Here's how he's doing it: Kim Jung Gi has a tremendously advanced understanding of form, anatomy and basic fundamentals that he's assembled a huge amount of templates in his brain of various subject he can draw at will, whether it be a tiger, a car or an astronaut. Combined with a huge amount of different types of subject matter (religious icons, contemporary issues, previous projects) he can mix and match all of the templates and basically create whatever he can think of. Perspective is not an issue for him, for he's simply following the rules of perspective as he draws, comparing every figure to the figure previously drawn. By moving steady and slow, and being mindful of the overall perspective of the piece, he's able to put everything where it needs to be. As an experiment, try drawing a bunch of simple cubes (non-transparent) free hand with pen in proper perspective. What he's doing isn't all that different. Every line dictates the placement of the next line. If a character's head is positioned this way, that means his shoulders should be like this, since his shoulders are like this, his hips will be placed here etc. Most importantly he's not calculating, he's reacting. He's drawing faster than he thinks, which has come about by habit (his own words). This level skill is absolutely attainable, but one should not approach it unless you have a monstrous amount of skill with more traditional methods of drawing, ie pencil and eraser. We should all aspire to draw like him.
***** It's a hierarchical progression: A single box in perspective - a head in perspective - an arm, a leg, a whole figure etc. Drawing a figure in perspective without any guides or reference is hard enough, let alone making it beautiful and pleasing to look at. Stagger your focus from micro to macro, but keep it contained within one figure. Don't get hung up on perfection, which is easy to do when working with perspective. Master Gi's works are by no means "perfect" - if they were they'd be boring. No line, shape or form in his works are perfect, they simply just work. The foundational techniques he's accumulated throughout his life acts as the operating system that allows his to work like this. He's stated himself that he works a step ahead of his thinking. Practice is working in a manner where you are looking for weaknesses so you can sharpen up some dull areas in your toolkit. Pure drawing however is displayed in the video above, and is very different from practice. Keep the two separated, and you'll be surprised by what you can accomplish when you leave constant self-critiques at the door. When you first sit down to draw, practice. After 30 minutes or so, once your brain, fingers and mind are warmed up, start drawing.
***** It depends on what you want to accomplish when you sit down to draw. A teacher of mine once said "if you're drawing the same thing you always draw it's just masturbation." When a professional concert pianist sits down to practice, he/she has a goal in mind - I want to improve this section, I need better technique on this part, etc. However when a concert pianist sits down to perform, self-critique must be left behind. What Master Kim is doing with these drawing shows is performance. When you practice, fix your mistakes and do not compare yourself to Kim Jung Gi while you work. Set out on a goal when you sit down like a concert pianist. Study perspective, not another's interpretation of perspective.
benttoenail i agree with everything you just said, minus the eraser thing, specially if you are a beginner. Erasing just stops you from getting in the pace of drawing without thinking, and make you less careful about your strokes. if you make a mistake, draw it again, learn from your mistakes not by erasing them, acknowledge them as something necesary to progress.
Years of practice, years of mastering. Like Jiro master of Sushi said People can become master by doing same thing hundred times. Its not a give nor talent, talent is born from a years of hardwork and practicing
No, I can't master this. Not even if I've done it thousands of time. This is special because not anyone can achieve this kind of skill. Kim Jung Gi is gifted indeed. His sense of perspective is amazingly accurate. How he put details to everything is exceptional. How his brain plan and layout his works is stunning which make him draw freely without drafting first. He must had been practicing this for decades but that wasn't the only factor to be this good.
Totally agree about mastering something but actually disagree with the thing about talent. Talent does exist, it's the predisposition that someone has towards a specific matter, usually inherited (genes!) But... even if your whole body is meant to be the best musician, painter or whatever-thing in the world... if you do nothing to become that, then you will never be that. I just wanted to add that because, at the end of the day, even if you are the most gifted person in the world, the one who actually pursues his goals and trains for years in order to master them is always gonna "win" PS: ***** Genius exist, indeed. But if they'd had the bad luck to never be expose to the thing they were "genius", then they'd never have shown that. Or even if they know they are but are just not interested in their gift, then they would be a potato in that. Phanprasit Boonnao Yes, that's not the only factor, but is probably the most important. I have met, for example, guitarist with no talent for the instrument that, when they had de luck of meeting an appropiate teacher, they became beasts in the instrument... or at least the few that were willing to sacrifice their free time to pursue that goal.
bunnyfreakz The more someone practices the better they will get, but there is no way your average Joe is going to create masterful works of art simply through practice alone.
