario-roof oil. Do I just remove the forward plug atop the pump housing and remove oil with a syringe and needle? Must I remove the pump assembly? There is no video on renewing oil. Thanks
how does that water get in by the connectors to cause that corrosion? isnt there seals and gaskets around the trunk lid?
People tend to forget cars arent sealed. The air can flow into a car. Air holds moisture. Moisture collects and condenses near the coldest parts of the car which is usually the metal. So even tho there may not be a water leak, moisture can still make its way into a car.
@@MasterTechLou Thanks, i have an issue that may relate to what your talking about. On my s500 the rear only sags when its cold. It can go from perfectly normal to dropped very low overnight. On a regular warm day it holds perfectly level for weeks if i don't use the car.
Could I have moisture in my lines, pump or reservoir causing this issue?
@@nyacoustics8373 the locking pump and moisture is not the same as the suspension pump and lines. check my air suspension video
Is this an engine out type of vehicle or are you able to service most of the engine components with the engine in? And if you do remove it is as easier to take it out the bottom or out of the top?
I'm interested in getting an SL65.
Master can me help out my trunk is open but rooftop no open
I have a GL 550 my right rear suspension is dropping down. I’m not getting any codes the other day I didn’t know what to do so I just drove it about a half hour after I was driving it it raised up to where it supposed to be and then I parked it and then after it was in the garage, I went back out a couple hours later, and the right side is back down, I start it up and shake the car. See if I can get it to move but it doesn’t move. I think it’s a sensor but I’m not sure I’ve watch some of your videos about the air hoses about the compressor. I don’t think it’s a compressor I don’t think it’s that switch above the compressor. I think it’s gonna be the sensor or a leak it airbag but I wanted to know how I could just test the sensor I watched another video of yours on the sensor and tomorrow will try that.
Yes thank you for this very much!
Film Makers MC Williams hope it helped you out, there are more issues I will make a follow up video regarding them.
@@MasterTechLou That would be great. It seems these models are getting very easy to buy. As you well know, not the easiest to maintain. I just bought a 2003 SL55 that needs work. Low mileage but the top cylinders are shot. I just replaced the main ones in the trunk, The trunk lift and the two lock cylinders. I got the cylinders from top hydraulics. Hard to beat them. As I am replacing cylinders more keep popping. I am waiting for the two lock paw cylinders and the roll bar cylinder. I have seen a couple very poor quality vids but nothing really showing the procedure of taking out the roll bar cylinder. Thank you for taking the time to make the vids. I'm in Puerto Rico. There are great techs here but I'm enjoying playing with it.
How’s the water get in the boot cheers
there is an issue where the rear window seal to the trunk is bad and water seeps through. but in all reality, water can enter a number of ways so I cannot say one thing. every car is different and failures happen in different places, so I guess to answer your question, it gets in every which way it can.
@@MasterTechLou yeh your right there just seen a blocked water outlet that may be the cause cheers
Wow, thanks for this!
Awesome video.
You should have covered checking the fluid level. If the fluid is low it will have a leaking cylinder! I’ve replaced nearly 100 of the individual cylinders in the 230 chassis. Most of the cylinders are too difficult for a customer to replace and all the cylinders come with the two lines attached to their cylinders. Routing the lines to the pump is more time consuming than mounting the cylinders. The other problem it the weakest cylinder will leak first followed by the next weakest. I have occasionally replaced 5 cylinders on a car before the top can properly function. Again I do not recommend any customer replace cylinders themselves. Partly due to safety.
Mine has started to stop halfway when closing. I have to let go of the button then push again to finish closing. There is a loud noise when closing like its getting stuck but when I press the second time it seems to free itself and closes.
Great video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hey !! My top yesterday won’t go back down :( is there a manual mode to put top down until I can get it in shop ?
yes in fact there is a youtube video that shows the process however the issue is getting the flaps to move,. what position is the top stuck in?
Hi thanks for the video, very informative. I have a problem with the small section of the tonneau not folding out when the roof opens. Any ideas why would be greatly appreciated.
I am not sure what section you are talking about? thanks for the nice comments.
@@MasterTechLou it’s the approx 2ft wide by 2in deep section that touches and seals against the trunk lid when the roof is down. It should fold out @1:15 in you vid but mine doesn’t. Looks like it’s hydraulically actuated with a small gas strut to hold firmly into position when opened.
@@scottjackson9093 Need to replace the gas strut. Part # 230-790-00-79. It's an easy replacement by removing 2 small clips.
Hey, I’m in a bit of a conundrum right now. I’m looking to trade in my car and get a new vehicle, but my father wants to keep my car and trade his in instead if we can get the top working again. The issue with my top is it saying that the trunk is open. I checked the wire connector like you said and it is corroded significantly worse than yours. I wasn’t able to figure out where to get that connector online though. Would you happen to know what I should search to find it? Also, I’m going to try to clean it and see if that will make the top work just to see if that really is my problem.
Update: Cleaning the corrosion from the connector has cleared the error and the top is working, although, it still may be a decent idea to get a replacement if they aren’t too expensive. Thank you very very much for your video. I haven’t put the top down in over a year and within 30 minutes of watching your video I fixed my car.
Update 2: I wanted to test out the top with a late night drive to McDonald’s. It is back to saying close trunk lid. I’m guessing it has to do with lack of connection in the connector. I cleaned the connector using Brasso, but nothing else.
Two things are common with the trunk
The corrosion and also check the wiring on the trunk hinge it breaks.
QD electric cleaner is the spray I seen work pretty good. As for the connector only benz or junkyards.
Thank you for very informative video.

