First Viewings don't happen often, but when they do, they're such an amazing time. Especially here, the Prince John and Sir Hiss jokes are are all so good. I hope Rob is doing well.
You have to admire the coldness the sheriff uses when he snarls "You're under arrest for High Treason to the Crown" You almost forget it's loveable ol' Pat Buttram.....almost.
@@pem1974 what’s really diabolical is that Sheriff had back up waiting outside, meaning he was likely expecting and wanting Friar to go off so he could arrest him out of spite and pettiness. Sheriff is mostly a goof but he is still cunning and menacing in his own right.
Fun Fact: The Director of Zootopia was a child when this came out, and is a fan of the theory that this version of Robin Hood is the version of Robin Hood from the Zootopia universe. As for my interpretation of the kid rabbit's last line, I always thought that it was more along the lines of "Robin is going to be a dad, and will be busy raising a family. So, someone needs to be the new dashing hero."
One has to wonder just how many folktales centered on animals could’ve occurred in a world inhabited by anthro beasts. Did the likes of Three Little Pigs, the Bremen Town Musicians, Reynard the Fox, Br’er Rabbit, Mr. Toad, and Uncle Wiggly occur in this context?
I personally thought that Skippy's last line was along the lines of, "Robin is going to have lots of kids, and I have lots of experience with that, coming from a large family myself, so he'll need a babysitter." But your theory is good too, and it could go a little of both.
This is definitely something I’d love more of, the guys doing “first” viewings of movies they do genuinely enjoy, and just vibing with it. Definitely a treat considering the other stuff they have to endure!
Yes, even if they don’t turn it into a Nostalgia Critic episode. This unscripted, no acting, no costumes or dancing around ten minute show of Doug and Rob talking during a movie is fine by me.
Prince John's expression when Sir Hiss informs him he's destroyed his beloved Mother's castle is absolutely priceless. One of my favorite moments of animation in Disney's history.
Yeah, I do wish they did them more frequently like in the past. But whenever they do a new one at a random point in time, it's always a nice surprise to see. Plus, you know it's going to be good.
I agree. It’s unscripted so less time and effort for them to produce. I’d like for First Viewings to become its own show with the exact same format just without an accompanying Nostalgia Critic episode. The show would focus on random movies that Doug wouldn’t cover as the Nostalgia Critic, although sometimes he would.
Robin Hood may have been one of Disney's cheapest productions, re-using animation from no less than four previous movies, but I still enjoy it. The voice cast all excel in their roles, especially Disney veteran Phil Harris (Little John), and Peter Ustinov (Prince John).
As for the little baby rabbit, she was voiced by Dori Whitaker. I think the poor voice work is a consequence of Whitaker just having been SO young when her lines were being recorded. She was born in 1967, which would have made her six years old when the movie released in theaters, but according to the Wikipedia article, most of the voice actors for the movie were confirmed in 1970, barring Brian Bedford as the lead (They had someone else doing Robin at that time, but later dropped him in favor of Bedford). That would make Whitaker potentially as young as THREE years old when they started recording her lines. I know you're not being super harsh on her here, but I'm not surprised a literal toddler isn't putting out very good work. On the whole, I'm glad you seem to enjoy this movie so much. This was one of the holy trinity of Disney movies for me when I was a kid, and I'm always glad when people enjoy it.
Dori's older and, one of the popular younger actors at the time, brother, was Johnny Whittaker! Just like Jodie Foster's brother Buddy in the long running Tootsie pop ad!
Look, I've been obsessed with the legends of Robin Hood since I read Howard Pyle's version at 12. As far as "low stakes"....THATS HOW THE ACTUAL STORIES ARE. They're usually very one-note. "Robin goes to shoot in an archery contest". "Robin saves one of his men from a hanging". "Robin steals from this rich bishop". The episodic nature of this movie is very in keeping with the tone of the legends. And that's what makes it so nice for me. It's like watching the stories in cartoon form. Robin Hood isn't just a hero for the grand and dramatic. He's the guy you call for small problems.
