This is why music/art should NEVER be absent in schools.
YES. Everyone should have access to music or any form of art.
Here here !!!!!
Yes, band in high school was one of my greatest motivation to get up and go to school every morning
I graduated over 20 years ago and recently found out that music and arts are being from cut in hometown high school. It disturbs me. Music is a universal language with great healing power. The arts are necessary for a healthy people.
@@seth_5394 It is disturbing. The human psyche needs stimulation and an open mental universe that is filled with many unexplored paths; these paths will never be taken and expanded upon unless we train our minds to embrace the possibilities. I believe humans would never evolve without art. It's amazing how art can help heal the soul.
I had a client with aphasia. She could not form words at all. I discovered she could sing though! Soon we were singing to each other, "Do you want to wear your red shirt or the blue?" "Today, I want to wear a sweater with my blue shirt." It started with simple conversations, but she eventually started singing me her life stories too. She was so delighted to be able to communicate again!
Beautiful work

The areas for speach and singing are two different areas in the brain and can be used to help people who have lost their ability to speak , my grandfather had a stroke and could not speak very well but be could sing and that's how he would ask always singing can I please have a glass of wine please.
Music is genuinely one of humanity's greatest accomplishments
Humans didn't invent music... we _discovered_ music. We received music just as we've received everything else in creation, as a beautiful gift from God.

Before my grandfather died in 2020, he began to suffer from dementia. Funny enough I have the same interest in music he did at my age. I soon learned playing music from the 60’s really changed his demeanor. I would play Joe Cocker, The Doors, and Jimi Hendrix. After a few times of playing this music for him, he began to remember things from the 60’s. He told me he had seen Jimi Hendrix in concert, and remembered not having any money to buy a ticket for The Doors, so he figured out a way behind the stage and smoked pot with some roadies back stage listening to Jim Morrison that way. And, telling me the story of him missing his ride to get to Woodstock. He had been able to remember so many things from decades before, but forget what he ate for breakfast.
I plan to write a book for my grandfather. I’ve gathered enough of his life stories to fill a book.
After his passing, I inherited his entire record collection. Almost every single one of those vinyls are originals from the year of release.
It’s bitter sweet losing my grandfather. I miss him so much, but will cherish these records until the day I die.
Music is incredibly important. It’s such a beautiful thing humans share together.
This was beautiful, thank you for sharing
What an incredible legacy he's left for you. ❤
Best wishes
I think if you ever have need of money, that your grandfather would be happy that he can provide for you by selling those records.

That man hasnt sung a note in who knows how many years and he still got a voice. Amazing
Just beautiful! I feel the same way about music if this was me. I need my music! He lit up and opened up! God bless him!

Awww 🥺
@BAK - That was my first thought too! My jaw literally dropped. This whole thing was beautiful spiritually. It gave me hope that there are still some very extraordinary people out there taking care of our loved ones or ourselves. The dr and the caretaker were amazing. That has not been mine and my family's experiences over the years. Not all family members are as dedicated and still so obviously caring as this daughter was right out of the gate, much less 10 years down the road. I so needed to see and hear every aspect of this video. The professionals in this program and the family member has Blessed more people than they will ever know.
I was thinking so too and what a wonderful Voice, I bet his family misses hearing it daily!
We avoid the elderly because they remind us of our own mortality, but they're still human beings in need of human contact and compassion.
beautifully said my friend
So true
There is is no mortality we are all immortal, is just that our souls had got to comfortable with our earthly bodies and we want to stay because its the way we can be by our loved ones.

That and they’re unpredictable and we don’t interact with them enough so it’s strange to us
I saw a video of a woman who had been a prima ballerina in NYC in the 60s. She was now in a care home suffering from dementia. She wasn't really able to communicate anymore. One day a caregiver put headphones on her and the music she heard was Swan Lake. She began doing the hand movements she had when she had danced onstage. Even her facial expressions changed as she "danced" again. It brought me to tears to see her come alive again. Music can touch everyone's soul.
I saw that video also! It had me in tears and just your mention of it here brought back the memory of it and gave me goosebumps.
I saw it too. Truly wonderful! Loved it
She was so elegant and made beautiful movements.

