- I'm proud to introduce this reasonably-priced new surfcasting rod built entirely to my specifications. It's based on the 9-foot 2-inch rod that I customized in the mid 90's and used since then for most of my ocean beach and sound fishing. From 3/4-ounce bucktails, to the 3.5-ounce spook plug in this video, to live eels, this is a very versatile, lightweight, and powerful rod. The rod is paired with the new Penn Battle III DX reel that has significant upgrades over the current Battle III. If you have enough gear, then you can sit back and enjoy the stalking of the big striper in this short video!

Wow, what a nice rod! I been watching your videos for a little while now and ended up getting into surf fishing from doing so. Love your videos sir, and congrats on the awesome rod! I’m born and raised in R.I. and I love seeing your vids of local fishing.
Just Awesome. I have watched every video you have made. and my fishing skills have improved dramatically . I may not catch fish every day but i grind it out . Still waiting for that over 40lb as a personal best off the beach. Thank you for all you do.
Hey John- long time watcher and sub of you videos. Appreciate the tips, tricks and no BS commentary. Nevermind the great footage of your catches. Tight lines, bud.
Great fish Mr Skinner, loved that 'waiter in the restaurant' reference.
I bought that same spook plug around Christmas 2019 after watching your video comparing two similar versions and you changing to the side arm retrieve. My first cast with that lure and I had to reel in overdrive to keep a circling Blue Heron from dive bombing it and it came pretty close. I haven't caught striper on it yet, but the action in the sidearm position makes big wading birds go crazy thinking it's an injured fish!
That rod is really awesome. Great example of the two fish caught here. Thats a great summer striper for sure. Can hear that adrenaline from you.
Fantastic set up. When it comes to the car, portability has been an issue for me, personally.. and the 70/30 split has contributed to the best of both worlds. Portability and a one piece feel. I am very happy with the battle III incorporating CNC gears and such a fantastic drag power rating at the price point. Now let’s hope the cooler nights will contribute to better bites as the fall approaches!
Great video. I love watching your surf series videos!!! 👍👍
John is the greatest fishing youtuber alive 🤟🤟🤟
Sea Money is half the age and catches if not more variety of trophy fish then Skinner he's a hell of fisherman but not the best
@@THERE4LGOAT Sea Money is good but no way man John Skinner is a Master, Yoda to Obi-Wan Kenobi
Sea money doesnt fish long island as much as skinner. Plus sea money is a gay name. Skinner just needs his name for his brand
Uncut angling
I have the same reel, it’s fantastic, my rod is very similar, except 10ft. Great review.
I just purchased the John skinner 9’2 lamiglass gsb and it is my favorite rod I’ve ever used. It’s truly an amazing piece of equipment.
It is an awesome rod. You'll love it.
I really enjoyed this video!! Thanks!!
I purchased Penn Battle 3 4000!!!!
Nice video John. But I must say, in all the vids I’ve watched of yours over the years, that might’ve been top 3 sloppiest landings HAHA!! Was just waiting for that plug to pop out or the line shave off on one of those rocks when he was thrashing about. Keep at it brother! Stay safe
Nice fish, John!
Skinner Sunday Morning !!!
Awesome catches
Great reel!
Awesome video! That rod looks great! Also that’s cool to see you use the new battle 3, I’m curious how you like it, especially over time. Nice fish 👍
Seriously these rods are excellent
The ever-expanding Skinner Fishing Empire! Next comes branded cologne and watches...
Bunker scented cologne, a true fisherman’s calling lol
Nice one!
I dont know how he does it. John has mad fishing skills.
Awesome 🎣
Great video! What style guides are used on the 9'-2" 2piece Skinner model? Are these the Fuji Kframe?
I'll have to try out the lures you recommend
Wow!
My adrenaline shot up for a while!
Congrats on the new rod, finally we get to buy the rod you have been talking about and using for years. That spook has brought you a lot of nice fish and this one was beautiful. Any reason that you didn’t start with it?
Distance. The spook casts maybe 2/3 the distance as the pencil. Maybe less.
Wow, quick response. Thanks for the info.
Top water is the the best feeling when you hook up on a nice big bass. I fished a lot of nights useing top water pugs and divers. And landed fish from 20 to 50 pounds in nj out of capemay in let. Best month's were may and june. Fish were returning from the spon from Delaware river and bay on there way north. That was some great fishing. John you guys have much better fishing when it comes to bass flounder and black bass. But yeah your video's are good and all the information you put out there is awesome. Your under water video's are great. Gotta love it. Its good for the body mind and soul.
Love watching your videos. I’m interested in getting your dark matter rod but have a few questions before doing so. Would a VR150 (1st generation) and either a VR50 or VR75 (both 2nd generation) pair up well with this rod? Also, is this the final production on the rod? Thanks again!
Other than cosmetics (color and graphics), the rod in this video was the final version. This video has the version in the shop: ruclips.net/video/PEybXbf3IOI/видео.html. The VR150 is a good match. The VR 50 is too small. I'm not familiar with the VR75.
