For the multiplayer at 40:35, whoever is playing as Carver will experience hallucinations. They'll see things that whoever is playing as Isaac can't see. I feel like this is a detail you'd enjoy checking on if you ever go back!
I do kinda wish they’d just committed to the RE5/6 approach and had an AI companion the entire campaign. Giving you the choice of playing Carver or Isaac. Cause for people like me, who didn’t have anyone in my friend group who were fans of the series, you never got to experience Carver’s side. Or any of the co-op missions for that matter.
That was such a cool addition, I was Carver and seeing crazy stuff, like giant nutcracker statues and my friend was like, what? I don't see anything. We shared screenshots and it was really cool. To me that shows that the people who made it actually cared about the game and did what they could to make it fun.
Thanks, I just played and beat the game for the first time a month ago, I haven't played the dlc yet, and I was wondering if there would be any difference when you play as John
Ellie should have been the other playable character in my humble opinion, where she gets the non hallucination story and Issac gets the losing his mind story
EA also made the studio change the story a bit. The team wanted to make a inner Issac who keeps talking to issac. But EA said "No...CO-OP is popular make that" and that's why we have Carver.
Hey they wanted to do something really awesome with coop too but EA cut that at well and rushed it lol. Coop was supposed to have Issac and other guy experience different hallucinations and other really cool things that tied the characters together.
My biggest gripe is I want more Space ...I was so bummed when 2 hours into the game which I was enjoying and .....then bang crash on a snowy planet for 12 hours........they should have just called it( Dead Cold ).....Wtf. Happend to Space???
Shadow Isaac was apparently also supposed to be the CO-OP character - Being a figment of Isaac's imagination. Which is also why Carver disappears and reappears at random. Shadow Isaac was also supposed to be the unseen force responsible for picking off members of the group. EA didn't like the dementia and mental illness theme, so they forced the devs to cut Shadow Isaac.

@@torquetheprisoner I never understood the people that complained about the microtransactions in this game. They're nowhere near as in your face or pay to win as some of the microtransactions in other EA games and other games in general. Like, not even on the same planet.
That's one of the things it got right story-wise. The love-triangle plot reeked of a lazy attempt for drama. I would've settled for Isaac and Ellie trying to reconnect while embarking on their mission.
That’s a VERY, extremely unpopular opinion that I happen to share. Herd Mentality. If their friends say DS3 sucks but they have never heard of DS3 or DS in general, they will happily agree because... herd mentality.
The thing about this review. Having years of listening to others poop on this title gives it low expectations that are easily surpassed. This isn't an unplayable game, its not even bad, it just falls short of what the franchise was or could have been.
It’s no sonic 06 that’s for sure. It’s still enjoyable and a fun shooter, but not very deadspace like 1 or 2. The space ships and alien city sections are fun though
It’s a very forgettable game that becomes infuriating in the context of being a sequel to two of the best horror games of a console generation. Basically everything interesting from a gameplay or character perspective was destroyed because EA wanted mass appeal. What they did with Ellie (making her a generic damsel in distress and making her a background character when the game includes co op with generic shooter man) is mind bogglingly stupid
Sad to know that we'll never figure out what that disturbing secret to stopping the markers and brethren moons were, but I'm happy that we even got a game as amazing the three Dead Space games. This series will always hold a special place in my heart and so will the talented people that made up Visceral Games. Thank you so much for this amazing retrospective series.
Ironically this was my first dead space game when it came out i thought it was scary as hell even with all the shooting military guns plus the crafting system made it addicting as hell i was 14 or 15 think . then played the other two in backwards order watched the movies, read one of the novels and i thoroughly love this series
Holy crap 67 minutes? _HOLD ON TO YA BUTTS!_ Edit: Great send off to the franchise! Wow u really benefitted from not having prior ties/hopes for DS3. I remember seeing the trailer and going "Dead Space but setting of The Thing!" and being so happy, then finding out EA had EA'd all over it 😭 Figuring this is what they needed to do to survive, ok, but then cancelling DS anyway really stung. The worst of both worlds. At least we got this Retrospective out of it!
I was gonna say... what people say RE 5 did to escalate over 4, Dead Space 3 leaned 10 times harder into that. Unlike Jared, I did feel like DS3 was a slog. Just nonstop swarms of enemies and a few strange difficulty spikes. And I would argue it felt unbalanced for a single player, instead balanced as if it was being played co-op.