It’s almost like he was like “excuse me? Yes or no questions? I’m better than that” and than started fully going into detail with each answer. So wholesome
It was crazy. He turned into a whole different person. Singing lyrics, naming artists from his past
When your mind hasn’t been worked in certain areas those ‘’mental muscles’’ don’t work as well. That’s why they went for yes/no questions as those pathways will be most likely still used quite a bit. It’s stunning that even though they asked a yes/no question, the music stimulated him as so much to continue to communicate at length more than he normally does. That was the point of this exercise. …A yes/no question then acts as a place to start. The music he loved stimulated him to go past what his norm was.

I'm just 62 but I have serious memory issues due to brain injury and trauma. Music is so powerful. It can soothe and calm, it can inspire...it's like medicine...
My mother had Alzheimer's, and Daddy would play her favorite hymns for her. Even when she couldn't communicate any longer, she'd sing those old gospel songs without missing one single word. Precious memories! 💙
My Dad had dementia. He responded best to joking around. That was always his thing.
People with a good sense of humor would make him light up.
Life, love and Happiness!
Same with my dad. He was also shockingly good at math and very good card player even when he didn’t know who he was playing with, who I was. He was just an extremely smart guy even when his brain was dying. I hated watching that happen though. Dad was a very successful brain doctor, a genius, but he just lost his mind. I know he never wanted to live like that. Diabetes is an awful disease that runs in my family and just really takes a toll on everyone as they age, leads to dementia and so many other not so wonderful things we have to live with. I’m sure careful with my diet and physical fitness now that I’ve been diagnosed with it too. I already know what’s in store for me so I’m doing all I can to mitigate the damage.
I am so sorry to hear that as I know the pain and I know the struggle …my father became a TBI patient in 2007 and passed in 2017. As you know there are countless types of these injuries with varying levels of damage resulting in various amounts of symptoms. It was lots wrapped into one and he thought he was a child sometimes or we would be out to eat and when the waitress asked what type of drink he’d like he responded “Schaffer’s Beer” LOL it was funny as hell when it wasn’t sad amongst other things and for one more for context….he would call my sister not by her name but by the name of a girl he went to school with in 3rd grade….the mind is a f’in fascinating scary thing for real….but the 2 things that he never ever forgot were jokes and music. NEVER and get always responded to each of them the same . RIP pop the man upstairs needed you home. ILY

I am so happy my sister and I brought a cd player to my moms group home where she needed 24 hour care for dementia. When I played a big band boogie boogie her feet began to move and tap to the music. I was a ballroom dance instructor for 3 years so I knew how to lead a swing. I helped her out of her chair and we jitter bugged for several songs to her delight. She did not know exactly who I was but she knew she knew me but she knew that music and how to dance to it. Every time I played that music she wanted to dance. She came alive for those precious moments. The last time we danced she had to sit down in the middle of our first dance as she was too tired. She died 3 days later. I am so thankful I took the time to dance with my mom in her final years.

I work with elderly people, especially aflicted with various degrees of dementia. I always try to converse with those who can still speak, ask them about anything, like what they like, if they have family coming to visit, and the like. For those who sadly can't talk anymore I resort to singing. While it doesn't always work, I've noticed many reactions from them. Some simply look at me, like they acknowledge that they are receiving me and are attracted to my singing; others show recognition in their faces in the form of smiles or their lips moving, like they try to sing along; and when I am very lucky, there are some who do join me, albeit awkwardly, and we have some minutes of what I can only call bliss. They relax, open up a bit... People that normally respond aggressively to any kind of care, suddenly allow me (and the colleague I am working with) to wash him, clothe him...
Again, it doesn't always work, but when it does, you can see it.
It worked a great many times for me when I was an RN, working with people with dementia. I sang to them while I gave them their meds or some other such care.

