    I have been playing half my life, and I taught myself. Now, I write books to help other people play the kalimba. AND these videos are good too to help people learn to play. MANY of my kalimba songs on RUclips have tablature available for them.

    Yes, it is a good way to meet cool and interesting people, by walking around and playing. I rode the bus for 10 years while playing kalimba, and once a woman asked me to stop because "that music offends me" - I didn't know what that was about, but I did stop that day. I usually played very quietly on the bus, and much louder while walking.
    Glad you enjoy the kalimba!

    I really, REALLY like this instrument. Just discovered it yesterday, quite by accident, when I viewed a Korean jazz singer (Youn Sun Nah) using it to accompany her minor key rendition of My Favorite Things. I'll be buying myself one as soon as I can identify which kind will suit me best. Amazing sound!

    My first kalimba was actually a Treble (17 note), but I didn't like it - then I got an Alto and everything was great. After 20 years, I finally went back to the Treble and modified it to be more like the Alto (with the root note in the bass - that is how the Bb Treble was born) -- SO, enjoy the ALTO, I recommend it to many people. -Mark

    This is the video that introduced me to the kalimba about a month and a half ago. Surfing the net one day, I happened across Mark's web site (I don't remember what brought me there), and discovered this video. It blew me away, and it still does. After seeing this, I just HAD to get a kalimba of my own. So, I ordered one from Mark. I've now been playing mine almost every day since then, and am thoroughly enthralled with it...

    For an experienced musician, the Hugh Tracey Alto (this kalimba) will probably be a great instrument for you - unless your hands are small, then the Treble will fit your hands better. If you are on an economy budget, I can recommend less expensive instruments (Catania 12 Note Gourd kalimba comes to mind). - Mark

    Swing is easy on kalimba - if you are doing
    a strick R-L-R-L-R-L pattern (or leaving out some of those notes), swing is achieved simply
    by shifting the global timing of the L w.r.t R.
    I use the thumb flesh to dampen a ringing note
    before striking it again - the "click" of attack is, in part, the sound of the thumb nail slapping back - that can be reduced by having shorter thumb nails or stiffer nails
    (super glue).

    The "swing" is the key -- it is a subtle swing. If "playing straight" is signified as "50", this is swinging at about 56 or 58. 67 is a shuffle
    (12 3). Some drum machines quantize swing this way, from 50 to 100 (100 meaning the second note
    in each pair gets no time at all).

  • @kalimbamagic
    @kalimbamagic  13 лет назад

    Well, it IS a musical instrument.
    The paradox - anything you play will sound nice, but if you are willing to work, you can spend your whole life getting better each day.
    But attaining the skills - that is what my Kalimba Magic web site is all about.
    -Mark

  • @kalimbamagic
    @kalimbamagic  11 лет назад

    Yes you can retune. Currently this very kalimba is in the key of F (every tine was pulled down a whole step). You can also retune by going around the cricle of 5ths - ie, add a sharp to change from G to D.
    Search RUclips for: "Kalimba Tuning"

  • @kquicker
    @kquicker 17 лет назад

    ... I'm actually trying to learn this song, and can now play the first 45 seconds of it fairly proficiently. Just today, I had a bit of a personal breakthrough, and got the "swing" of the more complex central part of the song, and have been improvising on it. It's a blast just tinkering with this instrument. It's easy to play something right off the bat that sounds pretty nice. My 4-year-old son (who now hums the tune to "First Look Inside") doesn't even sound bad on it...

    This kalimba is tuned to G major, with F#.
    BUT this song is being played in B minor -
    (the very first note of the song is a B). B minor
    usually has a C#, while the kalimba in G has a C natural. The C tines are avoided for most of the song, but it is played sometimes, like in the intro, the 3rd note played on the left side (the 7th note of the pieces) is a C.
    -Mark

  • @kalimbamagic
    @kalimbamagic  13 лет назад

    This is the standard tuning - two octaves in G major, alternating note layout. I am playing in B minor (phrygian, though I stay away from the C most of the time), a mode of the G major scale.
    The painted tines help me navigate the notes mainly - will send you a link to a recent newsletter article!

  • @kalimbamagic
    @kalimbamagic  13 лет назад

    That is true - this issue is addressed in the Kalimba Magic newsletter article that provides the tablature for this song.
    Basically, I am an improvisational player, so even on a song that supposedly has a "correct way" for me to play, I can't help making new things up - and those one time new things are then difficult to capture identically in the tablature, as they are more or less irreproducable. -Mark

    I use my nails as a pick. I first touch the tine with my thumb flesh to deaden any vibration that might be still going on, and then slip my thumb nail off the edge of the metal tine. You can also do a glissando (drag the nail across the tine).
    You should be aware that not all kalimbas are created equal - the Hug Tracey kalimabs are really fine.
    - Mark Holdaway

  • @kalimbamagic
    @kalimbamagic  17 лет назад

    My first was a TREBLE, but I didn't connect with it. I got an ALTO and loved it - it has lower notes, a mellower sound, wider tines (easier to play), and exactly 2 octaves in G major, starting on the root (easy to wrap your head around).
    Now my favorite IS a TREBLE (ie, Christmas Medley) - but altered so the root is in the bass. The higher pitch soars over guitars and DRUMS.
    I recommend: start on ALTO, unless you have small hands.

    The Chromatic can be set up in two ways (well, MANY, but I sell it in two standard setups): the C setup with key of C on the front and Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb = F# on the back - some musical purists prefer it this way. The G setup with key of G on the front (G A B C D E F#) and "flats" on the back: F (the flat of F#), Bb, Eb, Ab, Db. SO the G setup plays First Look Inside just fine. I sell 75% G and 25% C.

    The Hugh Tracey ALTO kalimba 15 cm x 20 cm x 5cm - though the same notes come in a board-mounted version which fits into a box that is
    14cm x 19 cm x 3cm. That one is the "Hugh Tracey Celeste Alto Kalimba.

    Beautiful song, I love the thumb bends you throw in there, just awesome.
    MY dad played the Kalimba and this brings back some great memories, thank you!
    I'm inspired to get one of my own and start practicing!
    Play on! Love and Light

    A contact pickup works. It will not capture the air vibration modulations you get when you cover/uncover the sound hole. For the reason I prefer using a mic. On the other hand, a contact pickup or drum trigger will be great if you want to play with a loud electric band or drums, and it is wonderful fun to play through digital delay.

    THE TUNING is the standard G major tuning. The song is in B minor, but requires no retuning from the standard tuning.
