I didn’t write it about Jeffrey or Howard, my life didn’t revolve around them-although the “jealousy and envy reign, never want to see you get ahead.. “ definitely, some of it about my former best friend Jermaine Stewart (RIP 🕊️) it’s a composite of multiple experiences … and who hasn’t been stabbed on the back at some point right?! It’s such a real song 💯
I did specifically decide to write a song called “Friends” in total opposition for the fake bubble gum Shalamar song called “Friends” one of my least favorites.
This collaboration with Eric B & Rakim was a groundbreaker and this performance was 🔥🔥🔥🔥 singer/ songwriter performing LIVE dancing AND doing Rakim’s first verse was the ultimate showcase for who I am and I’m thankful to God & MCA records, my collaborators and fans for believing in me, despite those from Solar/ Shalamar who didn’t. I am an embodiment of believing in yourself and knowing your worth- don’t be afraid to step away from what doesn’t serve your best interest.

OMG! This performance is why Jody Watley is one of my all time favorites! I'm in awe how she sung (and rapped) this perfectly while fully dancing. With her beauty, style, and grace, I wanted to be her when I was a teenager in the 80's and emulated her look...and now here I am in my 40's still trying to sing and dance like Jody, lol.

Regardless... absolute KILLER performance by Jody, and as she rightly points out in a comment on here, the first time a pop + rap crossover duo hit mainstream radio and she was the one with the vision! Yes, Rakim raps it better than her (because he's the GOAT), but Jody did an amazing job taking on his part here AND mixed it in with the singing and the dancing - no lip-syncing crap. I think this was the ultimate performance showing off her incredible versatility... way to nail it, Jody! Thanks so much for posting! (just seeing this for the first time 34/35 years later)
I remember watching this back in the day... I was sad that she left Shalamar but was so happy so did her thing going solo and boy did she come out strong. Great voice live and she was always styling. I loved this album too.

On drums, one of the best drummers from Minneapolis, John "Bam Bam" Morgan! He was part of the Andre Cymone band during the Survivin' In The '80s era and also appears in Cherrelle's music video for "You Look Good To Me".

This was one of my favourite songs as a teenager (not a big hit in the UK) but I still loved it and related to the lyrics - there didn't seem to be be any other pop songs on this subject! And this performance is perfection - I'd never seen it until now - great band, great live vocal/rap, choreography on point - and the audience are loving it!! WHAT a find!