The flaps that are supposed to go towards the inside of the bootlid are not moving.how do I fix that?
@@GarrethBoyce-u8b by diagnosing why they arent moving. Most likely a switch is not operating properly so the flaps are not being activated until the module knows the trunk is open.
That paint color is phenomenal!! What's it called?
Thanks
I mentioned it before somewhere in the comments, I forget offhand 🤔
Hi, i have a SL350, I pressed the red button to raise the hood in the trunk, it rose perfectly a few cm, allowing me to take objects from the trunk, pressing the red button again, the hood does not come down, preventing me from closing the trunk. in your opinion what can it be?
I show in the video that exact issue.
If the light is not flashing then you may have a bad relay on the pump
Why does my driver's side door switch for the trunk release stay red... acctuator works fine soft trunk closes fine works good switch will open the trunk but light never goes out .. any idea ?
Yep, slam trunk down. If light stays on you have wiring issue or corrosion in pse or connector I show in video
Hello Lou, Hope you can help me and others with this question. On Minute 2:20 you unlock the trunk and put the trunk in the service position shown at 2:31. so far so good. Then I want to reverse these functions and lock the trunk again by swinging the trunk mechanism back the way it came. Problems - my trunk lid gets about 2 inches from "docking" and everything stops. The trunk mechanism does not allow any more motion. I notice there are stops on the mechanism but I have no idea how they should be adjusted. Do you? I notice on the Factory video showing them stowing the roof with no power their trunk mechanism works perfectly!
Hello, you mean once you open to service position you cant close the trunk back down again? While the trunk is open for the roof process?
@@MasterTechLou After I'm done with the trunk in the service position ( in my case changing out the right lid lock cylinder) I want to put the trunk back to the position where you unlocked it in your video 2:23 except I'm going to relock the trunk not unlock it as you are doing. After it's locked the roof retraction program will either open or close the roof depending on what the operator wants to do. What I'm saying is that when I get to close to 2:23 trying to lock the trunk I have resistance when the trunk lock mechanism is about 2" from the body part of the lock mechanism. The resistance is in the linkage somewhere. The linkage looks new as does all the linkage to the lid lock cylinder. I don't want to force it closed but I'm not sure what I should be thinking about adjusting to get the two parts to come together as they need to do in order to relock the trunk.
@@billtimmins1880 ok, I think we are on the same page. The trunk will have resistance, put your hand In the center above the license plate and slam it down. If all you did was stop the roof when the trunk opened backwards, and then unlocked it, then all you need to do is pull it down and once you get close, slam it. The extra resistance is normal. Just dont blame me if we are not on the same page 🫣.
Lou, When I tried to slam the trunk lid as you suggest, I could feel it coming into contact with something on the linkage. It turned out that the trunk lid was running into a threaded screw-like piece with a rubber head that is attached to each of the locking hook assemblies. I'm guessing at the purpose of this adjustable stop but I did not feel comfortable forcing it. I screwed in both sides about 3/8 of an inch and was able to close the trunk. I'm sure this is not the last of this story as I think I will find that the flaps and the front of the trunk lid won't be flush with the body when the trunk lid is properly closed. Am I correct in my assumption about the purpose of this piece?
@@billtimmins1880 couldnt tell ya without seeing it myself
Great video. I have 2007 model and recently my top stopped working. I've checked fuses, added fluid and it worked once but then stopped again. There doesn't appear to be any leaks. Also, the hardtop message on the dashboard stopped appearing a couple of months before the top stopped working. Any idea what's going on? Thanks, Mike
Not enough info to tell you anything. Be sure both batteries are good. Especially the trunk battery. You may have a faulty roof switch.
I've got issues, the car says oil over fill yet the oil level is ok, it says fog light is not working yet is working, fo you think this could be because of the corrosion in the drunk wires? Thanks
hello, no, probably have bad oil level sensor or wiring to it. and depends on what fog light it says is out and codes for it and what bulb is being used.
Hi, I just purchased an SL500 thank you for the very informative video. A lot of expertise there in detail. What kind of topics?
I am open to anything. Provided I have a car here I will do it.
Benz-Tech Lou P. I think anything on a model overview would be popular like this, also you could break down more specifics on certain modules/issues if you had it in for a repair (since you'd be in there anyway). I think there would be an interest on most things, especially common stuff (ABC lines/accum/block, top hydraulics, common m113 things like valve cover gaskets, CPS, etc) honestly if you do a video on anything shared with other platforms (m111/112/113/119 272/272/275, 722.6/9, etc) you can rage other models in your description so more people will view it as it applies to their car as well
@@bmwrepaircrew8848 Thanks I appreciate the input. :)
Excellent 👍
Nice! I"ve been arguing with myself for more than 2 years now on getting an R230. Do you consider them worth the trouble in your opinion? LOVE the car. Hate the thought of endless messing with the hard top 'drive' and ABC issues. I HAVE the money to fix as needed, I just don't want the hassles.
Do you think replacing the major components of each after purchase has a reasonable chance of giving years of trouble free function? Or is the complexity of the entire (20 year old) car always going to require lots of service trips?
Only you know whats worth the hassle.
Only thing that you need to be leery of is just the age of everything. Its not like you’ll be in the shop every time. But all cylinders will most likely need replacement or repaired. There are many on the road with no issues yet. Hard to say which will be ok and which wont. But hydraulic parts only last so long. So be prepared for the cost. If it were me , get a 2011 or next body 231.
By the time to get a cost effective 230
And dump money into it you could have had a 231. But there’s arguments on both sides.
But the cars are not that problematic. Only people
Whining about it are ones that aren’t prepared for the cost and failure of wearing parts. And then half butt repairs which cause more issues. So myself I wouldnt be scared. But is stay away from 06-08 models due to engine and transmission issues. Hope this helps.
@@MasterTechLou Thanks! I assume you are recommending against the early 5.5 and 7 speed tranny? As opposed to problems in the last year(s) of the 5.0 and 5 speed.
What about the SL 400 motor? Intrigued by it's lighter weight and handling, and nice hp output. But only sold for a couple of years apparently.
@@mikeb1039 correct the early M273 and early 722.9 are crap.

