- In an early play, from the mid - 1960s, Mohit Chattopadhyay (1934 - 2012), the greatest Indian master of poetry in theatre, confines his players within the interior of a medieval fortress, where the Queen, the Commander of the Fortress, the Scientists, the General, the Newsman, the Councillor fight a losing battle against a resistance brewing outside its portals; a drummer herald, an artist and the Queen's Maid carrying into the fortress reverberations of the revolt outside. The ruling class plays with power, passion and intrigue in strange combinations, but has to bury their own divides and dissensions and distrust to make a safe escape from the victorious commoners, who would not let the master class auction away their orchard! The play touches on several contemporary concerns, but manages to lift them all to a poetic field, charged with highly sensitive imagery.
