Poem"Indian Serenade" by Percy Bysshe Shelley
    Music by Georg Wagner
I arise from dreams of thee
In the first sweet sleep of night,
When the winds are breathing low,
And the stars are shining bright:
I arise from dreams of thee,
And a spirit in my feet
    Hath led me-who knows how?
    To thy chamber window, Sweet!
    The wandering airs they faint
On the dark, the silent stream-
    The Champak odours fail
    Like sweet thoughts in a dream;
    The Nightingale's complaint,
    It dies upon her heart;-
    As I must on thine,
    Oh, belovèd as thou art!
Oh lift me from the grass!
    I die! I faint! I fail!
Let thy love in kisses rain
On my lips and eyelids pale.
My cheek is cold and white, alas!
My heart beats loud and fast;-
Oh! press it to thine own again,
Where it will break at last.
    1. EXPLANATION to the Video
    SHORT VERSION
The characters alternate according to real life or dream state.
The story that unfolds can be seen from the perspective of a man as well as a woman. It´s about love that´s been under the danger of severe temptation. The concern about losing ones own soul for not being worthy for the beloved. The nymphs and other mythical creatures symbolize temptation and the lust of the flesh, sometimes innocent and playful, sometimes dreadful and merciless.
Nakedness shows the true essence of the soul, whereas dresses and suits of armour represent the limited and restricted personality. The harp or lyre is a symbol for the heart, like vibrating a string of the heart or striking a chord of the heart. Here it also represents the fear of loss or the neccessity to sacrifice something of great value. The soul has to offer something to the divine in order to progress. Similar to the fairy tale The Little Meremaid, who had to sacrifice her beautiful voice as a price for becoming a real human being.
A further symbol is the embroidery, which depicts an ideal of bravery and virtue. The dreamer tries to meet that ideal him- or herself. Flowers of course are offerings for love. Collecting flowers means refining one´s charachter.
These symbols also deserve some attention: treasure chest, deer and other animals, wine changing colours, boat, ship, shipwreck, mirror reflections.
Death or the fear of death means not to develop and staying incomplete. At the end we all must die, therefore the last scene is in Elysium. The true beloved that we are searching and dreaming about is our own divine soul, the completion of male and female aspects. So my interpretation of Shelley`s poem is about the transcendent side of love. Adding the paintings of J.W. Waterhouse made it possible for me to combine mystic and beauty.
To show my great respect for the painter I have added a slideshow, where you can see the original paintings, each followed by my personal rendition.
I apologise for my at times bad pronounciation as a singer, and for the unprofessional soundquality. I was only 20 years old at the time when I recorded this composition of mine.