@Z390 Agree. RE5 is actually an incredibly fun time. People were just assholes and didn't equip the AI with anything decent and then wondered why they weren't helping. And obviously because you play as Chris by default, everyone essentially shat on Sheva and blamed re5 on HER.
I really loved that Carter would see things that Isaac couldn't. It was an awesome mechanic and was so cool the first time me and a friend played. It was so trippy playing as Isaac as he was saying there was stuff in front of him that I couldn't see.
My ex and I used to have dates on Dead Space 3 when she had to move to another city for a while we'd see each other on the weekends but it was nice to sit looking at the beautiful landscapes and talk about our day. It might not be a perfect game but I'll always think fondly of it
For a nightmare ending of Dead Space, image that Brethren moons were impress by Iassc victory over one of their brother that they determine to make him a brethren moon from the corpses from earth.
@Z390 the dev said it has little connections to pubg but it’s not a story for pubg it’s still it’s own game so if you don’t know anything about the universe it’s fine you can go in as it’s own story so I wouldn’t worry too much
After the credits when Eli hears Isaac over the radio I always took that as she's starting to hallucinate after spending so long around Markers. Like with Nicole and Isaac. The Markers are influencing her
By the end of Dead Space 2, and all of Dead Space 3, I kind of took to the idea that Ellie was like Lexine, in that the Marker signals and Brethren Moons had no effect on her. It lines up, she never hallucinates, she doesn't go crazy at any point, and her sanity is never wavering at any points compared to the rest of the cast, so her being immune- even if never stated- made the most sense to me. Now as for why she heard Isaac? Well, I'm sure Dead Space 4, which would have starred her, would have elaborated on that more. But thanks to EA EA-ing the series, we'll never know.
@@AvalancheReviews Almost all of my play time on Dead Space 3 went in to customizing my weapons. Thanks for the video! It's always great to see someone give the game some credit. Instead of outright not acknowledging its existence.
On the issue of weapons - ironically, I found that a fast-firing weapon was the ideal solution, but the best automatic weapon does NOT come from the Military Engine. It is, in fact, the Telemetry Spike + Diffraction Torus. It creates a rivet machinegun with a pretty low damage per shot, but a RIDICULOUS fire rate, very high ammo capacity, and good stopping power. Slap stasis coating or acid bath on it, sling on an underbarrel force gun for crowd control, and you have yourself the all-rounder ultimate destruction weapon that will let you deal with anything at any range. Another quirk of the game, as you pointed out, lies in the universal ammo system. Through experimentation, I and many other people have deduced that it ALWAYS, ALWAYS takes 4 universal ammo to reload an empty magazine. Rocket launcher with 2 rockets per magazine? This means each rocket costs 2 ammo. Rivet chaingun with 400 rounds? One ammo equates 100 rounds. What this means is, the magazine size upgrades are the second best ammo saving mechanic in the game (direct damage upgades being the first one). The rivet chaingun (telemetry spike + diffraction torus) starts with 100-150 rounds base, I forget. But slap enough ammo upgrade chips on it, and you can stretch 1 universal ammo to kill several of the tougher necromorphs. The simple truth of more ammo capacity -> more ammo efficiency absolutely ruins any kind of ammo preservation balance the game might have had. And it's all due to the way universal ammo works.
Personally I didn’t care for the weapon customization. I often don’t like having to take time away from exploring and fighting just to ensure my arsenal was optimized.
@@clydemarshall8095 respectable. That's why there's an option for hardcore min/maxers to get the best loot in optional areas and more casuals get good enough upgrades to carry them through the story.
@@o.j.phillips7754 Funnily enough, I actually explored the optional areas thoroughly because I was invested in the story I found in the audiologs. I found out after that there's apparently a lot more substance to many narrative moments if you play co-op because of the cutscene interactions between Carver and Isaac. That's why Carver's character development feels so sudden in the single player only run. The devs built the game around you having seen those co-op cutscenes that further developed him. Really, if they were dead set on co-op, they should have given the option to play through with an A.I. playing Carver.
Don't remember that one seems like it falls under the category of fake difficulty as it happens in games from time to time and a lot in the older games.
