I you are outside or in a bad position you can just unscrew the flaps with a 10mm wrench and put them in the trunk instead. That will get you back on the road.
Not everyone has access to Star diagnostics, so you will have to take is to an agent.., my old SL 500 is so easy, it is a one man operation to manually open / close the soft top. Sometimes the new cars are just too complicated. Good clear video though👍
You only need the Star diagnostics tool to open/close the flaps . . . which can also be done with a simple wire going to the battery. There is an addendum that shows how to do it, I've done it a few times on my SL500 and didn't need Star diagnostics.
I assume there is a way around this for the flaps and its a good thing to as I don't think there is a big future for 6K repair bils on an 03 350 sl that's worth 4K at most This way I will get decade's of fun out of my SL
On mine it takes about 15 minutes. I needed 2 Allen wrenches, and a couple of wires long enough to reach the flap motor (to manually open and close the flaps). I'd say I can open and close the roof with roughly $10 worth of tools.
This video is very informative all it really tells you is take it to the dealership what normal person has the computer the data cord the specialty tools ie the holders all in the vehicle why the top is stuck in a downpour
Don't take it to dealership unless you have warranty with them. The parts are expensive enough without getting charged a stupid amount of labour. Take it to an independent mercedes specialist. No way of getting round mercedes being expensive cars but a dealership is the most expensive way to get anything fixed
This technique is so complicated it's pathetic. Woe to the driver who has to do this at the worst time; the beginning of rain out in the open. Seems Mercedes could've made manual operation SO much easier.
Complicated enough but you need a star diagnostics device to even complete this task to fold the flaps back in or do it another probably more complicated way not even mentioned in this video. Sod that! Bought a waterproof cover for when my roof fails until I can drop it into a garage when not raining. Much simpler solution.
The backup way (which is what I use on mine) is just to run a wire from the battery to the motor that opens them. It actually takes a bit less time than using the Star Diagnostics tool . . . but is a tiny bit more work.
This car is a real pain in the ass. But when everything's working perfectly, it's absolutely amazing to drive. Especially at 140 with the top down and the incredible stereo pumping, at night. But having to manually open and close the top really sucks.
There's nothing wrong with your Internet connections, ladies and gentlemen. You've just watched a textbook example of regressive German imagineering as denoted by the illustrious and innovative masterminds at Mercedes Benz.
Hi i have a 2003 sl500... roof wouldnt work but i then noticed in forums that you need the foot handbrake on and it works fine... dont know how or why the roof should work when driving upto 25mph with no brake on (obviously) but hey i hope thats the answer, if it stops i will post on here
Very easy procedure !! I won't use automatic anymore 😵💫
Enjoyed the background music A LOT

Activate launch control, check GPS,allign lasers, adjust weapons systems, arm missile tubes, check detonator switch, move to a safe distance, finally, run like hell.

What this says is that in reality if it stays down your going to get wet and miserable driving to the main dealer to pay to have this sorted !!
Its easier tó buy á new car ! Thanks !
Although this video is something completely different, it is not a Monty Python skit.
Close the roof manually in the same time a complete SL is built.... oh, and you need $10.000 worth of tools for it...

So what to do when you’re out in the open and your roof wont close? Rediculous...

Is there a specific cover you bought? I have a complete car cover but don’t want to drive around with that all the time.
So, if you've a dead battery you're screwed?
Uggh!!!
How to reverse this process!! Help, need to down manually.

Doses that star tool come with this stupid car when u buy it?
Manually with software..?!
How much does the dealer charge to close the top manually?
Probably 1 or 2 hr labor
0:14 switch OFF the ignition 🤔

No computer = no go.Same as IMAO without the expletive!

If the top breaks, the vehicle is totaled.
