tavy@ bests passing long and short is brilliant. Ye just dont hear of it much becouse he rarely passesd. But his speed of thought was second to none! He was the mosd exciting player ever to watch!!! R.i.p George and thancks for the memories!!!!!!!!!!
Latchford in goal never expected best to just hit that shot as fast as he did becouse he expected best to keep hold of the ball longer. Thats why latchford looked as if a bomb had hit him? I have never saw a keeper end up in like that before just with a shot, it was strange looking. But with best you had to expect the unexpected. And best knew latchford wouldnt expect that great shot. It was a great goal. A dont believe any one thought that best was just going to hit that the way he did. What a player.
Tavy@ best was just the greatest player ever to touch a football. The thing is when aitken brought him down for that penalty best ten years before used to draw players in to make a tackle then leave them tackling fresh air or if they maybe got a tackle in by then best just took it in his stride and brushed it off. And it looks like thats what he did to big roy aitken there as he fell to his knees then had to lean on best to hold him back for a penalty. Am pml. Best didnt even look in any danger, but he drew the big bear in then skipped past him for roy to say no george come here if you score or make the goal am in trouble for thincking you were to slow like me now but you kidded me on there and now its a penalty. If best had took the penalty hibs wouldv won 2-1 every time i have seen best take a penalty he puts it in the top corner to his right but in a way he always sends the keeper the wrong way. Becouse as he runs up to hit he leans his body to his left, so the keeper goes to bests left. There already watching his body movement instead of the ball. You never watch the player you watch the ball. But bests so skill full he puts it into the top corner so if they did dive the right way a doubt they would save it.
Irvine Welsh writes about this period in Glue, as I recall. One of his characters - I think it might be Juice Terry, not the sharpest knife in the drawer - asks why Best, as a Protestant, would play for Hibs.
Best when his mother asked what he'd have done if not been a footballer she replied "our George wanted to be a Christian minister. I was at his debut at Love Street 23,000 crammed in to see him and he scored. My hero what a player I hope he's in heaven.
United bad management at start of 70's needed to create one to blame, about their own large incompetence. then They blamed Best by the relegation. but Best continued to play so fine at his next career clubs, mainly in USA and on his return to English league about 80's. meanwhile United took very long time to became great again, only achieving real success in fact, after Ferguson, Cantona, Robson and 'Fergie boys' Beckham, Butt, Phil and Gary Neville, Scholes, Giggs, and so on.. United after Charlton retirement didn't bought anyone to substitute him. Law's contract finished and United lost him to great rival City. then next season there. United blamed Best about bad management and club relegated. in a goal scored by Law.
Alex brown, could you imagine aitken against best in his prime? Aitken would miss at least 12 matches a season just with trying to break georges legs. But something tells me roy aitken wouldnt even get near best to do a dirty tackle unless he just sat right at the back and then let best come close to him. But even then aitken would miss him. George had the best football brain i have seen.
Tavy@ it looked a weak penalty by aitken bringing down best. But any referee in the world knew george best would never dive for no one and has been kicked in the penalty box alot harder than that. 10 year before it and aitken wouldnt have even got to touch best let alone bring him down. The guy was a genius!!! Hibs should of won 3-1 easy! R.i.p george
Even at that stage in his career he is still all class

Great to see players get straight up again after being fouled instead of rolling about for ten minutes.
Even then you could see the class of Best
best by name...
Not only have you got to admire Bestie's football ability, youve got to admire that tan..bearing in mind he's in Scotland