John - As a die hard Lamiglas fan, besides price what does this rod do better than the original to persuade me to choose it above the GSB if it’s essentially just a copied rod at a lower cost?
I'm sure you know about my love for the Lamiglas GSBs. If you compare this rod to the 1-piece GSBSKINNER model, you'll find this one better suited for plugs in the 2.5- to 3-ounce range than the 1-piece Lami. If you were throwing a lot of 3/4-1-ounce lures, the 1-piece Lami is a better match, although this rod will work fine on that weight range too. Even if you're comparing the 2-piece Skinner Lami to the 1-piece Lami, the preceding statements would be true. They're slightly different rods. Where this one wins for me is when I compare it to the 2-piece Lamiglas Skinner rod. I like this one better. That's not surprising though, because I had full control over the final action on this one.
As always, an enjoyable video. 2 questions. Excluding price, what's the difference between this rod & your Skinner Lami rod &, Did the 2nd hook up come on the pause or when you started your retrieve again? THhanks in advance for any replies.
This one handles slightly heavier lures better, but is still fine when I want to go down to 3/4-ounce. This one is rock solid on 2.75-3 ounces, and as shown in the video can still deal effectively with the 3.5-ounce spook. That fish hit when I resumed the retrieve. I paused because I just had a feeling that the fish was there. I didn't see a boil or anything.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks. I have caught quite a few that way when I restarted the retrieve, that's why I asked. Your viewers will appreciate it.
Nice! Just a question... why do you not keep stripers?
I prefer to eat fluke.
Great vid as usual. I just happened to order a Saragosa 5000 SW and I'm looking for a mid-tier 9-9'6" rod to pair it with. Was thinking Tsunami SaltX or Airwave Elite, but then I see this. Hep Me! I know your name is on the Dark Matter, but which is the best match for that reel?
In that size range it's the Dark Matter for me, but understand I've been tweaking that thing since the 90s to get it to where it is, so obviously I like it more than the others. If you prefer a faster action rod as opposed to the moderate Dark Matter, go with the SaltX. I know the SaltX is listed as moderate, but it's a bit faster than the Dark Matter. I've fished two SaltX.
Where the rod is made?
Can this rod be used to jig for fluke as well? If not, what would you recommend?
I would not use this for fluke. I'd use this: bit.ly/31oKzr2, and that's a good light bass rod as well.
Alright John, enough fishing. Get back to making bucktails for the masses.
I notice you fish with that rock below the surface in front of you a lot. Do you find spots like that produce more fish? Thanks
They always seem to be in nasty rocky areas in general.
hey John love the videos! i’m interested in purchasing the dm skinner rod. i was wondering if the penn 706z would be a good pairing with it?
It would. I know that because there were times when I used the 706 on my original Lamiglas 9-footer. I have fished a Penn Spinfisher 6500 Bailess on the DM, and that reel is 23.0 ounces, and the 706 is similar at 22.8 ounces. So weight should be no issue.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing awesome! thank you so much for the info!
Would you use this rod for fishing rigged eels as well?
Absolutely. That was the main use of the original that I built in the 90s.
Great price point on the rod especially compared to the Lamiglass.
The rod really is awesome. This video was with the final prototype. Here's a vid with the finished rod sold in the store ruclips.net/video/bu3gfveSlpc/видео.html
I live in Oklahoma. People here also use pencils and poppers for freshwater striper. That rod is now on my shopping list.
Nice catch. Whats your thoughts on using live Spot for bait?
I don't fish any live bait for stripers. I know spot do work very well though.
John Skinner Fishing I know that you don’t. I figured you know though. Thanks much appreciated. I’ve been reading up on the subject of bait and their patterns.
Nice fish John!! What size van staal would you say would be a good match?
I'd use a 200, but some would go down a size.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I got a 150 on my 8.5 foot rod and I like the balance but I don’t think it would balance good on a longer rod.
John, I know you fish around a lot of rocks. Have you ever had a problem with 30lb braid? I know a lot of people jump up to 50lb around rocks and was curious why you use 30 in rocky conditions.
No problem with 30. I've pulled many big fish out of rock rubs with it. The key is if they go into the rocks, back way down on the drag. It's hard to break braid if it's not under pressure. This was Daiwa j-Braid Grand, which has worked well so far. Spiderwire Stealth is incredible for abrasion resistance, but it doesn't cast as far.
Hey John just bought this rod. I fish on south shore blues/stripers What would you recommend as good reel pairing for this rod?
Tsunami SaltX 6000, Penn Spinfisher 5500. Thanks for your support. You'll love it.
@John Skinner Fishing thank you John really enjoy watching all your videos and reading all your books. Seaweed on the south shore has been horrible this year.
Mr Skinner is there a timeline for the new rod availability? Dark matter j&h tackle?
Thank you.
It's ready now and can be shipped.
Thank you . Will order . Thanks for all the lessons.
