- www.democracyno... - Could a pair of headphones change the lives of millions of Americans suffering from Alzheimers and dementia? "Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory," a new documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, follows a social worker named Dan Cohen who has launched a campaign to bring iPods and music therapy to nursing homes. One of the central characters he works with is a 90-something Alzheimer's patient named Henry Dryer, who was featured in a video posted online that went viral in 2012, with nearly 10 million views. The clip begins with video of Dryer looking largely unresponsive to the outside world. Then he was given a pair of headphones to listen to Cab Calloway, his favorite artist. The music energizes him, awakens him and helps bring back old memories. We play clips from the film and speak with Cohen about his project, "Music & Memory," which he hopes to expand around the world. We are also joined by Michael Rossato-Bennett, the film's director and producer.

I am a therapist whose mother has Alzheimer's. I am grateful for this story and will pass it along to my siblings. It is wonderful to have a positive message to share related to Dementia. Thanks to Democracy Now for airing this and especially to Dan Cohen for his dedication.
My husband & I sing at nursing homes. We sing the music from the Great American Songbook & older songs (folk songs, standards) and it is so rewarding to look out and see residents smiling and singing along. Sometimes the people are moved to tears, as well. Music is so primal and powerful and worthwhile.
I agree, I was so moved by this that I wrote a song:

I was literally crying as to how beautiful this was
I was often visiting a resident with advanced Alzheimer's, mainly unresponsive.... I was curious one day and got het to listen to my Walkman. Forgive my taste in music, as I was a teen at the time and this was spontaneous. I first played her an Alanis Morissette song from Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. She liked it and began playing an invisible piano :) Then out of pure curiousity I switched it to a rap song from Nas, She looked at me with venom eyes and ripped off the headphones. Was great. I put Alanis back on for her :)
I agree, I was so moved by this that I wrote a song:

This is a very, very, beautiful thing.

Music is the serum of life. Music is the Mastery of Mind.

This documentary has changed my life! Thank you for proving that there is a possible solution to enrich the lives of these wonderful souls.
There is a recognition of two fundamental things here. Dick Clark said, "Music is the diary of our lives". Also, there is an old 1974/1975 song, "I've Got The Music In Me". "Alive Inside" demonstrates the quote and the song to be true. Music engenders memories. It is in us from the first time we hear it and we remember and hold and cherish it. It is therapy whatever our "condition"! Any guesses as to how many working mp3, mp4 and I-Pod players might be hanging around your neighborhood lying dormant? Headphones? Not earplugs, but headphones please. I and my son and daughter plan to find out, where I live. Perhaps you could do the same? This is worthwhile, and WE can do this one wasted I-Pod or whatever at a time!
You're 100% right ima wonder
Imagine music awakening the senses.amazing!.
I have been working with sound and music as a healing modality for over 20 years. So thrilled that this modality is finally reaching the public! A very exciting film- thank you Amy for airing this broadcast. Edgar Cayce said many years ago that music would be the medicine of the future- its time has come!
This is absolutely amazing!!! Care needs to be focused less on only drugs, and use more culture & esthetics!
We are offering free download of some Hymns albums for this project! (I just uploaded a video about this called "Songs for Music & Memory iPod Project" ) I am an entertainer serving the Milwaukee area and Northeast Wisconsin
I once walked into a facility and found residents hovering over the CD players singing along to our CD, Reflect Hymn. The nurse told me that they do this every day and, "Do you have another album?" (They had to listen to it every day too!) I was glad to report that I did, reflect Amazing Grace. Enjoy!
Hope this makes a difference
A powerful program considering each of us may know 1,000 or more pieces of music during our lifetimes. And what a wonderful way to connect with those who have lost other means of sharing life's meaning.
A remarkable report. And to think no powerful drugs were administered. In the bible there is a story about music intervening in the mental illness of the first king of Israel.
I was pleased to see this remarkable report.
Actually not to hard to imagine seems to make perfect sense to me.
Best Documentary of the Year. Hoo-ha and rock on !
El Gran Combo and Music Therapy: great combo!
Sweet amazing!
Someone here knows the name of this Cab Calloway's music?
Yes!! thank you!!!!
Watch this and share. This is exciting. Music gives hope to many who seemed to be lost.
Thank you for this video😇🎤🎶💯
Beautiful music never gets old

Nursing homes

Powerful!
This interviewer was very annoying, she interrupted to cut off the guests last words of EVERY single sentence they made. What an amazing story though. I hope it continues still, a year later.

@Blade56762 - Thank you! I thought I was the only one here... She never asks, she orders: "TELL US ABOUT this... TALK TO US about that." How about being polite and normal and saying, "How does this... why does that...?." She does in some ways seem very compassionate - but in other ways acts like a damn schoolteacher ordering kids around. Why doesn't someone tell her?
Expand your mind!
Why ipods ? There are cheaper alternatives.
it's "basically" a euphemism for any digital music player these days.
no, ipod isn't generic...and yes it's too expensive.
i'd recommend the mach speed eclipse T180
/watch?v=xAZQWsONzCA
you can get it for $24 on amazon.
Who cares-cost of total isolation from reality has no price- take a radio no one cares ...never owned an I pod but taught 21,000 people to PLAY music.
WOW
6 people are dead inside.
Another fucking apple advertisement.
Maturity Zero
Accessibility and variety, something families can use to download/facilitate quality of life for otherwise banished citizens in our society. I'm sure the Apple think tank isn't looking at this as a form of PR/revenue. I'm sure they're not giving away surplus iPods for this reason.
I share your dislike for Apple, but how about the content of this interview and its implications?
