What I find so fascinating and is not just that he doesn't use any references, it's that there's no discernable pattern to any of it. He'll draw part of the head, then a totally disconnected hand, and a shoe, then work on the head some more, and eventually tie it all together perfectly. I know it makes perfect sense to him, but it's mindblowing to me. His perspective skills are just crazy, and he doesn't waste a single stroke.
well said... its as if he traces a picture that only he can see starting at different areas and bringing it altogether to make an overall image that always works... a once in a generation artist
Every single thing about your talent is amazing, imagination, perspective, how you could draw that imagination out...etc much more. But there's a single thing that amaze me all the time when i saw you drawing is how you can draw a whole picture from a little thing. For example, how you can draw a complete human starting from his wrinkle. Etc.
The brush question is the most stupid and hateful one, i always laugh at people asking for the brush as if by buying the same brush one could get his skills. Is ridiculous. NOW....this brush in particular, wow, i mean i love good calligraphy brushes for watercolor painting/drawing, and this brush seems to have the most beautiful relationship between point, stiffness, spring, and capacity. So in this particular video i won't only praise Kim Jung Gi, but also to whoever made that brush....good job bro!
All kidding aside, I believe that there are forms of meditation that can help you to unlock the abilities that Kim has. If you think about it, your mind already has the ability to perfectly recreate everything you've ever seen as well as the ability to create new things out of the images that you've seen and what you've experienced in your life. You do this every night when you dream. Every time you see a person in a dream, it's obvious that your mind has already mastered the ability to perfectly recreate a human form. So the problem isn't mastering the ability to create with your conscious mind, but how to access the abilities which are latent to the subconscious mind _with_ your conscious mind. There are forms of mediation that train you to imagine an image and to hold it in your mind's eye as an act of concentration. Skilled practitioners of this kind of meditation, purportedly, can even project this image into the space around them as if they are looking at any common object. Kim has said in interviews that he can actually see the image on the page in front of him before he draws it. This is an act of mental projection that may come naturally to Kim, but which, I believe, can be deliberately developed through concentration meditation. If this doesn't sound totally insane to you, do a search for how to create a thought-form and cross search that with the name Franz Bardon. You can ignore all of the esoteric mumbo-jumbo if that doesn't appeal to you, but the meditation practices that he advocates, particularly in his book, Initiation into Hermertics, I believe, can unlock and enhance the creative powers of every artist. Annie Besant (in her book Thought-forms) is another great resource to look at for learning about thought-forms and the preliminary practices used to prepare oneself to create them which develop the powers of concentration and mental projection that would be of particular interest to visual artists.
@Viewer De L'ombre Sorry for break your illusion, but that is not the case. He is gifted with the ability to visualize and put on paper what is on his head. You can practice a lot but, to be Kim Jung Gi, first of all, you can't reach his level, never, even if you practice the same stuff that he practice or study.
@Viewer De L'ombre Mmmmmmm you didn't understand my point. You put that everyone with a brain, an arm, a hand and time can draw like him, which is not the case. He has a unique ability.
Jung Gi wasn’t born with this ability. He has drawn since he was a child, and has spent decades mastering his craft. He himself even admitted that it took him over 10 years to be able to draw onto a page without reference and this was after he was already an artist. Your defeatist attitude is poison to not only yourself but also to those that are unfortunate enough to encounter you. YOU will never reach this level of expertise because YOU have decided so. Now keep your thoughts to yourself. Do you lack the ability to imagine images in your mind? Can’t you visualise what something would look like in a space or on a piece of paper? Most people should be able to, but it’s more difficult than that, things are blurry and not how one would want them to be when attempting to place those images onto the paper with whatever material one is using. Yet there is still something on the paper, and that something came from ones mind. From ones imagination. The task was executed poorly, but it was still accomplished. If something can be done, then it can be done better; improved upon. This will take years of conscious practice to get to the level of Kim Jung Gi. This is possible, he himself and those around him have talked about how others are coming in his wake and doing exactly what he is doing. Perhaps not to the same level, but he has years more experience. How many years have your practiced this for? Or did you give up after a week? Did you even try? I doubt it.
Masters claim they can see the image on the paper before they put any ink down. Here's your proof those claims are true. Somehow he sees it before drawing it. The wondrous thing is he sees EVERYTHING! So amazing. This is a form a genius, no doubt.
looks like your standard Chinese calligraphy brush. the japanese company yasutomo makes some that are relatively easy to find. I'm assuming his is a korean made brush.
I love to see how his style can remain loose at such a high level of skil . And that he makes "mistakes" too, just at such an astronomically higher standard than most, and none that seem to "break" the image.
It really doesnt matter also he once said he hates that question as you can clearly see what tyoe of pen he is using. In this case its a calligraphy brush
I know he doesn't like this question. Lol that is why I asked it. He is one of my favorite artist. Of course I know it doesn't matter. I paint on cardboard boxes and draw with everything that makes a value.

the reference is in his head
It's years and year and years of practice.
Yeah basically he is tracing the picture in his head.
I’ve always thought that above all else, the sheer volume of his work is the most truly amazing.
So relaxing to watch a master at work.
And you can tell he doesn't even have to think about what he is doing..its like breathing to him when he draws.
I've never seen something both so free flowing and intentional simultaneously. Truly a master.
