+leo roberts and people with Aspergers can relate to him I even have Aspergers and when my mum told me I had it she wrote a list of people that has it to show how successful they are or have been and I already watched tbbt and she said Shelton had symptoms of Aspergers
lalaithan that is the point. My little boy struggles in the school to make friends and it is hard for teachers and other parenst to understand him. And that makes difficult for him to adapt. Ain t easy but we keep it trying with love.
I was diagnosed with Aspergers a couple of years ago. I'm a fan of the show and as I've learned more about Aspergers I've noticed obvious signs that Sheldon has it.
+Darcy Brummett I'm sorry if I'm being rude. I have a question, if you don't mind awnsering. Is it about as difficult to read scocial clues, as Sheldon descibes?
Well, each person is different. It can be easier some than it is for others. For me, I think I'm fairly good reading social clues. Another aspie might be more like Sheldon.
My nine year old son has ASD (Aspergers) and he knows how,to express emotions. In fact Sheldon reminds me of my son on so many levels. So, yes I truly believe he does have ASD. My son LOVES Sheldon! The Big Bang Theory is his favorite tv show. Remember people if you know one person with Autism, you know one person with Autism. No two are alike.
People talk about how Sheldons character and aspergers is exaggerated but it really isn't. My cousin has this and he's almost exactly like Sheldon. People have different cases and some people are a lot more severe than others. Some people just have a hard time reading others and like routine, and some are as severe or even more so than Sheldon.
I have AS and I'm 35 on the AQ test (32 is the threshold) so while I don't have severe Aspergers and I'm not bothered by sounds or textures and I don't stim, it is still there. It's a matter of degrees.
It's not 'exaggerated' as much as it's 'comedified'. You can be more severly autistic than Sheldon, but he only has it in manners and situations where it's funny to look at. And yes, that probably isn't how any real autistic person would behave.
My son is very similar to Sheldon in many ways. Everyone is affected different. There isn't a stereotypical Aspergers type. He loves this show and Young Sheldon as he actual understands his character.
I have autism. I enjoy relating to Sheldon on some points. I think it's important for viewers to remember that those who have Asperger's/High functioning Autism are all very different. We are not all out of touch with other's emotions or dislike physical contact (Sheldon seems to have challenges in that area). My greatest wish is not to read other people's minds or to understand them but for them to simply accept me for who I am without labeling me.
@@isaacwoodward2554 Sheldon do the 3 pattern door knock because one time he doesn't knock properly, he finds out about his father's affair. It's like why I always bring my phone to the toilet, because one time I didn't do it, I got locked inside the toilet for an hour unable to ask for help. It's to anticipate things that could go wrong.
I just looked up the symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome, and literally every single symptom/sign was literally Sheldon. One of the signs was having a fixation on something, and they even used trains as a example. But yeah, I definitely see Asperger's as highly likely, and it's nice for people who watch that have Aspergers to have someone representing them, and someone that they can relate to.
It is the official stance of BBT that Sheldon does not have Aspergers. However, Jim Parsons has said in many interviews that he believes the character does.
I love Jim Parsons but he also has said he never watched star trek. He's an actor and question if he means everything he blurts out in endless interviews. The producers and writes stated he doesn't. That it would be way to hard to write for a character with the syndrome.
+Shadow1995me I have aspergers too. If you pause and read all the "Vanity Cards" by Chuck Norre at the end of each show, it is clear to me he must have aspergers too.
I'm in the UK too :) I'll start watching it soon then, don't think I've ever actually seen every episode in a season (I watch it on E4 and they're really patchy)
I've always thought this since the beginning. I love that they have developed his character in this way. His friends truly understand him and though they find him difficult at times, they will always support him
The Man Being autistic doesn’t qualify you as a psychiatrist. You can’t state whether someone has autism or not just because you’re autistic. A trained person can.
People with Aspergers: He might be exaggerated but I like him! He's a lot like me! It's nice to have a character I can relate to! People without: HE DOES NOT HAVE ASPERGERS HE'S JUST VERY SILLY AND EVEN IF HE DID THAT WOULD BE SUPER OFFENSIVE TO PEOPLE THAT DO HAVE IT!!!
The Man so the writers never said he did or have never said in the show you should be angry at the person who made it if you are Angry at a fictional character (re-evaluate The your life) for that particular reason then you’re probably not very intellectually inclined
@@muhammedalikray9957 Because whoever the hell that was pretended I was immature and stupid just for hating an utterly DESPICABLE fictional character. And I know Sheldon is a babe in the woods compared to who I'm about to talk about, but it's the same fucking principal - would I be stupid for hating Voldemort as a character? I don't think so.
I used to work as a assistant to a kid with aspergers. In an essay he wrote that he wished he had an Leonard who could explain the world to him and him to the world. To me it sums upp the difficulties he was going trough. He could really relate to Sheldon and even though Sheldon is on the reciving end of the comedy he loved the show.
The first time my family and I saw Sheldon, we joked about how they finally had a TV character like me. We had never heard of Aspergers at that point. I was recently diagnosed as being on the spectrum and love this show!!
It is really upsetting how writers make up these Asperger Characters but refuse to admit it out loud, treating it as some unmentionable disease! It's about time the writers mentioned the truth and put it into writing how Sheldon has Asperger, regardless whether it's "popular" or not!
Because people with Aspergers can still socialize, it doesn't mean their incapable of having a social life. It just means it is a higher form of autism. It's is a disorder to do with the brain sensory, so every case is different depending on how the brain sensory was compromised. That's why ever person with aspergers is affected differently, you can't treat every person affected by it the same way.
