Salim Studge he clearly states at the beginning that he’s explaining the OPEN Sicilian. It is White who decides whether to go into the Open or Closed Sicilian. Thus the Open Sicilian is a White opening, even though the Sicilian is a Black opening.
Doomguy isn’t the point of this video to help people get better, it would make sense to have it as simple to understand as possible since a lot of chess beginners will watch it

Actually, the hyper-accelerated dragon and the black lion with variations like the lion's roar, the lion's claw and the lion's maw are real names of openings. Not sure about pterodactyls, though.

And I'm here not because of queens gambit but i defeated my brother who used to beat me since my childhood! Now, I'm here to open more gates of my skills😂
White can move queen to A4 at 2:24. If black attempt to threat queen with pawns white can take the pawn at B5 with bishop. If black takes the bishop with the pawn at A6 white queen can take black castle on the way.
High level, Niclas, and very inspiring! It’s an ambitious endeavor to explain the Open Sicilian in less than a quarter of an hour, and I think you managed to give a useful overview to get people started! Makes me want to redouble my own efforts, so thanks again!

Your depth and clarity are easy for a returning novice like me can handle. I look forward to starting from the basics, and moving onwards through your videos. Quite excited to have found your page.
Your English is very easy to understand. It's simply formulated and limited to essentials. Maybe a bit to slow but everyone can comprehend. Content is great as always! :3
Not too slow, most chess RUclipsrs speak way too fast 😅 I am a beginner, and I need a moment to think about the moves. Many videos that are supposed to be for beginners are very frustrating for me
9:34 many times i get this on board and white trades knights... Why is it bad and why am i not able to fully punish? I feel like my bischops (black pieces) are way too trapped after that! I float from 1600/1700
Am I the only one who already knew how to play chess but kind of drifted away from it then watched the queens gambit and then got excited and started to watch yt vids
Great video. I appreciate that you don't rush through it. My recommendation is when you name off the famously known moves to maybe have a title card and display the name as well for three - five seconds.
Imagine the grandmasters which have 5,10 moves PRECALCULATED as they go, to imagine every possible move after theirs in real time... That's crazy, yet the genius do this every single time they play.
Those Wal Mart boards really suck. Was it the glass board with the clear and opaque pieces? I trashed the board , painted the opaque pieces black and made a board out of paneling.
Used to play a lot with my mom as a kid and yes, Netflix reminded me of how I used to love this game. I never had or knew any strategies except: "get the big players out fast"😂...so thanks for your videos!
I was introduced to chess at 8 years old and joined my school’s chess club at 10. I was actually really good to the point where I beat the teacher twice. He even told me and my parents that he was very fond of me and said that I was a great player. My interest in chess began to fade when I was 14 however, most likely due to me going into high school and doing new and other things. That and my school didn’t have a chess club, or didn’t let us make one :( Then, years later, I watched the Queen’s Gambit and now I’m interested in playing chess again, and it’s honestly the best feeling in the world. Although, I’m not as good as I used to be.
Thank you for a very well constructed introduction. Your analysis is very clear and is presented well. Do you plan to post analyses/commentary on the World Championship match games?
I play the Maroczy bind in the Open Sicilian whenever possible. But only because I’ve been told to. Again here I understand that it is an advantage of space and center control however, can’t the white knight just be immediately spooked back by an black c or e pawn thrust? Still not so sure what good it does. Please advise. TY. Great vids, BTW. :)
Im a beginner in chess, and I feel like remembering openings is such a massive part of this game and doing that will take a really long time. Should I focus on maybe 1-2 openings for starters until I get more the hang of chess? I'm really struggeling with creating good positions, which makes me often lose even though I have more or better pieces left, but getting better at openings might help me develop better.
Getting better in chess is getting better at everything from opening to end find a good opening and try to master it but don't just stick to opening do a couple of puzzles and try to remember easy tactics
I play chess since I was a kid, but I decided to study it to get better, so I'm still a beginner (1400 elo) here's my experience: 1 - Like everything else, experience. You get better by simply playing the game. 2 - Play tactics on lichess.net (free) and/or chess.com (limited to 5 per day if you dont pay membership). By solving tactics you'll eventually get better, take less time to think, recognize patters, etc. 3 - Most beginners and low rank players like me play E4 - D5, so learn these openings. The italian and ruy lopez/spanish are by far the easiest and also very strong openings. Learn and play these 2 openings and in couple days you'll be basically playing it withouth even thinking. 4 - Learn the london opening. It is very easy and similar (mirrored) as like the italian and Ruy lopez, however, the majority of us low rank players struggle with this opening, because it starts with D4 instead of E4, so black usually doesnt know what exactly to do. 5 - Like now, keep learning stuff on youtube. I'm focusing on the sicilian as I think I already know pretty well these other openings I have said. 6 - Learn middle/end games. Everything is beautiful and simple during the opening, but after that we all think "ok, now what?" and that's exactly when beginners and low rank players blunder and lose the game. I believe the middle and end game is what makes a good player, because this is when tactics, patters, pawn structure, attack strategy... appears, and where we fuck up our game!