If you wondering, on the PC, there's a bug in chapter 13 with spider like boss fight. You supposedly down it, then use the harpoon to tear it apart. But, it keep glitching out of harpoon, making the fight impossible to finish. The only way to bypass this fight is using jetpack cheat and fly up the cliff where you'll force to take the next cutscene.
Presentation : Glen Schofield is a painter. I would not be surprised if he came over to the art director and said : "I want these people to look exactly as they look on the sketch".
It breaks my heart that Dead Space 2 didn’t sell as much as it should have. I’m replaying it now and it’s one of the most polished, enjoyable games I’ve played, ever. It’s environmental design and combat are brilliant. Maybe I’m biased, I love this series.. I even read the books. But the first two are genuine classics
Going through Dead Space 1 to 2 to 3 in quick succession, it's quite dazzling how much these games improve visually. They're not Uncharted 1 to 2 level of visual jump, but the consistency is there. DS2 has a lot more environmental variety and higher geometry complexity throughout, vastly more unique art assets everywhere (hell, they render an entire space station for a halo jump - same assets notwithstanding). Dead Space 3 has ambient occlusion, screen space reflections, tons of cube map reflections, vastly more light sources, bokeh like depth of field, higher polycount for enemies and characters, higher rez shadows all around. In Dead Space 1, the visor light was just a point light, which means it never actually emanated light unto your surroundings. In Dead Space 2, the visor light was technically still a point light, BUT the devs manually inserted light coming from the visor in a few sections where lights cut out OR mostly when you transition from one zone to another using a vent/shaft. In Dead Space 3, the visor light is no longer a point light. It's a proper light source. It always emanates light in the shape of the visor display. Well, for the spaceship parts at least. Not sure the visor light still works while on Tau Volantis.
I really don’t like the writing in this game. All of the characters act like they’re in a parody and make so many poor decisions, plus the dialogue felt much more natural in 1 and 2. The sense of urgency and oppression was constant and kept things moving in the other games. 3 rolls around and a lot of that chaotic energy is just... gone? The lore was nice, but Isaac’s journey felt incredibly played out, Ellie loses all of her charm and Carver ends up dooming the universe like what the fuck? Definitely not a bad game by any means but nothing special. I’m just in awe at how uninspired it felt. I did like how the ending shows Ellie alone on the escaping ship though, keeping tradition since the first game.
I have a critique about the weapon customization that people have complained about. I am actually happy for it because its years beyond that second one and hes an engineer. So its like where finally getting to use some knowledge he could have gained from weapons on top of finally getting to be an engineer beyond just doing the odd puzzle.
Other than the shoe-horned Microtransactions and universal ammo, I thought this game was a blast and loved where it went with the story. My only major complaint is stuff being locked in the main campaign behind co-op.
I like finding stuff like your channel. I'm about to binge everyone of these you've made. Dude please keep it up. I speak for everyone when I say we'll keep the ideas coming if you master work them together like this was.
This has to be my favorite retrospective episode you’ve ever done. There were some arguments made throughout your Resident Evil Retrospective I didn’t agree with but completely understood your point, (see: the discussion on what defines survival horror as a genre), same with the silent hill series. But this video on the third Dead Space articulated the extreme highs and lows of this game I couldn’t put into words when I first played it at 13 years old. There’s a strange sense of catharsis that comes from finally seeing someone able to adequately put these feelings to words. Great job as always!
I have lived through so many games through you. With work and family you allow me to play these games without doing so. You sir, are my honest to God favorite tuber. I've watched the 8 hour RE retrospective about five times and when I'm at work and need a good listen while I'm closing up shop, I put you on. Your voice is velvet and honestly, I'd love to see you go into game voice acting.
Even though you dont get as much views as other reviewers, I always watch your reviews and love them. You go into much more depth and detail than other reviewers do. I listen to your reviews even when I sleep because I love your voice and your reviews
I am really curious about what happened to Lexine after the Severed DLC, since she is the only person completely immune to the Markers. It would've been cool for her to meet Isaac at some point.
There were theories Lexine kept herself hidden before her child is born. There was an opportunity for a team up crossing path with Issac for Dead Space 4. However when Visceral's development with Battlefield: Hardline didn't do well in the sellings, E.A. chopped the company out of it's line. The opportunity was loss.
