    I will walk you through the swap out of a standard outdoor spigot which is prone to freeze and can cause a massive water leak with a frost-proof outdoor spigot. Front-proof outdoor faucets or also called spigots are standard in any of the northern climates where the on/off valve is located well within the insulated wall. This is the type of repair you would like to make prior to having a huge problem during a cold snap in the winter.

      Thanks for sharing your approach! It's important to prepare for the winter, especially in colder climates like Michigan. Leaving the outside spigot open is a good practice to prevent freezing. Stay warm! ❄🔧

    I would not torque that down from the outside against a copper fitting inside like that. I prefer to solder after the female is on, but if not just mark the top on the other end with a marker and tighten with 2 wrenches inside

    • @DIYPlumbingGuy
      @DIYPlumbingGuy 7 месяцев назад

      Great points! If you're soldering beforehand, removing the rubber valve is a must to prevent damage. And marking the top for proper torque inside is a handy trick. I've noticed that some manufacturers do place their stickers strategically for torque guidance. It's a helpful visual cue. Thanks for adding that detail to the conversation! 🔧

    If your copper line is not braced you stand a good chance of pinching the line in two in between the wall. I ran into that problem and had to break the sheet rock to hold the other end of the copper line because the plumber did not secure it.

    Unfortunately this won't help when you have an exposed crawlspace. So I suggest those folks (like myself) work on insulating your exposed crawlspace pipes and enclose as much if the space as possible to hold in ambient warmth. Also, consider getting a freeze-stop device on the water main line coming into the house.

    Living in Ohio, I've never heard of someone's pipe rupturing like this. I understand the concept, but am curious about the real relative risk even for a place that can get down to -10F every 5 years or so

    • @Bigfoot14000
      @Bigfoot14000 7 месяцев назад

      It doesn't have to get to negative 10 F to have problems. Plenty of freeze-ups in the Pacific Northwest when we have an unusual 15 F for several days running.

    • @fitztastico
      @fitztastico 7 месяцев назад

      @@Bigfoot14000 But is it that the water in the pipe is just frozen or that the pipe actually bursts? I'm just trying to understand the level of risk for my area and whether there's any appreciable risk reduction given the fact that I don't have even anecdotal evidence that anyone I know has ever had a ruptured pipe where this was the cause

    • @Bigfoot14000
      @Bigfoot14000 7 месяцев назад

      Broken pipes for sure. Copper seems to be the most vulnerable, as it will freeze and split every few inches along its frozen length. @@fitztastico

    He put the teflon tape on backwards. SMH

  • @NorthernChev
    @NorthernChev 7 месяцев назад

    ATTENTION VIEWERS: He incorrectly wraps the threads in the WRONG direction (3:31). Do not follow his example. He wraps it backwards, with the “end” of the tape he tears off facing TOWARD (or into) the threads of what will be the female thread when he goes to assemble it. This will cause the tape to unwrap, bunch up, or tear off during installation.

    • @DIYPlumbingGuy
      @DIYPlumbingGuy 7 месяцев назад

      Absolutely, when recording was focused on staying centered of the screen and didn't notice the tape direction. Thanks for understanding, and I'll make sure to be more mindful in the future. Appreciate your attention to detail!