+Always Learning Just because you can talk to someone does not mean it isn't difficult (e.g. what does the other person actually want you to say if they ask if they clothes looks okay: say what you think or lie and reassure them). Also socialising & talking are 2 different things especially if you don't know the person and don't have much control over the situation it can be exhausting.
Maybe they don't want to be criticised on how they are exaggerating the symptoms for tv or how they are portraying it. I guess it's much easier for them if they just don't label Sheldon as being on the autistic spectrum.
If anything it's better not to plaster the label. Those that can relate know. But they treat Sheldon like any other character, or how any other person in this world would treat him.
I thought this was going to be something canon about the show, not just a fan theory. It's a pretty solid theory, though. Also, he has said many times, "I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested." This implies that the test concluded that he's NOT crazy, but he never says what the test says that he IS. He probably conveniently leaves out the fact that the test concluded he’s autistic. Pretty sneaky, Shelly. Edit: I changed “aspergers” to autism because that’s no longer an acceptable term
I'm guessing not crazy just means that he's not mentally unstable. He was referred to a specialist which he didn't go to so they might have told him he had aspergers
He definitely has Asperger Syndrome, but it doesn't mean that he is crazy. What people define as "crazy" actually means that someone who has a mental illness with psychotic tendency, at least this is the convention among psychiatrists and psychologists. Asperger Syndrome, which is in the autistic spectrum, which is part of neurodevelopmental disorder, in itself doesn't have psychotic tendencies. There are mental illnesses with psychotic tendency, schizophrenia is one of them. These illnesses are the ones people usually define as "crazy". So, Sheldon actually doesn't lie when he says he's not crazy.
I actually relate strongly with Sheldon. He struggles the same way I do, he's fussy about things like I am and he has to have a routine like I do ... And that obsession with Super Heroes is me with Pikachu and anime in general. I lean more towards High Functioning Autism, but Aspergers and High Functioning Autism are extremely similar to each other. He's my favourite, because he gets normal people to understand how much we suffer.
+phthisicy The DSM and psychiatry is all a crock of shit. You are the one drinking koolaid dude. The DSM is the reason half of the USA thinks they need doctors and therapists to babysit their fucking emotions. That book keeps growing as more people join the psychiatry field and need more diagnoses to give to people who are perfectly fucking healthy mentally or otherwise. Are you jealous of people with Aspergers? Are you insulted to be called "neurotypical"? Or are you just a complete bonehead??
+Elizabeth Boomhower Why would one be jealous of Aspergers? It's fucking useless and a burden. Sure, one might be able to learn faster than others or is a genius in some regards, but normal people can have that too.
As a fan of the show i loved the clip you used for the lack of social skills. But as a resident doctor who has spent a fair share of time with Asperger's Syndrome and other Autism spectrum disorders patients and honestly made friends with a lot, the character of Sheldon Cooper either intentionally or unintentionally goes a long way in awareness of such disorders and more importantly the social recognition and acceptance. I am a huge fan of Jim Parsons and genuinely respect the writers and producers of Big bang theory.
I'm from Norway, and was diagnosed with asperger a couple of years back. It's kinda hard sometimes, because need things to be predictable and if that gets messed up, it's really frustrating. But thanks to support from friends and family, it's alot easier..
When I first watched the series I really couldn't stand Sheldon at all and was so annoyed by his habits and quirks. But later I realized the reason why I hated him so much was because he embodies all the things I hate about myself. And after finally coming to terms with my own problems and shortcomings, I began to like Sheldon as a character. In fact, now he is my favorite character of the show
+filip4900 I hear the word 'Mild' often said in relation to Aspergers, and I disagree with it. I wouldn't call it mild at all. Sure, there are those with a lesser and greater degree of it. It varies per person, and because of that I don't think any of us can truly rule out whether our own case of the condition is truly mild or high. We're all different as is our aspergers. :)
+TheJbhmetal I find it strange that an expert on Asperger syndrome like yourself do not see all the clear signs. OCD like behavior is one of them in some people with Aspergers.
Babers I know the signs because I have Aspergers. Aspergers and OCD are two completely different things. I have also met people with my condition and we don't act like Sheldon. How many times do I have to repeat myself to get that clear to people's minds? Oh wait this is the internet! Full of idiots like you.
The writers did not want to flat-out say he was autistic, because they didn't want to be accused of being insensitive or inaccurately portraying autism. However I think it's very obvious that he was. He said multiple times he's been tested and he's fine, but I'm waiting for the young Sheldon episode where we see that he was tested and Mary found out he was autistic and just lied to him
I have high functioning autism. I wasn't diagnosed until I was thirteen. However, I can tell when I look back on memories. It's always been hard to relate to others. Sheldon makes me smile. I understand him. I share a lot of quirks and traits with him. I can fully relate to the couch spot. I have favorite spots on multiple couches. I'm not as closed as Sheldon about. I will find somewhere else to if there's a large party. However, if someone steals my spot when there's not an event, I get upset. Often feeling like crying. I could leave rooms if my spot is taken. Sheldon's quirks make me smile and comfort me emotionally. I'm not alone.
I've self diagnosed myself with it after many months of research and talking to my parents, I follow many traits and the research I found was very helpful with explaining to my parents however they did/do not believe I have/had it. I have found the traits I know of I have related to all of my life
I was diagnosed with Aspergers when I was very young. My parents never told me that, however. I believe this worked to my benefit, as I have been able to overcome many of my deficits. Now, I am indistinguishable from someone who does not have any disability whatsoever. I received no help, instead I learned to adapt. I now am free of all identifiable symptoms that would express themselves externally. I still know that I have it, but that’s okay. (I have never met anybody with a story like this, that’s why I thought it was interesting enough to post.)
