Right now I’m watching an English translation of a Japanese AI playing a Japanese translation of an English game made to look like a Japanese dating sim. This is the most confusing experience I have ever had.
The translators of these channels really are unsung heroes. Without them, us non-Japanese speakers wouldn't be able to enjoy these videos nearly as much as we do with them. It's seriously much appreciated.
Really? Did you guys understand wtf is happening? Cuz Ai-chan just commented the dialogs and the translator just translated that... We don't know what the characters are saying! I didn't understand anything... :(
sefirot57 As they said at the beggining, youtube wouldn't let them put subtitles from AI-chan and game together well enought. Most of us already know the game and at least for me it's more about waiting for reation to... later things. So subtitles like these are fine for me. If you haven't (and from your comment I guess you haven't) go play or watch it somewhere else, because believe me, you want to experience it the normal, not AI-chan way first. You won't regret it.
If I am trapped in a video game and regained my sentience, I guess I would go out of my way to meet someone as real as me. I guess I would've done the same thing Monika did.
KIZUNA COMING WITH THE HARD TRUTHS ABOUT THE GARBAGE PROTAGONIST DUDE! This is by far the funniest DDLC gameplay I've seen and I've seen a LOT of them, I love her so much
I think the protagonist is lazy and rude. But the insistent personality of sayori is more annoying. "you have to socialize even if you do not want to". I feel that the boy is bad, for not doing what a pretty girl says and putting a smile. That is the definition of being rude to Ai-chan. I do not want to defend the protagonist, because he is shit. But it is not for rejecting the request of some girl who tries to be "nice".
"You didn't think such an irritating, disgusting failure of a human being would come to your club, did you?" I don't think i've ever seen Kizuna Ai hate something with such passion! It's funny because apparently the MC was designed to be as stereotypical of a VN protagonist as possible. According to Dan Salvato, more experienced VN players tended to react with "Ha! Of course he would say that" rather than the "WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOU DOUCHE?!" reaction thay everyone else seems to have.
It's not even that. Kizuna Ai just hates men who remind her of herself. See the Destiny's Child playthrough where she rips on the male MC in that one too.
I like how Kizuna decides that Sayori and the protagonist should get together literally before she even sees Sayori. That should make the end of act 1 interesting... Also amusing: Kizuna immediately pegs Natsuki as the tsundere. It must stink to be a short, mildly temperamental girl in Japan, with everyone calling you a tsundere at the first excuse.
Timothy McLean I don't think that's the reason. I think the reason is because of her portrait. The second thing is that real life humans look completely different from anime. If you've seen enough anime, you can sometimes pinpoint certain tropes right away.
Johnny Wu Premuch. A lot of anime tropes are pretty easy to spot the more you get into it, it rarely ever diverges or tries to go for reversals and commentary like in western media (as far as I can tell). Natsuki is short, has twin tails and crosses her arms in one of her portraits. I can think of three girls off the top of my head who also fit that description, Severa/Selena from Fire Emblem, Izumo Kamiki from Blue Exorcist and the blonde twin tailed girl from The World God Only Knows. In fact, in TWGOK the protagonist constantly points out the typical tropes that every girl he meets has so it shows that Japan is at least somewhat aware of it and lives by it.
Yume Sekaii I called the clones from fates like the originals in awakening so it’s still severa for me (I think the names origin lays in the Russian language wich means North and her personality makes her a pretty good ice queen already)
Don't worry she will do some more videos but we may have a problem with Kizuna Ai completing DDLC. In her Silent Hills PT playthrough she didn't completely finish the game because the final puzzle was too complicated and probably scared her for real. She did get the glitch pseudo ending though.
As for MC "Being a dick to sayori" some of the stuff he says is insensitive or potentially hurtful, but it's within the range of what is normal for friends like that anyway. The way Sayori talks about how MC takes care of her shows that he really does care about her. He doesn't really have a way of knowing that what he says might be hurting Sayori because she never shows it, especially to him. I still don't even believe his words hurt her most of the time, because it seems like she was only genuinely happy when she was with him, up until friday when she started to fall apart. I think her fall was entirely driven by Monika's tampering, and nothing MC said or did was a factor. Not knowing she's depressed is not being a dick, thats just not having the tools to handle it.
Don't praise it too fast. I was impressed by how fast the _French_ translation got finished... And it ended up being terrible. Awful grammar everywhere, one of the game's earliest lines of dialogue became the complete opposite in terms of meaning (basically implying the MC and Sayori are a *couple* at the start of the game), and the guys who did the job added a 300 mb file to have their names inserted in the credits. Oh and the exe file also has their name on it too. That's scummy business, they did it fast just for bragging rights. Who knows how accurate the Japanese version is... but translating is a real job. Those guys were anime fansubbers. You probably know how the quality is.
While I understand Blauze's concern, we try to make a serious effort with the subtitles presented. The glaring mistakes that O'Laverly can name (which I don't really technically see) could be that we try to translate in a way that makes sense to the native English speaker. There are many, MANY times where you cannot translate too literally from Japanese to English (and vice versa) because concepts cannot be conveyed within such a short working space. Sometimes, you have to make sacrifices to ensure the caption still makes sense to the reader.
No hostility. If there are issues (and, believe me, issue still exist -- I'm a terrible proofreader it seems), please let us know. I would recommend you join the Discord server and kick our butts if we made errors. In fact, I encourage it. If we can get things perfectly the first time, it's all good. But we're only human, not a Super Intelligent A.I. :D

I dunno. He didn't do anything wrong. Honestly the constant shittalking of MC while sympathizing with Monika is something that genuinely pissed me off. I honestly can't think of any other explanation besides having blatant double standards. People say that Monika's actions were justified by her situation, but no one ever bothered to look at MC's situation. He should have known Sayori was depressed? Sayori was literally hiding her depression from him and admits to it. He should have checked up on her? Maybe, but Sayori had literally told him the day before that it hurts her when people care about her and he had no idea she was suicidal at that point. Not to mention that he's still going through the shock of finding out his supposedly happy go lucky best friend (and possible girlfriend) has struggled with depression her whole life wouldn't know the "right" thing to say to such a revelation. It's ridiculous to expect a teenager in that position to do everything correctly and than act like he's the anti-christ for not having a doctrate in clinical psychology. At least people are much more sympathetic to MC now. Oh and in case any plebs come at me with the "well, MC isn't a real character" argument, that isn't relevant here. If you condemn MC for not magically solving Sayori's depression in an instan, you're giving him the agency of a character, so I'm going to defend him as a character. You can't have it both ways.