Phil Harris was quite the contributor to Disney in the 60s and 70s. He can be a bear twice and a cat once, but you can tell who that is immediately. That Sister Mouse at the church. Took me a moment to realize that’s the original Lady of Lady and the Tramp voicing her too.
For me one of the best things about Disney's Robin Hood was the songs, I mean the films opening song is just iconic Alan A. Dale the rooster his vocals are just the best! And of course "The Phoney King of England" is one of my top favorite Disney songs in general!!! But anyway I'm happy to see you guys view this Disney film!
In the age old debate about which Disney movie has the best original song soundtrack, this one gets both overlooked and asterisked because it only has like 3.5 songs...but each one is an absolute banger.
This is my husband's favorite Disney movie. He watched it a lot when he recovered from the two open heart surgeries he had to have as a young kid, both before age 11.
"Never ever thinkin' there was danger in the water. They just drank it, they just guzzled it down. Never dreamin' that the schemin' Sheriff an' his posse was a-watchin' them and gatherin' around!" - Alan a Dale. That line that Doug never understood.
I said this on the review video, but I’ll say it again: I think The Fox and the Hound deserves to have a review as well, both Robin Hood and The Fox and the Hound are Disney animated films that I’ve seen a lot and loved from a very young age, although I think Robin Hood has been re-issued on VHS and DVD every 7 years that it continues to be introduced to each generation. I don’t know if The Fox and the Hound has had as much home video releases as Robin Hood but I’m part of the crowd that has a fascination with both films because I love them both
Yes. Both used to be my favorite, and I still love both to this day. The Fox and the Hound is criminally underrated, just because it doesn't have a princess, and it's dark. I love it. But the bear is horrifying.
This was basically my introduction to Robin Hood as well. It's a rather funny story. You see my folks would usually record movies on VHS either through TV showings (That is how I was introduced to several episodes of Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Inspector Gadget) or from multiple VCRs. The movies that were done in this process were The original Star Wars Trilogy (Despite it running out of room before the finale of Return of The Jedi) The Jungle Book Robin Hood The Brave Little Toaster and The Rescuers Down Under. Robin Hood was recorded on the same video cassette as Jungle Book (and a little bit of The Brave Little Toaster), you could say that this was my Barbenheimer, a 'Robin Book' if you will.
Personally, I always kinda figured that Little John was just being a nice guy and letting Skippy have a ride for a bit, but was going to stop and let him off at some point with a 'go home, kid; I promise you, they'll be fine'.
I loved this movie as a kid. I remember being about 4, and really wanted to it...but Hurricane Bob had just rolled through, and there was no power for a few days...I was most upset. Also, sometimes when my mum and I go for a walk and she gets ahead of me because I had to stop to tie my shoe, I will go "Mama mama wait for me!" while chasing after her...
A classic of many’s childhoods, including mine. I recently discovered about this movie that it was first going to be Don Bluth’s original version of what would later become “Rock-a-Doodle” (an adaptation of the play, “Chanticleer”), but it was cancelled. The Rooster narrator is the only thing from that project that survived.
😅😅😅 oh man you need to do more of these seriously! This is what we cry out for most! All those innuendos! And I could not stop following Rob's last line!! 😂😂
Loved this movie as a kid, don't even know how many times. All I can say that the VHS didn't work all the way through, since it had been rewinded so many times. But still, great.
I always thought it was funny in the movie that Prince John was always complaining about how his mother liked Richard best. Then when I got older I found out that Eleanor of Aquitaine really did like Richard better than John.