I just want to personally say thank you for taking the time to play the entire dead space series, I've loved each and every video! Keep up the great work.
Story was quite bad.... especially the "love triangle." Didn't like what they did to Ellie's character... Norton was an annoying and unnecessary 3rd wheel / backstabber... Danik was an annoying generic villain who wants to destroy humanity... Carver was OK enough but not really memorable either... and felt really bad seeing Isaac at every moment deal with with these often annoying supporting cast.
@@mr.sinjin-smyth the story was bad. The writing was bad. I just can't believe we went from the heights of environmental story telling of part 1 to the oh hum tv series shlock of part 3.
I have over 70 hours on this game, got it from the Humble Bundle of July 2013 i think, along with MoH 2010, DS1 and another game and i had a total blast. I loved the first two games, the thing with this one is that i had someone to play with and it was an awesome coop experience. I was never really scared with the first two games, but i really liked the challenge of a survival horror aspect of them, so with this one i started playing on the highest difficulty with my friend, oh boy 2013, much simpler high school times back then.
Also I love how close to the community you are man I really respect that from a guy who reviews games that have fan bases that can be quite volatile about them
Thank you so much for these videos man, as a long time fan of the deadspace it's really nice to see a full breakdown of the series from fresh eyes. Really appreciate the thought and detail you put into these videos and look forward to more that you do
I may be a fanboy of the saga, but i've never found any of the issues pointed in this review. Yeah the EA business model is crap and may tainted the view of the game pre-launch but i personally found out of proportion calling this a betrayal to the saga. I think this game deserves more justice.
Pretty sure most people saw a direction and didn't want it going there. I'm happy it ended here instead of getting worse. If this sold well EA would go "so our tactics work, let's bring it up to 100" and that would be awful.
I know you won't probably read this like ever, but first, your retrospective reviews are just awesome and detailed. Second, There's one feature missing in the retrospective for Dead Space 3 that I thought was worth a section for itself alone. The way that, while playing in coop, whoever gets Carver will hallucinate and that is never part of the marketing campaign. so when you're playing with a buddy, that is genuinely scary and creepy. An elevator ride will be just that for Isaac, but my friend would be saying..." hey, wtf, what is going on here? what are those pictures?" and I'll be like "What pictures?" - "Here, man, on this wall!" - "I don't see anything... - Hey what are these birthday presents? - These ones, man... - Dude, these are coffins! - No, man, they are bd presents... Holy crap!
The first Dead Space was such a great experience playing back on release. It was an absolute welcome breath of fresh air of a game. Something we all wanted but didn't even realise or put it into words that we did.
Before I start this review I’d like to express my love for Dead Space 3. I know the reputation but what can I say? I was 14 or so and I really just had a ball playing it.
It's funny that I've heard so many say Isaac attempting contact after the credits undoes everything. After my first playthrough, I thought this was the end of the series and played on the horror trope of being stuck there. Not to mention the added tragedy of missing being saved by Ellie by apparent minutes. I even remember thinking "you jumped out of there fast, Ellie! Not gonna wait around for an hour or two to see if any signals come back??" To be fair, it matched how fast Isaac slams the door in her face when she's getting gassed though 😂
Great review!!! Dead Space Mobile 2011 is worth a look at in my opinion it ties DS1 and DS2 together very well being a sequel/prequel and is a good 3rd person shooter that stays faithful to its console counterparts
As a longtime fan of Dead Space 3, as well as the whole series, it's refreshing to hear someone not talk about how it's just a complete train wreck. Yes it has problems, no it's not anywhere near as scary as the first two, but man, the lore, the world, and gameplay are so fun. Thanks for actually being objective and talking about both the good and bad with this game. You're awesome
I must say, after playing all 3, im really loving the 3rd instalment, while it is certainly "different" i think the changes where positive! Very informative and a brilliant review!
Dead space is one of my favorite series next to halo. Even with just a few games in its arsenal (triple A) there’s a vast amount of lore, comics, side games movies that really piece together the bleak world that is dead space. 3 may not have been perfect in some ways but I still think it’s goated. Still scarier than other games these days.
I fuckin love your voice. Especially when you say "Retrospective" at the conclusion of your videos. Hits the nail on the head when it comes to that chill, cool guy vibe.
