Hey, I stumbled across your video. Been living in Malta since Jan 2014. You captured the beauty of the island perfectly. The food is awesome. I used to eat rabbit but then was convicted by Leviticus 11, but that is another story. I love Pastizzi (the ricotta one is yummy) and the Maltese bread is to die for. The first Maltese dish I ever ate was Hobz biz-zeit - Ftira bread with white beans, Tuna, capers, onions, olive oil, polpa (Tomatos) and parsley. Another dish I absolutely love is Soppa tal-Armla (Widow's Soup) which includes veggies, eggs and ġbejniet (cheeselets). So yummy.
I loved watching you enjoy Maltese culinary delights : rabbit, potatoes, bread, imqaret - all so delicious! I'm looking forward to visiting the beautiful island this summer 🌞⛱
Not many wild rabbits in Malta as you suggest. Malta being such a small island not much room for cattle so rabbit has always been an good source of protein. Most people bread rabbits for special occasions on their roofs or obviously buy it from butchers. Glad you enjoyed it.
Today's rabbits are bred for consumption. No one will risk a wild one. And you will not find them in the wild anymore. But it is still the main Maltese dish. Also , the 'q' in Maltese does not sound like an 'H' , its more like the sound you make when someone punches you in the stomach :)
you did well eating the rabbit with your hands cause that's how us Maltese would eat it and dip the Maltese bread into the sauce, for the full experience Maltese style Rabbit should never be eaten with a folk and knife :)