This is usually a movie I can put on the tv to just enjoy and unwind. It’s not the best in the Disney lineup but it’s special to me as I watched it so many times as a child. Many funny moments, and mostly it doesn’t take itself too seriously except the last 3/4 of the movie, and even then there’s just enough humor to lighten the mood a bit. This and Lady & the Tramp are my favorites 😊
So happy to see this series back. This movie is definitely a favourite, love the characters, music and charm. Loved the review you did even tho I’ll probably never see the movie the same way again XD
I love these first few, and it's been awhile. Since you did them, it's great. This is one of my favorite movies, not 1 of my favorite movies, not 1 of my favorite versions of Robin hood, but is probably my favorite Disney version. Yes, the villains are great. And I met the fellow that played the sheriff one time and he was very funny. I like that you also talked about the alternate ending
Neither in this video, or the actual review, did he ever mention that it’s the movie’s 50th anniversary this year. That itself is a crime. They don’t acknowledge that huge milestone
8:05 fun fact: that’s Candy Candido voicing the crocodile! He also voiced the Indian chief from Disney’s Peter Pan (1953) and Fidget from Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective!
My mom has a funny story about when she saw this movie as a child. She says this was one of the first movies she remembers seeing in theaters when it came out and instantly fell in love with it. And with it back in the days when home videos wasn’t a thing yet, she couldn’t see it very much. It wasn’t like you could put it on Netflix or even dvd or vhs and watch it again and again after all. So when she and her family heard Robin Hood was going to be on tv one night, she was so excited and everyone gathered around the tv to watch it. Only it wasn’t the ‘right’ version. It was a live action, adult version of Robin Hood and my mom was so disappointed and angry it wasn’t the right one. Either way, when it did come out on VHS she bought it and it was one of those movies we watched over and over and quoted left and right in my family. I loved this movie as a kid and I still think it’s great!
I remember going to my grandparents house and watching Robin Hood on VHS… I could practically quote every line in the movie, hehe. and I also remember that the tape sort of got static every time John would say: “I know my name, get on with it!”
As a kid, I liked to splash around a big jar of pennies, going "Taxes! Taxes! Precious taxes!" because of this movie. Didn't even know what taxes were.
Very nice, Rob, the more Red Dwarf references in Channel Awesome stuff, the better~ My mom and I still throw the-- YOU'RE NEVER AROUND WHEN I NEED YOU! The movie samples it a few times, really. Yeah, as an adult, the royal snit of Prince John being a delightful ponce is just fantastic, plus it gave us sharp-earned fans something to pick out in Fantastic Mr. Fox! Y'know, there's plenty of merit to those Wes Anderson movies, y'oughta cover his body of work sometime~
Originally, The studio was planning to do a movie based on the stories of Chanticleer. When that fell through they said they wanted to do a version of Robin Hood but set it in the old west, as you know from the NC video.
These First Viewing videos are simply entertaining as hell, I can't get enough of 'em, I'll even watch older ones I've already seen. I think most people would agree they'd like to see more Rob and Doug reactions.
We need more of these and real thoughts. I love you guys going into your history with the movies and your actual thoughts on them. I genuinely do love to hear what people think about about movies as a movie enthusiast. Cause they always see things I don’t and help me get a different perspective.
I just quoted this film the other day. Also spot on with the voices I did a joke to my sister a few years back just using the "be gone long one" cadence a few years back and she immediately knew what it was.
Nice to have these again and what a fun movie to do it with 😎. Also, I can see the perspective of someone that did grow up with this thinking that some scenes drag. I would argue that perhaps some of the stuff with the kids could be cut, but them coming together to sing the Prince John song was fun and kind of important to the story. I kind of miss movies taking the time to just let characters just chill or do whatever 😅.
"Never ever thinkin that a sherriff and his posse was a-watching them and gathering around." This used to be one of my favorite movies. Same with Jungle Book, Sword in the Stone, and The Fox and the Hound.
Truth be told, everyone who says they want Robin Hood to be more grand and epic and stuff has clearly not seen anything Robin Hood related aside from the BBC tv show or the more recent movies. Robin Hood stories were never grand epics even back in the day, they were always fun little adventure stories full of trickery and clever plans, but never big battles or whatever.
