This legendary 30+ minute set in BABYMETAL history is called by some the "Miracle at Sonisphere". Imagine being 15-16 years old originally set for a small side tent (expecting maybe a couple thousand to show) to being upgraded a couple months before the show to the main stage in front of 65,000+ people BUT 95+% of them never heard of you, some came to hate on you (based on their videos up to this point like "Gimme Chocolate" which had gone viral a few months before and thought they were a joke or gimmick), and the Sonisphere crowd are known to throw stuff at the acts if they don't like them! But by the end of their 30-ish minute set, the crowd is chanting "We want more! We want more!", which you can see and hear at the end of this video. They had the largest pits and wall of death's, as well as sold the most merch out of all the acts performing at that event (Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc). This show was an important part of them blowing up outside of Japan and is considered a major moment in BABYMETAL history. This is why this show is my favorite of all their shows! Great video and reaction! Keep up the great work! 🦊🤘
Your fear of admitting to be susceptible to cuteness is something that's worth getting over. It's perfectly fine to find young girls cute, even for a metalhead, and it can enrich your life. It always makes me happy to watch BABYMETAL, the happy smiles are really contagious. I agree about the guitar composition. Many metal tracks have separate sections with just power chord riffs and others with single note licks, but here it's all woven nicely into each other. It works well with the more complex chord progressions that you also mentioned. And BABYMETAL use all sorts of different Metal subgenres in their music, so it never gets boring. If you'd like to check out more, I think "Rondo of Nightmare" is a song that you might like, especially the version with the instrumental intro called "Mischief of the Metal Gods". It's a feast for a musician.
Thanks for watching and the suggestion! I think it's likely "Gimme Chocolate" not really being something I vibed to that got me to not listen to them any further. I might have actually listened to them more if I ended up listening to this song first because this is Waaaay better than "Gimme Chocolate" and more up my alley melodically especially as a guitar player! I assume there's a live performance where those 2 tracks are played next to each other then?
@@GuitarsandBacon Many fans don't like "Gimme Chocolate" for that reason, or at least don't recommend it for a first time reaction. It is so playful that it throws some people off, and doesn't show how good Su's vocals really are. But often they learn to appreciate the song later when they have gotten used to the BAYBMETAL ways. There are a bunch of songs that are sometimes preceded by an instrumental intro in their live shows. Those are not tracks as such (as they have never been on an album), it's more like a little section for the instrumentalists to get some spotlight. Here's a link to Rondo with the intro: ruclips.net/video/8WBDiLMNZcE/видео.html
⚡ 💀 💕 / 🚫 Although Takayoshi Ohmura is a frequent Kami Band member, this performance had the late great Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Leda Cygnus on guitars. The bassist was BOH, and Hideki Aoyama was on drums. There is an alternate "Nemesis" version of this song, found on limited editions of the single. It features guitars recorded by former Arch Enemy guitarist Christopher Amott.
This particular video was the third I've ever seen from them (back in early 2017) and this performance was the one that finally sold me. And if you, by the way, virtually haven't seen anything past "Gimme Chocolate"... Let me say it this way: You ain't seen nothing yet!
Thanks for watching! Well it looks like "Rondo" is the next one I'll be checking out which appears to be highly recommended. I'm assuming their sound has matured more at that stage so I'm curious to see where their music has evolved to.
Thanks for watching and the suggestion! A lot of commenters seem to think that way too so Rondo of Nightmare with the Misfits intro would likely be next on my Babymetal list. Cheers!
Before you give up on BABYMETAL, please watch the video titled "BABYMETAL - Rondo of Nightmare Live @ Budokan Black Night"...it starts off with the musicians each doing solos which I know you will enjoy! Then it goes into Su-metal's solo performance that has a darker feel to it...not a "cute" song at all.🦊🤘
Great & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 Your pronunciation of the title is perfect. Other knowledgeable viewers will show up soon to give you basic information about BABYMETAL in better English than mine. (Where are Gington300 300 or Rick Wager? Still sleeping?) FYI, there are many heavier songs that you may prefer. The phrase "Dame Zettai (= No absolutely)" is originated from police campaign against illegal drugs which had started in 1960s. So this song implies that "Ijime (= bullying)" is considered as harmful and addictive as illegal drugs. We have to continue our efforts at home and in school (and in any society or organization or group in the world) to eliminate it. Now in 2021, BABYMETAL performed IDZ in all of 10 BABYMETAL Budokan Concerts either as grand finale or second song after the opening show with Su-Metal's matured voice. It was probably their message to the world.
@@martinmetal7481 Martin. I have just read your comment in other reaction video (Karate). I love it and reconfirmed the power of music. I can say you are definitely one of eligible gentlemen who can write about BABYMETAL.