John, a sincere question, before I buy that 10ft Tsunami Rod, is there really that much difference between that and 9 foot rod your just demonstrated?
If you look back at my nearly 10 years of video, you'll see I prefer the 9'2'' for almost all open beach and LI Sound fishing. If the ocean is very rough, or I'm fishing a fast moving inlet, I go to an 11. Last season I used a 10-ft Lamiglas for awhile, but now that I have this 9'2'' I'll be using this.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing did you use the 11 ft to improve line management in the rough or fast water? Or is there something else?
Thanks Bret
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you John, I needed that info. That rod sure is costly but I will certainly save a few more dollars to get that one instead 😉.
Power in the inlet. With big waves coming in on the open beach the 11 does a better job of fishing over them and allows for heavier lures.
Hey awesome video but went to check out rod at JnH and they put in store only Booo😢😖 I’m in Fl to far to drive😬 I’ll pay the postage tell-them to give it up!
I am almost positive that is incorrect. They will ship this rod.
They fixed it on the website. Thanks for the heads-up. They'll ship.
Hi John Great video, what your recommendation for budget surf rod?
This one: bit.ly/2H0TohL
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks
Hey Mr.Skinner if you had to say witch is more Moderate this or your Lami?
Very similar taper, but the new one does better in the 2.5-3-ounce range than the original. It's still fine down to 3/4-ounce as well.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing That’s what I was hoping,Thanks again!
John, which rod do you recommend? The dark matter version or the lamiglas version. Price is not an issue. I want the best rod for this type of fishing.
Please tell me exactly what lures and weights you fish most, and in what environment. Then I can give you the best guidance.
Also, do you encounter a decent number of fish over 20 pounds?
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I am using 1-2oz bucktails and kastmasters. I live in the San Francisco bay area so the beaches in Half Moon Bay and occasional delta.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I wish my friend :)
@@loklokoppa9255 Get the 1-piece Lamiglas. If you need to go 2-piece, then get the Dark Matter.
Do you see yourself ever using the Saltx with this rod? If so, what size?
You will see that. The 6000 is a perfect match.
How many pound test are the line you usen, ? Thanks
30
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks very much 😎
Great setup. I see it’s a flat calm day, have u taken it out in a 15-20 in your face day? How’s she perform? Never fails, slick calm is a unicorn when I’m fishing. A tailwind is even more rare. How does it throw in against conditions, and how much weight does it need to excel when it blows?
It throws beautifully into a wind in your face.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you for the response. What size reels would you pair with this rod? 3500?
5500 would be the best match.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I am going to pull the trigger on it. I have a Slammer 4, and I am very happy with everything about that reel. I will hold out for the DX version. That rod looks awesome. Who’s blank did you use to start with?
Excellent, you won't be disappointed. I have a Slammer 4 DX and it's very impressive. This blank is a Dark Matter. It's similar to a Lamiglas GSB 1201L with 10 inches off the butt. The difference is I was able to tweak the action and get it made as I wanted, as opposed to taking a hacksaw to an existing blank.
Will a 4000 Diawa BG reel fish well with this rod?
I'd prefer a 5000, but some guys use 4000s.
Thank you for the response! Good to know 4000 is doable
How would you say that rod compares to your lamiglas 9'2
If you compare this rod to the 1-piece GSBSKINNER model, you'll find this one better suited for plugs in the 2.5- to 3-ounce range than the 1-piece Lami. If you were throwing a lot of 3/4-1-ounce lures, the 1-piece Lami is a better match, although this rod will work fine on that weight range too. Thanks very informative. Loving my gsbskinner (1piece). Got 2 weeks ago its been my jetty workhorse and outcasting all my other rods especially in the 1.5 to 2.5 oz range. Fyi my other rods are st croix legend surfs
I'm glad you're liking it. You're right in the sweet spot with that weight range.
John, do you take the split ring off the nose of the tsunami talking poppers?
I take them off all of my lures.
John ! is that new Penn Battle a sealed reel ?
They don't say it is. I think you want to go up to the Spinfisher for that.
John ! I have the Spin Fisher V 4500 LL
I bought it about two years ago and used it only a few times then got ill and just started feeling better this last year and I am planning on getting back to surf fishing, how do you rate that reel, it has that option to free line for live bait .
So does this mean you are no longer affiliated with lamiglas and will you still be using their products?
Of course this doesn't mean that. This is one rod. There's no way I would stop using Lamiglas GSBs. I lost a big striper for me ( I’m 12 ) and I think it was about 7-10 lbs 😭
Don't feel bad.I've lost a lot bigger fish than that and so will you over the years.
Charlie0887 yea I’m gonna try to get some revenge tonight and catch some
Me skinner, can you teach us to clean a fluke?
An older video, but I still do it this way. I should run the camera the next time I'm filleting and reshoot this. ruclips.net/video/kuh2XCpeTCg/видео.html
That’s got to be over 40lbs
🤦♂️caught a couple snappers other day.
Cow?
Hey John we need to go fishing together some time. Give me a call, okay?