I remember this movie well! As a kid it taught me about "continuity". Keep looking at Prince John's fingers through the movie! The rings on his fingers are constantly disappearing, changing, moving, altering in numbers, or the jewels are doing the same! LOL!!
All I have to say is, I grew up with this film and even today I sometimes whistle that one song as i amble along. Its not perfect, obviously, but its still a great rendition of robin hood geared for kids with enough humor aimed at adults so the parents can enjoy it too.

I love having First Viewings with you two!
As much as you tried to ruin it for me Doug (in a good way), I still love this movie so much.
When missed them as much as there are furry innuendos in this movie... Which is a lot.

Obsessed with this film when I was a kid.
Originally, The studio was planning to do a movie based on the stories of Chanticleer. When that fell through they said they wanted to do a version of Robin Hood but set it in the old west, as you know from the NC video.
Funny how don bluth was working for Disney at this time, and when he left to form his own studio he later did Chanticleer with Rock-a-Doodle.
@@crimsondynamo615I just met Don Bluth today.
These First Viewing videos are simply entertaining as hell, I can't get enough of 'em, I'll even watch older ones I've already seen. I think most people would agree they'd like to see more Rob and Doug reactions.
Tbh all the innuendos you pointed out, I'll never watch this movie the same away again, and not in a good way
The rabbit with the plushie is voiced by Dori Whitaker, who was only 6 years old at the time.

Prince John: Thieves!!!
Rhino guard: Oh she’s a thief alright, she’s stolen my HEART 😍😍
0:14 Doug Walker is wearing a Malt Whisky Shirt with a Disney Font!
Good to see more first-viewing episodes. Keep up the good work.
8:58 "Not so hard, you mean thing" is my new favourite quote of all time
Nice to see Doug loves this movie pretty much the same as I. It was a staple growing up, and most certainly my favorite Disney cartoon movie.
Interesting I read comments of you doing a first viewing of this movie, and then you did it, you guys should do it more often.
I want more of these... there are so many other movies
It is so nice to see the first few wings are back again cuz they are a delight to watch❤❤
One of the best disney animated movies. Probably the one I watched most growing up.
“I’d go with Marian, but I’d be thinking of clucky.”
A fan of culture.
It's mind blowing this film is turning 50 in November!!! It hasn't aged a day 🥰🥰🥰
Good stuff, love these First Viewings. Also, love Doug's shirt.
Sir Hiss is definitely a highlight of this film
Nice to have these again and what a fun movie to do it with 😎.
Also, I can see the perspective of someone that did grow up with this thinking that some scenes drag. I would argue that perhaps some of the stuff with the kids could be cut, but them coming together to sing the Prince John song was fun and kind of important to the story. I kind of miss movies taking the time to just let characters just chill or do whatever 😅.
5:28 "She gives a good cluck." 😵💫
7:32 That is one of the best reactions I’ve seen them have
"Never ever thinkin that a sherriff and his posse was a-watching them and gathering around." This used to be one of my favorite movies.
Surprised there was no comment on John sanging "ring them dry!" while choking the snake.
I really want more of these First Viewings, I hope Doug’s shingles and their after effects don’t prevent him from doing another for much longer.
Rob is the Chicken lover from South Park
2:28 “the sheriff and his posse were a watchin’’em and gatherin’ around.”
That’s why……… oooo subtitles exist. 😐
And they have since 1971. 8 years before I was born.
Cluck has the best moment in the movie. I can’t wait to see the live action remake
9:53 birds do have skin under the layer of feathers 😂
And who would have thought that King Richard the Lionheart was actually a real lion🦁🦁🦁
please keep doing these first viewings I love them
The mumbled lyrics are "His posse was a watchin' them and gatherin' around"
Great too see a new first viewings.
The intro takes me back.
Taking the kids birthday coin was just sick. A lot of us cried.
Many of the 2nd-tier voices were active in television roles as well. The Sheriff (Buttram) was a character in Green Acres, as was Otto.