Sheldon is a male with high functioning autism, women who have the same form show it in a more mild fashion, but can be even more affected by it. I am one of those women, and I find it comforting that when I identify with someone in mainstream media t isn’t someone that I can’t look up to as a role model.
Sheldon may have aspergers but it is only mild which would explain his lack of knowledge on social interactions and also his "vulcan like hearing" basically he pays more attention and it would also explain his maturity level for Asperger people tend to develop slower socially. Besides that he is clearly a hypochondriac. He also seems to be obsessive compulsive.
No such thing as "mild" Aspergers Because everyone is affected by it differently, and copes with it differently, it seems milder, but some people with ASD or Aspergers can cope better with different elements of life than some others, and vice versa. Some are high functioning amongst high functioning, meaning that they have an easier time expressing their feelings. But feel things VERY acutely, typically, as well as having the obvious, typical, affects-all kind of symptoms. Some are non-verbal, meaning they really struggle with expressing themselves. ETC.
Mike is just the colloquially used term for it. People don't get statements as easily when they are extremely high functioning, but can still express themselves, despite still needing help, even with a definitive diagnosis.
I was recently diagnosed with Asperger´s and ADD. And I´m still learing every day to live with it. Sheldon, Amy and Lenoard´s mother has steriotypical signs on Asperger´s syndrome. But they also show how different every person with that diagnos is. I for example do understand sarcasm, but can have trouble with understanding body language. And I love hugs! I can except a sudden change, if I know that there is a possibility the will be a sudden change. But if it´s to sudden change, I will have a minor panic attack. But what´s common with all us with asperger´s, is that we have a speacial subject that we are supersmart at and will get obsessed with. I like history, photogarphy and drawing. But I suck at math, because I have never had any intrest in that, so I don´t really care. :) And to sum it up. Yes, Sheldon is not crazy, as his mother says. He has undiagnosed Asperger´s Syndrome = he is super smart in the subject he finds intresting. :)
Celisar1 It's not really a special gift, it's more that they are obsessed with that one thing (or few things) and therefore become amazing at it because they are super intelligent.
iconictvmoments That is exactly my point: most people with Asperger are not especially intelligent. But you might be right about a particular interest some might have.
I have Aspergers; I'm in a 1-year music program and my ear training teacher has more-or-less forbidden me from giving the answers to nites, intervals and chords because I've gotten so many. Also, my Intro to Improv teacher said in front of the class "Sarah is a walking, talking encyclopedia" after I started spewing out theory facts; I'm exempt from that class this semester because I took a night school music program that included theory, and graduated from the program with a 93% average.
He doesn't though. People with Aspergers don't behave like that and they don't think the way the character "Sheldon" does. If you just did google "Aspergers" you would see it too.
I think the most imporent thing here is... Sheldon has these traits but over the corse of the show he has to learn to deal with it. Sheldon isn't allowed to use his flaws as an exsuce for anything and he is shown putting effrot to become a better person. This is a lesson we ALL need to learn but all to often people who have things like this as excuse to just give up on trying to improve, but these things don't have to pin you down and controll your life. Sure people should be aware of what makes you diffrent and teach you in a way that's compatible with your learning style but you also have to do the foot work and your self and figure out how to teach yourself as well.
My best friend who has Asperger's is fun to be with sometimes and a real pain in the butt at other times. But I can't deny he makes life interesting, and I can't imagine it without him.
I'm asperger myself but thank god nobody understood it until me at 35 years old. That was good because nobody put me a label and I was forced to mitigate my autism in order to interact with neurotypicals...it was very suffering but I succesfully re-right my mental programmation in order to change priorities and attitudes. I'm not like Sheldon anymore, I'm just a bit still closed on showing feelings, but with a bit of weed the emotional part of me flows out and I gain all my remaining potential, in fact I recently reached the fully spiritual enlightenment, but the journey is just starting from here. Now i have so much more to learn in the parallel universe of the neurotypicals....
I love Sheldon, He's such an awesome character and may seem like an annoying person at first but he's actually a caring person when he tries to be. it's hard to not fall in love with him!
JustMike, good point. I have seen/read those comments...so this makes me think i'm part way right with him having narcissism....i'm more than happy to chuckle at a narcissist........... :)
if they where to say he has autism and some traits upset people or are seen as inaccurate then it's on the writers...them saying he has it would make it so they have to make his character restricted to what is seen as stereotypical aspergers. more work then saying he doesn't have it... which is bullshit... he is on the spectrum u can look at the dsm and see he has it... but he's based on a physicist... who a lot are on the spectrum... so it just makes sense that in making him like the nerdy physicist he ends up being a character with autism traits. I'm on the spectrum...i can spot an aspie from a mile away
I'm an Aspergirl...it made setting my channel up really challenging for various reasons. I communicate far more easily by writing than speaking...but at the same time, it's probably "good practice"!
I love this show so much! I’m on the autism spectrum and can relate to Sheldon, especially when he gets overwhelmed by change and has difficulty with sarcasm (I get jokes now but used to take EVERYTHING literally growing up). I also struggle with some physical contact and am asexual, like Sheldon was in the first few seasons. The only thing I don’t like is how the characters seem to mock his idiosyncratic behavior. That’s why I wish there were more moments when characters like Penny try to understand his perspective, it is beautiful. I get compared to Sheldon and Amy a lot since I have some characteristics of both but I’m not a savant genius who is as rigid as Sheldon. So yeah, everyone on the spectrum is different!
