Very unfortunately, Republicans voters aren't known for their carefulness - nor _caring_ , for that matter.

Yet, he won in a landslide with 70% of the vote. I agree with NYT opinion writer Charles Blow on this one. At some point we've got to stop blaming corrupt and dangerous leaders like DeSantis and look to the quality of people who put him in office. They evidently love his nonsense. We will lose our republic to citizen ignorance, stupidity, and non participation.
This is why Trump’s incessant slamming of the media, calling them “the enemy of the people,” has to be taken seriously for its truly dangerous meaning.
Trump should have impeached for that statement alone!
The irony of using "the enemy of the people" was the favorite slogan of Soviet Union.
Ironically, TRUMP and his/its followers are The Enemies of the People - and of Democracy!
Because the press is protected by the first amendment, media companies should have sued Trump for defamation after he repeatedly made those statements. I can't believe how media companies just allowed Trump to continue repeating this lie and undermining the press. At times the press sure can be dumb.
This is real journalism. Keep fighting fascism and government censorship.

@@ealexander71 spreading lies and misinformation isn't free speech. When the government tries to limit speech, that is censorship. What a private company deems be and is responsible for what is said by it's participants, that isn't a first amendment violation.
My mother's family came to America from Hungary. I'm second generation American. The story of what is happening in Hungary (and also happening in Florida and elsewhere in America) is terrifying beyond words.
It's sickening to the core to see Republican CPAC events taking place overseas where people like Viktor Orban and Jain Bolsonaro are hailed as "leaders to watch and to learn." American politicians are resurrecting what happened in the 1930's, where a political faction aligned themselves with Nazi Germany. "America First." Sound familiar?
Absolutely....made all the worse by Carlson sucking up to Orbán.. . Trump is a Cancer in American Society... Aided and Abetted by Rupert Murdoch and Musk and Twitter...
Yes, and it's such an important example. In the middle of Europe, where it would never have been expected. Orban started as a pro-democracy candidate. But in a new democracy, by having power long enough, both individually and as a party, this is what happens.
And the parallels and lessons. When someone questions the corruption: "I'm protecting you from the deviants, from the decadence that Europe is trying to force down our throats". The exact same techniques that are being used here.
This is exactly what Timothy Snyder warned about in "On Tyranny" and "The Road to Unfreedom".
In late 2021 Mike Pence made the pilgrimage to Budapest, Hungary to visit rising autocrat prime minister Victor Orbon. Reportedly, Pence attended a conference on banning abortion in order to raise the population of white people in the world.
The prob is that: in every country a minority of people demande, want authoritarian gov.
Whatever you think about Rachel’s politics, she is an important voice for Democracy as she is an incisive critical thinker who provides both focused and sweeping analysis that is always profoundly insightful. I look forward to seeing her Monday night appearances every week and miss her not being on the other nights. I’d love to see Rachel interview Fani Willis to see where she’s at in regards to some of the points raised here.

Fani Willis would be downright foolish to do any interviews regarding her investigations and findings before she finishes the job of putting tfg & company in a cage. Sounds like you want the criminals to be informed of her plans to take them down and her progress, as that is exactly what such an interview would accomplish.

@@henryhudson1297 Fani usually does an interview (at least with local ATL stations) after a big announcement in this case and a couple of other large cases she's currently prosecuting. However, she never gives up anything we don't already know, but she is reassuring that justice is her only focus.
Fox should be closed down for yelling fire in a theater.

Americans can do little except vote. There are a few key Americans that are in positions to do something of value, including cutting the head off the snake to hopefully slow the behavior of many political leaders authoritarian actions.

That's kinda the problem. Most people don't care about politics. They care about their basic needs like food/shelter and clothing, and when they have any spare capacity, they are not interested in who is in power, they are interested what the Kardashian are wearing. It's like school work, some people just don't like math.