@@Marco..1 wow! Thank you so much for your help! I will do it! And yes, my dad simply taught me how to move the pieces, and that I should start with E4 and then move the horse or bishop, and the rest was all by myself. I have never read a book or anything else! Still, felt in love for this game, so I used to play quite a bit in school (we all were so bad) or internet in early 2000s, then last year I decided to play again, but to actually learn the game! I started around 1100, and in some months jumped to 1200, and now I'm 1400. If I can make to a solid 1500-1600 this year I'm more than happy. And now I'm actually learning the game by watching videos, watching some pros playing and trying to understand their moves, solving puzzles,... I think my next step is what you told me, and know exactly when I should trade pieces, because sometimes I feel like the trade worked better for my opponent than for me. Also, sometimes I feel like I dont have a plan I simply play like 10-15 moves until I find one! And I also struggle thinking more than 4 moves ahead.
Hi, GM Huschenbeth, I am interested to learn some theory behind black defensive positioning. Please would you explain the benefits of the dragon variation of the Sicilian from black standpoint @ 8:24 with the knight on F6 and Bishop on G7.
Ive been playing chess for 5 years and got to championships multiple time in my province in canada and ive never heard of sicilian defense. Ive only heard about it after watching the show.
Great video! Clearly explained and thoughtful. I really like how you explain the reason *why* the pieces are being moved certain ways. Like you say that c5 makes sense bc your contesting white's next move instead of just telling us the moves. That's VERY useful. I'm new and my fav Sicilian is the dragon! I like the name and often times my opponet just forgets about the bishop and I get free pieces. >;)
One more question: if black takes the pawn on D4, in fact white is to late playing the knight i think. Because: what if white plays the knight F3, what if black plays pawn D3? What does white play then?
Why not take the knight on d4 and draw out the white queen early? I notice you didn't even mention it, which tells me it's a bad move, but I'm not clear on why.
If your trying to learn how to play chess, after watching queens gambit, I suggest you don’t use this opening, it is quite complex, it is used in 1500-1600 range, I suggest you use a kings pawn or queen opening, or something very basic and fundamental.
I heard about this is queen gambit. I heard about it before but the queens gambit got in interested in this. I love chess, play it a whole bunch but I’m not great. But it’s videos like this that help me. I know two openings but I can’t even remember there names cause well, I’m terrible with the chess names lol.
I learned how to play chess back when I was 7 but I never did have a book or lessons about it, then fast forward to when I was 16 and I'm playing at a tournament, all the other competitors are discussing about oppenings and stuff, Queens Gambit and Sicilian Dragon Defence were so popular back then (2015-2016), and now I know why they're so hard to beat, I just give up most of the times.
Hi Niclas, I have been studying openings: French Defense, King Indian Defense, Roy Lopez, Caro-Kann and now the Sicilian. How do I pick one or two for white and one or two for black? Thanks.
You are an awesome GM chess player and teacher, but as far as preference as a beginner, it would have been more enjoyable and better from the student side to see the board flipped as if I was black performing the actual Sicilian Defense. I am ofc a beginner so maybe I am missing something? Thanks
NOTE: Sorry about the long post, but the complexities of chess are not subject to brevity. Your videos take me over 30 minutes to view...it will only take 3 minutes, or less, to read my post through. I have hit “Like” on all of your videos (that I have viewed thus far) and just subscribed to your channel. Seems like a fair exchange. Kasparov playing black used the Sicilian so many times that one could spend months studying his games alone (and capture his brilliance.) Could you please review the logic behind using the Sveshnikov variation instead of the Scheveningen, or the Najdorf when Kasparov was playing white, and had to “defend” the Sicilian Defense (does that make sense)? I returned a great book years ago on Kasparov to the library, and now I am confused by my own notes! Note: I am not at all concerned about the color of the board that you use, and think that comments on it are a waste of time. I play along on my favorite board and chess pieces in the 3rd dimension which makes the color scheme and board position irrelevant on your videos. It is your expertise that I want. Most of us old guys have spent hours and hours studying books with those one dimensional tiny chess boards in black and white print long before all of this social media. And, we had to play out all of the possibilities through the parenthetical notations that the author offers on all key moves. You have seen these, I am sure. The author gives the move: 5. Nc3 Nf6...then, offers the 5 or 6 possibilities that white has before move 6! Those notations are long and are imposing for an average player like myself. I have to keep repositioning the pieces as I run through the variations on the variation. You chess geniuses can do this from memory. I have to find my place each time and start from there. It takes so long repositioning the pieces on my practice board, and makes me realize how weak a player I am. With your videos it is so much easier! I have improved my rating because of them. I can pause the video! This is why today’s players are so much better. Can you imagine Anderssen or Morphy using today’s technology in their studies and preparation? KEY OBSERVATION! This is not always a good thing...because of computers today’s players have studied every possible variation and you no longer get to replay actual checkmates through notation. Players always resign...sometimes very early (Bobby Fischer complained about this in one of his masterpieces). We may not have had the Immortal Game. We most certainly would not have had the Evergreen Game. Face it, Dufresne never saw it coming when Anderssen did not allow him to castle, and once again sacrificed his queen and rook, and checkmated him with the same...Be7...move that Kierseritzky fell prey to. If Dufresne had computers there would have never been an Evergreen Game. That would have been a shame.