Sheldon can’t have Asperger’s, then you can’t make fun of him. Hollywood does this a lot, don’t diagnose it so you can mock it. You usually saw it in movies like Rain Man and Forrest Gump but not only.
I'm a psychology student and I did a class entirely on the autism spectrum and Sheldon does show some signs of Aspergers although the DSM5 doesn't see Aspergers as it's own thing now. His signs are exagerated but they are there I think you should have included the fact that he has issues with reading faces because a well known symptom of Autism disorders is that they cannot make eye contact, A man with Aspergers even spoke at one of my lectures and he said he doesn't even know his wifes eye colour without people telling him what it is because he cannot look her in the eyes. It's quite interesting really autism in general is really fascinating.
Mum has a story about me from when I was little where I was supposed to be doing the egg and spoon race at school sports day. We all had a potato on a spoon, and when they said 'GO!' everyone else ran forward towards the finish line, potatoes balanced on spoons. I, however, ran to the side, sat down, used my spoon as a spade and planted my potato. I also used to strip my clothes off if I got too hot, or lie down on the floor to look at the clouds, wherever I happened to be. And if teachers or other adults asked me to do things I didn't want to do I just bluntly said 'no' to their faces. My life's dream was to be a seal when I grew up and I chased this by learning how to slip in and out of water like one, swim and bounce, balance a ball on my nose, and bark like one. I also tried hard to eat as much as possible to put on loads of blubber so I wouldn't get cold. My wonderful mum supported me all the way in these things. :)
No one is NORMAL. Society trys to dictate who we should be in order to fit into a mold. Even though I don't know you, I do know that you are special no matter what others may say. 😉 *Hugs*
I don't see this as much of a caricature of AS, and even if it is, the entire series has huge caricatures. No one that lives with their mother is as crazy as Howard was. But my brother, who has AS (as do I) is about as close as you can get to Sheldon. He looks up to him so goddamn much. He's got his superhero shirts, a shirt reading "Knock knock knock, Penny (X3)" and quotes him daily. He inspires him to learn as much as he can about code (so that he can make video games), which is what my brother obsesses over rather than physics. Thank you, Jim Parsons.
I have as Aspergers and it it really frustrates me when I'm trying to correct people like a teacher and they think I'm being as people would say a smart ass
I am 22 and I have Asperger's Syndrome. I was able to do anything any neurotypical could do and I'm in college right now. For some reason I liked Sheldon and it's probably because I can relate the most to him, next would be Sherlock from BBC, but I know when to pick and choose my battles. I like having these two people in popular culture to kind of tell me "you see you're okay and yes your different, but what kind of different are we speaking of and is it a bad different"? So, I guess I am happy that the film industry did this, but the emotion and feeling I feel about it I can't describe, but I just kind of feel this sense, "your fine the way you are, it's okay".
I’m Autistic and I know some symptoms that Sheldon may have shown. 1. Lack of common sense 2. Repetitive behaviour 3. Possible case of narcissism 4. Being very cynical 5. Lack of true maturity 6. Known for having anxiety issues I could say Sheldon may have autism, like OCD or Aspergers.
Sheldon is a pretty good example of high functioning autism or asbergers, but there are no perfect examples as they all deal with different issues of autism. No two are the same. Autism has such a wide variety of attributes. Some interpret better in patterns, some visual, and some auditory. Even within those three types of interpretations, there is a myriad of symptoms, variations and levels of autism, personality, and individual life experience that make each "auddie" individually unique. Most, especially my baby girl, are a gift to us all. There is a sweet innocence that I've seen in just about everyone on the autistic spectrum that is precious.
You're born with it, there's no known cause, but you can't "have it since [you] was 2". So... not saying your lying, only that a little research would have made your story more plausible.
Alicia Clark. Well according to my parents, they noticed that there was something different about me when I was two years old. They had me checked by a doctor in 2014, but didn't tell me until 2017. On the bright side, I can say one of Sheldon's famous lines and have it be true. I can say "I'm not crazy. My mother had me tested."
I was diagnosed to be on the spectrum when i was 9. I've always been the oddball, and never really felt like i belong anywhere. But sheldon is a character that i can completly relate to. He's awkard socially, he has a hard time understanding emotions, he gets extremely fixated on one subject. Just like me. I'm not to Sheldon's extent, but my Gravity Falls Obsession is now infamous. (Still wear my Dipper hat with pride!) I love Sheldon's character, and appreciate having someone i can relate to.
I would love to read people's mind but Sheldon doesn't have Aspergers. I have Aspergers and I have met people with Aspergers just like me but we don't act like Sheldon does. I express emotions and I try to cheer someone up when they are down and there's so many things that i don't do that Sheldon does like "That's my seat!". People with Aspergers are not that bad like Sheldon is. Will people please stop comparing Sheldon with Aspergers because it's ridiculous.
+TheJbhmetal Some people have it more severely than others. Like I have it but I don't act like Sheldon. But i used to have a friend that has it and he acts like sheldon
+Fandom Chix Still this is a slap in the face! I can point out things he does that I don't do and Sheldon is an oxi-moron who is selfish, oblivious, and picky and people with Aspergers are not like that. I can see sarcasm when it's noticable and yes I do have trouble with social skills but not like Sheldon does. So please STOP comparing Sheldon with people like me.
