I've never been a fan of men's pro ball. Until Caitlin came on the scene I was a huge fan of men's basketball. I quit watching the men altogether 2 years ago. Caitlin has shown us how the game should be played. Now I would like to see the women clean up the physicality and the poor inside play where they consistently throw up bricks. Also I've never been a fan of the Dunk, but I'm 75 years old and remember a completely different game than what it has morphed into today.❤

Fans don't want to see nothing but 3s, they to see actual basketball with fundamentals.
But I think I agree with what Shaq was trying to say to Angel Reese, the WNBA could use a little flash in their games.
I mean history has shown that teams like the Showtime Lakers or players like Allen Iverson that brought a street ball style to the NBA would benefit the game as far as ticket sales and viewership.

Too much of a good thing is bad. If most of the WNBA players started mostly shooting 3's it too would get boring. Caitlin and Steph can do it because they are different. Take golf, if every pro birdied every shot - who would care any more. I believe CC's avg 3 pt shooting distance is further than any NBA player's. Make the 3's harder so they are not so routine.

The uptick in 3 point shots attempted and mostly misses is one factor. The mid-range jumper is a lost art. Post play is rare. Attacking the basket to specifically help draw fouls on set plays is even rarer.
The One and Done rule has destroyed college basketball dynasties built by coaches over their tenure. Most players younger than 22 ride the pine when they could have developed their game better by staying in school. The G League isn't that great of a substitute.
A coaches selling point to players and their parents was the graduation rate of players on their team. Senior night was something to look forward to. Not anymore.
Until the 1 and Done rule is rescinded. The college and NBA game will continue to be a shadow of their former selves. The game is still the game in the sense that fans want their team to win. It's just not the same as it once was, to the detriment of our children.

I’ve watched many NBA games, on league pass, this season.
A lot of games have looked the same regardless of the team playing.
Fast offensive turn around from good defensive play. Only to come to a screeching halt at the three point line, then a game of hot potato around the three point line.
The amount of time I spent muttering ‘somebody make a play/ shoot the ball’ frustrates me.

  • @mikehall4517
    @mikehall4517 17 дней назад +3

Well, I'm not qualified to answer your question because before Caitlin I didn't do sports, any sports. I can tell you that it was seeing highlights of her logo 3's that got me interested in watching her. It was only after she was forced into maximizing her passing game that I learned to value that aspect even over her 3's. I can point out that Caitlin's average distance that she takes her shots is 28'-9" Which is beyond the men's 3 point line of 23'-9" So that might explain the fascination of her style of 3 pointers. Her passing for inside points, or passing to other players making 3 pointers could explain the rest of the liking of 3 point shots in the wnba. I've tried watching NBA games and I agree, there is something simplistic about the men's game. Running to the 3 point line and launching a three,,with no finesse about getting there, or even worse imo is dunking. Dunking is for donuts. And then doing pullups from the rim is just silly.

I think the NBA lost its balance of showmanship in the game. No more monster dunks (Shaq, Dawkins, etc), acrobatic plays (Irving, Cooper, Jordan, Wilkins), AND the finesse of players (Gervin, Wilkes, Bird, Kareem); to balance the long range shooters. The overall intensity and entertainment of plays aren’t as exciting.
With the W, it’s exciting right now to see logo 3s, thread the needle passes, and fast pace games, because it’s fairly recent AND there’s nothing else…no monsters dunks or acrobatic plays. No one in the W is breaking the glass down on a dunk. Let one W player resembles Kareem’s skyhook or Gervin’s finger rolls OR posterize dunk, watch viewership break 2024 season😅

I still watch some men’s bball but I have enjoyed the women’s game more for ten plus years now. A few factors:
One is the behavior of the athletes. Women generally don’t complain as much and generally compete in a better way. Men are a bit more selfish. Another is the flow of the game and teamwork. The men have such crazy athleticism, one super man can break up and deny a well set up ‘set’. In the women’s game, a good coach, with a good scheme, and great teamwork works, and in fact is necessary. Ball movement, positioning, and fine skills including footwork, passing, and shooting are much more emphasized in the women’s game. I enjoy seeing teamwork in team sports. We have other sports for people to display individual athleticism and I enjoy those sports as well, for what they offer.

I understand a lot of the top players are are not playing for minor physical reasons. Another reason the NBA has made regarding physical contact is the near elimination of handchecking, which allows us to use hands more freely to disrupt offensive players on the perimeter, leading to a much more open style to play with less physical contact overall

I attended Univ. of Houston and played in the Basketball Band, so I saw ALL the home games (including vs UCLA in the Astrodome), starting in the Elvin Hayes Era through Phi Slama Jamma Era. Their style of play (Guy Lewis!) was ALWAYS exciting and up tempo whenever possible, but it was never only one dimensional. They exploited whatever the defense presented and never looked back. The games were almost always sold out, so the crowds MUST have loved their style of play. I think the difference between those college teams and the Pro teams is that the college players have something to gain by playing well and doing their best, like school honor, draftability, etc., whereas the pros have guaranteed contracts, money in the bank, and are secure in their own eyes. They appear to not give 'it all'.

