I have to admit that I totally agree with you on Other M. I ACTUALLY PLAYED this game and it 100% doesn't deserve the reputation it has. It's a real crime. This game is genuenly enjoyable and yes, I liked it. It just became a commun trend to hate this game and that's very sad. The only advice I could give to people is to play it by themselves instead of following the general opinion as I did before for this game, cause it deserves it. And yes, it counts, it features Adam which is a very important part of Samus' lore.
Glad to see someone else who is enlightened in the echoes quality, I myself prefer to every other prime but im glad to you dont just say ‘ammo bad’ ‘light world dark world smelly’
I agree to a point. I think that the game itself was very well constructed and it was fun, and engaging, etc etc… however once it opened up into the light world/dark world mechanic I did find myself getting pulled out of the immersion of the game simply because Nintendo relies on that trope to save memory space so often that it’s almost in every game they have. It was just a tired story mechanic. Is it viable and useful in the right story? Sure, but when MP2 was released it felt very overused. Still one of my favorite games of all time, on the heels of MP1.
As far as the Metroid Prime series is concerned: Prime 1, Prime 2, Prime 3. . . In that order. Prime 2 is continually underrated by the masses in my opinion, and I like it way more than Prime 3.

Other M is my favorite metroid game, it was the first metroid game I played so maybe that's why but I've played almost every other game on the series since then and I like almost all of them but I keep coming back to Other M and enjoying it more than any other metroid game.
I love Other M, not the best Metroid game in all of the franchise but it's good. I've been playing 2D Metroid since 1988 and loved playing every other game since. Metroid Prime 2 Echoes is my favorite and Super Metroid and Fusion I ABSOLUTELY love!!! I love what they've so far and I with my son and daughter do agree that they need to keep it right with these titles 'cause while every other game like pinball, Federation Force and whatnot have been okay Other M was to me a good canon game within the Metroid series. I'm so glad to be alive and kicking at 48 years old and Metroid Dread is a great addition. Very happy indeed they finally got another original Metroid game going AND for the 2021 year! LET'S GO!!! ✊
12:55 I appreciate that it added things like the finisher/overblast sequences and items like the Diffusion Beam and Energy Parts, and that it at least _tried_ to bridge the gap between Super Metroid and Fusion and tell a deeper story. Unfortunately, not only was it answering questions that _nobody asked,_ it basically just rehashed Fusion's plot but kind of worse. Also, its localization/translation was utterly _murdered,_ to the point that a lot of the stuff we in the west hate about it was either less present in the original version or possibly even nonexistent (like Samus's weird crush on Adam). I'd recommend watching The Other M That Never Was for more on that. Honestly, if I were to rework it, I'd put it earlier in the timeline (since certain parts _clearly_ were trying to replicate the Metroid manga), basically remove all of the story beats that were taken from Fusion (like Nightmare and the Metroid cloning program), give it better controls (limiting it to 1 Wiimote was not a good idea), and (admittedly a given) not mess up the translation so hard that it destroys the entire plot, like what we actually got. So essentially, I'd be making a new game (let's call it Metroid Another M). 14:06 Federation Force suffered from being a spinoff released when everyone wanted a mainline game 9especially after Other M). I can practically _guarantee_ that if we got a mainline or Prime-like game before or at the same time as Federation Force, it wouldn't be nearly as hated.
I agree with all your scores. I am very vocal about the elements I don’t like about Metroid: Other M, but still give it the exact score you give it. It just had the potential to be a 9.5 and that’s what bums me out with the execution.
@@drakemerner4368 except for the fact that there's no exploration, all you do in combat is tip toe until sensemove activates, the game inexplicably forces you forward by locking doors, the wiimote only control scheme is garbage with a nunchuck being far more preferable, and you have to switch to 1st person to use missiles or look at things most ppl wouldn't bother looking at to trigger a cutscene, topped with generic environments and unassesable amounts of fan service? Sure, guess it's not terrible of you ignore everything that makes a good game.
Ok, here goes: I think that the pinkish glow we see in the trailers is Samus' Chozo DNA reacting to other Chozo. The Dread team has talked about Samus' origins and her Chozo DNA multiple times since the games reveal trailer. We haven't seen a living Chozo yet, so that's why we haven't see this happen yet either. The Chozo are known to have great physic manipulation abilities, so the Chozo could be messing with her DNA in that sense. How its implemented, I'm not sure. Perhaps the armored Chozo messed with her DNA sometime around the fight? And I'm not exactly sure how it would be used in gameplay either. Perhaps certain abilities will stop working or cant be used because of it. So yeah, I think that the strange pinkish glows we see in the trailers are a result of Samus' Chozo DNA acting up, due to the living Chozo
Metroid Prime 2 is my favorite Metroid and favorite game of all time. The game inspired me and is the reason I went into a career in art. The game was beautiful, inspired, and atmospheric. I know a lot of people didn’t like it but to me this game took everything prime 1 got right and just improved and expanded on it.
Knowing that the localisation of Other M made such subtle changes to the script that hugely change your perception of Samus and her relationship with Adam make me like the game a bit more. The translation simplified a lot of things and used more flowery language, making Samus look very submissive to Adam. Meanwhile in the original Japanese version she is being stubborn and not using her abilities until Adam orders her to because he told her to "limit herself". Point in case; the Varia Suit. In the English version Adam looks like a dick for waiting so long to authorize the suit, while in the Japanese version Adam yells at her to activate it, "NOW". More of a "what the hell are you doing?" kind of vibe. I replayed the game with the original Japanese script in mind and boy does that make a difference. Gameplay wise it's still eh, but I'm a lot more forgiving by willing to overlook the terrible English writing.
Appreciated your nuanced take on Fusion. It’s my favorite Metroid game (and favorite game of all time,) but I can appreciate that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But it always boggles my mind when people completely write it off just because it’s more straightforward. They just say, “linear=bad,” and don’t even talk about the actually gameplay, which is masterful, in my opinion. So, anyway… yeah, good video 👍
Oh make no mistake, Fusion is absolutely my cup of tea! I just happen to think Super and Zero Mission are slightly better as far as 2D games go. But I love it to pieces.
My top would be (from the games i've played) : 1 - MP2 Echoes with 10/10 2 - Samus Returns with 9.5/10 2 - Metroid Prime with 9.5/10 4 - Super Metroid with 9.25/10 5 - Zero Mission with 9/10 6 - MP3 Corruption with 8/10 7 - Fusion with 7/10 I got bored after playing the first few hours of Other M so i don't really count it as played. Maybe i'll give it another shot one day.
Hurray for 8.5! When I was a kid playing Zero Mission and Meele, I longed to learn more about who Samus was as a character and although the execution wasn't perfect, Metroid Other M turns out to be in my top 10 fave games of all time, so y'all can sleep if u want. Every year I rewatch the full movie along with Alien 1 + 2. True fans will always love Metroid and Samus even at the series' darkest, it makes the dawns ever more beautiful. 1 MORE DAY! 🤯
Dude?! Excellent quick fire review! Really like your take on most of the games. The only one I would change is MP3. Ive put over 135 hours into it. I was a huge fan of fps on the wii but they all had their issues in the pre Red Steel 2 days but Prime 3 came out and blew my mind. The Graphics were so amazing! I found the story and plot to be awesome. Loved the planetary travel as i felt it gave a more organic variety like the original game maxed out. The music was fantastic but the only thing that holds it back a bit was the voice acting. It wasnt the worst but im not writing home about it lol i forgive any issue I have bc that was the early days of true voice acting for Nintendo. Infact I think that might have been the first instance for them. Also really loved the in game achievement system. They hid some really interesting ones in there. Great video man!