I don’t understand why they don’t awaken nursing homes with music.
Some of the residents aren't able to listen to music without having negative reactions. I worked in a few salons in assisted living homes and you always have the people who are far from respectful of others. The ipod/headphones are great in those situations. The music tailor to the individual changes everything. It is amazing how they change when they hear their favorite song. My grandmother and step grandmother would always want to go back to the Saturday night dance when they got together. I understand that now that I'm older. I do to
Bcz music is not a group-based preference. Different elderly people have their own different favorite singers and music genres. It's a personal thing.
Ppl are lazy
You could tell as soon as they put the music on him he grabs his hands as if he had a girl in them like he had his hands wrapped around the waist though he was sitting I guarantee you if he could stand he would have had it around I could Envision him seeing maybe his wife and their first dance with his arms around her waist and her arms around his neck
Zinnia i work in age care and they play music from their time 24/7 esp in the dementia ward!
Henry is the loveliest man on RUclips, what a great legend of a man, music is the life and soul .
the power of music
He’s so adorable how his eyes get big talking about his music!
You know that's a result of his brain damage, right?
Isnt he precious..I dont even know him and i just love him.
@@aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa790 I think we all realize that but it's just beautiful to see him get so excited
TheFanCritic you just gotta understand that this man has a love for music and it’s very beautiful to see
TheFanCritic wow you’re just a know it all! Even the guy in the video says his eyes opened wide when he heard his music!
when he started singing "i'll be home for christmas" i teared up a little bit. you could sense the emotions coming up, the nostalgia.
Me too. Brought tears to my eyes!
Me too
I saw that .... Old memories popped up !
We relate because its happened to us but as for his case his memories is all he's got when he remembers them . Emotion came up with me too watching that part .
Yes, image all the family he has missed for so long. Lord bless this man.
i never even heard of cab calloway but god the way he was singing in this video was so emotional
This is such a sad place for the elders y’all make sure to work hard so our loved ones can liv the rest of their lives in there dream home
As a forgetful person, dancing makes me remember distant memories. I totally agree with the man saying music makes you feel love. We are blessed to hear such beautiful sounds. Sending love and hugs to this old man💓
It's gonna be so weird when my generation reaches this age. We'll be old heads jamming to gangsta rap and metal
Lmao exactly
I’ll be jamming to the Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Super Mario Galaxy soundtracks lol. Oh and some Danny Elfman works! Gotta throw in some Danny Elfman in there! I’m much more of a cinematic, film, soundtrack kind of person lol. With occasional video game scores sprinkled in.
do i wanna know by arctic monkeys that song is the shit
And Dubstep
Right I think about that all the time
Oh, listen to him singing! He still has a pretty voice!
I thought you were talking about his mumbles while he was listening to music, until I heard him singing "I'll be home for Christmas" :)
Yea I bet he was a good singer when he was younger.
@@yaboyrams9500 Oh for sure. Man probably had a golden set of pipes, still does, just can't play em like he used to
@@bravo4104 I was thinking the same thing
Stunning! I cried with joy watching this video
No matter the age, a person needs interesting things to do, old folks tend to get left to it and withdraw because it's the same every day, music reminds that there are still things worth being aware for.
When she said she was taking the head phones he said *”HUH?!”* 😂
He looked pissed🤣
Wooow funny running into you here. Hope your doing well and I just want to say your a great content creator
😂😂😂😂
Yeah... and he's like, that's my song beech!
My grandpa was all about Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn before he became unable to process and the full tier of Alzheimers set in sometime in the late 2000s.
It made me almost cry when he started singing “I’ll be home for Christmas”
❤️
I DID cry when he sang it, God loves you Henry.
@@kimgrattage2395 🌹🌻❤️
Yea it did something to me too
That did it for me! 😭
This guy has an amazing voice too!!