Please can you talk about Indian defence ? I really learned so good and I learn English .i benefit from you English and your chess experience and skills. I 💖 U

!great video for a beginneri finally i get to learn more about openings THANK YOU SO MUCH
So for black the strongest general approach is a dragon or is that only if white pushes the bind?
solid tutorial! you have a great teaching style
👍👍👍👍👍
👍👍👍👍
Yo wait at 10:40 what happens if black knight c6 captures white knight d4
Thank You, Niclas, for so good explaining the main variants 👍🏼
People acting like chess didn't exist before a netflix series 🙄
What does this defense favor? Black or white?
Or can it be both?
i think you missed smith morra gambit. I don't know if it comes under open scilian
5:08 any1 know what to do if black plays e5?
Did you do any more of these tutorials on the Sicilian defense?
If white plays d4, can black still play f5? Is that still sicilian defense?
What should we do if he plays e5 to counter the knight
Not here cuz of Queen's Gambit, I've just been trying to master the Sicilian ^^; seriously tho, thanks for the detailed vid on Open Sicilian!
is this for white opening or black???
Why not take the knight on d4 and draw out the white queen early? I notice you didn't even mention it, which tells me it's a bad move, but I'm not clear on why.
I like the chess 24 style.
u are doing a great job...there is not any video about all sicilian variation introduction..
how does the move to a6 prevent white to g4?
If your trying to learn how to play chess, after watching queens gambit, I suggest you don’t use this opening, it is quite complex, it is used in 1500-1600 range, I suggest you use a kings pawn or queen opening, or something very basic and fundamental.
that shouldnt deter someone
In Blitz games, I have found moving e4 followed by queen to h5, followed by king Bishop toc4
Why is there no tactical nuke variation?
does anyone know if he made any mistakes or if i can trust this?
Great video. But please say the names of openings etc more clearly. Eg. Can't make out the name of the pawn-Knight- pawn combo on rank 4
do you have the sicilianische Verteidigung auf deutsch?
I heard about this is queen gambit. I heard about it before but the queens gambit got in interested in this. I love chess, play it a whole bunch but I’m not great. But it’s videos like this that help me. I know two openings but I can’t even remember there names cause well, I’m terrible with the chess names lol.
So happy that there are new players trying to learn chess cause of a netflix show. Cant wait to battle u all ^_^
facts
I dont care about the style. Thanks for the Tutorial.
Hey!
How should we proceed in case:
e4 c5 c3 d6 d4 now how should we proceed, please explain the idea ahead the move you recommend as well
Black would probably play d3 or Nf6 instead of d6 after c3
@@jniz1791 thanks man
@@aaravjagatramka4302 no problem when i said d3 i meant d5 btw
Hi Niclas, I have been studying openings: French Defense, King Indian Defense, Roy Lopez, Caro-Kann and now the Sicilian. How do I pick one or two for white and one or two for black? Thanks.
Kann ich das Video auch in Deutsch anhören? Und wie geht das?
You are an awesome GM chess player and teacher, but as far as preference as a beginner, it would have been more enjoyable and better from the student side to see the board flipped as if I was black performing the actual Sicilian Defense. I am ofc a beginner so maybe I am missing something? Thanks
I’m learning too. It’s so much fun. I will play Beth Harmon one day.
Kasparov playing black used the Sicilian so many times that one could spend months studying his games alone (and capture his brilliance.)
Could you please review the logic behind using the Sveshnikov variation instead of the Scheveningen, or the Najdorf when Kasparov was playing white, and had to “defend” the Sicilian Defense (does that make sense)?
Black and White board for my colorblind son who has a problem with seeing different shades of brown?
Very good tutorial
Thank you! Cheers!
Please can you talk about Indian defence ? I really learned so good and I learn English .i benefit from you English and your chess experience and skills. I 💖 U
