My wife died last year but she got saved believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, she taught children for years how to be in heaven by teaching them the gospel. One bright day I will be joined with her as with all the born again believers 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
I love this hymn very much. I'm a very lonely person. Jesus is the only true friend that i have. This hymn reminds me to just seek him in my troubles and when i feel discouraged because He's the only friend that can take care of it for me.

Praise the Lord Jesus Christ for my salvation. I left Mormonism in search of the truth, then on to the philosophers, then on to mysticism, the New Age, and Gnosticism. It wasn't until I was completely broken (Psalm 34:18) 5 years ago at age 28, that I got miraculously saved by God's grace! Praise him for the salvation I don't deserve. Praise God for sealing me with Holy Spirit until the day of Christ's Redemption! Praise him for destroying the mental chaos that plagued my mind and giving me a sound one. Addiction free for me, God is my peace and my refuge and my ROCK! God come quickly!

I know that I may seem "old fashioned" but I'd call myself a "traditionalist". I can not abide the latest in Christian music, that is being sung today. Going to Church these days is more like going to a night club with people in jeans, singing songs with a Christian rock band. This is the Lords House, you enter it reverently and in silence. There is structure to service. This is how I was brought up in Church and I can not change and don't really want to. These wonderful hymns bring back so many wonderful memories. Thanks for posting! joel trevino Joe my suggestion is to look around for another church! I was brought up the way you were and love the old hymns but Billy Graham made a point this morning on a note I saw, we must seek to be with Him and worship Him and have fellowship with His people and be attentive to His presence! I will pray you find a good church home. My church we have 2 traditional services with the hymns and one contemporary service. I have been to both and prefer the traditional but go if inviting others that prefer the other, the important thing is take them and see if they will go to your service and share both with them. We need to reach a lost world and you and I are the light and salt!

+joel trevino Just because you were brought up a certain way doesn't mean it was entirely right, or that it should be the only way of doing things. I was raised by atheists and grew up atheist, and many years later in life I realized I had been doing the wrong thing, I wasn't following the One True God. Church, by the Biblical definition, is any gathering of followers of Christ that is gathered in the name of Christ. Therefore there is no singular meaning of what Church is or should be. I have incredible respect for a lot of the traditional worship music, and it took me a lot while to come around to understanding why it is so important. Same with liturgy and all those other things people my age often call old fashioned. Ritual practice is something that I think has been lost on my generation of Christians, but just because they are walking a different walk, doesn't mean it's an incorrect one.
+rose white The Methodist Church now has a new hymn book with many modern hymns (to learn! some very uplifting 'Singing the Faith' ) Many churches have it, but unless you have a good organist, it is lost to some of us. I have had difficulty here in Shropshire; cannot bear the insensitive music; I am singing something totally different to others. She plays most notes the same length! & won't let anyone else play who happens to be a better organist! (me!) Such is life. So I am not going tomorrow!!! HHuUUMMmph!!!

My friendship with my best friend got strained in 2011, my dad died in 2012, my friendship with my best friend broke in 2012, months later after another friendship broke. I questioned my worth as a person, as a friend. I was sad with the broken friendship than with my dad's death actually - - I thought that they'd be there for me during my grief. I was alone, heart broken and Simon & Garfunkel's I am a Rock reflected my feelings. But this song...this hymn... 2:40 "Do they friends despise forsake thee?" makes my eyes water until now... I learned that friendship (like any relationship) must be offered to God. He made me realize that unrequited love is not for romantic relationship. He made me realize that I should have made Him my friend first before others...

These are SO memorable - all through my childhood - learn all of these hymns - so beautiful words - much these hymns that the new "rock and roll" music in churches now. As a pianist for over 50 years, the old music was feed my spirit!
Old music moves the soul in a way differently. It feels like God. Hillsong does not. I don't like how modern churches are. They are just awful I was shunned too. So modern used for event halls ans family meetings. I don't go to church they are all like thus