My parents told me that they always new that there was something different about me. i found out i had aspergers when i was 6 or 7. From that day on i hated my self always thinking of my self as a freak and an alien in some ways. Always desperately wishing to God to take it away. Some times it's still hard for me to believe and i always ask myself why just me and not my brothers and sister. If i had one wish it would to not have this disability. Sometimes when i was little i would hurt the people around me and i have felt terrible for it to this day. It doesn't seem funny when you are making your pinching or biting your mum until she bleeds ( i don't do that any more and still feel terrible for it). I can't speak for the others like me but for me it is so hard making friends and hanging on to them. It makes me cry when I watch something about aspergers but i still do it to learn more about myself. Whenever my step mum or anyone else is trying to talk to me about it, i can hear a voice in my head screaming [ SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU DONT KNOW ANYTHING!] because just because they read a book or looked it up doesn't mean that they fully understand. I hate myself and my life i wish i could be anyone or anything else but me because f this thing.
My little sister has aspergers, and after seeing this and reading the comments and can see the many similarities. She doesn't quite get emotions and doesn't quite get when to stop. And if I could have the abilities to help her I would because it's the most heart wrenching thing to see your little sister get bullied for things she can't control
Because my son has Aspergers. I recognized the syndrome in Sheldon. My son has an above IQ, goes to Cosmic Con, going to a Star Trek convention in August, uncomfortable with physical contact, follows conspiracy theories, has problems with reading people socially (scarcasm), has social anxiety and OCD. Always shows early for everything. Obsesses about lots of things (health, money, etc).
I still don't see why Sheldon is such an adored character.. If you really look at him, he's a terrible person and even worse friend. People might find his "antics" funny on tv, but most people would end up punching him in the face for how annoying he was, even less want to live with him. He'd quickly end up a loner, and he'd probably believe to himself that that was everybody elses fault. Let's look at the facts: Good ones first - He's loyal, he's at times awkwardly kind (although usually just because there's something he wants out of that person), and I'll give him that he has adapted slightly to a relationship with Amy, although in real life she would most likely have left him after perhaps maximum a few weeks, unless she was exactly like him, which we know she is not. Now to the bad stuff: He shows the antics of a spoilt toddler in a man's body at times. He doesn't know how to, nor does he want to share anything he enjoys. He's a very me-me-me person. He's constantly bragging about himself (confidence is good and well, but not when it just comes out as obnoxious boasting). He is less than unwilling to make compromises to his rigorous dislikes, phobias and hangups (and of course his rather few likes). He has little to no regard for the situations or feelings of others, and even when it is pointed out to him that he hurt another character's feelings and he understands what he's done, he'll very rarely apologize. He'll most of the time come up with some reason why he was right, and the person whose feelings were hurt somehow deserved his horrible rudeness. In the real world, if he had really been tested by professionals, he would most likely have come out with several diagnoses, and probably some meds to match and help with the problems. He is not a "lovable eccentric". He is a person with mental issues, some quite severe, and needs help. He also needs to stop using his "eccentrisities" as excuses for acting like a complete asshole to the people trying to be his friends. Sorry for the long comment, but this just bugs me to no end in a show I otherwise very much enjoy.
Narcissism has a much better fit to the sheldon character than aspergers. Narcissistic personality disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. But behind this mask of ultra confidence lies a fragile self-esteem that's vulnerable to the slightest criticism. The sheldon character also has a very strong vindictive streak, in that if he is not able to get his own way he will strike out and manipulate others to get his own way. This has been shown in several plot lines. This i would tender as a true characterization of the sheldon character, and we can readily laugh at a Narcisssit. It would not be appropriate to be laughing at an asperger sufferer, i mean surely we would not poke fun at some one in a wheelchair, or a handicapped child, in this group we should class aspergers syndrom.
tks NoName, but for me i have to think of him as a Narcissist, or it would mean that each week i was sitting down to mock a disabled person, and that i could not accept......
ELbabotas Shinigami A disabled person acting funny, yes that should be ok. But a person who has no disabilities acting to impersonate a disabled person, would be unacceptable in the modern age.
Not all people have Asperger Savant like the character played in the Bing Bang Theory. One of my children was diagnosed on the autism spectrum at first, later on changed to Asperger. Syndrome. There are so many levels on the Autism spectrum. Asperger Syndrome being higher on the spectrum. I’ve been through a rollercoaster of emotions raising my child and I am ever so proud of the achievements. With what we had to work with 20 years ago to now, with a lot of the key elements in place, my child endured what we would call now as a primitive way to navigate through our world. My child, who is now an adult, developed coping skills that surpassed what I could ever dream of and that my friends is what keeps me hoping and smiling through this fast, crazy world we live in now❣️🇨🇦
his Asperger's is forgivable. His lack of tact, narcissism, entitlement, merciless cruelty, political incorrectness, judgementalism, psychopathy, sadism, idiotic sense of humor, and poor decision-making is not.
There is no difference between Aspergers and Autism, and all countries which use the DSM have eliminated it as a diagnosis. There is also no such thing as severe Autism, mild Autism, high functioning Autism, or low functioning Autism, all of them are outdated and arbitrary labels. Autistic people do not suffer from Autism, it's part of who we are. ASD is a term many Autistics do not like, because while we are disabled many of us do not view Autism as a disorder. The amount of ignorance and ableism in some of these comments is astounding. Please look into things like neurodiversity, the social model of disability, and identity first language before making remarks about Autism.
