You were right there! Honestly about 2 hours out. But I swear just some sketchy rocks, walk across a glacier, and then a final set of switchbacks.
Thanks for posting. Hope you get it someday.

Climbed this one by the Avalanche Gulch route. You nearly got to the top, nice job. Thanks for posting.

Alpine climbing always seems so ethereal and dreamlike, I can't even imagine what it would be like to actually be up that high. Major props on the attempt!

Nice video! I am planning to climb Shasta in two weeks up Avalanche Gulch. Those rocks on your climb looked really hard. Hoping for more snow to make it easier. Vegan hiking! 🥑🥭🍊

I did that route but had trouble staying on route so we ended up scrambling up some crappy cliffs too far to the East. Where you took a break at Mushroom Rock is where I think we got off route. We should have headed up the ridge from there. Coming down we almost got lost...it all looked the same...

Check out Byers Peak in Grand County, Colorado. It's a mellow 13,000 footer that starts somewhere around 9,500 feet. It's near Winter Park. I recommend September, after monsoon season, to do it. There are a few false summits, but they're all very near the top. I used to run up the steep sections near the top and jog down. It is steep at the top, but I would consider it an easy summit. The hike up to treeline is beautiful and it only gets better at the top as the views really open up.

Shasta is more difficult than it appears. Took me two attempts. Had to reevaluate my gear, route, training, etc to summit on the second attempt.

This was my second time! Too many mistakes were made...

My first attempt was in early August. Hotlum-Bolum glacier on North side. Time-consuming transitions between scree, rock, and snow. Gear too heavy. The easiest (although colder) conditions are in May with total snow coverage via Avalanche Gulch route. Camp at 10k lake first night. Summit by 11am to avoid weather coming down. Same idea as your recent Whitney attempt. Works like a charm.

That was my first route attempt too, during mid September! Bad choice - the snows all iced and terrible. I have never been so scared at just past 13,200' in my life before.

What boots do you use for mountaineering trips like this? I'm so used to wearing my Lone Peaks for everything from thru-hiking but I know you're not supposed to with crampons 😬