As a street evangelist for the preborn baby for Jesus I meet many persons on the sidewalk. The Lord wants me to tell them “You are made in the image and likeness of God. Genesis 1 v 27. This message is counter cultural. The media and entertainment world and the advertising industry tells people “You are too fat, too thin, unattractive. This Good News , that we are made in the image and likeness of God is a radical revelation and message that dispels the darkness of inadequacy. We are special. Repent and believe the Good News.
My beloved mother's favorite hymn. At times I sing it to feel not just a closeness to GOD but also to her who is with the LORD. She took comfort in this hymn during those very difficult times of widowhood & raising two very young daughters, too foolish at that time to understand her sufferings in poverty.
God sees the heart. People say they don’t like modern concert-like Christian worship, well I don’t that much too, but if the people are singing to make God happy and not to impress others with their own skills, then we ought to respect them even if we don’t like it. If they are singing for attention and whatsoever that’s not for God, then we should confront them with care, not anger. I know it’s hard, but we should not be so hostile against them as we are, for Jesus our God came to not just to confront our wrongs, but to change us, with a whole lot of love, into godly people who do things in remembrance of god.
I love this hymn. It sums up just about every part of my life, my successes, my failures but most of all it stresses the necessity for my continuing belief in our dear lord Jesus no matter what or where I am.

I have a rock and roll background. Went to concerts to hear everything from INXS to Blue Oyster Cult, with a little AC/DC and Men at Work on the side. Listened to Rap in the early days, the Doors, the Beatles, Phil Collins, just about everything except country. Never could stand that. When I got saved, I read the verse in the Bible that said: 2 Corinthians 6:17 (KJV) 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, The Corinthian church was imploding...not because of what was going on outside the church, but because they were bringing the outside in. Unfortunately, that is what has happened in today's churches. When I go to certain churches, I am reminded of what I used to be involved in. Unfortunately, church leaders are more interested in pleasing the multitudes than honoring God, and what results is a church that resembles a night club or concert hall. I'm not opposed to all CCM if the words are doctrinally correct. I really enjoy many new songs. I don't live back in the 1800's. But everything should be done and played with the spirit of 'moderation'. You can have some modern Christian music that doesn't have to sound and be sung like the latest Hip Hop video or like AC/DC concert. At the same time, hymns should never be forsaken along with hymnbooks. There are multitudes of songs that teach doctrine and have a wonderful melody. These songs really change lives when you sing them, thinking about the words. They don't just say the same thing over and over and over again.

It was always my understanding that the church of Christ is a/the collected body of believers. Jesus loves all those who accept him and it is his desire to have us who belong to him with him forever. He doesn't want to see anybody lost.
Written by a man of the Brethren faith! Classic hymn. My Grandma and her family grew up in the Brethren church and she said they didnt have a piano until the 1950s. Which was a great deal of controversy within the Church and Elders I guess. Before then was all four part harmony accapella. Pretty cool!
In myself dwells no good thing, that is in my flesh. The good I am apt to do is small and often insignificant especially in the eyes of the world, but when my soul raises to the heights at the hearing of these old hymns I know something good through Christ's Spirit abides in me. There truly is no friend that I can find to compare to the Lord. He abides with me when all else pales in comparison and only He bids me to walk in peaceful green pastures with Him. What love for such undeserving humans. I am so very blessed to hear these old hymns with my failing ears to paint again for me an everlasting Savior that brings to me His wellspring of rejoicing.
I also feel more at home with this "traditional" singing - especially since I can follow the words, and nobody tries to :improvise" with all sorts of linguistic acrobatics. On the other hand a friend of mine told me that they do the traditional songs at the Sunday morning services, and allow the youth to take over at the evening services, and it works wonderfully. The traditional songs bless the one generation as it always has, and the lively music in the evening draws people who have never or seldom been in a church, finding Ghrist and become saved,

My friendship with my best friend got strained in 2011, my dad died in 2012, my friendship with my best friend broke in 2012, months later after another friendship broke. I questioned my worth as a person, as a friend. I was sad with the broken friendship than with my dad's death actually - - I thought that they'd be there for me during my grief. I was alone, heart broken and Simon & Garfunkel's I am a Rock reflected my feelings.
But this song...this hymn... 2:40 "Do they friends despise forsake thee?" makes my eyes water until now... I learned that friendship (like any relationship) must be offered to God. He made me realize that unrequited love is not for romantic relationship. He made me realize that I should have made Him my friend first before others...

