Yeah, that's one of the reasons why I also wanted Rhinestone to win the Patreon poll, and I'm surprised to see that this movie isn't as terrible as "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot".
I’ve been waiting for this review for 5 years, especially for Musical March in September. Also, R.I.P. Norm MacDonald. 1:41- I don't recall seeing this movie listed on Disney+. 7:14- Yeah, after seeing clips of Sly singing in this movie from a supercut video of some of his "best" film moments, this is the main reason I wanted Brad to do a Snob episode of Rhinestone for Musical March in September. 11:19- Yeah, I also fondly remember those commercials. 19:51- That theatre is also showing Two of a Kind, that John Travolta/Olivia Newton John rom-com that's worse than Rhinestone.
If Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder hadn’t of picked ‘Springtime for Hitler’ in The Producers, they would have chosen Rhinestone instead to bomb at the box office and make their money
I am so pleased to be an early comment! I missed seeing your notifications Snob! Glad you are back and had whatever YT algorithm hex you were under lifted! I missed you Snob!
I’ve always known this was a bad movie, but loved it for what it is and it is enjoyable as hell. Stallone should be proud of how funny he is in it. And Dolly Parton is a gem.
Suggestion for next years Musical March in September: The Country Bears In the span of 18 months Disney released three fairly ambitious films based an park attractions it's had since the 1970's. Pirates of the Carribean became a 4 billion dollar franchise with 5 movies, some of them good. The Haunted Mansion was a forgettable whatever movie with a reboot that may be stuck in development hell. ...and the Country Bears just ate a bag of shit at the box office and flopped with most critics. THIS IS PERFECT!!!
Theadora Van Runkle's gowns for Miss Dolly Parton were dazzling. In fact this was their was second and final collaboration in a big-budget film for Disney.
Speaking of Disney+, you'd think Straight Talk would be on there. Don't give two shits about James Woods, seeing more Dolly makes sitting through it worthwhile.
but Tommy is good. The cast is a Who's Who (get it) parade of 70's stars and Elton john got to keep the shoes! plus ken russell's directing combined with whoever the editor was is brilliant.
No wonder Mike Post stayed in TV after this. My main memory of watching this with my Dad is of him going "Good grief" at Dolly's chest. He preferred Stallone's performance by the way.
This was his next to last project as an arranger and conductor before he rebound himself as an TV composer on "Law & Order" and its spin-off, "Special Victims Unit" on NBC.
I was 8 years old when this came out and my whole family watched it opening weekend. All I remember from that time was that I thought Sly Stallone was literally everywhere and that it was cute to see Dolly Parton in a movie as I hadn't yet seen "9 to 5". Seems to me the audience in my little Eastern KY town liked the movie quite a bit. Great video!
Thats because his career wasn't in danger. His contract forced him to do these movies in between the movies funded he wanted to make. I believe he had to do this to get First Blood Part 2 done.
Thank you to The Snob for summing up and explaining this mysterious "Guilty Pleasure" hold this movie has held on me. It's a bad movie, but a bad movie where everyone looks like they're having fun. Stallone also apparently cited Dolly as one of his favorite co-stars to have worked with. He also later joked that it was the movies where he had a great time filming that ended up being his worst movies (Rhinestone, Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.) By comparison, movies like the Rocky series, where he often ended up in the hospital with many injuries, were often his best films.
Its to bad that the song 9 to 5 came out before this feature, considering the lyrics it would be fair to assume she sings about her experience in trying to teach Stallone to sing. Thanks for antoher great musical march in september Snob.
Good morning, Brad, you're looking clean-shaven and definitely sharp because I love that look. So why do you the commentary on Disney's "Rhinestone" on Cinema Snob when I can listen to all the dialogue, effects and music?
Ahh the video store. Those were the days going to the video store on Friday night to pick out some great movies for the weekend!! But seriously I love Dolly. She’s always been good in movies I’ve seen. Sly is just Sly - entertaining most of the time lol
I once listened to Country Music backwards and......... I got my wife back I got my dog back I got my house back I got my job back. I'm here all week peeps.
I just listened to Drinkenstein and Stallone sounded like Glenn Danzig if he became a country singer. I can see him being an Elvis impersonator, but a Frank Stallone he is not.
I'm SOOOOO glad that a bunch of under 20 year olds didn't ruin the selection by voting for that High School Musical spinoff. That would have been a dull video.
I have always loved this movie, so much fun and it just puts a smile on your face. He's not a singer and never will be and that's the point. He just has to survive one night. It's a fun movie!
Loved it too! Sure it's campy and cheesy, but it was friggin' hilarious! And I actually thought Stallone and Parton had really good chemistry. Just keep in mind that it's not meant to be taken seriously--it's really not THAT bad.
Speaking of cowboys and bad guys getting punched in the face while the protagonists are arguing, has Bred ever reviewed a Bud Spencer and Terence Hill movie?
When you referenced My Fair Lady, I imagined Silvester Stallone as Higgins and almost died laughing. I would pay good money to see that version! And Mike Hodges as director? Of Pulp or Get Carter fame? Like wow, that could have been amazing!
I've seen about almost all the movies with Dolly Parton from 9 to 5 to Rhinestone to The Best Little WhoreHouse in Texas and Steel Magnolias and I know she did other movies but the ones I mentioned were ones I saw with her.
Everytime I see Ron Liberman, I keep thinking he's gonna say SAY IT AGAIN like he did a bunch of times in Mad Magazine Presents UP The Academy...a movie Liberman had his name taken off of...and a movie I'd love to see the Snob review!!!
Watched Rhinestone after this review, and have to say I agree that there is definitely a charm to this film. 75% of that is down to Dolly Parton, as she is just so awesome! Stallone for his part does give it his all so fair play to him!
Hi Brad Jones, I'm seeing ads for "God's not dead" 4 saying "only in theatres the week of oct4th , 5th and 6th! just in case the theatres in your town only are showing it for a couple days--i'm not even sure that's a weekend!
"Who can survive Rhinestone? He's not human I tell you!" - Jay Sherman
In the early 80s, my older sister idolized Dolly Parton, and thought Stallone was the bee's knees. She doesn't like to talk about Rhinestone...
hahaha...the bee's knees. now, there's an very old saying.. kudos!
I've never seen this movie, but that Move Over Butter commercial hit like a ton of forgotten childhood bricks!
No movie with Dolly Parton can be considered awful, But she does test us from time to time.
On a related note, how's "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", the movie Dr. Venture mistook for a porno?

This movie is so dumb that I can’t help but enjoy it. No joke, Stallone singing “Tutti Frutti” is actually my cell phone ringtone.

@@SpeedyEric1 well, I mean, Stallone wasn’t tricked into doing this film, it was something he actually wanted to do
As someone from TN. I love dolly no matter her role, because it's basically just her. Plus she just lights up scenes for me. Glad this was chosen!
exactly..she always comes across as just DOWN TO EARTH!
Plus regardless of the movie, she was always a nice singer, to this day she clearly has an established business brand like Paul Newman
MOMMY MILKERS

I can't wait to watch but you really should have waited until October since Sylvester Stallone singing country is a horror movie in my book.
8:24 Richard Masur AND Fred Grandy AND Stallone and the guy in the middle is a character actor too , what a cast indeed.
Too bad The Wiz didn't win because the cliché "nobody beats the Wiz" would be fun to say.
The sexual tension between Dolly and Sly in this one is intense.