Ive dabbled in Metroid when I was younger before but now I am seriously playing through the series, so far almost done Metroid 2 on the Game Boy and I am loving them so far, really excited for the future games too! Im the kind of person who enjoys the positive aspects of things, so Im sure I will enjoy even the controversial games in the series
As an old guy myself and having played all the Metroid games too, I feel that you are more precise in all the Metroid game reviews, you clearly understand the difference of each game and it's value. Can't wait to check your Metroid Dread review.
It’s funny I grew up in the 80s too but, I played the first Metroid on NES over my friend’s house, to this day I’ve never beat it (eventually ended up with my friend’s cartridge). Metroid 2 was the first Metroid game I owned and I played it religiously, beat the game on the original GameBoy!
I've never played other M but all the footage I see looks really dope, can someone explain what I'm missing? The idea of blending 2D with 3D like that seems awesome and it LOOKS really fluid with the combat. What are it's shortcomings?
Really cool video and a good one to set the mood for Friday! I'll say Other M is an 8.75 :D My favourite has to be Samus Returns because I fell in love with AM2R and Samus Returns therefor is just another great game based on the original. In general I like the 2D games more, but something about this "hunt" makes these games based on Metroid II special. In terms of 3D games I like Prime 2 the most. It is hard, but also the most refined imo.
I agree with most of your scores, except the original Metroid (but hadn't played it as a child and Fusion was my first 2D one) ... And I like Metroid Prime 3 more than 2 😅 Good video, like always 👍
Wow. Federation Force gets that high of a score? Respect. I genuinely mean that. Kudos for being able to look past Samus not being the protagonist, as well as the chibi-like artstyle, both of which definitely aren't exactly synonymous with Metroid (and though Pinball might not be either, at least the red thread is still intact ... because morph ball). I haven't played it, nor do I plan to, it doesn't look like it's something i'd enjoy, but the critique it got back then - although somewhat justified - just didn't seem fair on the gameplay itself, since it was mostly targetted at the lack of Samus and the choice of artstyle.
Finally someone who doesn't bash on Echoes' ammo system. That's right, Metroid Prime 2 is my favorite game of all time, and imo it takes Prime 1 and just improves a whole lot upon it, ESPECIALLY the backtracking. If I started ranting about how bad and excessive the backtracking in Prime is, I'd be here for a long time - Echoes also has better combat and bosses (arguably some of the best bosses in the series) and by far the best atmosphere in a Metroid game only rivaled by Fusion imo. I don't hate Prime by any means, it's one of my most beloved games, but I just vastly prefer Echoes for trying to do something new with Metroid. Also Sanctuary Fortress is one of the best areas in a video game.