My grandmother passed away recently, and she used to love this song. She was an amazing woman, and one heck of an evangelist, so I'm thinking of singing this in her honor.
These are SO memorable - all through my childhood - learn all of these hymns - so beautiful words - much these hymns that the new "rock and roll" music in churches now. As a pianist for over 50 years, the old music was feed my spirit!
Old music moves the soul in a way differently. It feels like God. Hillsong does not. I don't like how modern churches are. They are just awful I was shunned too. So modern used for event halls ans family meetings. I don't go to church they are all like thus

Becky, our church still uses the old hymns..and several do: )..You just have to look harder to find them (they are usually the smaller congregations.....if you dont' mind saying the city you live in, I could research those types of church in your area.

As a street evangelist for the preborn baby for Jesus I meet many persons on the sidewalk. The Lord wants me to tell them “You are made in the image and likeness of God. Genesis 1 v 27. This message is counter cultural. The media and entertainment world and the advertising industry tells people “You are too fat, too thin, unattractive. This Good News , that we are made in the image and likeness of God is a radical revelation and message that dispels the darkness of inadequacy. We are special. Repent and believe the Good News.

My beloved mother's favorite hymn. At times I sing it to feel not just a closeness to GOD but also to her who is with the LORD. She took comfort in this hymn during those very difficult times of widowhood & raising two very young daughters, too foolish at that time to understand her sufferings in poverty.
God sees the heart. People say they don’t like modern concert-like Christian worship, well I don’t that much too, but if the people are singing to make God happy and not to impress others with their own skills, then we ought to respect them even if we don’t like it. If they are singing for attention and whatsoever that’s not for God, then we should confront them with care, not anger. I know it’s hard, but we should not be so hostile against them as we are, for Jesus our God came to not just to confront our wrongs, but to change us, with a whole lot of love, into godly people who do things in remembrance of god.
I love this hymn. It sums up just about every part of my life, my successes, my failures but most of all it stresses the necessity for my continuing belief in our dear lord Jesus no matter what or where I am.

I have a rock and roll background. Went to concerts to hear everything from INXS to Blue Oyster Cult, with a little AC/DC and Men at Work on the side. Listened to Rap in the early days, the Doors, the Beatles, Phil Collins, just about everything except country. Never could stand that. When I got saved, I read the verse in the Bible that said: 2 Corinthians 6:17 (KJV)
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
The Corinthian church was imploding...not because of what was going on outside the church, but because they were bringing the outside in. Unfortunately, that is what has happened in today's churches. When I go to certain churches, I am reminded of what I used to be involved in. Unfortunately, church leaders are more interested in pleasing the multitudes than honoring God, and what results is a church that resembles a night club or concert hall.
I'm not opposed to all CCM if the words are doctrinally correct. I really enjoy many new songs. I don't live back in the 1800's. But everything should be done and played with the spirit of 'moderation'. You can have some modern Christian music that doesn't have to sound and be sung like the latest Hip Hop video or like AC/DC concert. At the same time, hymns should never be forsaken along with hymnbooks. There are multitudes of songs that teach doctrine and have a wonderful melody. These songs really change lives when you sing them, thinking about the words. They don't just say the same thing over and over and over again.

Written by a man of the Brethren faith! Classic hymn. My Grandma and her family grew up in the Brethren church and she said they didnt have a piano until the 1950s. Which was a great deal of controversy within the Church and Elders I guess. Before then was all four part harmony accapella. Pretty cool!

In myself dwells no good thing, that is in my flesh. The good I am apt to do is small and often insignificant especially in the eyes of the world, but when my soul raises to the heights at the hearing of these old hymns I know something good through Christ's Spirit abides in me. There truly is no friend that I can find to compare to the Lord. He abides with me when all else pales in comparison and only He bids me to walk in peaceful green pastures with Him. What love for such undeserving humans. I am so very blessed to hear these old hymns with my failing ears to paint again for me an everlasting Savior that brings to me His wellspring of rejoicing.

I also feel more at home with this "traditional" singing - especially since I can follow the words, and nobody tries to :improvise" with all sorts of linguistic acrobatics. On the other hand a friend of mine told me that they do the traditional songs at the Sunday morning services, and allow the youth to take over at the evening services, and it works wonderfully. The traditional songs bless the one generation as it always has, and the lively music in the evening draws people who have never or seldom been in a church, finding Ghrist and become saved,