Good and fair reaction! I am a HUGE fan of BABYMETAL and I don't blame you for not liking "Gimme Chocolate". Of their 45+ songs, I rank it in the BOTTOM 5. I would never suggest it as a first listen to BABYMETAL. I do like their live performance of it at Download UK 2016 though because the overly cute parts were not so forward in the mix so they didn't stand out as they do on the studio recording or on the official video. Not all of their songs have the overly cute vocals like "Gimme Chocolate", especially their newer songs since they are older so their songs are more mature too. I too was thrown off by the cuteness when I heard them a few years ago, but your brain will eventually get use to it, if you allow it to. BABYMETAL in a way is like experimental metal, so expect the unexpected and just enjoy the creativity, talent, and hard work they put into every song/performance.🦊🤘
Thanks for watching and the input! And you're right about "Gimme Chocolate" really messing with my first impression of the band. I likely would have had a better impression of them if I listented to this specific live performance first. I think seeing them performing their hearts out has a certain sincerity to it that I can appreciate. I'm curious to see how their sound has matured. Cheers!
For a non-fan your were very fair and appreciative of their skill and entertainment value. But they can get so much more heavy, you have no idea. If you ever do react to just one more song of theirs, check out Rondo of Nightmare Live @ Budokan Black Night. It is one of their darkest and heaviest, and you will see all the musicians do a solo as the intro to the song. It is an amazing performance that you might appreciate and get a deeper impression of the band.
You had said something like"I can see why some like BabyMetal". They've sold out arenas, opened for some of the biggest names in metal. Have performed with some of the biggest names onstage. They've accomplished so much in 10 years despite all the criticism. The crowning jewel came in 2020 when they were named the 10th greatest METAL band of all-time. Some fans will try to push hard to get you to listen to more BabyMetal. A person has to get into a band on their own, not by being force fed. I disagreed with some of your assessment but at least you were honest. That's all real BabyMetal fans want from a reactor. BabyMetal is still around and still strong because they took criticism and used it to better themselves.
This is more of a classic 80s speed metal sound than the more modern metal or nu metal (which Babymetal does touch on with other songs). There was much more emphasis on trebles and mid-ranges in those days, and the bass was not typically forward in the mix. That prominent bass sound that is almost equal with the guitars is more of a 90s and newer thing.
Good first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. When you said you'd heard one song and you hadn't bothered with more I knew you had listened to 'Gimme Chocolate'. That song is great fun in live shows, but it isn't the best song to introduce them with to a lot of people as it can go either way and it puts a lot of people off when the first thing they hear is Yui and Moa with their "atatatatatatata dukyun". 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' was one of their very first singles - basically it is a power metal song. This was their first time in the UK, their first major event outside of Asia. They had played 2 small venues in Paris and Cologne in the days leading up to this (where Yui and Moa celebrated their respective 15th birthdays), but this was the big one. They were originally booked to play a small side stage or tent, but 'Gimme Chocolate' had gone viral and there was a lot of noise on line, so with just a couple of months notice they were moved to open the main stage on the Saturday morning. Some people on line (having heard 'Gimme Chocolate') thought they were a joke or gimmick band and were not happy they were at Sonisphere, never mind on the main stage and there were threats of bottles and worse being thrown. Su-metal was 16, Yui and Moa were just 15, their first time in the UK, they spoke hardly a word of English and they were worried - they were warned of the threats but they were more worried nobody had come to see them (they couldn't see the crowd from the angle back stage). Only when they walked on stage did they see the size of the crowd. They had been given a strict 30 minutes with no added time for a sound check and told if they overran they would have the plug pulled on them. The Kami Band went out and did a quick sound check and they cut their set by a song, playing just 5 - they didn't even have time to mark the stage properly for the choreo. With those 5 songs they won over a crowd of 50-60,000 UK potentially hostile but mostly very puzzled and confused metalheads. Their merch outsold every other band playing that weekend (and there were some very big name bands on including Iron Maiden, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Avenged Sevenfold and others). A couple of days later they played their first headlining show in London at the Forum (they were originally booked into a smaller venue but it sold out so fast they were relocated - and the Forum sold out just as fast again). Even in a recent interview Su-metal said about how this performance at Sonisphere was so important and how it made them feel they had been accepted by the metal community. She said how they had started with a sea of puzzled faces and just the front rows jumping and joining in and how it looked like a wave spreading out and away from the stage as more and more of the crowd started to do the same the longer the set went on. The Kami Band this day were Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Leda Cygnus on guitars, BOH on bass, Hideki Aoyama on drums. They have about 50 songs now and every one of them is different. They have songs in virtually every metal genre, some are good hard metal, some lean towards their pop roots and they do everything in between - and they also mix in many other musical styles and genres with the metal. They are one of the most innovative and inventive bands about and with such variety they never get boring. Live is definitely the best way to watch BABYMETAL - that is where you will see the Kami Band (they don't play on the studio versions - or if they do it isn't said apart from we know Leda Cygnus played guitar and bass on a couple of the songs and wrote the guitar arrangements for at least one of them). Live is also where you will hear Su-metal's natural vocals unspoiled by the over-processing of the studio recordings. The whole concept was formed and developed around her vocal talents and stage presence even though she was still only 12 when they started in 2010. As a guitarist they have many songs you will like and appreciate - I think 'Syncopation' might be a good one for you to start on - and if you want to see more of the Kami Band (including Takayoshi Ohmura this time) look for 'Rondo of Nightmare' live at Budokan, Black Night (make sure it is the 7 minute video so you get the Kami band 'Mischiefs of the Metal Gods' instrumental intro). This is also a Su-metal solo - Yui and Moa will have been getting a break back stage.