So I'm 3 days into my first Metroid game. Where the hell is Rob? I know you said you were going to take time off for this game. I'm imaging some kind of "Lawnmower Man" scenario. Take a break, man. Get back to us about it for a moment & then you can finish the game. As for me, I'm loving it. I was off to a rough start but I'm getting used to the controls & can't wait for a 2nd playthrough so I can do a better job. The moment I fell in love was when I defeated the first big boss. The one heavily featured in the trailers. But when I saw the huge chained up monster with the infected bellybutton, I was definitely all in. He barfs on you & throws his fingernail clippings at you. It's great. I hope to see even more disgusting abominations tonight when I get home from work. Get well soon, Rob.
Interesting ranking, unfortunately not having a GameCube as a kid I don’t have much appreciation for the Prime Trilogy and have always felt it was responsible for the lack of “true” Metroid games. Trying to play Prime with a GameCube now has been very difficult, the controls are super clunky, the graphics are painful on a modern display without those soft CRT scan lines, and for those reasons I’ve been hoping for a Prime Trilogy port since I got a switch a few years ago, an HD port would go a long way since the models themselves were solid. Super Metroid> Fusion> Zero Mission> AM2R> Prime Hunters> Metroid II> Metroid> Other M> Metroid Prime I would agree on Other M, not really my taste in gameplay, but by no means a bad game and still worth the experience if for no other reason than the story

Also adds to the lore storywise and connects Super Metroid with Fusion in a very interesting way. Echoes also is a such a psychedelic and trippy experience! One of my favourites. Oh my God another human that loves a Metroid as much as I do I thought I'd never see it. Man other end is the only game I haven't played and I've been dying to play it even though all the hate it gets gives it a bad name. I was just about to buy a 3DS again just for same as returns when dread was anouced LOL! SUB!
Rob do you have the NES and SNES controllers for the Switch? I finally was able to get them and love them. They feel legit. I will be getting the N64 and Genesis pads as soon as I am able.
As a huge Metroid fan It may be shocking but I have never played any of the prime series. The Gamecube came out during a time that I had a girlfriend and was in college which meant zero gaming time. To this day I still regret not playing them in their prime... pun intended :) I feel if I play them now it just won't be the same as they are very old and show their age. I am hoping Nintendo does a trilogy remaster, if not I will at least play prime 4 and finally experience what all the hype was about with the 3d Metroid series.
@@Nintendos either or is great, but the trilogy is definitely more convenient to get if you dont have the games at this point, as it's on the Wii and Wii U.
I've played a bit of them but I've never beaten any of them. I got stuck in the original Prime and eventually sold my Gamecube. I've played very, very little of Prime 2 or 3. I want to beat them and get into them because I've loved Metroid from the moment I played the original when I was 5 years old, but for some reason I just haven't been able to get deep into the Prime series the way I have the 2d games, all of which I've beaten with the exception of Samus Returns which I'm getting close to beating.
Glad to see Other M finally getting some recognition. The dialog in hindsight is cringey but I loved it, was the first Metroid game I owned and I'll admit that after playing some of the others it sits at the bottom of my list, but it still holds a special place in my heart
Other M suffered from nationalization failure, i think the gameplay was intended to be cinematic like a movie but we all know how the original super mario bros movie came out, and sadist part is that the Japanese release is simply better than the internationalized releases
8.5/10 for Metroid Other M. Awesome! Love it when someone gives this game some love. Like you, yes, I don't think it's a great game, but it was a good game nonetheless and I enjoyed playing it. Metroid Prime 2 Echoes is actually my favorite of the Prime games. Love the light and dark theme of it. There's still so many Metroid games I haven't played and unless Nintendo ports them over to the Switch, I guess I'll never get a chance. Awesome review. Can't wait for Metroid Dread.

