This project started with a simple chunk of wood picked up on the side of the road and transformed into a unique hanging bandsaw box. Along the way, I discovered it was hickory and paired it with a stunning piece of Buckeye burl. Originally intended as a floor-standing art piece, it evolved into a wall-hanging design with contrasting matte and high-gloss finishes. This piece was all about letting the process lead the way and embracing unexpected moments of inspiration. It’s a bold, sculptural project that pushes the boundaries of traditional bandsaw box design.

Morning. In nearly 5 decades of woodworking, I have given away nearly everything I ever made, except for the furniture/cabinetry in my home. But, I saved my favorite piece. It's a small bandsaw box that I made freehand. No plans or drawings. I had a small chunk of spalted pecan from a tree and I let it do it's thing in the saw. It has an integral wooden hinge that is cut into the wood. I still don't know how I did it. Fools everyone who looks at it. God Bless us all. Keep dreaming. Happy Thanksgiving.

There is a huge appetite for full project builds on RUclips. They seem to have been popular a few years ago and of course the RUclips machine started making everyone do those bullshit tool comparisons/temu ordered/other nonsense, and it is such a shame. I appreciate your commitment to making the videos you want to make, because we want to see them. Nevermind what the algorithm wants, you can influence a whole Renaissance of algorithm bullshittery. Thanks David.

This project sent me on a Rollercoaster of emotion. I had no idea where this was going and I loved it. From a random log, to "just another bandsaw box", to an odd alien spaceship looking floor box, to a wall hanging box eaten by burl, to an amazing piece of art.
This blew me away dude and I love the finished piece. Keep up the great work.

Adding the burl to the box, made the box go over the top; and that’s a good thing David. Kind of reminds me of old cypress clocks that I used to make. I used cypress cut from the bottom of the tree which gave it its design and they were real popular in Florida in the 80’s. I’m going to have to get your book. All these years in wood working and I’ve never made a bandsaw box.

Wow David this was an amazing video. Was wondering what you would do with this bandsaw box the legs were a different idea. But that burl turned it into something amazingly beautiful and you adding the burl cutoffs to the bandsaw box for me sent it over the top. Such an amazing piece of art. 👏👏👏👏 keep up the great videos. As a new woodworker you are so inspiring and make me want to learn more about this craft everyday. Thank you for sharing your passion and talents.

Sometime in the past, you had a second channel. Around the time you published your first book, you published a video mentioning a one-month Non Complaining Challenge.
I’m not even sure if that video is still available. I believe the video was published in Summer 2018 or so.
But that single video changed my life for the better, in ways I couldn’t even imagine at the time.
I remember liking the simplicity of the concept. “I can certainly try that and see what happens.”
It amazed me because I was at a bad point in my life. And stopping complaining gave me so much clarity. I had an inner voice that was constantly negative. I was weighing myself down 24/7!
It also gave me a lot of agency. Responsibility for my own choices and their consequences.
I had so much mental bandwidth released! It was a huge relief. And it freed me to do more and live much better.
You mentioned your book and I remember you saying you had no way to prove anything you were saying, but you could show email exchanges between you and your wife to prove what you were saying.
I can’t prove anything to you, but this is a humble comment to say that I’ll be forever grateful for you and that video. Today’s video really sent me down memory lane. I never had the chance to say anything to you. Thanks, David! And happy Thanksgiving ❤

Oh wow, thank you! The no complaining challenge came from a book called "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind". Reading your comment just made my day and sent me down memory lane. So, thank you! ❤️

I love that piece - it’s possibly my favourite ever bandsaw box.
Patience is a virtue - especially when using the bandsaw. Unfortunately, although I’m usually quite a patient person, I often find myself forcing wood through the bandsaw much faster than I should be . . . and then having to spend time replacing the blade, making it just as long and more expensive.
I know I won’t have the patience to make a bandsaw box, although I do like them very much.
    Maybe one day . . . maybe . . . one day . . .

That turned out great, quite impressed. One of the things I do love about woodworking is how you start with an idea that may not be fully formed and seeing how it evolves into a finished piece. As a wood turner I see burls being used for projects like this and cringe because burls are perfect for turning and casting but this worked out beautifully. The pieces work together, well done.
If you don't know what to do with that burl cutout I would be more than happy to work with you to get something turned from it.

Love the contrast between the organic irregular burl cookie and the regular shape of the eyeball box, amd the two woods together. I continue to be impressed at what that little bandsaw can handle. Hickory aint no joke and the saw and blade seemed to deal with it easily. Glad I took your advise and got one for myself. Thanks for sharing!