When Democrats talk about a 'threat to democracy', they really mean a threat to the Democrats' control of the reins of political power. Remember - The Democrats don't care about truth and honor. They're in the game to win by any means necessary, including nationwide election fraud.

How Authoritarians subvert democracies should be part of basic education in civics.
It's necessary self defence for all citizens of a democracy.
Apparently It's a standard part of German education, as they have extreme experience with the effects of it, and they use what's currently happening in America as an example.

Terrifying what's currently going on here at home. However, we must keep reminding ourselves that the fringes, although frequently newsworthy because they are the most boisterous, do NOT speak for the majority of Americans. We still have our Universities, our courts who are willing to push back both state and federal. Autonomous federal agencies. I still have hope for us, although it is waning.

Germany has its own problems, although the far right is on a smaller scale and does not hold power in any of the 16 states. Learning the reasons for the collapse of Germany's weak democracy in 1933 is part of the school curriculum, as well as learning about the Holocaust (the far right would love laws banning this because it might make a student feel ashamed of their grandparents). To my knowledge, authoritarian tendencies in the USA are not (yet) part of the official curriculum, although individual teachers are free to show their students parallels from anywhere in the world.
The European Union has been much too slow to take action against Hungary for its abuses of its rules for member states. All the more frustrating because Hungary is a "taker", getting much more funding from the EU than it pays into it. A lot like red states in the US that are heavily dependent on federal funds but bite the hand that feeds them.
RON DESANTIS of Florida would ban such teachings. He doesn't want people to know what's going on, how fascism is taking root under the guidance of people like him. All under the pretenses of "putting America First," and "abiding by Christian ideals." Well, those are facade slogans hiding what's really going on. More people need to wake up, yet, disinfo flows so freely now, intentionally creating noise and doubt to keep people from waking. Even "woke" is now hijacked.
No one unpacks a story like you do, Rachel. Please keep unpacking and shedding the light on what's happening in the US.

considering each time that the characters changed but the plot remained essentially the same, WW3 is already underway. The question is how quickly those of us of a civilized democratic society step up to stop the rise of authoritarian fascism, classist elitism & nationalist extremism.
That is an important fact. 4 generations out means few, if any, remember the actual effects of WWII. Certainly not our leaders. History repeats itself because people become complacent. We forget. We think things have changed and we don't need to pay attention. It's not true. And these attacks on the press and education are aimed at making us forget and making us look away. We need to participate in Democracy daily. We need to demand accurate history be taught in schools. We need an adversarial independent press.

Very well done! You coverred a lot of distinct topics that I didn't know about, and you did a great job of drawing the connection to both what is going on in the U.S. and what is likely to happen. There really is no getting arround the observation that this is a growing trend in Republican politics. Not all Republicans have authoritarian ambitions, but the anti-democracy leaders are all Republicans. I hope this becomes a major voting issue in future elections. It seems like it was in 2020, but that could simply be due to bad candidates. Their progress MUST be resisted.

I never thought I would see the fall of America in my life time. Some parts of the GOP are a disgrace. I have a friend who is transgender and there was going to big a family trip to America which the family has cancelled due to concerns of her safety

I've been watching both the resilience and rise of democracies around the world. Yes, they are under threat, and in places like Russia or Hungary, the authoritarians have already taken over. But, not everywhere. Democracy is elastic, but can break - though it takes a lot to break it. Great stuff Rachel!

To do these investigative reports, it’s so demanding! To be thorough, it’s so time consuming! It can become so overwhelming! Fortunately, there are some of the greatest reporters that do come together to balance and discuss issues at hand!

They had blankets for doors to the house because the doors were stolen for money.

I don't understand how The 45th and his crew's actions are not classified as Treason. It appears to me that nearly everything they've done (Are doing) falls under that category. You're not going to get strong laws about treason in America because of all the traitors, including the

I think we should have means testing for red states. No federal funds till they meet federal requirements for fixing their obvious problems.