People keep trying to make this a one-way argument about Clark. It's not just the 3-point shots that pull people to Clark. It's that she is an ALL-AROUND PLAYER! If you had to narrow it down to one thing it would be her INTELLIGENCE. People like intelligence. Clark can 1) Shoot 3s, 2) Drive to the hole, 3) make electrifying cross court passes, 4) organize an offence, 5) outrun entire defenses, 5) purposely create mismatches, 6) create steals, 7) block shots, 8) perform to get the crowd hyped, 9) show up with energy for EVERY game, 10) speak to the media with intelligence and poise and never throw anyone under the bus, whether they be on her team or not, even though no one would blame her if she did; she makes it difficult to not like her.
When you look at the great players, they gave this type of energy. Jordan, Bird, Kobe, Curry. These are people who possess a high IQ and are/were leaders. Everyone is not a leader. The NBA is lacking that right now. There are a whole bunch of followers pretending to be alpha males that don't possess the IQ to make the game exciting. They are simply doing what everyone else does in an attempt to gain success. Don't worry, the same will happen in the WNBA. It's a cycle.

This was one of Shaq’s key points on Angel Reese’s show - it’s exciting when CC shoots the 3 pointers because it’s unusual in the WNBA. If everyone could do it, or tries to do it, it would become mundane. That’s also why he was advocating for lowering the net a bit in the WNBA, so that we could see women dunking the ball, like the NBA where it’s commonplace. The point is that we want to see play that’s extraordinary for the league; when the extraordinary becomes ordinary, it’s boring to watch.

Not a good double standard. It's the inconsistentancy in officiating that is the problem. A good official will allow a certain amount of banging down low but call fouls when a player gains a significant advantage when the ball is strong side (loosely translated when the ball is on the same side as where the banging is occurring).
Also a problem: Flopping. This problem is solved in the long term where the league reviews certain plays that are flagged for further review. In other words, flopping may win you a ballgame but the league can assess players technical fouls post-game. These Flop-techs should be penalized in a category all their own:
*Pllayer accumulates personal Flop-techs which have ascending penalties*
    a) First 2 = Fine + free throws awarded to same team next time they play
    b) #3 & 4 = Fine + free throws awarded to next oppenent + to same team next time they play. If the next opponent is also same team then awarded free throws are doubled.
    c) #5 = Automatic ONE-game suspension + fine + free throws awarded to next oppenent + to same team next time they play. If the next opponent is also same team then awarded free throws are doubled.
    d) #6 = same penalty as (a)
    e) #7 = same penalty as (b)
    f) #8 = same penalty as (c)
    g) #9 = Automatic TWO-game suspension + fine + free throws awarded to next oppenent + to same team next time they play. If the next opponent is also same team then awarded free throws are doubled.
    h) #10 = Automatic season ending suspension + double free throws (same as above); if next opponent is same team them free throws are quadrupled.

Yeah, I think the issue in the men's game is that the SHEER NUMBER of 3's is increasing significantly. Personally, I think the "sweet spot" is a balance. I, myself, do appreciate some "physicality" (think mid-late 90s NBA, less than the Bad Boys Pistons, but more than today's NBA). It's fun seeing people score. But if the defense becomes less and less and scoring becomes TOO EASY, the game becomes less interesting too.

While I am no regular fan of basketball, this viewer’s favorite male player to watch is Steph Curry. I also enjoyed watching Kobe Bryant way back when and I don’t even know what position he played. 🤭
So called “physicality” is in my opinion, akin to thuggery and a real turnoff whether men or women engage in it. Nimble, sly, honed skills, fast paced, generous, precise, cohesive, finesse….even swagger when deserved-this is fun to watch.

I think it's another testament to the fact that men and women are DIFFERENT from one another. Men are the warriors, the fighters, the battlers, where women are the creators... Men are the breakers, women are the makers, if you will. 😝 What I love to see in the women's game is finesse, defense - in the form of stolen balls and blocked shots - WITHOUT contact. The hustle down the court in Transition, and, if CC's playing, the full court bomb pass and the pretty layup finish. I don't mind a Lexie Hull dive onto the floor for s loose ball; I love the hustle. But the MEN can jostle and fight and battle it out hard under the rim. As a woman myself, I'm not impressed watching women show me how masculine they can be. Women in basketball (college and WNBA) are even jumping up and bumping chests together to celebrate a good play. Really, ladies?!