Posting this comment in this video because there is not yet a new one post dread launch. The intro to dread telling is the meaning on Metroid in the chozo language to me pretty clearly defines what Metroid will be referring to in future games.
I actually agree with you on Other M. It was an ambitious project, it tried to do a lot of really interesting things. The execution was flawed in some of it, but the idea of where the game was trying to go isn't hard to see and there so many good things intact in the game despite it's flaws. For me nothing beats Prime, but I can't say that I've ever played a Metroid game that I didn't like. To me Other M is a double edged sword, there are still tons of positives.
Great video! Fun to see some quick thoughts and rating for each game. I specially agree about Samus Returns being a much greater game that some people give it credit for. My main disagree is about Fusion tho, that game is the 2nd best in the series for me, and it surprises me that you don't like the boss fights. I think it has the best boss fights out of the 2D series, in competition with SR on that department. Though the Prime games are overall much more solid on the approach to boss fights that the 2D games.
I’m 41 and while we couldn’t afford the 8bit NES (Genesis was my first) I did play the first and was incredibly intrigued by it. The Justin Bailey code alongside Konami’s were just legendary mythical schoolyard talk ;) …It wasn’t until MK came along I think that we had such an overflow in gaming culture: Toasty!!! ‘Look to La Luna’ alright that’s it :)
Personally I'd raise fusion to a 10 (my favorite 2d game) and would drop other m down a full point. Other M was definitely better than people give it credit for but the authorization system for your gear and the way they handled hard mode really dragged down the experience for me.
Haven't replayed the original in years. Just gave it a go and had to relearn where stuff was. Got to Mother Brain's lair and died. I'll give it another go tonight. My younger self would be ashamed.
Woo! I have faint memories of playin' Prime Hunters back in my day and watching tons of coverage of Metroid Prime 3 for some reason. Super duper excited to hop into my first official Metroid game with Dread. The rumors were true and I couldn't be more excited!! ^ ^

You are SO damn lucky! I'm stuck w/the standard physical version of Dread. Don't even have the amiibo. Then again, I live in the US and since I'm essentially stuck on house arrest due to medical reasons (unrelated to COVID-19) and the scarcity of the stuff I doubt I'll ever get my hands on it.

Metroid NES - 2 (You can't force me to play this game even if you threatened to chop an arm off - okay maybe idk) Metroid 2: Return of Samus - 3 (I'm Gen Z i need colours okay?) Super Metroid - 8.5 (The physics drive me mad and the difficulty/confusion gets to me but need I go further?) Metroid Prime - 9 (Just make the graphics better and boom AMAZING) Metroid Fusion - 7.5 (I loved it but I hate Adam and its too hard for me :p) Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - 7.5 (Its also too hard and uses a cliché trope but outside of that the puzzles seem really chill) Metroid Zero Mission - 10 (Honestly I should have started with this one, its quick fun and takes supers best ideas) Metroid Prime pinball - 5 (I suck at pinball so its defo a me problem) Metroid Prime Hunters - 4 (I didn't witness the online era and the main campaign felt dry and repetitive Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - 8 (I'm biased it was my first Metroid game plus the story is probs the best in the whole series) Metroid other M - 6 (I respect the attempt too and for SOME story elements I defend it too!) Idk I only bought Other M recently and thus am very far removed from the controversy when it released. I played it on original hardware and man.. to me this game just is not fun at all. Not only is it not fun but the story is so hilariously bad that I could stand watching the cutscenes. Granted the combat is fun (when you don't have to use missiles that is) and the visuals are impressive. But most importantly the Wii Remote is this games downfall. The other criticism I have pale in comparison. There is no reason that it couldn't have been played with a Nunchuck
Dread, in my opinion, outclasses Super Metroid. Controls aren't as clunky, the fact that you don't have to cycle through missile types and Power Bomb, (he X-ray scope was replaced with a radar pulse of what blocks are breakable) make it much less of a hassle, the creativity of the Speed Booster and Shinespark puzzles and even the enhanced use, Kraid's secret 1-shot kill animation when you Sequence Break and get the Grapple Beam and Morph Ball Bombs, and every other Boss' finishing animations, the unique design of Samus' Power Suits, hell the new upgrades to Samus' arsenal like the Storm Missile and Cross Bomb and her dash melee counter that deals damage and stuns the enemy make it so much more satisfying when you're clearing out a room.
Unpopular opinion: Super Metroid has really aged but die-hard fans will never admit it because nostalgia. The gameplay feels clunky and unpolished compared to modern metroidvanias in general and while i agree games shouldnt be holding your hand all the time (Fusion's biggest mistake) Super Metroid is unfairly cryptic.
I don't really understand that take tbh I'm not an enjoyer of retro games, often feeling uncomfortable with the controls and clunky mechanics. Yet Super felt to fresh and easy to play for me when i discovered it a few years ago. On the other hand for instance, while i'm more of a Zelda fan than a Metroid one, i just can't stand how dated A Link to the Past feels when i play it.
What about AM2R> I think it deserves a review. Being a fanmade project it is incredible as it still holds the Nintendo pedigree. If you played it what are your thoughts? Can you give a review score for it?

