My cousin had an "export model" 1.5 liter Lada with 5 speed transmission and sport bucket seats in Hungary. He purchased it in 1985 and drove it for 320,000 KM or 200,000 miles. It basically rusted apart, however the engine still ran when he sold it in 2010. He used the car EVERY day for 25 years. I don't give a shit what anyone says, these cars/engines were made WELL.
@@jonathan_wasilewski Alright, now I don't want to offend you, but actually mining for lithium kills the environment more than driving with a gasoline car... I have three ladas, and I hope to restorate them one day, it would just be heartbreaking to see one of them just going away... but you do you
@@goldmunds Yes, that's very true. I'd feel the same way if someone did something I didn't like to something I loved: It would be heartbreaking. I really want a Lada, but I don't think I'll convert it to electric. :)
Sometimes I overtook Suzukis, occasionally an Audi and a Volvo as well (not on the Ring, but on public roads), with my 1984 Trabant, that has 26 horsepowers... now, they were slow! :D
What a charismatic and awesome old car.. This made me miss my "old" (-99) 57hp fiesta which was just so fun to drive like a maniac around the places. Twisty roads, dirt roads, over hand break turns etc.. He was like a true travel company and stallion, even had a name. Could not drive without a smile..
When my mum met my stepdad in 1979 he had this exact same car, same colour, same interior. Many happy times as a young comrade. I was just happy to be in a car.
Good choice - the LADA is the only car that will start below -30° C and allow you to start it with a crank handle below -40° C. Keep it - it's good to have a backup in times of planned obsolescence products.
If the wipers don't flutter in the wind, you know that you're not going fast enough. Back in 1987, I actually went 175 KPH in my Lada 2107 (1,5L)...downhill of course, and those wipers couldn't stand still ! lol ! Anyway, thanks for the ride down memory lane.
These cars were not so slow, since the latest models had 84 HP for 800 kg which is quite sporty. And the engines loved to rev, natural with italian parents. I also love the shape consisting of three boxes. Very classic, very practical and timeless.
interior is not original, door panels are crap, steering wheel from 2103, steering column switches from 2105-2106 so the original button for wipers is not working, ashtray should be only one on the right side, on the left side should be the radio, original reverse light should be under the rear bumper... kolkhoz pizdets
I had a Lada I used to thrash, ruined the cams by over-revving it. One day I was racing to work and getting overtaken on straights but doing the BMW's in the roundabouts - you have nothing to lose in a Lada. Pushed hard on a few roundabouts and then every time I steered to the left I heard a clicking noise. When I got to work we all had a look to try and work out what was happening. Finally took off the hubcaps and the front left wheel had cracked between the wheel nuts. It turns out the wheels are not hardened (like the cams) and made for horse carts. Finally sold it to a dealer that was exporting Ladas back to Russia. Got it up to 108mph slipstreaming another non Lada.
The guy drives the car to your house, then you drive to the ring together, do a whole lap, come back; and he gets in it and drives off as if nothing has happened. Now, that's impressive!
Boris, you're always a laugh. A Lada..!!.. I rented a Lada Samara a very, very, very long time ago. It was a new car and we had it for 10 days. When we returned it to the hire car company it weighed about 15 kg less than when we started. Many things had fallen off it. I kept some of the bits in a potato sack and handed them in to the lady behind the car return desk... There were door handles, window winders, radio antenna, boot (trunk) lid lock and barrel, an entire headlight assembly, the mirror, glove-box lid, a windscreen wiper arm, etc, etc, etc... It was incredible, but we still had a lot of fun in that car. Our kids (who are now adults) had a contest going as to what might fall off on any particular day...
The deal with (ex)eastern-bloc cars like Lada or FSO was the non existent quality control. So it's hit and miss with them. You could get an immaculate example that would go 400,000+km no problems or you could get something like you described, built by random drunks on a Friday night shift in the worst years of their car production...
That was my favorite lap on the track to watch. 2101 is AMAZING lil car. SR20DET would be a fun swap once the bulletproof Lada motor gets tired, because they will never die just like AK
Kamui Believe it or not, the 2101 was a pretty good sedan compared to 70s standards. It was licensed after Fiat 124 (European Car of the Year 1967! - and SEAT licensed it too) and even had several upgrades and improvements over that one. So, it was a good car. Sure, 40 years later it looks funny...
Wow, a mint Lada! Crash at at the first sight :P I remember sitting in one (uncle as a proud owner) as a kid. The nice odour inside and a soft purr of the engine were unforgettable..
Lada produced the best cars ever. Nothing proves it better, than the legendary Ayrton Senna's interesting wish before the first Hungarian Grand Prix (the first F1 GP East to the iron curtain) in 1986. He wanted to drive around the track with a vehicle that every Hungarian drive with every day. So they gave him a Lada and he pushed it for a full lap around the circuit. :D
A very entertaining video, it brings back mixed memories :) I actually grew up with this car (an estate "Combi", that is). The rigid back axle used to jump around whereever it liked, so kudos to you guys taking on the Nürburgring. My parents owned our "Nikita" for 11 or 12 years and only had a serious breakdown once. But even this broken timing chain could be fixed at the roadside. True story, but don't ask me how (I was probably 8 by that time). Apparently, my dad carried around spare parts in the trunk for everything except a nuke hazard, I guess. Over all, the car was fun. I remember cleaning and reassembly of the carburator on the kitchen table during holidays in Italy, I learned how to adjust valve play, ignition timing, TDC and several other things. The downside though were both the provenience and color, not to mention the bullying at school: Countless times we got pulled over by the police and our car got examined quite thoroughly. Well, those were the times of the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). I can feel with my neighbor who nearly cried from sympathy when, in 83/84, my dad showed up with a brand new Datsun Sunny one day.
Just for the record. It was licenced after the Fiat 124 and not the 125. The Жигули́/ Zhiguli/ VA3 2101 was different in the engine and brakes mostly and the trackwidth, also ride height was increased. It got the newer, yet Fiat licenced OHC engine (the 124 was OHV) and instead of diskbrakes all round, the Zhiguli was built with drums at the rear, but it was dual-circuit brake system (not single as in the 124) The 125 "copy" was built in Poland the Polski Fiat/ FSO 125p.
Peter M 125 is not a copy either. Its also a fiat licensed car. Both the 124 and 125 were fiat models, 125 having more room, and being slightly larger in trunk space....