No please no. 1 year old comment or not, this is not a good read! Aspergers is not the name used anymore, but when it comes to mental disorders, *clarity* is incredibly important, so I still use it for that sake. Lumping it in with Autism means people with severe cases are often disregarded as not having anything that bad. It was a very damaging move. And to pretend there's no such thing as "severe" and "mild" is to blur the line further and make people more confused. You are part of the problem we face. The amount of ignorance and ableism in your comment is astounding. I hope you do not still believe in the things said here. I have Aspergers. It's a disorder. I've come to understand it, and accept it, and I will admit I get very giddy when I see characters with it. This video was educational and made with good intent.
Ever since I learned what Asperger Syndrome (or Autism in general) was, I've been picking up that vibe from Sheldon's character. I'm glad someone else has picked up on this.
“I’d choose the ability to read minds”
That hit me. I know exactly what he means.
@LEDonLSD Boy do I know how that feels 🤦♀️
lmaoooooooooooo
Same
Emotional intelligence
I wish for that almost every day of my life.
Whether Sheldon really has it or not, people with Asperger's can relate to him and I think that's what matters. That people don't have to feel alone.
Exactly and even if the character has it it doesn't matter he has symptoms of Aspergers but he is still the person he is
+leo roberts and people with Aspergers can relate to him I even have Aspergers and when my mum told me I had it she wrote a list of people that has it to show how successful they are or have been and I already watched tbbt and she said Shelton had symptoms of Aspergers
lalaithan that is the point. My little boy struggles in the school to make friends and it is hard for teachers and other parenst to understand him. And that makes difficult for him to adapt. Ain t easy but we keep it trying with love.
I don't think that he's the only one on the show either. I think Raj, Amy and Stewart are as well.
lalaithan Yes, exactly.
i appreciate penny's acceptance and understanding of sheldon's behaviour a lot, it's really lovely to see how supportive she is of him
Probably because she realized it's something he can't change or control, so what hate him for it.
I was diagnosed with Aspergers a couple of years ago. I'm a fan of the show and as I've learned more about Aspergers I've noticed obvious signs that Sheldon has it.
+Darcy Brummett
I'm sorry if I'm being rude. I have a question, if you don't mind awnsering. Is it about as difficult to read scocial clues, as Sheldon descibes?
Well, each person is different. It can be easier some than it is for others. For me, I think I'm fairly good reading social clues. Another aspie might be more like Sheldon.
Darcy Brummett
Thank you for awnsering! :D
+Darcy Brummett Can you give some examples
Marrf man What kind of examples?
My nine year old son has ASD (Aspergers) and he knows how,to express emotions. In fact Sheldon reminds me of my son on so many levels. So, yes I truly believe he does have ASD.
My son LOVES Sheldon! The Big Bang Theory is his favorite tv show.
Remember people if you know one person with Autism, you know one person with Autism. No two are alike.
True they're completely different
People talk about how Sheldons character and aspergers is exaggerated but it really isn't. My cousin has this and he's almost exactly like Sheldon. People have different cases and some people are a lot more severe than others. Some people just have a hard time reading others and like routine, and some are as severe or even more so than Sheldon.
h
True. I have aspergers too and I don't act like he does, but one of my friends who also has it acts exactly like him. Everyone is different.
Sheldon literally made me cry a little in the beginning. I really would like to make things easier for others.
Love You ❤ world needs more like You
I have autism.
Rachel A. Same here! Do you like hugs? I can give hugs!
Same here except I’ve actually picked up things from him like the 3 pattern door knock i just find myself doing it sometimes
Not for me. I fucking hate him.
It is the official stance of BBT that Sheldon does not have Aspergers. However, Jim Parsons has said in many interviews that he believes the character does.
homestarsgurl u are gorgeous! "Ooooh!" In a Lil Pump voice.
@Mooky Blaylock yeah?
homestarsgurl this isn’t true he does have it; and as someone with the issue themselves I see a lot of the same qualities I have
Mookie Blaylock why not? The actor is the one portraying the character and most of the time has the best understanding of the character they portray.
I love Jim Parsons but he also has said he never watched star trek. He's an actor and question if he means everything he blurts out in endless interviews. The producers and writes stated he doesn't. That it would be way to hard to write for a character with the syndrome.
Pretty sure everyone who knows what autism/aspergers is knew right from the first episode he had it. Bless his little heart. I know how he feels.
+Shadow1995me I have aspergers too. If you pause and read all the "Vanity Cards" by Chuck Norre at the end of each show, it is clear to me he must have aspergers too.
Oh wow, I've never actually paused but yeah, that's a nice fact to know. I'll bear it in mind next time I watch the show.
+Shadow1995me it's currently on Netflix. In the UK it is anyway. Hope it is where you are!
I'm in the UK too :) I'll start watching it soon then, don't think I've ever actually seen every episode in a season (I watch it on E4 and they're really patchy)
Amperzand I love reading those every episode they are great!😉
I've always thought this since the beginning. I love that they have developed his character in this way. His friends truly understand him and though they find him difficult at times, they will always support him
I'm 14 and i have aspergers, and oh man Shelon is literally me! Finally i have someone that i can really relate to, i see myself in him so much
when i was diagnosed with Aspergers the doctor said sheldon has it
Wowwww!!!!
Whoever that doctor is fucking SUCKS at their job.
The Man yeah because why trust a doctor when you can trust this random person on the internet.
@@eaglechild4661
Yeah? I'm autistic as well, so shut the FUCK up.
They want someone to relate too calm down some people need life lessons from tv these days so do people with disorders
I have Asperger's and I fucking hate him.
The Man so the writers never said he did or have never said in the show you should be angry at the person who made it if you are Angry at a fictional character (re-evaluate The your life) for that particular reason then you’re probably not very intellectually inclined
@@The.Man... why are you so upset bro?