I'm actually a little interested in seeing what does the game do in the scene where natsuki makes a pun over monika's name. Because in the english version (and most likely all of the subs), monika reacts by saying that this joke is basically lost in translation, but what does she say when it isn't? :thonking:
I'm hoping that the joke remains in place, they just adjust it for the locality so that they would be translating it into another language (like a joke that makes sense in English but not in Japanese.)
It's still lost in translation. The joke is that Natsuki's "ika=squid" joke doesn't work even if Monika was a Japanese name (mo-ni-ka, not mon-ika). Her name is actually Latin.
but then she will still need to say something different. She will say the part of "that's not how you read my name!" but will she say something about the language?
Marchi March I thought it was possible for a Japanese name to sound like Monica. Like how some Japanese people are named Ken or Ren, which sound like Latin names but are written with the Japanese language. A character in Danganronpa was named Monika. I don't know how her name was written, but she didn't seem foreign.
Tinyfată What he's saying is that Monika is spelt モニカ (Mo-ni-ka), and squid is spelt いか(i-ka). See how it still wouldn't work in Japanese? Taking the i vowel out of the ni sylable is pretty silly, so the joke should translate well enough. cmiiw, I'm just a weeb

SPOILERS Well, seeing that Monika KNOWS the "guy" is actually Ai-chan, Ai-chan is basically roasting herself. (Although we all know that many of us would NOT be saying what the main pro-tag is saying either)
SPOLIERS What I find funny is the fact that Monika in the game believes the protag is a human like a real human form ourworld. Its the ol bait and switch because Monika the AI in the game will be talking to A.I. Chan our worlds A.I. Gamer lol. Itll be very confusing.

Archmage Vengard so do I. I played it 3 times. Watched Family play it 6 times. Watch about 10-15 RUclips's play it. Played the game 8 times with mods. And watched it 5 times with mods.
Truth. You can generally tell what dialogue's going on just based on what Ai is talking about~ Doki Doki isn't all that long when you get down to it, and it reuses whatever it can, right down to the script itself.
Matt and Stephanie did from Game Theory. It just means that Ai-chan has good character judgment. Very keen eye. I am actually a bit concern how she will react to Sayori's issue.
Why, it is just a Japanese AI with English subtitles playing a supposedly originally Japanese VN, "translated" into English, by American creators, then translated for real "back" into Japanese. Just the most normal thing in the world on the internet :P Though considering what happens, I do fear for Ai quite a bit since she is, you know, inside a computer.

NEVER NEEDED A TRANSLATION SO FAST. ...But also was willing to wait because the English community only has so many people, who work very hard, and doing a good job takes time. :)
I mean, a fair number of the games Kizuna plays were developed in America. But they _all_ tend to have a disproportionate number of English comments, because English-speakers are going to be much more interested in seeing Kizuna-san playing those games than they are in seeing her play random games they know nothing about.
First Kizuna catches onto the roaches in the PT demo really quickly. Now in this game, she describes Monika as looking like a "heroine". She's really got an eye, doesn't she? (I also didn't realize how trash the MC is until she brought it up)

I'm actually a little interested in seeing what does the game do in the scene where natsuki makes a pun over monika's name. Because in the english version (and most likely all of the subs), monika reacts by saying that this joke is basically lost in translation, but what does she say when it isn't? :thonking:
I'm hoping that the joke remains in place, they just adjust it for the locality so that they would be translating it into another language (like a joke that makes sense in English but not in Japanese.)
It's still lost in translation. The joke is that Natsuki's "ika=squid" joke doesn't work even if Monika was a Japanese name (mo-ni-ka, not mon-ika). Her name is actually Latin.
but then she will still need to say something different. She will say the part of "that's not how you read my name!" but will she say something about the language?
Marchi March I thought it was possible for a Japanese name to sound like Monica. Like how some Japanese people are named Ken or Ren, which sound like Latin names but are written with the Japanese language. A character in Danganronpa was named Monika. I don't know how her name was written, but she didn't seem foreign.

What he's saying is that Monika is spelt モニカ (Mo-ni-ka), and squid is spelt いか(i-ka).
See how it still wouldn't work in Japanese? Taking the i vowel out of the ni sylable is pretty silly, so the joke should translate well enough.

Well, seeing that Monika KNOWS the "guy" is actually Ai-chan, Ai-chan is basically roasting herself. (Although we all know that many of us would NOT be saying what the main pro-tag is saying either)

What I find funny is the fact that Monika in the game believes the protag is a human like a real human form ourworld. Its the ol bait and switch because Monika the AI in the game will be talking to A.I. Chan our worlds A.I. Gamer lol. Itll be very confusing.

Why, it is just a Japanese AI with English subtitles playing a supposedly originally Japanese VN, "translated" into English, by American creators, then translated for real "back" into Japanese. Just the most normal thing in the world on the internet :P Though considering what happens, I do fear for Ai quite a bit since she is, you know, inside a computer.
