I grew up in Las Vegas. In 1967 Cathy Rich lived on Sombrero Street, about two blocks away. I lived on Sombrero Street too. We were in the same grade at Orr Jr. High. Las Vegas was a small city back then and it wasn't unusual to know or see famous people.
This is pure Gold, world class musicians... The non videod live version is even better, the horn section is sensational, you can hear BR laugh and shout his way through the song..
So true! But there was one thing I wished when I first listened to the un-videoed one: That I could hear her amazing voice again. This one she does sing for longer. But I agree that the other sounds better
My father was a jazz musician who worshipped Buddy Rich UGH But once he played me this one and I loved it. Cathy with her dance moves and haircut is so cool!
I’m the same age as Cathy and have been playing the drums professionally since I was 16. Buddy was a huge influence on thousands upon thousands of drummers and Cathy has done an amazing job of continuing his legacy. You can see how the man was beaming with pride in this video... and for good reason.
Buddy Rich was a great drummer and just as good as a talk show guest. Always made his segments interesting and kept everyone guessing what outrageous things he’d say next. We miss talent like that!
Wow! I thought I had seen all the Buddy clips but first time catching this! I was never that crazy about this song growing up (Sonny & Cher version), but now that I heard Cathy and Buddy's jazzed up version I love it! Amazing how talented she was/is and at such a young age...she's got all the groovin' and movin' down! Even sounds like Cher here as well. The drummer ain't half bad either (lol). Truly a chip off the ol' block! Buddy was so proud here he is beaming! Great Post!!!
Cathy Rich, an only child, was "twelve and a half" when they recorded the album 'ig Swing Face' in 1967 - Buddy Rich Big Band's First LP (there's a longer CD version). And yeah, the 7" version elsewhere on YT is shorter, cooler, but no video. When Buddy died just as he was supposed to have heart surgery (he had leukemia and other ailments...) in 1987, aged 69, he made her promise to take over his band (she got a contract as a model aged 18, at the same time as she was touring the world with dad), in a time where she had more or less quit her musical career. And the beat goes on...
I had no idea she wrote the song- Ive only ever heard the Sonny and Cher version. Not bad! Shame her career didnt skyrocket like her peers from that era.
Very happy to have found this. It always bothered me the way Cathy sang (on the original recording) at the beginning of the song and the band took the rest of the song to the end. Here, we got to hear her come back and sing another verse. Very cool! Wish the quality was better, but a great blast from the past!
So glad i have found this, one of my all time favorite tracks by the one and only Buddy Rich. I never thought id actually find a live video of this song and am so glad i did, Buddy and Cathy are incredible together, so much raw talent from a single family lol. Sit back and enjoy wat real musical talent sounds like :)
jazz guitarist playing an sg!!! i love the 60s so much style and nonconformity! i wish there was more of that in jazz today it seems we’re going back in time
How cool is this? I've had this song by Buddy's daughter Cathy, on my Ipod for years and never knew there was a vid for this! Very cool. Love the audio and now a real vid to match!!!
I agree with matthewdrum1 and Don Sweeney. I've always enjoyed listening to this track and to finally see it performed is an absolute joy - many thanks for uploading.
Pretty interesting. Was looking at Sonny & Cher vids of The Beat Goes On, and there was a video of it by Britney Spears as well. Britney actually used Cathy Rich's version to start the song. Very awesome (as I have been a fan of Cathy's version for years) Spears was way ahead of anyone back then to even know this version existed let alone pay homage to Sonny & Cher as well as Cathy and Buddy Rich
dear Cathi, your a chip off the old same block! Just great! I always refure your dad as "Uncle Bernie", love and take care of the "family name" "cousin" Howard Kline
The beat goes on, the beat goes on Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain La de da de de, la de da de da Charleston was once the rage, uh huh History has turned the page, uh huh The mini skirts, the current thing, uh huh Teenybopper is our newborn king, uh huh And the beat goes on, the beat goes on Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain La de da de de, la de da de da The grocery store's the super mart, uh huh Little girls still break their hearts, uh huh And men still keep on marching off to war Electrically they keep a baseball score And the beat goes on, the beat goes on Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain La de da de de, la de da de da Grandmas sit in chairs and reminisce Boys keep chasing girls to get a kiss The cars keep going faster all the time Bums still cry, "Hey buddy, have you got a dime?" That's a good drummer Cathy has in her band.
I hope he found some modest success
You're both are so hilarious and original!! Congrats!!
Too bad we'll never know who he is 😢
She was just 12 here, incredible!

"this is my daughter Cathy, she's 12 years old and she's drunk"
Buddy was even cooler than I first thought. This is gold!
My father was a jazz musician who worshipped Buddy Rich UGH

I can't stop listening and watching this. Just puts me in such a great mood! Groovy/Jazzy as hell!
She was great in this. Love the way she put a snappy accent at the end of a verse.

Buddy and his daughter were so talented and groovy!!
Gets my vote as the coolest girl ever, brilliant!

This is the best version I've heard - Cathy's vocal is superb, better than the studio or the live album versions!
She was only 12 when she did this. Fearless youngens!
My lord, what Dad wouldn't be bursting with pride. Fantastic.
We jazz lovers can’t get enough of this.

Her voice is awesome the band is epic
I so wish I was a teen in the 60's
MOLE me two all that LSD Reefer and free unprotected love 💔
So you could get sent off to Vietnam in the 70's?
Certainly has her father's talent. She has grown to be a very pleasant person. I met her on two occasions.
I wouldn't know. Never seen her behind a drum set. ;-)
Esta es la mejor versión que he escuchado de esta canción 💛💙❤️😉
Notice the kick drum on the offbeats after the 'marching off to war' lyric, like a marching bass drum.
LomDodge that was probably not thought of just a coincidence
@@nathantl2070 I think he's done it on purpose. Fair enough though
Saw buddy live in early 80s . Only just recovered .
Cathy was 13 at the time but sounded very mature for her age.
Actually, 12 1/2
BEAUTIFUL VOICE......
I am glad to find this jewel! And they are playing alive! Thanks for sharing!
Love this version! Thanks for posting!
Pure Love for this performance
A Big Buddy Rich fan and I love this, Cathy steals the show - she has a lot of her dad in her!
Like the "Sidewinder" quote.
At intervals i find myself yelling YEAH during this.
That is the most badass shit to come out of the 60S
jazz guitarist playing an sg!!! i love the 60s so much style and nonconformity! i wish there was more of that in jazz today it seems we’re going back in time

She has her father's face and very expressive arms.
I agree with matthewdrum1 and Don Sweeney. I've always enjoyed listening to this track and to finally see it performed is an absolute joy - many thanks for uploading.

The All Seeing I - Beat Goes On - S A M P L E D this
youre right!
Encore!
Is n't it a superb blend of "The beat goes on" and "The sidewinder " (Lee Morgan)?
i hear that too
It's the vamp from The Sidewinder and she's working in the words from Sonny and Cher.
The original mashup?
Pretty cool rendition, either way.
♥ .
The beat goes on, the beat goes on
Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain
La de da de de, la de da de da

Certainly a tune he never would have had a chance to play with Harry James.

What a cool chick!
So these guys did a cover of Sonny Bono's song in the same year, 1967? I like it better than the original