I prefer womans tennis because you get more chance of seeing a rally. The men is all about the power of the first serve. Skillful and strong, but not as entertaining as seeing a few rallies. As far as basketball goes, maybe it's "too easy" for men to score 3's now. What is the average height of an NBA team? And what is the height of the basket? Compare that to the female game, and it's likely that it's more exciting to see the women do it because it "takes more skill" to be as consistent as CC was last season. And there are fewer women doing it, certainly as consistently as Caitlin. This makes it exciting and not boring. It's just good to see all parts of the game and the court utilised. Just like in the female tennis game. I guess it's just as you said, @Adrienne, you could say that there is more finesse in the womens game.

CC shooting logo 3s is impressive because of her form, distance and her ability to do it off the dribble, similar to Curry. The men's game is too 3-point centric and there is no longer skilled post play. In the NBA even 7.4 Wembayama does not play the post.
There is no different standard for women because:
    1. Most women in the W still don't shoot a true jump shot. Still shoot set shot (unlike CC), and not off dribble
    2. women in W don't play at the rim, let alone above the rim
    3. women in the W for the most part, lack in skill at the POST positions. Too many missed layups and lack of ability to play at the rim. This will change when more athletic girls join the league and training methods for female ballers change. The is no reason for female ballers not being able to jump like female volleyball players.
    4. Playing the post is not just about physically, except for physical specimens like Shaq. Hakeem Alajuwon is what I refer to when thinking of post players. Spin moves in the paint. Putting ball on floor followed by fade away jumper in the paint. Putting ball on floor, spin move, drop step, dunk in traffic. Those skills are just not available in the W.

I think it is more about personality. I am aware of names in the NBA, but I have not been drawn into watching it as I have been drawn into the WNBA because of the name, ie personality, of Caitlin Clark. Once here I have been starting to enjoy other names in the WNBA. Just has not happened with the NBA. I have a long history of rooting for a player, not a team. Whether it be baseball, football, basketball, or even MMA. I am more focused on single players, and as far as I can tell, right now, the NBA does not have that fire player. At least I have not been drawn to one to want to watch the games they are in.

The double standard (unfair difference) that I believe exists is the 22-year old age restriction to the USA born players in the WNBA that I argue only exists because of the "physicality" or "dirty play" previously promoted and currently still allowed in the WNBA. If the WNBA was simply a "professional" version of college basketball available to 19+ year olds (as per the males) without the current "physicality" then I believe the growth of the professional game for females would overtake the NBA. But what do I know?

the WNBA has a more rounded game despite the physicality there is more game in the paint with very few women shooting 3 pointers. So, it seems more men are shooting 3 pointers reducing the gameplay in the paint that makes it more interesting. I am not a basketball expert ok my observations.

I think Shak is incorrect. First, NBA has the cameras to close to the players. I personally like seeing the entire court, so I can see all the players on the court not just the players who has the ball. Imao if a team is shooting a lot of 3’s and making them, then the players on other team needs to improve the defense. I like watching players that play as a team and pass the ball around.
Being able to watch the great defense on a team is just as exciting as watching baskets being made. I get tire of seeing “the bigs” dunking the ball. Big deal. You’re taller than everyone else, so you dunk the ball. We want to see games where the player have great plays and it’s competitive. The WNBA coverage is better. You can see the entire court and see the great defense and the offense having to work interesting plays to put the ball in the basket in the paint or outside shots. If you can’t visually be stimulated by the game why watch? 🌺🌺

Raise the basket a bit so the men have to work as hard as the women. It’s no fun to watch tall men dunk when everyone on the court is 6’6”+! The women play with finesse, and watching CC thread those passes like she does because nobody in the W can dunk, the extra effort the ladies have to make produces a better product. I’ve never watched a W game until this year, but since CC came into the picture, WOW! I can’t wait for the 2025 season! GO FEVER🎉🎉🎉

The other thing the NBA is missing is a new generational player to create a focal point for the sport, focus the competition, forge dynasties. Lebron and Curry were those players and watching them compete together for Olympic gold was like must see tv because it was crowning achievement for their storied careers. Now they are in their sunset years as stars. We’re just waiting for them to decline and retire. In comes CC into this void. SHE is the generational player we’ve been waiting for. So quite frankly it’s the women’s turn now.

As a teen and into m 20's, I was a big Celtics fan. After Bird and Magic, I followed college ball. One and done turned college ball into semi-pro basketball, so I quit watching. It wasn't util Kim Mulkey was hired at LSU, Kenny Brooks brought VA Tech to prominence, and Caitlin Clark started playing for Iowa, did I start watching wbb games.
Today's college wbb games remind me of mbb from back in the 60's and 70's. Good athletes, but slow enough for fans to see and appreciate what is happening on the floor. I have no interest in watching 2 teams of freaks compete.