Finally~ I've been waiting for this. My DS3 experience is the same with RE6. Lost interest in the game after 1-3 hours because the game just felt off and doesnt quite feel right. I've not touched either titles since. I'm glad your retrospective shed some light and gave many good points for the final sequel. It's sad that the proposed 4th game never got any traction. Visceral promised they would return to the roots of what made Dead Space what it is in an open world setting with Ellie was the protagonist.
Another fantastic Dead Space video! I started 3 after adoring 1 and 2 and played for a few hours then was unsure. I got distracted and didn't return to it for a few months. I found my enjoyment was start stop and that the difficulty was extreme in places. I completed 1 on impossible and 2 on Zealot on my first run. I had what felt like wave after wave of necromorphs coming for me and ever dwindling resources. After a lot of swearing, near crying and headaches I completed it to find I had accidentally played on hard mode. I am a silly man.
Dead Space 3 was given to me as my first DS game and I loved it since I had not experience the other 2 games. If you never experienced DS 1 and 2 before then 3 is a great game. I still love it after beating 1 and 2 since I understand what game it is
Man, I missed The “Dead Space” Series. It was basically the “Golden Age” of Horror Game back then. And now a many company just made cheap made horror game as a cash grab, instead of leaving scare factor to the person who is playing it. And what they Witnessed. Of course some small dev made amazing horror game with the amount of effort put in to it with some much idea. Instead of making it for the money. And that I’ve just named myself “Deadspacemike” because of how the game feels in it. And some much it has in it. I just wished another good game company could pickup and revive the series to fix and finished the story for the “Dead Space” Fans and other fans of Horror. 😕🙂
Dead space is one of the best horror games ever made but to say it was "Golden age" is bit far fetched as that belongs to the PS2 generation. Games like silent hill, fatal frame, Clocktower, kuon, obscure, forbidden siren easily make it the best generation for horror games.
@@kingsleysummers1410 Ditto, golden age is overreach, this was exactly when horror games started to slide more and more towards action than survival horror. I would argue this was actually a really bad era for horror games since Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Dead Space all started to become more action oriented and over the top. It wouldn't be for a couple a years for this direction to stop once games like Amnesia and Slender started to change horror trends again, for better or worse is up to you.
@@kingsleysummers1410 Exactly, the fuck is this guy smoking? 360 era "Golden Age of Horror", hah! Jesus fuck it was really dry in terms of horror. Lets see...Dead space games and Condemned....That's it.
What I did for weapons in 3 was just combine my usual arsenal of 4 weapons from DS2 into 2 weapons in DS3. So, in DS2 I fancied a loadout comprised of the plasma cutter, pulse rifle, force gun, and seeker rifle. In DS3 once I had enough blueprints and materials, I crafted a hybrid SMG+plasma cutter for medium range battles, while my other gun was a Seeker rifle with an underbarrel force gun for long range engagements and crowd control. I like DS3 but for noticeably different reasons that I liked 1 and 2.
I seen the entire trilogy can be played on Xbox Game Pass, might have to revisit the first and finally get around to playing the sequels after watching this retrospective. Bless you, sir, these are always a joy to watch.
This was the main game I felt was really about survival. When ur ship crashes and for the first time ur suit is damaged and you see just how valuable it is and how many times it’s saved you so far. Plus I got to play it in co op with my buddy and the first time carver starts tripping his reaction was priceless haha
My experience of this series was literally only this game. I'd never had the correct system before. A friend of mine grabbed DS3 for us to play, as he was a big fan of the first two. He ended up not telling me anything about the world going in so I will say that I was very confused the whole time although I was very intrigued. I also played a player 2, and neither of us had any idea that the player 2 character was essentially hallucinating the entire time and I was commenting on things on screen that he was not seeing, and his character was occasionally talking with other teammates that I was not privy to their conversation. It was a really fun mechanic since we weren't expecting it. I think if you went into this game looking for a spooky co-op it was a good time, but I can see how long time fans could be disappointed with the direction it took.
I kinda liked the coop but it had so little impact on the story, it might not even be there. Unlike RE5 and 6, those coops were part of the story. Here, the story is basically the same solo or not and they had to account for if you aren't play with anyone.
