I agree with you guys. Language is a tool for communication. Being afraid of making mistakes will hinder a non-native speaker’s confidence in using it. To help others feel comfortable speaking 2nd language, listeners must show respect and compassion toward them.

Whenever I go back to Taiwan it takes a few days before I can speak proper Taiwanese again (my mandarin is crap, but Taiwanese is ok). I always just throw words (Taiwanese, mandarin, and English!) together at first and people can figure out what I mean. After a few days I finally get back sentences that are mostly in one language. Taiwanese people are very willing to try to understand and it makes it easier.

Agree. My mate in the UK just heard that I am using the word "devastating" for describing something horrible. She said it is too harsh for native speakers.

很神奇的組合！因為外國人重視溝通，語言不通，基本連認識這個人都沒辦法！他們應該還是會基本英文單字或基本中文單字！我不相信是「完全」不懂對方語言還可以在一起。請問一開始要約會，要怎麼開口約對方？同桌吃飯時，要聊什麼？男生you you you？女生what what what？要怎麼聊天？肢體語言，也不能表達內心想法啊！但還是恭喜能在一起❤

學語言真的環境很重要 , 台灣要推雙語國家(中英)必須創造更生活的英語環境 , 在台灣學日語好幾年還不如在日本生活幾個月 , 當不得不用當地語言時進步神速 , 連記憶力跟理解力都變強 , 因為要生存就必須說出口 !