3pt is not a problem. Problem is too many faul calls & refs who fix games way too often. Also, they has take out defence. That is also big problem but it goes with too many faul calls. Then there is that LeBalco what league still promote like crazy, everyone hate him and his stat padding & fake GOAT debate. It also helps if refs start to call travels, carry and offencive fouls. Sometimes LeBalco do all three in same posession and there is faul call on defence if they dare to stay close to him. Its ridiculous.
But first what they should fix is refs, unfortunately Silver want refs do what they do so that will not change. More and more people understand that games are not fair and nobody want to watch fixed games.
Another thing what is easy to fix is tanking, half of the league try to lose on purpose. What kind sport does that? Oh yes, NBA. Put every team same odds for draft and then nobody need to tank and games are more competitive.

The main thing is we want VARIETY. When Jordan came with the high flying dunks that was DIFFERENT because NBA was only about the post. Then everyone started playing like Jordan and ratings dipped. So when acurry came thst was different. But now every team is playing like the warriors.
Caitlin Clark is DIFFERENT from the typical WNBA style of play. If EVERY player were like her ratings would go up at first and then suffer

I am a daily Sports bettor and as such I can watch the NFL, NBA, NHL, Men's NCAA Football and Men's & Women's Basketball, Golf, Boxing, Volleyball, Tennis, Soccer, even Water Polo but I don't watch for entertainment. I watch them to see if my bets are going to cover the spread or hit the Moneyline. Adrienne to answer your question, NBA Basketball is a sloppy mess, from the sloppy ball handling, errant passes, turnovers, missed shots, etc... You wouldn't believe how many times I have been yelling at my TV for them to shoot a 3 pointer in order to cover the spread, and then when they shoot it, it's an Air ball, or it clangs off the rim, and I am yelling curse words and waking the neighbors up! But you are correct in your assertion that the NBA has become predicable in so far as playing a boring game. The NBA is not alone in frustrating me to no end, as all sports have players making bad decisions, but it usually just one or two teams that do it on a regular basis, whereas the NBA seems to be every game. If I weren't betting on the NBA games, I would not watch them at all.

I hate the three point shooting also by the women. It's boring. And it doesn't matter weather the shot is successful or not. even If it's in, it's boring because that team just got 3 easy points not having to make an effort through a real offence. This is exactly why the Logo 3s are exciting - because they're being shot from an amazing range. Once the range is not amazing any more, they become boring. And that's what had happen since Curry's change of the game. The 3 pt line should be moved again a little farther.

Seldom watch the NBA anymore, just a lit one playoff time. They’re great athletes and make remarkable plays, just don’t care to watch it. Too much isolation, three point shooting, and slam dunks for me. Prefer watching the WNBA (especially Caitlin), more structured offenses.

The difference between the ‘physicality’ in the nba and the wnba is the fouls.
The nba refs call the fouls so it is still skill that leads to baskets.
The wnba physicality is cheap shots and fouls. Without the refs calling the fouls, consistently for both teams, it’s frustrating to watch.

People like what they like. There is no "double standard" because males and females are not the same. I don't want to see females being "physical" particularly dirty plays in a minimum contact sport. I don't watch NBA so they can do what the fans like for that sport. I believe that It's a mistake to think the bulk of the new fans want the WNBA to copy the NBA. If there is any copying to be done it would be from the women's basketball style at college. I happen to believe that college is better than professional but I watch WNBA to watch CC. Go Iowa, Go Fever.

Load Management, Shooting too many 3's, Players and coaches spewing politics and Wokeness are the top 4 list of why the NBA is unwatchable. I stop watching around 2007 when the NBA went heavily into politics. I quit watching Nascar 2022 when Nascar was going Woke. I quit watching NFL IN 2020 when they starting putting Woke words on the field and unform. My last Olympics was 1999. Any league that is trying to divide us, I am out. I will never watch a WNBA game without CC in it. I am a 62 year old white male. I was a fan of Wilt Chamberlain, Pete Maravich and Michael Jordan. I did play against MJ twice as a Freshmen in HS. He won both. 35 and 46 points respectively. Did not realize he was that MJ until our local newspaper ran a story 10+ years later.

You need both 3 point shots and the Inside game. It's just more entertaining. The game is boring now. You can have it all, though. I want to see the game played by both men and women in the same way. The game should be played as it was in the 80s on up. Each player should have a specialty.

I think you are right about 'culture' but I think that word is way overused and maybe not applied properly. There is a very big group, and iv seen it labeled as a culture, that agree with Shaq and the WNBA needing dunks, and the NBA is great because men do dunk. Do we call that a culture belief? Is it a culture failure?
I think people wanting to see the NBA go back to more physical, and the women to be less so is broader than 'a' culture. Which culture? White? Black? Western? Liberal Lesbian Black Women's?
Going down this rabbit hole with you. Do you think generally that men and women may have a different meaning or understanding of 'banging down low'?
great topic, i think you should go deeper into it.