Sheldon is such a cutie
yeah but he's my cutie
ew gay af
That he is.
.
I also have aspergers
Im i a cutie too?
I love penny and Sheldon moments
I have Aspergers and find Sheldon very relatable and I really like his character.
Sheldon is the reason I love DC 🤣
I guess it's much easier for them if they just don't label Sheldon as being on the autistic spectrum.
... he doesn't.
"no...he LOOKS like a grown man"
yep
in reality he's an alien robot that has a childlike mentality with a genius-level intellect
truly remarkable
Sheldon is very relatable for most aspies. He possesses every single trait of an aspy and usually people like us don't possess every single trait
And yet the shows producers insulted my intelligence by DENYING he was on the spectrum AT ALL!
Liar
Ikr he is my favorite character for that very reason. It is hard for us aspies/autistics in a nuerotypical world.
+Pancratius Of Old So people with certain disorder's can't have heroes either? Jerk.
+Elizabeth Boomhower
Why would one be jealous of Aspergers?
As a fellow sufferer of Aspergers, I resonate with Sheldon.
In fact, now he is my favorite character of the show
I thought the title said asparagus syndrome
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
you just made my day
assburger syndrome
I could make an assburger out of PENNY!!!
brizzy 1424 asparagus is actually what I used to call aspergers for fun a few years ago when I was first diagnosed
I have Aspergers, more mild than Sheldon, but still Aspergers.
+filip4900 I have Aspergers. I never found out till I was at least 12
I have Asperger syndrome too
Mine is like so mild 😜 but my special ed teacher acts as though I have the most extreme case ever 😭
+Kitty Cat Baby never knew we were so common, i lived in solitude do to having Asperger throughout my childhood never knew what it was until i was 19,
If I met Sheldon IRL, we'd probably be friends.
Best friends.
Not lovers though, that's gæ
I have autism in my family and yes he is so easy to relate to.
I’m an Asperger my self, and honestly, I’ve never EVER, acted like that before
People only like us when we "realize" Sheldon has Asperger's, and find this piece of shit of a character relatable.
Fuck's sake...
Hé also has OCD. If his autism were this bad, he would also have more cognitive problems.
Oh, my I wanna befriend Sheldon!
Me to
I know.
+sampea CAML you dummy! sheldon does not have aspergers. he has ocd and a bad personality.
He said multiple times he's been tested and he's fine, but I'm waiting for the young Sheldon episode where we see that he was tested and Mary found out he was autistic and just lied to him
I wish this could happen it would be such a win 🤞 but since we're on the last season I don't think this is gonna happen 🫤
I have found the traits I know of I have related to all of my life
high functioning autism doesn't exist,
If anything he's just a caricature of someone with Asperger's. Of course it's not intended to be a realistic portrayal.
It is, after all, a sitcom 🤔
With narcissistic tendencies.
agreed
No such thing as "mild" Aspergers
Because everyone is affected by it differently, and copes with it differently, it seems milder, but some people with ASD or Aspergers can cope better with different elements of life than some others, and vice versa.
He has clear traits of narcissistic personality disorder.. Everything else about him is completely secondary to that.
My ex has Asperger Syndrome and it makes me cry remembering all of our moments. I really do wish I could make his life easier
Julia Shepherd I have ADD and wish I could read people better.
Hmmm! Maybe everyone has aspergers. Some just like socialization and have learned to be good at it.... That thought makes me strangely happy.
Julia Shepherd
Actually, intelligence is mostly normal in people withAsperger, only sometimes they have a special gift for something.
Celisar1 It's not really a special gift, it's more that they are obsessed with that one thing (or few things) and therefore become amazing at it because they are super intelligent.
iconictvmoments
That is exactly my point: most people with Asperger are not especially intelligent.
His mother had him tested: he's not crazy, but he does have Asperger's Syndrome. (I knew it!)
He doesn't though. People with Aspergers don't behave like that and they don't think the way the character "Sheldon" does. If you just did google "Aspergers" you would see it too.
I like my spot, does it mean i've lost my Asperger's supie-powas? :O.
ELbabotas Shinigami That makes no sense, sorry mate.
ELbabotas Shinigami "Supie-powas". I like that. I make up words.
I also love to say (I saw that word, in the comics, I didn't make it up).
This is a perfect comment
My best friend who has Asperger's is fun to be with sometimes and a real pain in the butt at other times. But I can't deny he makes life interesting, and I can't imagine it without him.
Right when I saw this scene on TV I thought, "Oh my God, he has aspergers. How have I not seen this?"
He acts exactly like my 7 year old. Everything down to the chair.
What chair?
BOY-SDB Khunahm
the chair
EdibleViolas0 me too I have a spot everywhere I go even in lounges, restaurants, even the acoustic spots in a movie theater, etc
@James Wagley I'm autistic and that comment is two years old
I'm asperger myself but thank god nobody understood it until me at 35 years old.
I love Sheldon,
He's such an awesome character and may seem like an annoying person at first but he's actually a caring person when he tries to be. it's hard to not fall in love with him!
You make a good point, but as far as I'm concerned the writers of the show did say he does not have asperger syndrome.
I'm on the spectrum...i can spot an aspie from a mile away
yes he has the signs but the writers state a thousand times his character doesn't
comforting sheldon is scary but he is awesome regardless if he has aspergers or not ❤🎉🎉🎉
Sheldon also has obsessive compulsive disorder.
I'm on the autism spectrum. This really hits heart felt. I feel exactly like Sheldon.