I keep seeing the theory thrown around that the ending to awakened was actually more hallucinations based on the way the screen fades compared to other fades with hallucinations in the series. Though, I guess that could be reaching, given everything else going on in the DLC. Naturally people would want to hope for something like that, but I guess it doesn't matter with Visceral being dead. Great series retrospective. Haven't watched your other stuff, but this all made me subscribe, so I'll probably go back and watch older stuff at some point.
Your a lucky man as you went through the survival horror depression with a series with just RE. People like me who were there for the start of dead space had to go through it again with dead space. We had hope after RE burned us so bad only for it to crap the bed pretty fast and it legit killed the series for a while which now they are rebooting. Lets hope they learned their lesson.
Started watching this retrospective series a few days ago. Wasn’t expecting another one to come out on my birthday. Still haven’t finished this game. Will the Dead Space Retrospective cover the books? I think Dead Space Martyr is a great story that warrants its own video. Cheers.
I will say this. If you do play coop with someone from start to finish it somewhat fleshes out carver's story as there are organic situations where Carver begins to succumb to the markers influence. For example I played with my cousin and there was this audio file for me (isaac) it was screams and maddening cackles for damn near 10 minutes...I asked my cousin what he was doing why are you listening to this...he said it's my (carver's) wife...with no idea it was coming it was pretty sweet but I do agree that other than their own dead space touches the coop was tacked on for the time period
Honestly, as a character, I couldn't stand Carver; though I do admit the side missions with him weren't too bad. Especially the ones where he see's the area differently to Isaac in as few of them. Didn't care for the copy/paste of DS2's final boss though.
If they were so dead-set on having a co-op character, why wasn't it Ellie Langford? We could have had heard her fighting alongside Issac while wearing her own RIG suit. The second game had already established her as tough and capable of taking on Necromorphs. This also would've helped bypass the garbage love-triangle subplot. And the cleavage outfit.
Loved it! A-lot of Carver's backstory is given to the player playing him on multiplayer only. He sees the enviroments differently than Issac does. Which is kind of dumb. I liked him as a character!
Amazing in-depth analysis. Every single point was carefully fleshed out (hehe) and I found myself interested in every damn word you said. Conveying so much information can often be boring, even for a topic I love like DeadSpace.. but you kept me in it wholeheartedly the entire time! I’ve watched every video to its entirety and I’ve loved the journey culminating to this finale. I’d love to see more of these! Maybe not horror.. but I’d love to see your retrospective on Mass Effect since it suffered the same fate with EA, while also still being damn good games. Hope to see much more soon, man! Much love!
Absolutely loved the retrospective on one of my most beloved game series. It's sad to see that Visceral is gone, but the legacy of Dead Space certainly lives on. As for another series: Lost Planet is a relatively niche series that had some very interesting identity changes throughout its 3 installments. I personally found the first to be the most enjoyable, but it could certainly be worth looking into as well.
Even though the game wasn't perfect I really enjoyed the visual design throughout the game. The multiplayer really caught me off guard too; having a different experience on my screen and freaking out to my friend was such a unique aspect. Also the weapons system was really fun and I wish I could see something like it in another game.
I don't know, feels a little disingenuous saying Dead Space failed because of corporate meddling when the devs had full control of everything with Dead Space 2 and even had an insane marketing campaign like you discussed to back them up. The game flopping isn't anyone's fault. Personally I think the series died because survival horror fanbases have a tendency to eat themselves. A common complaint going around was "it's not scary" as if to say that's a be all end all point of criticism which honestly kills a lot of horror games regardless of their quality. RE has only survived because they changed the formula almost immediately back then and the games are all different from one another.
There are multiple factors as to why the franchise got put on ice but given that EA has a history of meddling with games to the point of annoyance you can see how Dead Space 3 was the coffin with the added nail. Granted that EA didn't see a lot of profit from Dead Space but again this was on them investing too much money to make it and market it. So basically EA needs a better management
I look forward to these videos every week and have seriously loved every video since the resident evil videos. thank you for making my nights better. you nailed this video
I came for i binge watch as i often do to catch up on the last six months.i subbed a few years just before the RE2 remake and it's great to see you get some traction and steadily grow as it shows there is people who like long form videos. So well done and hope your keeping well and continue to grow
28:20 There actually is a weapon part that is available pretty early (a telemetry spike if I recall correctly) and lets you build decent weapons (javelin gun variants), but it's hidden so far out of the way in a 0G sequence that it's highly unlikely someone would ever find it in their 1st playthrough.