First hunt was a launch title for the DS it was a demo for metroid prime hunters but everything about it was completely different from the actual hunters game. There were 3 different modes and it even included some trailers for hunters if you tapped the title screen on the right place
The story is one of the worst ever made in a game! The gameplay was barren, bland, and controlled poorly! The graphics were... ok, I'll give a point for that. But nah, Other M is garbage

Most of the problems with other m would’ve been fixed if the game was just set in the past and was the first in the timeline however with that being said it’s still the worst Metroid game and the only bad one in my opinion 3.5/10

I haven't played federation force, prime pinball, or the original Metroid 2, and I've never beaten the original nes Metroid, but I've played and beaten the rest and here's my ranking: 9: Prime Hunters 8: Zero Mission 7: Other M 6: Samus Returns 5: Metroid Fusion 4: Metroid Prime 3 3: Metroid Prime 2: Metroid Prime 2 1: Super Metroid The only reason that Samus Returns is number 6 is because I hate the map layout of that game with a passion. If the map layout was less clustered and more spread out the game would be boosted to spot 4. Other than that everything else is pretty straight forward. Edit: forgot Zero mission, is fixed now.

As far as the Metroid Prime series is concerned: Prime 1, Prime 2, Prime 3. . . In that order.
Prime 2 is continually underrated by the masses in my opinion, and I like it way more than Prime 3.

Other M is my favorite metroid game, it was the first metroid game I played so maybe that's why but I've played almost every other game on the series since then and I like almost all of them but I keep coming back to Other M and enjoying it more than any other metroid game.

I love Other M, not the best Metroid game in all of the franchise but it's good. I've been playing 2D Metroid since 1988 and loved playing every other game since. Metroid Prime 2 Echoes is my favorite and Super Metroid and Fusion I ABSOLUTELY love!!! I love what they've so far and I with my son and daughter do agree that they need to keep it right with these titles 'cause while every other game like pinball, Federation Force and whatnot have been okay Other M was to me a good canon game within the Metroid series. I'm so glad to be alive and kicking at 48 years old and Metroid Dread is a great addition. Very happy indeed they finally got another original Metroid game going AND for the 2021 year! LET'S GO!!! ✊

12:55 I appreciate that it added things like the finisher/overblast sequences and items like the Diffusion Beam and Energy Parts, and that it at least _tried_ to bridge the gap between Super Metroid and Fusion and tell a deeper story. Unfortunately, not only was it answering questions that _nobody asked,_ it basically just rehashed Fusion's plot but kind of worse. Also, its localization/translation was utterly _murdered,_ to the point that a lot of the stuff we in the west hate about it was either less present in the original version or possibly even nonexistent (like Samus's weird crush on Adam). I'd recommend watching The Other M That Never Was for more on that.
Honestly, if I were to rework it, I'd put it earlier in the timeline (since certain parts _clearly_ were trying to replicate the Metroid manga), basically remove all of the story beats that were taken from Fusion (like Nightmare and the Metroid cloning program), give it better controls (limiting it to 1 Wiimote was not a good idea), and (admittedly a given) not mess up the translation so hard that it destroys the entire plot, like what we actually got. So essentially, I'd be making a new game (let's call it Metroid Another M).
14:06 Federation Force suffered from being a spinoff released when everyone wanted a mainline game 9especially after Other M). I can practically _guarantee_ that if we got a mainline or Prime-like game before or at the same time as Federation Force, it wouldn't be nearly as hated.
I agree with all your scores. I am very vocal about the elements I don’t like about Metroid: Other M, but still give it the exact score you give it. It just had the potential to be a 9.5 and that’s what bums me out with the execution.
The placement in the timeline alone makes its potential at best 8. Forgetting, of course, it's terrible story and gameplay.