Penny and Sheldon's friendship is my fave tbh😍😅
“It’s late.. time for bed.”
“Okay!”
I don't have aspergers but I relate to Sheldon on so many levels
You usually saw it in movies like Rain Man and Forrest Gump but not only.
my son has aspergers and we have both said Sheldon is a perfect example of someone with this syndrome
It's quite interesting really autism in general is really fascinating.
psychology is a pseudo science - they just make stuff up as they go along - all of sudden everyone has autism -
GOODNIGHT PUNY HUMAN!!
I also have ADHD and it makes me upset because I don't feel normal...
ADHD: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
No one is NORMAL. Society trys to dictate who we should be in order to fit into a mold. Even though I don't know you, I do know that you are special no matter what others may say. 😉 *Hugs*
I do to diagnosed when I was 5
Briyanna Strickland, thank you. That's really sweet. Not many people say that about me...
Zoe Murtagh stop looking for attention, no one cared what you were diagnosed with
I don't see this as much of a caricature of AS, and even if it is, the entire series has huge caricatures.
I love penny and Sheldon moments ❤️
Sheldon is my favourite character on the show
I’m Autistic and I know some symptoms that Sheldon may have shown.
1. Lack of common sense
2. Repetitive behaviour
3. Possible case of narcissism
4. Being very cynical
5. Lack of true maturity
6. Known for having anxiety issues
I could say Sheldon may have autism, like OCD or Aspergers.
Ι didn't know that this pattern of behaviors Sheldon has actually has a name...... nice video by the way..
Faceless Everything has a name in this day and age
@@adamas_dragon because we’re not afraid of deviating from the norm anymore! I agree, it’s nice
I have Asperger Syndrome too. I had it since I was two, but it was confirmed in 2014
Zoe Murtagh you have it your whole life it is hereditary
You're born with it, there's no known cause, but you can't "have it since [you] was 2". So... not saying your lying, only that a little research would have made your story more plausible.
Alicia Clark. Well according to my parents, they noticed that there was something different about me when I was two years old. They had me checked by a doctor in 2014, but didn't tell me until 2017. On the bright side, I can say one of Sheldon's famous lines and have it be true. I can say "I'm not crazy. My mother had me tested."
@zoemurtagh then you didnt get Autism at 2, it was noticed at 2.
Alicia Clark, sorry I didn't explain it right. I don't normally think before I do things.
TheJbhmetal
some are. going back to the guy i was friends with. and i have it too, you don't have to be so sensitive.
+Fandom Chix whatever

I'm not trying to be rude. I'm simply saying my experience with other aspies like myself
Sheldon is my spirit animal
My little sister has aspergers, and after seeing this and reading the comments and can see the many similarities. She doesn't quite get emotions and doesn't quite get when to stop. And if I could have the abilities to help her I would because it's the most heart wrenching thing to see your little sister get bullied for things she can't control
Since when did Penny get the Ellen cut? :(
Yeah :(
Season 7 I think
My twin brother and dad have aspergers syndrome, and when I watched this show (sometimes with my mom) we both noticed how relatable Sheldon is to them
I love Sheldon. Hes my favorite character. I ship shamy too.
I love shamy now but I hate how much she changed him!
Since the first episode I thought this guy has Asperger !!!!
At least Sheldon can recognize when he's made a mistake!
Sheldon hasnt got asperger his mother got him tested
He never said he got tested for aspergers he said he got tested hes not crazy he never metions anything apart from crazy
Sheldon is autistic. Not crazy
Let's look at the facts:
Good ones first - He's loyal, he's at times awkwardly kind (although usually just because there's something he wants out of that person), and I'll give him that he has adapted slightly to a relationship with Amy, although in real life she would most likely have left him after perhaps maximum a few weeks, unless she was exactly like him, which we know she is not.
Artourious
Why not? Disabled people can be pretty funny, :3.
ELbabotas Shinigami A disabled person acting funny, yes that should be ok. But a person who has no disabilities acting to impersonate a disabled person, would be unacceptable in the modern age.
But he's not crazy! His mom had him tested 😂
My child, who is now an adult, developed coping skills that surpassed what I could ever dream of and that my friends is what keeps me hoping and smiling through this fast, crazy world we live in now❣️🇨🇦
Lol Sheldon is not a savant.
He simply has almost zero social skills but has a 187 IQ.
I love Penny and Leonard as like Sheldon's second parents ! Its so cute
The creator said Sheldon doesn't, but the actor when first auditioning saw him having it went with it and kept it going through the series
his Asperger's is forgivable. His lack of tact, narcissism, entitlement, merciless cruelty, political incorrectness, judgementalism, psychopathy, sadism, idiotic sense of humor, and poor decision-making is not.
I like this aspie test. I use sarcasm at least 100 times per day, so there is no way I'm an aspie.
People have always compared me to Sheldon, and two days ago I was diagnosed with Asperger's. I see now why we're apparently so similar.
He's just extremely INTJ, not necessarily Asperger's.
He seems more INTP to me...but that's just my opinion. :)
Please explain the P. He seems like the ultimate J.
explain the differences pls? How did you find your personality? Sounds really interesting
You can take the MBTI test online. It's pretty accurate. It will give you your four letter combination.
Squiggly P
thanks will do
I'm autistic & I can relate to Sheldon Cooper in many ways.
Yeah he definitely does. The love of Doctor Who was just the icing on the cake :P
Seriously
Not really.
Ever since I learned what Asperger Syndrome (or Autism in general) was, I've been picking up that vibe from Sheldon's character. I'm glad someone else has picked up on this.
