One thing I really love and appreciate with your videos/approach is that after teaching a good number of years now, your enthusiasm, focus, and creativity is still second to none! Thanks for posting this!
Can hear the groove juice drip out the headphones. Your audience hangs on to every word. I'm jealous of people learning the drums in 2021 with content like yours.
Totally. I love playing the drums so far (started about 5 months ago), but it’s easy to get discouraged and start to step away sometimes. The Mikeslessons’s courses and his teaching manner have really helped me to stick to it and enjoy it all
The mis-hit on the cowbell followed by the word ‘hello’ is witty! As always, a lifetime’s learning distilled in a bite size piece. For video content it doesn’t get better than this.😀
Not only is this lesson taught SUPER well, but also your lighting is getting even better! Love the production and quality behind your content. Inspires me to go make some more videos!
Mike ,one of my favorite practice days recently was playing the three side of the son and rumba clave patterns on the bass drum and adding Elvin's 'e' of 3 [on the bass drum] with 2-3 and 3-2 right hand cascara ;a lot of fun and it can sound really funky. You are my favorite internet dude.
Oh know yet another Mozambique 👌 just so happens playing Dr. Gadd’s Late in the evening. I’ll you that new groove in the adlib part at the end of the tune. Nice 👍
Great Lesson Mike! The Mike Mozambique was pretty awesome too! I always tell my drum students to experiment and have fun with songs once they get comfortable playing them the way they're performed - this is a concept I borrowed from your blueprint and house analogy.
Love the “ exploring the neighborhood” analogy. I have stumbled into some pretty fun stuff doing just that. Both on the kit and while walking or driving around . In either scenario you also discover quickly when you’ve made a turn into the wrong neighborhood. :- )
@@mikeslessons 2016 is when I first started on your world grooves and it introduced me to so many important concepts of drumming. Before that, I had no idea what I was missing. Every drummer should study the world grooves if they want to grow. It's so important to play things you'd never ordinary try. Thank you for that, Mike!
OMG!!! Yes sir. The Mozambique is the living breathing representation of my personal journey. Let's hope it never stops moving forward! Hope you're well bro!
Brilliant. It will take me about a month to get this grooving, but then I can drop it in Jazz band. I predict my director will frown at first. He’s an expert in world grooves, and he’ll question that Hihat, but maybe he’ll let me do it.
Hey Mike, I just picked up a Meinl Groove Bell and I'm having a blast with it. Any chance you could upload some cowbell-focused lessons? Thanks for everything you do. 👍😁
Sounds rad! It would be really helpful to have some explanation of the cultural context for this groove. Like what actually *is* a Mozambique? In an age where difficult conversations of cultural appropriation are being more widely embraced, I believe as drummers we all have a responsibility to develop a more thorough understanding of *where and why* these patterns came to be widely played around the world. It is easy for drumming students to find a pdf/watch a video and learn the notes of a "world" groove without having to recognize of the specific history/spirit of what we're playing. To the cultures where this music comes from, these grooves often serve a much deeper purpose than being just another tool in a versatile drummer's toolbox to show off on Instagram. Not sure if this is addressed in any of your other videos, but this is the first "world" groove video of yours I've seen. Maybe some references to recordings/readings would help these grooves start to feel more meaningful out of respect to their specific cultures of origin. Thanks for your consideration, love your drumming Mike!
Naw, you never really do anything yourself on this instrument. We are always standing on the shoulders of giants. I learned it from boos, then variations from Gadd and others, then found my own path.
I’ll say this simple & quick. U are an inspiration to us all in the drum community!!
I'll respond equally as quick... THANK YOU 🍵🍵🙏🙏

that subtle teal and orange color grade
Kinda, normal grade with a teal light behind me and the lamp is painted gold on the inside. It's like a Teal&Orange grad without any work, LOL
Fellowship of the Groove; One Groove to Rule them ALL!
The Mikezambique! Always fun and inspiring. These kinda grooves are so fun all by themself, even without music!

@@mikeslessons Another question, if I may, haha. What lav mic are you using for the spoken audio? Thanks, Mike!
Hey coach Mike I’m in Mozambique right now and I have learned some Mozambican Rhythms
Teach them the Mike Johnston way, make a video on that and post it here!:)
Great!! THANK YOU for the inspiration Mr Johnston!!

Love it, Mike! The toms sound soo good in this pattern. Nice touch..
Love the New Talking place!
I love that sounds of the snaredrum

👍🥁 thanks Mike! Never been better.
Love the Moza..just so fun. sounds nice & warm on your kit
Yes I remember hearing you do this in a live lesson or something similar and I wanted to learn it! Awsome.
And here it is my friend! :)
Love you man. Also love the podcast!!!
That hotel analogy was great. Its obvious you have traveled to some "sketchy" places.
As a former touring drummer and as a current traveling clinician it's safe to say... YES I HAVE. LOL :)
kit sounds great dude! great lesson too

"so if put it all together without the crazy orchestrations"
then Mike drums with crazy orchestration
Beautiful groove Mike!
Thank you Mike for another great video is always happy New Year and God bless
Love the Mozambique. First time I learned this was from your World Groove pack. I still jam it to this day. I'll check this out for sure.

Thanks again Mike, I am still trying to learn the traditional Samba from a lesson on your site. Maybe one day I will get this down too 😂
Take your time with this stuff. The Samba was 2-3 years of my life, just so that I could scratch the surface.
It's kinda like the Gadd Mozambique & the Sympathy ..Stones tune
BRO SO GOOD!!!!
Thanks homie! All good in your world? Miss ya bro.

What kit do you have? I’m kinda starting to look into getting a new drum kit and trying to decide what I want
This is a 1965 Gretsch Round Badge in Progressive Jazz configuration. The modern version of this would be a Gretsch USA Custom in 20, 12, 14 :)
@@mikeslessons thank you! Your videos are outstanding btw, one of my favorite instructors online!
Simple but difficult 🥁🤙🤟
Great lesson THX! One question, what drumheads are you using, the kit sounds awesome!
Thanks a ton my friend. I'm using Aquarian Single Ply Coated on tops and bottom of the toms and on the snare. Hope that helps
one day we will be on mars watching this trying to groove in space.
Straight from Scandinavia? You mean IKEA 😅
LOL! I wish. That would have been a lot cheaper than the monstrosity that I got 😂😂😂
If you drank some Earl Grey ( which is not bad actually ) instead of that green stuff, the Picard desk would make more sense to you 😂
"Earl Grey... Hot" :)
