- EURO 1984: France's First Honour
The 1984 UEFA European Football Championship final tournament was held in France from 12 to 27 June 1984. It was the seventh UEFA European Championship, a competition held every four years and endorsed by UEFA.
At the time, only eight countries took part in the final stage of the tournament, seven of which had to come through the qualifying stage. France qualified automatically as hosts of the event; in the tournament led by Michel Platini, who scored nine goals in France's five matches, Les Bleus won the championship - their first major international title

At Euro 1984, Platini was at the top of his career collecting titles with Juventus Turin and in the fullness of his physical form . He was both a playmaker and a striker (he will remain more than twenty years the best scorer in the history of the French team dethroned by Thierry Henry). He was three times consecutive Golden Ball in 1983,84 and 85 and we forget it was also three times consecutive top scorer of the Italian championship , a championship with very hard and vicious defenders especially since at the time the attackers were not as protected as now by the referees and that there was no VAR and the rules of offside had not been relaxed (2 defenders had to be placed in front of the attacker and not only one as now). Moreover Platini had to face in Italy the competition of grans strikers his teammate Paolo Rossi at Juventus but also Altobelli, Graziani, Pruzzo and the foreign strikers Maradona, Zico, Socrates, Rummenigge, Laudrup, Elkjaer-Larsen. Euro 84 confirmed that he was a complete player scoring all 9 goals on the left foot, right foot and head, as well as on a free kick and none of the 9 goals was scored on penalty because France did not benefit from any penalty during this competition. The only regret of Platini and the French fans was that Platini could not be at the top of his physical fome as during the Euro 1984, during the world cups played by the French team . In 1978, he suffered from falls of tension and vagal discomfort, in 1982 he suffered from elongation and in 1986 he played on a leg with inflammation of the achilles tendon and the sequelae of pubalgia. One might think that with a Platini at the top of its form, the French team would have been able to win a world title, especially in 1982.
He was the star of euro 84. Singlehandedly won the cup for France. He was the best player in the world around this time. A star for Juventus also
9 goals in 5 matches against much better competition? I don't think most people realize how insane this is, especially for a midfielder. Only 8 teams could make it at the time and you'd be surprised what great teams did not make it.

France 🇫🇷Platini, 🇫🇷 Genius
Platini is one of the Magnificent Seven, alongside Maradona, Pele, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi.
Maybe Ronaldo and Van Basten could have been there, had they had a full career.
G.Muller for Beckenbauer for me
And cr7 is no where near the effects of r9 and van Basten
@@madra000 Funny, since I rate Cristiano Ronaldo higher than Messi

Di Stefano and Puskas. Amongst their many talents, they were the best front 2 partnership whilst playing with Madrid in history.
@@madra000 Beckenbauer along with Cruyff had the greatest facility for the game post Alfredo Di Stefano. That is, a natural ability to do anything required of a footballer easily and well - score goals, defend, head the ball, take free kicks, make runs off the ball, awareness of space and position etc. They could even have kept goal for Bayern and Ajax. Franz though had a better temperament than Johan.
I personally think Michel Platini was a better all-round player than Maradona. A midfield creator, genuinely two footed, and a regular goal-scorer with penalties and free-kicks and shots from outside the box - I never saw Diego get many of them. He could also play as a centre-forward and score, ‘ghosting’ into the penalty area for headers, which Maradona couldn’t do as he was not temperamentally suited to it.