@@drakemerner4368 except for the fact that there's no exploration, all you do in combat is tip toe until sensemove activates, the game inexplicably forces you forward by locking doors, the wiimote only control scheme is garbage with a nunchuck being far more preferable, and you have to switch to 1st person to use missiles or look at things most ppl wouldn't bother looking at to trigger a cutscene, topped with generic environments and unassesable amounts of fan service? Sure, guess it's not terrible of you ignore everything that makes a good game.
Ok, here goes: I think that the pinkish glow we see in the trailers is Samus' Chozo DNA reacting to other Chozo. The Dread team has talked about Samus' origins and her Chozo DNA multiple times since the games reveal trailer. We haven't seen a living Chozo yet, so that's why we haven't see this happen yet either. The Chozo are known to have great physic manipulation abilities, so the Chozo could be messing with her DNA in that sense. How its implemented, I'm not sure. Perhaps the armored Chozo messed with her DNA sometime around the fight? And I'm not exactly sure how it would be used in gameplay either. Perhaps certain abilities will stop working or cant be used because of it. So yeah, I think that the strange pinkish glows we see in the trailers are a result of Samus' Chozo DNA acting up, due to the living Chozo

Metroid Prime 2 is my favorite Metroid and favorite game of all time. The game inspired me and is the reason I went into a career in art. The game was beautiful, inspired, and atmospheric. I know a lot of people didn’t like it but to me this game took everything prime 1 got right and just improved and expanded on it.
Knowing that the localisation of Other M made such subtle changes to the script that hugely change your perception of Samus and her relationship with Adam make me like the game a bit more. The translation simplified a lot of things and used more flowery language, making Samus look very submissive to Adam. Meanwhile in the original Japanese version she is being stubborn and not using her abilities until Adam orders her to because he told her to "limit herself". Point in case; the Varia Suit. In the English version Adam looks like a dick for waiting so long to authorize the suit, while in the Japanese version Adam yells at her to activate it, "NOW". More of a "what the hell are you doing?" kind of vibe.
I replayed the game with the original Japanese script in mind and boy does that make a difference. Gameplay wise it's still eh, but I'm a lot more forgiving by willing to overlook the terrible English writing.
I can't believe we are 2 days away until Dread! It's finally happening and I can't wait to play it!

Appreciated your nuanced take on Fusion. It’s my favorite Metroid game (and favorite game of all time,) but I can appreciate that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But it always boggles my mind when people completely write it off just because it’s more straightforward. They just say, “linear=bad,” and don’t even talk about the actually gameplay, which is masterful, in my opinion.

Oh make no mistake, Fusion is absolutely my cup of tea! I just happen to think Super and Zero Mission are slightly better as far as 2D games go. But I love it to pieces.

When I was a kid playing Zero Mission and Meele, I longed to learn more about who Samus was as a character and although the execution wasn't perfect, Metroid Other M turns out to be in my top 10 fave games of all time, so y'all can sleep if u want. Every year I rewatch the full movie along with Alien 1 + 2. True fans will always love Metroid and Samus even at the series' darkest, it makes the dawns ever more beautiful.

Dude?! Excellent quick fire review! Really like your take on most of the games. The only one I would change is MP3. Ive put over 135 hours into it. I was a huge fan of fps on the wii but they all had their issues in the pre Red Steel 2 days but Prime 3 came out and blew my mind. The Graphics were so amazing! I found the story and plot to be awesome. Loved the planetary travel as i felt it gave a more organic variety like the original game maxed out. The music was fantastic but the only thing that holds it back a bit was the voice acting. It wasnt the worst but im not writing home about it lol i forgive any issue I have bc that was the early days of true voice acting for Nintendo. Infact I think that might have been the first instance for them. Also really loved the in game achievement system. They hid some really interesting ones in there.

Ive dabbled in Metroid when I was younger before but now I am seriously playing through the series, so far almost done Metroid 2 on the Game Boy and I am loving them so far, really excited for the future games too! Im the kind of person who enjoys the positive aspects of things, so Im sure I will enjoy even the controversial games in the series

It’s funny I grew up in the 80s too but, I played the first Metroid on NES over my friend’s house, to this day I’ve never beat it (eventually ended up with my friend’s cartridge). Metroid 2 was the first Metroid game I owned and I played it religiously, beat the game on the original GameBoy!

I've never played other M but all the footage I see looks really dope, can someone explain what I'm missing? The idea of blending 2D with 3D like that seems awesome and it LOOKS really fluid with the combat.
What are it's shortcomings?
The story. Too much of it and changes Samus’s character too much.
I think Samus returns has the coolest boss fights. Those cutscene moments where you control the shooting are epic.

My favourite has to be Samus Returns because I fell in love with AM2R and Samus Returns therefor is just another great game based on the original. In general I like the 2D games more, but something about this "hunt" makes these games based on Metroid II special.
In terms of 3D games I like Prime 2 the most. It is hard, but also the most refined imo.

Kudos for being able to look past Samus not being the protagonist, as well as the chibi-like artstyle, both of which definitely aren't exactly synonymous with Metroid (and though Pinball might not be either, at least the red thread is still intact ... because morph ball).
I haven't played it, nor do I plan to, it doesn't look like it's something i'd enjoy, but the critique it got back then - although somewhat justified - just didn't seem fair on the gameplay itself, since it was mostly targetted at the lack of Samus and the choice of artstyle.

