- LMS 45305 Black five Alderman AE Draper was the motive power for a Cumbrian Mountain Express tour from Crewe to Carlisle via Shap Summit and back via the Settle and Carlisle line in August 2011. We see 45305 with twelve on the hook approaching the last quarter mile to Shap Summit on the 1 in 75 climb which in preservation history stands as a record .
...and no pusher....doing it properly! Excellent !
Cheers George, it was certainly a great sight at the time.
A great sight and super sound from the black five. A nice blast from the past. Good video! 👍
Thanks Allan , certainly a sight to see and a preservation record for 12 unassisted.
Charlie Parkinson, driver at Carnforth who remained on the "steam panel" for quite a number of years in the 80's, always said that 45305 was a particularly strong loco, & one that he always loved to drive.
Thanks Andrew , I was certainly impressed when I had the pleasure of filming 5305 back then 👍🎥
Despite being brought up near an ex LNER line I take my hat off to the Black Fives. Truly an all purpose workhorse.
Thanks Keith, my late father who worked as a signalman always rated the black fives 👍
Excellent footage there Steve. The Black Five GTI sounds superb with 12 on approaching Shap with no diesel on the back, superb.
Excellent video Steve, I was there that day . I thought she made relitivley light work of it considering the load on the evidence of being there and looking at your video . Great day . Unfortunatley the end of the trip was slightly disappointing they put a 47 on at Hellifield for the climb from Whalley . But still a memorable day .
Thanks mate 👍5305 certainly put in some cracking performances back then.
@@edmundbrain456Thanks Edmund 👍
Fantastic performance from loco and crew. Thank you for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it Rob 👍
Most excellent video! A Crewe North driver once told me that the Black Five was his most favourite loco to drive, above all the others at that depot, including Coronation Pacifics, Scots and Jubilees!!!
Thanks Frank, must be right as Gordon Hodgson who drove for West Coast said something very similar 👍
The five showing how it should be done, nice one Steve . 🎥
Cheers Steve 👍
Great performance from the Five there Steve, good choice to go to the summit that day
Thanks Austin, certainly was so I did Aisgill summit for the return 👍
Back in the days of recent years when steam railtours ran unassisted and window hanging was allowed!
Can't get away with that now!
Sadly your right Jack , hopefully West Coast can get sorted soon as they run plenty of unassisted tours in the summer 👍🤞
Brilliant performance. I don’t ever remember seeing a Black 5 take 12 over without a banker.
Thanks Ian , it’s a record in preservation history and it would’ve been banked back in the day from either Tebay or Oxenholme.
Yes i,ve seen pictures of load 11 ,lan but not 12 ,quite a task which she managed admirably that day .
Nice video and living proof that the black 5 was Stanier's finest design - bar none. My late uncle was a senior official at Crewe in steam days, and had no hesitation in substituting a black 5 for a class 40 when the 40 failed. He always said that the only thing better than a black 5 was two black 5s - how true.
Thanks for the kind comment and I totally agree with you as the five certainly is a very versatile engine that rarely disappoints.
Excellent reminder of 45305. Which put in some top performances back in 2011/12 👍
Yes indeed Simon, really enjoyed seeing 45305 as she certainly put in some great performances back in 11 and 2012 👍
What a fabulous performance. I was surprised to not see a diesel then realised it was an older video. Steam can do amazing things and this is just one example. Operators needs to recognise that there is a value to unassisted steam. If it means there and back over the S and C and no Shap I would accept that.
Thanks for the kind comment and I agree with you as the S&C would certainly offer an unassisted route 👍
Superb, great sound, great video and great effort by the crew
Glad you enjoyed it Andy , it was certainly a great performance 👍
@@TheStephengthompson keep up the great work please
Well done that engine.Back in the day a black 5 with 12 on would normally have taken a banker for the climb to shap I would have thought. A fine effort.
Thanks Michael, it certainly would’ve with Tebay being the likely depot for the banker to join with my late father giving it the road from his signalbox at Scout Green 👍
Superb performance👌
Cheers John , it certainly was 👍
That takes me back a little while. Standard class behind Galatea (I think) and 12mph. The RTC stewards said poor quality coal was to blame, which makes sense.
I miss the bonkers window hangers- the ones that dressed like frogmen.
Anyway, I loved this. Thank you.
Thanks Caroline , I remember that day Galatea struggled over the summit although I think I was lower down near Grayrigg.
The Black Five doesn't skip a beat... excellent video Steve 🚂
Cheers Walter , can’t go wrong with a five 👍
Great video Steve, I was travelling by train to Birmingham on that day, so was lucky to catch it arriving at Carlisle Station.
Many thanks Alistair, a very underrated engine 👍
Hi Steve, Great video and sound.......Dave😄👍👍👍👍🚂
Cheers Dave 👍
@@TheStephengthompson Hi Steve,Thanks for reply ....Dave 😃👍👍👍👍🚂
Another cracking video Stephen well done great camera work as usual I am really enjoying your lovely videos and camera work keep your lovely camera work up I am really looking forward to seeing your next video I hope you get a nice video next time also when is your next video going to be on RUclips bye for now Philip
Glad you enjoyed it Philip .
Great catch Steve and nice sound :)
Glad you enjoyed it Simon 😀
What a lovely Bark on that Exhaust
It sure is Thomas 👍
Great sounds! Loco running very well. 👍
Certainly a strong performance Andrew and sadly not something we are seeing at the moment 😟
@@TheStephengthompson indeed, unassisted steam has become a rarity these days. I am sure that even that will go in the next few years, and we will end up like the Yanks.
Great performance from her and just made it.👍
Yes indeed David 👍
Excellent 👍
Thank you! Cheers!👍
I'm surprised it was allowed 12 without assistance, but pleased (I don't think it would these days)! An excellent performance at the summit (i'm guessing 18mph-ish), and it shows how a 4-6-0 can be so much more sure-footed than a Pacific.
A good five with just twelve on doesn't need assistance over Shap. Same for a good Jube! THEY have been known to take 13 over Ais Gill southbound in the old days of filthy Brunswick green.
@@Roy-gi5ul No, they don't need assistance in that they probably won't actually fail to make the climb, but pathing such a slow train becomes harder and harder.
Thanks Ian , think it will still happen but not without a diesel at the moment sadly 😟
@@Roy-gi5ulTotally agree with you Roy 👍
Great video, however in steam days they would have had banking assistance for that load. Even the Polmadie Britannias were double headed with a Preston 2p 4 4 0 on Summer Saturday Manchester Glasgow trains to avoid Stopping for a banker at Oxenholme.
Totally agree Alan as my late father was a signalman and worked the boxes from Lambrigg to Shap summit but his main box was Scout Green so he would’ve given the trains being banked the road ahead 👍👍
And no smelly diesel on the back banking😂
Totally true Reynard 👍👍
