- In 2014 Canada's Northwest Territories had one of its driest summers of recent history. Three-hundred and eighty-five fires burned over 3.3 million hectares of forest. Forest Fire Fighters from across Canada and Alaska were called in for support. In July 2014, Ontario sent its first Fire Rangers. Crew 2218 from Sudbury, Ontario was assigned to fire ZF-017. The fire was approximately 100 km northwest of Yellowknife and covered over 250,000 hectares when the Fire Rangers first got to its flank. It would grow to over 500,000 hectares.