That's right, Metroid Prime 2 is my favorite game of all time, and imo it takes Prime 1 and just improves a whole lot upon it, ESPECIALLY the backtracking. If I started ranting about how bad and excessive the backtracking in Prime is, I'd be here for a long time - Echoes also has better combat and bosses (arguably some of the best bosses in the series) and by far the best atmosphere in a Metroid game only rivaled by Fusion imo. I don't hate Prime by any means, it's one of my most beloved games, but I just vastly prefer Echoes for trying to do something new with Metroid. Also Sanctuary Fortress is one of the best areas in a video game.

So I'm 3 days into my first Metroid game. Where the hell is Rob? I know you said you were going to take time off for this game. I'm imaging some kind of "Lawnmower Man" scenario. Take a break, man. Get back to us about it for a moment & then you can finish the game. As for me, I'm loving it. I was off to a rough start but I'm getting used to the controls & can't wait for a 2nd playthrough so I can do a better job. The moment I fell in love was when I defeated the first big boss. The one heavily featured in the trailers. But when I saw the huge chained up monster with the infected bellybutton, I was definitely all in. He barfs on you & throws his fingernail clippings at you. It's great. I hope to see even more disgusting abominations tonight when I get home from work.

Metroid returns 2 on Gameboy is a phenomenal game. It's atmospheric and awesome. My best game ever. You can also hear the voice of Emmii in there

Interesting ranking, unfortunately not having a GameCube as a kid I don’t have much appreciation for the Prime Trilogy and have always felt it was responsible for the lack of “true” Metroid games. Trying to play Prime with a GameCube now has been very difficult, the controls are super clunky, the graphics are painful on a modern display without those soft CRT scan lines, and for those reasons I’ve been hoping for a Prime Trilogy port since I got a switch a few years ago, an HD port would go a long way since the models themselves were solid.

Rob do you have the NES and SNES controllers for the Switch? I finally was able to get them and love them. They feel legit. I will be getting the N64 and Genesis pads as soon as I am able.
As a huge Metroid fan It may be shocking but I have never played any of the prime series. The Gamecube came out during a time that I had a girlfriend and was in college which meant zero gaming time. To this day I still regret not playing them in their prime... pun intended :) I feel if I play them now it just won't be the same as they are very old and show their age. I am hoping Nintendo does a trilogy remaster, if not I will at least play prime 4 and finally experience what all the hype was about with the 3d Metroid series.
Nah, they've aged very well. If you can, I'd recommend the trilogy and Pinball

I've played a bit of them but I've never beaten any of them. I got stuck in the original Prime and eventually sold my Gamecube. I've played very, very little of Prime 2 or 3. I want to beat them and get into them because I've loved Metroid from the moment I played the original when I was 5 years old, but for some reason I just haven't been able to get deep into the Prime series the way I have the 2d games, all of which I've beaten with the exception of Samus Returns which I'm getting close to beating.

Glad to see Other M finally getting some recognition. The dialog in hindsight is cringey but I loved it, was the first Metroid game I owned and I'll admit that after playing some of the others it sits at the bottom of my list, but it still holds a special place in my heart

Other M suffered from nationalization failure, i think the gameplay was intended to be cinematic like a movie but we all know how the original super mario bros movie came out, and sadist part is that the Japanese release is simply better than the internationalized releases

8.5/10 for Metroid Other M. Awesome! Love it when someone gives this game some love. Like you, yes, I don't think it's a great game, but it was a good game nonetheless and I enjoyed playing it. Metroid Prime 2 Echoes is actually my favorite of the Prime games. Love the light and dark theme of it. There's still so many Metroid games I haven't played and unless Nintendo ports them over to the Switch, I guess I'll never get a chance. Awesome review. Can't wait for Metroid Dread.

Posting this comment in this video because there is not yet a new one post dread launch. The intro to dread telling is the meaning on Metroid in the chozo language to me pretty clearly defines what Metroid will be referring to in future games.
I actually agree with you on Other M. It was an ambitious project, it tried to do a lot of really interesting things. The execution was flawed in some of it, but the idea of where the game was trying to go isn't hard to see and there so many good things intact in the game despite it's flaws. For me nothing beats Prime, but I can't say that I've ever played a Metroid game that I didn't like. To me Other M is a double edged sword, there are still tons of positives.
Great video! Fun to see some quick thoughts and rating for each game. I specially agree about Samus Returns being a much greater game that some people give it credit for. My main disagree is about Fusion tho, that game is the 2nd best in the series for me, and it surprises me that you don't like the boss fights. I think it has the best boss fights out of the 2D series, in competition with SR on that department. Though the Prime games are overall much more solid on the approach to boss fights that the 2D games.