I didn't play 1&2 so I was able to go into this game with no expectations and a standard to hold it to and I had a blast with it, went in wanting two things Space & visceral Sci-fi horror fun and it delivered for me. I liked that they opened it up more for exploration, i love its 80s Sci-fi influences it's just missing a haunting retro synth score and I absolutely love the neons of the tech, it's my favorite touch of the game. I did a second play through after the news of the remake and I love it even more and I never gave a shit about the story, I was just along for the ride lol I gave into the micro transactions in my second play through just to have more of its content and get more out of its gameplay. I'm sure core fans have valid reasons why they don't like it but if you love 80s Sci fi horror like the The Thing & Aliens and just go into it wanting to shoot zombie aliens you'll find that it's underrated on its own, if 3 was the first installment of the franchise I think more people would love it, it also looks awesome on the One X
Played this game about three times and i think it is great. The series starts out as science fiction and by DEAD SPACE 3, reveals that it is rather a cosmic horror game. A genre barely scene in cinema. Dead Space 3 explores some concepts like the Great Filter ( The reason humans never made contact with any other worlds is probably because everything out there may already have been consumed by the brethren moon and or consumes worlds that have achieved advanced form of sentience) and other ideas in cosmic horror such as the fear of the unknown, where characters happen to be mere cogs in the grander scheme of cold, very calculating humanly indescribable beings. Sometimes, i'm envious of the writing. its pretty good.
I remember when me and my buddy played this I instantly went for the minigun as soon as I could and found out ammo pickups scaled based on how big your guns magazine was and just never used any other weapon after that.
Can I humbly suggest Bioshock as a Retrospective? The world building/lore, horror background, mass appeal and limited games would make for a really fun deep dive! A man chooses...?

For the multiplayer at 40:35, whoever is playing as Carver will experience hallucinations. They'll see things that whoever is playing as Isaac can't see. I feel like this is a detail you'd enjoy checking on if you ever go back!
I do kinda wish they’d just committed to the RE5/6 approach and had an AI companion the entire campaign. Giving you the choice of playing Carver or Isaac.
Cause for people like me, who didn’t have anyone in my friend group who were fans of the series, you never got to experience Carver’s side. Or any of the co-op missions for that matter.
yeah, was kinda surprised he never mentioned it.
Should have been Ellie Langford.

DS3 is really good in terms of lore and expanding the DS universe, I really love the whole SCAF story as well as the Alien’s backstory.
I can agree with that.
That's one of the things it got right story-wise.
The love-triangle plot reeked of a lazy attempt for drama.
I would've settled for Isaac and Ellie trying to reconnect while embarking on their mission.

The thing about this review. Having years of listening to others poop on this title gives it low expectations that are easily surpassed. This isn't an unplayable game, its not even bad, it just falls short of what the franchise was or could have been.
It's a very good game but disappointing as a Dead Space game
This game was one of the few i hated and i will hate forever: it broke the fourth wall since i said "hello dude", fuck me.
Dead Space 3 is basically Resident Evil 5, a "bad" game compared to its previous counterparts, but a fun ass co-op game
@Z390
Setting was interesting though.
Just wish Chris and Sheva were seperate campaigns or something.
@Z390 Agree. RE5 is actually an incredibly fun time. People were just assholes and didn't equip the AI with anything decent and then wondered why they weren't helping. And obviously because you play as Chris by default, everyone essentially shat on Sheva and blamed re5 on HER.
Dead Space 3 > Resident Evil 5
Even co op I had to be shit faced to beat this one
I really loved that Carter would see things that Isaac couldn't. It was an awesome mechanic and was so cool the first time me and a friend played. It was so trippy playing as Isaac as he was saying there was stuff in front of him that I couldn't see.
My ex and I used to have dates on Dead Space 3 when she had to move to another city for a while we'd see each other on the weekends but it was nice to sit looking at the beautiful landscapes and talk about our day. It might not be a perfect game but I'll always think fondly of it

@@tiredfailure8771 Fallout 4?
@@Abbot_ hahahahahahahahahahha
The best part of this game is the weapon customization.
The bad part Is that damn giant spider boss bug.

