- Eric Velasquez earned his BFA from the School of Visual Arts and has illustrated over 30 children’s books. She Was The First! The Trailblazing Life of Shirley Chisholm by Katheryn Russell Brown won the 2021 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literature for Children; Best Books, Kirkus Reviews; Best Multicultural Books, Center for the Study of Multicultural Children's Books; NAACP Image Award Winner, NAACP, 2021 Rise: A Feminist Book Project List, American Library Association (ALA). Velasquez’s illustrations were featured in KMA’s exhibition, Storied City: New York in Picture Book Art, 2011.