Hi Lou I have a 2009 SL550
when I open the trunk with the roof down, the roof automatically lifts ( easy load) which is weird, but worse the trunk lid doesn't open far enough so the flaps hit the panels on the trunk lid. I can push the trunk lid higher but I just get the chime and flashing easy load light so I have to pull thr trunk down to get it to clode . The struts are good, I just need to reset the micro switch to ge the trunk to open further, is there a way to reset the open height ( reindex the micro switch) easily ? or is this a Star diagnostic $5 millrion dollar dealer reset ?

I can send you a video of the issue if you need to see the issue
btw have you tried the icarsoft 3 ?

there is no reset, Ive dealt with this before you may have a broken ground wire in the hinge area on the left side. you dont have to adjust anything. most likely cracked or broken wiring and thats why you have to pull the trunk down, to make good connection again.
@@MasterTechLou Thanks Lou I'll have a look !
Hi Lou if all the lights and soft close work, should I be looking for a bad ground to the microswitch ( trunk height limit) is that switch S124 on the right hand ( passenger side in North America) ? If tat is the correct micro switch for trunk height?
and I'm not sure why the load assist lifts the roof everytime I open the trunk with the trucnk handle I only used the red button to stop the load assist so the flaps dont hit ...

not at all ha, the kits are not available anymore and its not cost effective to do this with this old a car. I can get the instructions for you, but as far as doing the whole process that is a lot . better to get a bluetooth fiber optic add on and stream through there.

Benz-Tech Lou P. Lou have you ever attempted getting an aftermarket/modified rear truck seal (where it meets the glass) that has a higher lip/water channel to it? I've had several r230s (currently have two now) and it seems that seal always fails not just by adhesion but also doesn't seem to work well to combat water ingress that may be rapidly running down the rear window. Also wondered if you considered using vasoline or the MB sunroof lubricant on the seals to make them seal more tightly/reduce ingress
@@bmwrepaircrew8848 I would never put aftermarket stuff on. especially weatherstrip. my personal feelings towards it. to me its a design flaw and replacing it a few times is better than replacing with aftermarket. No I think you're doing the right thing since you are running a shop you can't really experiment on other people's cars plus it covers you for liability costs (i.e. Damage to pumps electronics) you're already going the extra mile sealing/adhering it, I just was more asking because I thought you might have heard of/figured out a method that was better than MB replacement seal just out of curiosity
Great video. Currently considering this as a cheap runabout (!!!) and like to know the likely issues first.
Ben Artee a “cheap” runabout? you may be a billionaire haha.
My 2008 Sl 550 roof won’t go up after roof was down and I did doughnut’s
Reverse the doughnuts and it should work again. 😊
@@MasterTechLou lol. Brother I got caught in the rain 11 hours ago. And still it won’t close. It says the bar needs to be up. But the bar is up. So I’m S O L with ideas.
@@mab4870 water most likely got into electrical connections. Gotta get a scanner hooked up or wait till it dries out it should work again.
But it will need fixed. Hard to say exactly what happened but check trunk floor for water and also under carpet.