Personally I'd raise fusion to a 10 (my favorite 2d game) and would drop other m down a full point. Other M was definitely better than people give it credit for but the authorization system for your gear and the way they handled hard mode really dragged down the experience for me.

You are SO damn lucky! I'm stuck w/the standard physical version of Dread. Don't even have the amiibo. Then again, I live in the US and since I'm essentially stuck on house arrest due to medical reasons (unrelated to COVID-19) and the scarcity of the stuff I doubt I'll ever get my hands on it.

I never was able to play samus returns because my new 3dsxl broke.... I tried replacing the battery like nintendo told me now it doesn't make audio... complete sooo nintendo is to blame!

Metroid NES - 2 (You can't force me to play this game even if you threatened to chop an arm off - okay maybe idk)
Metroid 2: Return of Samus - 3 (I'm Gen Z i need colours okay?)
Super Metroid - 8.5 (The physics drive me mad and the difficulty/confusion gets to me but need I go further?)
Metroid Prime - 9 (Just make the graphics better and boom AMAZING)
Metroid Fusion - 7.5 (I loved it but I hate Adam and its too hard for me :p)
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - 7.5 (Its also too hard and uses a cliché trope but outside of that the puzzles seem really chill)
Metroid Zero Mission - 10 (Honestly I should have started with this one, its quick fun and takes supers best ideas)
Metroid Prime pinball - 5 (I suck at pinball so its defo a me problem)
Metroid Prime Hunters - 4 (I didn't witness the online era and the main campaign felt dry and repetitive
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - 8 (I'm biased it was my first Metroid game plus the story is probs the best in the whole series)
Metroid other M - 6 (I respect the attempt too and for SOME story elements I defend it too!)

Idk I only bought Other M recently and thus am very far removed from the controversy when it released. I played it on original hardware and man.. to me this game just is not fun at all. Not only is it not fun but the story is so hilariously bad that I could stand watching the cutscenes. Granted the combat is fun (when you don't have to use missiles that is) and the visuals are impressive.
But most importantly the Wii Remote is this games downfall. The other criticism I have pale in comparison. There is no reason that it couldn't have been played with a Nunchuck

Perhaps it's a controversial thought but I don't think there will ever be a better Metroid than super Metroid
Dread, in my opinion, outclasses Super Metroid. Controls aren't as clunky, the fact that you don't have to cycle through missile types and Power Bomb, (he X-ray scope was replaced with a radar pulse of what blocks are breakable) make it much less of a hassle, the creativity of the Speed Booster and Shinespark puzzles and even the enhanced use, Kraid's secret 1-shot kill animation when you Sequence Break and get the Grapple Beam and Morph Ball Bombs, and every other Boss' finishing animations, the unique design of Samus' Power Suits, hell the new upgrades to Samus' arsenal like the Storm Missile and Cross Bomb and her dash melee counter that deals damage and stuns the enemy make it so much more satisfying when you're clearing out a room.

Unpopular opinion: Super Metroid has really aged but die-hard fans will never admit it because nostalgia. The gameplay feels clunky and unpolished compared to modern metroidvanias in general and while i agree games shouldnt be holding your hand all the time (Fusion's biggest mistake) Super Metroid is unfairly cryptic.

I'm not an enjoyer of retro games, often feeling uncomfortable with the controls and clunky mechanics. Yet Super felt to fresh and easy to play for me when i discovered it a few years ago. On the other hand for instance, while i'm more of a Zelda fan than a Metroid one, i just can't stand how dated A Link to the Past feels when i play it.
What about AM2R> I think it deserves a review. Being a fanmade project it is incredible as it still holds the Nintendo pedigree. If you played it what are your thoughts? Can you give a review score for it?

First hunt was a launch title for the DS it was a demo for metroid prime hunters but everything about it was completely different from the actual hunters game. There were 3 different modes and it even included some trailers for hunters if you tapped the title screen on the right place

The story is one of the worst ever made in a game! The gameplay was barren, bland, and controlled poorly! The graphics were... ok, I'll give a point for that. But nah, Other M is garbage

Most of the problems with other m would’ve been fixed if the game was just set in the past and was the first in the timeline however with that being said it’s still the worst Metroid game and the only bad one in my opinion

I haven't played federation force, prime pinball, or the original Metroid 2, and I've never beaten the original nes Metroid, but I've played and beaten the rest and here's my ranking:
9: Prime Hunters
8: Zero Mission
7: Other M
6: Samus Returns
5: Metroid Fusion
4: Metroid Prime 3
3: Metroid Prime
2: Metroid Prime 2
1: Super Metroid
The only reason that Samus Returns is number 6 is because I hate the map layout of that game with a passion. If the map layout was less clustered and more spread out the game would be boosted to spot 4. Other than that everything else is pretty straight forward.
Edit: forgot Zero mission, is fixed now.