This piece is amazingly brilliant. And so true. Although not at the declined cognitive level of Henry, my mom reacts to music in just the same way at 89 and still kicking. She knows and can sing dozens of old Puerto Rican romance tunes. I love to hear her sing them. She becomes so animated when she does. Thank you, Henry, for reminding us of the power of music to bring us back to life no matter our cognitive acuity, no matter the age. Beautiful!
This nurse would be my choice to look after my elderly relatives. She actually cares! I love her.
I agree
Amen
..Me too! She's wonderful!
She is being filmed here
@@pitchbright5960 so you assume the worst of people even when the only evidence provided shows otherwise. Says more about you than her dude
I can't believe his voice is so smooth and he can sing so well after all that time! If I get a wish when I am old I'd like to still be able to sing like him.
You'll have OTHER THINGS on what is left of your mind !
Bruh thats what your doing with a wish bruhhh.
@@mrclone5383 what would you do with a wish then
@@mrclone5383 pos lol
@@teequegaming6447My wish is me and everyone good,Lives perfect, enjoyable, and happy lives in this world and the next.
It’s incredible how he can remember the lyrics and melodies. Even his favorite artist.
That is just awesome. I’m no musician at all. But music touches people’s hearts. But none more than this nice man.
"I'm going to take the headphones"
"HUH?!"
HE'S LIKE "I'LL CUT YOU TO THE BONE BOUT MY MUSIC"
He really has a real nice voice , look at him , he's gone back in time , again a young man.
Bio
Music is a point in time for a lot of people, which I think is why it helps with dementia. It helps you go back to a point in your life while your brain is degrading and it grounds you. All songs that have the most emotional impact on me, I can remember how old I was and where I was when I first heard them and the circumstances of why they effected me. Favorite songs are basically bullet points in your personal history, so maybe if you have enough of them, you can rebuild a timeline in your head of who you are.
When I was in choir, I used to do performances for Music and Memory a few times at a local nursing home. We'd sing old songs that were popular back when the residents were young, and I'll never forget some of the reactions. I saw a man in a wheelchair, probably in his 90s, and I saw tears on his face after the performance. This is a truly fascinating field that deserves so much funding and research and it's incredibly touching to see families and people connect again through music.
The little "ooh" just as he starts singing the Christmas song broke my heart.
Same! I started crying
You could see something in his eyes
If we could only see and feel the memories that rushed through him in that second
Thats the part that I am started to ball my eyes out at. It lifted his spirit and he has such a warm voice. 🥰❣️
😩😩
When Gen Z is in nursing homes they'll be playing meme songs imagine being a nurse and rick rolling a 98 year old every day.
Crazy you said rick roll... my autistic son is 5. He's nonverbal, he makes noises and screams a lot. Somehow, he hears Rick Astley and his face lights up and he smiles and giggles and jumps up and down. He actually "asks" for me to play it by moving his hands like Rick does in the video. It's amazing what music does to someone who can't express themselves like others can.
@@CaroleHaddon That's so sweet! He's probably the only kid that doesn't get disappointed when the link for free Robux is just a rick roll lol
@@lindseysquire8417 he's probably the only kid who doesn't know wtf robux is
They can just save the track from when Gen X gets there, who will enjoy Rick Astley unironically.
@@CaroleHaddon so happy to hear that, all the best wishes from Germany and may god bless ya'll.🙏🏻
Music is so powerful when used fully in therapeutic settings.
I also love music.
As a 69 year old I too fear old age in a nursing home. We all have memories of love and music have hopes to be inspiredby those memories in our final years this was brilliant and yet so simple. ❤❤❤
I have a memory care resident that starts to die sometimes. He stops eating, drinking, making waste, talking, but if you make sure to play enough Johnny Cash throughout the day and night he always bounces back eventually.
That’s very sweet of you
Wait what, that's magic.
Awe Johnny cash 🥺🥺 I don’t listen to a lot of his music but when i do I always enjoy it
I do believe God’s spirit lives inside music.
@@aaronjames3228 its like the tunnel starts getting longer and darker but the music brings the light 😌