purpledrinnk This kind of logic makes no sense whatsoever. If practice isn't what makes someone good at something, then what the fuck is it? Scientifically, there is no possible way for you to get better at something other than by doing it. Where does this "talent" come from, and how do you define this talent? You can't just be born with all the information necessary to create incredible drawings. He had to learn just like everybody else. There is no reason more people can't be like Kim Jung Gi, in fact there are other artists who can draw like him, straight to final lines, and others, notably concept artists, who can create equally detailed drawings and paintings, but use construction like you normally would. The only thing that separates those artists like Kim Jung Gi that can draw straight to final lines vs normal concept artists, is just that they train themselves to specifically do that. I've actually tried it, and it's not as difficult as it seems, you just have to think a little more before placing your lines. Kim Jung Gi has said that he filled tons of sketchbooks when he was a kid, sometimes multiple sketchbooks a day. And the reason he draws the way he does is just out of habit, since when he was a teacher he would always have to draw things out for his students, and all that construction took too much time, so he just started drawing straight to final lines instead, and it worked. I'm sick and tired of you idiots who think people can just be born gifted and don't actually have to work hard to get to where they are. It's ignorant, it's sickening, and it's insulting to the artists themselves.
Kim Jung gi, lu makan apa sih? Gambar apa aja lu bisa dari imajinasi, bagi gw gambar itu penting. tanpa gadget lu bisa berimajinasi bro, mantappp, thanks for coming to my country.
People are naive, they get overwhelmed by his skill, they question the obvious, kim did something that many artist are able to do but not do, loosing the guide lines, all good artists can drawi with guide lines, they put them in there to get an idea, kim is just an example of someone who understood the guidelines and knew where everything would go, he stoped using the guide lines because he already had them in his mind, he just threw the finished result on the paper so if you want to do that just buy a sketchbook and draw everything you drew up until know just without guide lines but be aware this will be pointless if you cant draw well with them, I respect kim for taking that step and currently training the same thing, But remeber one thing, you will not be able to replicate his succes by using the tools he is using.
but i don't think anyone is on his level, yet. he's just a master, but maybe in 3 years or more, there will be people better than him. because you know, human evolves.
i've seen people doing what he does at a way smaller scale, so it definatelly possbile for more artists to do it if they want to, also if you buy his sketchbook you'll see he is using rough shapes to get an idea of what he is going to draw too.
I agree with you in *most* cases hard work and practice will absolutely make you a better artist and you will get professional results and even be awe inspiring in your abilities. However, in Kim Jung Gi's case, this is not so. It is not possible to get this ability thru practice. Kim Jung Gi is a savant. He is able to draw anything in any perspective in great details from memory alone. Perfectly. Even the greatest artists and illustrators of past and present could not do this. Kim Jung Gi is a freak of nature and he defies what we are all told. He is an exception. It will do not good to study his work because it is not attainable even by the *best* comic artists, concept artists and illustrators working today. Ask one of them. If they are honest, they will look at you an weep softly, understanding this ability is beyond them. Kim Jung Gi is on the level of Einstein and Beethoven in his natural "genius". I do not know this for a fact, but I bet when he was a child he could do this. Granted not at the level he is at now, but his core ability he was born with.
John Colasante Have you read my first comment, i think it was scott robertson that was show caseing the sketchbook of one of his students and he made similar drawings of commandos and such, it is very possible if you train it.
Holanderos I did read your first comment. I will reiterate that I believe Kim Jung Gi's ability to be rare and extraordinary and I do not believe this ability can come from 10,000 hours of life drawing and daily sketching for 20 years. If you know of someone else who can do it, that person could also do it when they were 5 years old. Let me remind you he does massive multi-figure compositions in fish eye perspective with detailed car engine internals, with NO REFERENCE. Are you kidding me? Have you seen the movie Amadeus? If not, watch it and you will appreciate more what I am saying. Antonio Salieri was a famous composer too.
Baladimbowbing I also think he has very meticulous memory of the things he sees, it's like the sketch is already in his head and he just covers it with ink.
Considering how much he draws, he probably mastered it in his late teens and just continued to master it decade after decade. But it does all come with a cost of time.
Well that's a big surprise, I don't know if Kim went to Comic con Indonesia, and yet i didn't discovered him at that time. FYI Comic Con Indonesia in the early years were held independently.
Man if you had a concept for any kind of box game and used him as the concept artist stuff would probably fly off the shelf just for his work alone hehe

Tú no eres quien para decirme que puede darme curiosidad y que no.

I can sit in a chair and watch this guy draw all day long... really godly
we love you, Maestro.

the man is a beast, i've never seen anything like, it's fucking crazy good. I swear he has photographic memory
Photoimaginitive is more like it. He can make up clear photos in his mind.
wouldn't that mean that he has to remember the thing in the photo exactly how it is?
Baladimbowbing I also think he has very meticulous memory of the things he sees, it's like the sketch is already in his head and he just covers it with ink.
Baladimbowbing I am afraid its not enough you said so, he also have the calculation and organization of his images.
kim jung gi pernah ke Indo WOW!
I can't believe people like him actually exist. His art is breathtaking!
Grande Talento ! Fantasticoo !

Yup, at Popcon asia 2013
Stylenya kayak Pak Teguh Santoso komikus Indonesia !
sekilas memang mirip begitu ya mas, namun alm Teguh Santosa jauh lebih tegas garis karakternya ala2 hero. Kalo Kim garisnya lebih lemes/ bebas
Mantab broo!!!
