Mai Idris Alooma; The Warrior King of the Kanem-Bornu Empire

  • The most famous of all Bornu rulers was Mai Idris Alooma who ruled from 1572 to 1603, under whose illustrious reign Bornu reached the zenith of its power. Alooma's first task was expanding and unifying the empire and soon after his accession, he imported firearms and Turkish musketeers from Tripoli. With that, Alooma became the first ruler in Western Sudan to use firearms and cavalry armour which made his army invincible in battle.
    He went on to subdued the So tribespeople on the borders of the kingdom. then he conquered Kano city and the province in the west, the Tuaregs of Air and Agades in the north, and defeated the pagans of Mandara in the South. He brought the Bulala of Kanem under control and finally exercised dominion as far east as Wadai which enabled the unification of the Kanem-Bornu Empire.
