In PHP for example there also other frameworks like Laravel or Symfony, and also a lot of other interesting technologies like WordPress, Drupal, TYPO3, etc. In Java there are a lot of opportunities for working on large backend applications in large multinational companies. It depends on what you like more. PHP for example is used in small to medium sized web projects. Java can be used in large projects, with large teams.
For bigger applications Java is the right solution. But I guess for small to medium sized applications PHP can be the right choice. Even for bigger applications PHP can be used, but of course for applications like banks or other highly secure software, Java is better.

A bank would never use PHP, they would wipeout all the money. So i go for Java.