Yeah and it was the best
I would say Carver looks like a rejected member of the TMNT.

I am really curious about what happened to Lexine after the Severed DLC, since she is the only person completely immune to the Markers. It would've been cool for her to meet Isaac at some point.
She probably died after being ejected into space after Weller died again her.
Yes I mean in an escape pod thing
There were theories Lexine kept herself hidden before her child is born. There was an opportunity for a team up crossing path with Issac for Dead Space 4. However when Visceral's development with Battlefield: Hardline didn't do well in the sellings, E.A. chopped the company out of it's line. The opportunity was loss.

Plus I got to play it in co op with my buddy and the first time carver starts tripping his reaction was priceless haha
"I've been looking forward to this"
My experience of this series was literally only this game.
I'll give them props on trying to work it in but I still didn't need it.
Eh? You clearly didnt do the coop in this game, you absolute liar. The two playable characters have DIFFERENT hallucinations
Well you gotta do the Dead Space Remake and The Callisto Protocol so see how they compare to each other and to Dead Space OG.
Cant wait to sit down and watch this Jared!
The moral of Dead Space's story *'Trust No One.'*
Cheers.
Happy Birthday !
Yo, happy birthday
I completely agree with you, also Happy (belated) Birthday!!! 😂🎂 🍰
@@lucascoval828 But alas, EA will be EA.
@@Sinjito
Unfortunately.
Hence the Carver character.
Damn, there could have been so many other directions to go.
I always sort of saw carver as the James Vega of Deadspace. You either like him or you don't but he's mostly there to appeal to new players.
@@johngun7418
He's not terrible but just came out of nowhere.
Loved it! A-lot of Carver's backstory is given to the player playing him on multiplayer only. He sees the enviroments differently than Issac does. Which is kind of dumb. I liked him as a character!
The Evil Within Retrospective when??
Amazing in-depth analysis. Every single point was carefully fleshed out (hehe) and I found myself interested in every damn word you said. Conveying so much information can often be boring, even for a topic I love like DeadSpace.. but you kept me in it wholeheartedly the entire time! I’ve watched every video to its entirety and I’ve loved the journey culminating to this finale. I’d love to see more of these! Maybe not horror.. but I’d love to see your retrospective on Mass Effect since it suffered the same fate with EA, while also still being damn good games. Hope to see much more soon, man! Much love!
I appreciate the hell out of those kind words. I do tend to drone on and on. So it's nice hearing that's not the case here.
Cheers!!
Could a Deus Ex retrospective be possible in the near future?
Yes, i think that's very much possible.
We need a next gen patch for Mankind Divided. I can't play it at 30 fps anymore after playing Demon Souls and Hitman 3.
Any chance you could do the alien and predator games. I would be happy with just Alien Isolation, but I would love your take on that universe.
Maybe one of these days
Even though the game wasn't perfect I really enjoyed the visual design throughout the game. The
multiplayer really caught me off guard too; having a different experience on my screen and freaking out to my friend was such a unique aspect.
I look forward to these videos every week and have seriously loved every video since the resident evil videos. thank you for making my nights better. you nailed this video
take a shot every time i said “video”
I still think the dead space 3 dlc is just not cannon
I am so glad I found this channel, you do awesome work, and now it’s time to binge watch all of your videos
Ironically, at launch nobody liked the game... expect for me. For some reason this is my favorite game in the series!
I came for i binge watch as i often do to catch up on the last six months.i subbed a few years just before the RE2 remake and it's great to see you get some traction and steadily grow as it shows there is people who like long form videos. So well done and hope your keeping well and continue to grow
The Resident Evil 6 of the franchise, awful in so many ways but still a lot of fun
I would argue it's better since it doesn't have anime cops.
Re6 is a fun game. The reason why people disliked it was going into it thinking it's a horror game.
Absolutely.
I kinda disagree, I’d call it the resident evil 5 cuz it was still pretty good but super different
@@littlebadassgaming I hated the store system tho lol. Re5 and re4 weapon upgrade I miss
Jared, you rock! One of my favorite reviewers on youtube and definitely my go to guy for horror.
Took you forever to get there with all those spinoff game in the way! I had forgotten I was waiting for this review.
Thanks for covering my favorite horror game series I've been since I saw your RE retrospectives and I'm excited for the future 😁. Best of luck!
