Korean churches are heavily involved in speaking in tongues. My mother always prayed using this. I also experienced it many times, but whenever I experienced it, it always brought warm feeling from the heart, solar plexus and the throat.
I really appreciate your latest podcasts! Thank you for your clear advocating of common sense! It really, really helps me to trust my own intuitions! 🙏🏼
First time I had a somatic emotional release with extreme shaking was after your spleen class. This helped me so much eventually healing myself from emotional repressiom and trapped emotions with the help of acupuncture
As a former Christian who regularly spoke in tongues I appreciate your view. It's interesting the parallels between the phenomena in the Pentecostal church and Qigong. Our practice has the view that it was a way to have the Spirit assist us in prayer because we didn't know what to pray for. It was not always a thing that came over you. That's how it starts but some develop the ability to do it on command. It often produced a warmth in the solar plexus. I can still do it but it's just a novelty that I don't see any use for. Many early pioneers in the movement had your view that all of these things were ephemeral and should be moved past.
I don't know anything pentecostal, but was raised non-denom and our tongues experience was more measured: not an every Sunday thing, but a mic would be made available every now and then for tongues and then usually someone, usually a Mom of many, would go up the isle and speak in tongues at the mic. While often none were able to interpret, sometimes someone would be available to provide the interpretation. I wasn't very into it, I didn't understand the interpretations.
I've seen some churches do it the way you describe. Trying to follow the call for an interpreter for public expressions of tongues. I think it ends up being more of a show. What do you mean cosmologically?
@@michaelyoung6469 yeah, I mean for Paul some people have the gift of tongues and some have the gift of interpreting tongues right? This babble wave is not something I've associated with tongues, I hadn't associated the community experience of a pentecostal event with the individual experience of the groaning of the Spirit until I read your comment and find this surprising. Is it accurate to say pentecostals believe there is a continuity there? Re cosmology - consider how the book "Common Ground between Islam and Buddhism" orbits the phenomenology of dharma. St. Paul's distinguishing between the various spiritual gifts different individuals may have implies a more collective spiritual action then understood in What I think the Muslims and Buddhists understand.
It manifests in different ways and is in no way unique to Christianity. It existed in the Hellenistic world before Christianity. There are various explanations produced to rationalize the experience. Some have experiences where they speak an actual language they didn't know, just like Damo said. But this is very very rare and most Christians sinking believe what they are doing is that kind of tongues when really it's ecstatic speech that has no inherent meaning. It's produced from ecstatic experience that often simulates, when expected, another ecstatic impulse that causes someone to give some kind of message in the common language of the people in the room. They just call it an interpretation. The experience can be very powerful. That doesn't mean that it is what it feels like it is.
Another interesting discussion-look forward to your Podcasts as I follow along the Nei Gong teachings that your school offers-very grateful for the chance to experience the growth of this art as I have been a student of meditation for many years and would not be able to afford the travel and time required to learn directly from you or one of the other teachers.
In the yoga sutra, Patanjali says that a yogi should not attach to the special powers that arise from samyama and should stay focused on the ultimate goal. Focusing on these powers is seen as a deviation from the path of liberation.
Your comments around Buddhist meditation and the intellectually understanding of it I found to be also very true. Was one of the reasons why I moved away from it for sometime in an attempt to embody what I had read and experience it. Really enjoyed this podcast. Again, tonnes of amazing wisdom and knowledge. Thank you 🙏
another good one. thanks Damo. when my son was in fifth grade have never gone to church, he and his best friends decided to check out a bunch of the local churches. After their search was over, he announced they settled on the Pentecostal. Church is the one they wanted to attend. I was a bit uneasy so I asked why that church? he said they have the best hotdogs. Fortunately, it didn’t last long and it would appear all they consumed where the hotdogs.
I spoke in tongues after taking amphetamines over a 48hr period and being sleep deprived. I was absolutely exhausted but lucid. I lay down on my back and started talking rubbish, I was vaguely aware but not remotely in control. My wife and adult daughter came in and listened to me eventually nudging me. Weirdest thing I have experienced and the experience stopped me pushing the drug and sleep boundaries. Long long time ago.
"people joining in..." Reminds me of Billy Connelly's story of him at a party with the lights out and all the couples are moaning and groaning, so he on his own, not wanting to be left out, starts grunting and panting. The group puts the light on to see what he's doing. When Billy tells it, you're rolling on the floor!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It helped me clarify some things in my own mind and bring some half formed ideas to the surface. It also helped me see some of my own attachments. 😂
Try some holotropic breathing work. You will have a release and they are very cathartic. It could be tears of joy, sadness, laughter or even a release of anger. They are not contrived or a goal. They happen when they need too spontaneously . No deities needed, just emotional, and spiritual release. I had taken a break from Qi Gong for a few years. The very first session I did I cried. Four months later no tears doing it daily I have not had that same release I needed on my first session. It may happen again or it may not but it’s not contrived, a goal or even a thought.
It’s the same as when hypnotism can make people speak in a foreign language and they babble out the minds nearest approximation. The Rapturions as I like to call them often make similar words to Hebrew,Aramaic and Arabic. Those in Polytheistic and the impersonal sects make Sanskrit,Pali and Farsi sounds. It’s possible our DNA carries the abilities or a memory but it is a curious phenomenon. Some who have a brain injury or shock can have a change of accent or spontaneously speak Chinese as one Australian did,yet he took Highschool Manadarin.
Cool topic. I used to think reiki or that kind of "light language " was woo woo. But since then I've learned/transformed a lot. Now, to be completely honest, listening to a light language or a reiki session, has directly produced a physical sensation in me that releases: tension, anxiety, insomnia , ptsd symptoms . I watched in wonder as my body FINALLY relaxed and I feel full body tingles easing the inner suffering . Why how? There's infinite interpretations . I don't have to know how to greatfully accept that it works for me. I say live and let live whatever helps . It has infinitely less side effects than psychiatric medication has. Not a single psychiatric med written even began to touch the aforementioned symptoms that light language & reiki assists in remedying. So, works better and it's even free? I call that akin to what some have called a "miracle." Another word for technology we haven't discovered yet . Cheers 🍻 ✨.
I’d find it hard to believe that a Daoist priest of the Jade Purity tradition would teach the healing sounds if it were merely a consequence of the movement of qi into the channels / organs. The Daoist thing is that it’s a circle not a line right?
Daoism does all kinds of odd stuff. The very fact that it has ‘priests’ is strange enough to me as it is but that’s another topic altogether! The ‘externalisation’ of practises such as the healing sounds is all well and good; it’s just a modernisation like so many other aspects of the Qigong world. I think it’s a natural evolution of the arts to go this direction, just as Yoga has as well. I am just not a fan of it as I don’t personally like the ‘simplification for the masses’ mindset which is what feeds much of this approach. But each to their own and Imany people derive benefit from the healing sounds practice i am sure. It is the same with the ‘inner smile’ which is so common in qigong. It’s a big misunderstanding and was never meant to be done in the way that it is taught BUT people still get benefit from it and so all good really.
Actually, the idea of speaking in tongues comes from the Pentecost story. The idea is that Jesus died and then his followers met and then the wonder of Pentecost (supposedly) happened where the holy spirit descended upon them like a flame, and they could all understand each other as though speaking in their native tongues. Apparently, this was a big shocker because they were all from different regions and spoke different languages. (See e.g. Acts 2:1-13) Now in contemporary Christianity, there exist some groups, like the Charismatic movement, a branch of Christianity that is trying to cultivate the charismas of Christianity such as speaking in tongues (healing etc.). There even exists a word for the process of becoming one with god's nature - perhaps implying spiritual powers, called "theosis". I fear that there is a lot of half knowledge about these concepts though, with a lot of ego and illusion if one is not careful, so it's pursuit is probably just as dangerous as the pursuit of spiritual powers through Daoism...
@@LotusNeiGong thanks for the reply! I have to say that I'm delighted that you are into Christianity or at least into its core teachings rather than the political aspect. I've found Fr. Richard Rohr to be one of the most eloquent teachers of Christian Theology and Mysticism, especially if one has been disappointed by exclusivity and holier-than-thou attitudes of some of Christianity while finding quenching of some spiritual thirsts in the spirituality of the East. There is part of me that keeps thinking that maybe those spiritual practices that we seek in the east lie dormant in our very own culture. Listening to Richard Rohr gives me the hope that it could be true... But enough promotion of some old (but I have to say wonderful) priest. Thanks for your talk, I appreciate it!
Yup there are silly sounds as you say yet then there are sort of deep mixed language sounds that can be "understood". You won't find that stuff on social media and is very interesting. However what you talk about is also very true the asana, pranayama, mudra all come from energy work. And the bija mantras too. So all super interesting stuff. But definitely not God like you say. There is also the voice just clearly stuff as you say. Many levels of things that get bunched together.

Did the video do justice to your experience of tongues in Christianity? It does seem to set Christianity apart cosmologically.

Excellent teaching

Going deeper is about going beyond limiting thoughts and preconceived ideas it seems 🙂

A bowel movement may feel profound, but it's just a body function - which can turn dysfunctional.

I got into this in the early 80s. I miss Jesus.

I never did believe that tai chi ball thing even though I like Mark Rasmus a lot. The feeling is inside the hands, not between them.
The qi ball is a common exercise to many qigong systems and yes, it’s in the hands :) you are right!
