I've got the EF 85mm f1.2 and This RF 85mm f2 And although yes the 1.2 gets some beautiful shots. The RF is so much quicker! The photos came out great every time. The RF STM line up is so good. Getting the L lenses when your budget is tight is SILLY because the STM lenses are just quality. More reliable and faster for me. The modern RF L series might be quick too (I dont know) but the STM lineup is just a bargain bang for the buck. Even though Canon sucks now due to banning third party and I will probs go back to Sony and wish I went with Sony for my first full frame.
You make some great points, Bryan. I actually sold this a few months back and now I own the EF f/1.4 85mm IS L USM. I had never shot with a 1.4 aperture and I just love spoiling my clients. I went with the 1.4 over the 1.2 because I am a stabilization fiend. I, too, dislike Canon banning third-party lenses, but do not blame them for doing so. I am sure they want to reap the benefits of their innovation.
Is it worth it in 2024? I just got a new R8 and I'm thinking of buying the 85mm. Can you please advise if there's a new version or any alternative companies now?
@@walkkwithhme my videographer for weddings just got his hands on it and he swears by it. It’s an amazing lens for the price. The f/2 aperture is definitely more than plenty for background separation, it features a decent amount of Macro capabilities and is even stabilized. You can’t go wrong with this purchase. There’s always the f/1.2 version but that’s gonna be a pretty penny compared to this. Sigma and Tamron don’t yet have access to the RF mount so it’s your best bet at the moment. Great detailed review. Absolutely agree with everything you’ve commented on. I own this lens and it is probably one of the most amazing lenses on my R6. This lens and the RF 70 to 200 F2.8 are I believe Canon‘s most sharpest lenses.

Thank you so much for stopping by and your comment. If your main subject matter is toy photography, I would recommend the 85 mm over the 50 mm because of its macro capability. You want to get as close to your toys as possible. When doing so, switch into manual mode so you can get closer to your subject. Hope this helps!
Thank YOU for watching, Vítor. I actually mentioned in the video that this is mostly due to user error; Canon made a focus switch for distance so that you can actually control how far you would like for the AF to travel when you're shooting a particular style of photography. If you do NOT set this according to what you're trying to capture then it will SEEM like the AF is slow and inconsistent. Remember to use this switch!

@@FranciscoAlvarezTV Hi. I have this lens now (since 3 days ago :-) ). My experience so far is that when the switch is at 0,5m to infinity, the AF works great. But when it is at 0,35-0,5m (for macro photos, mostly), it works awfully. Fortunatelly for me this is no problem when trying Macro, as focusing manually is part of the fun :-). But people should know this.

What do you think about using this on the Canon R50? That would make it a 136mm. Should I get this or go with the RF50 which will give me an equivalent of 80mm and 1.8?
Great question! If versatility is what you’re after I’d definitely go for the 50mm. On the other hand, if you’re after a portrait look 24/7, you’d be hard pressed not to go for the 85mm. It all depends on what you shoot. Can’t take a cookie cutter approach.

I personally chose to invest in the Rokinon 85mm f/1.4. I really wanted weather sealing as I live in Canada. Another worry of mine with this lens was the slow autofocus as it is macro. With that being said your shots are great 😊 and 85mm is 85mm is 85mm. 🤩
I almost pulled the trigger on that one but, like I said: I value IS over weather sealing as its almost always sunny or overcast here in Puerto Rico. Not something I really have to worry about. Hey, Francis. Does your lens wobble when move it fast? I felt that mine was a bit loose inside and don't know if that's normal from the lens or damaged.
Completely normal. That’s the stabilizer inside. Not damaged at all. If it’s excessive then it’s a concern. I now have the EF 85mm f/1.4 and it does it even more. Should be more noticeable when the lens isn’t attached to the camera.
Very nice lens, strong on optical quality, not as strong on autofocus. Generally, autofocus performs well, however it can be a bit troublesome when gaining focus in macro mode or when quickly changing from close up to far away. Overall a very good lens at a reasonable price.
My pleasure. Truth be told I sold mine to cushion the blow of the more expensive zooms because I needed them over primes for weddings but I’ll be getting another here pretty soon.

Actually, it *is* as good as L glass regarding image quality...on an R7. Great lens for astro, as it is pinpoint sharp corner to corner, even at f/2.0, which I was not expecting. I can't speak to full frame, but on a crop sensor it's stunning.

If you're going to shoot action, stay with sony. If portraits and weddings, either is fine. Landscape, stick with sony. Canon would be my choice for portrait photography

Im a sports photographer and my A9 has a stack sensor which is nice so the volleyball doesn't look like an Easter egg when it gets hits hard. I have friends that shoot canon and they love it. I actually own fujifilm and canon as well. To be honest, I like all 3. I'm using my canon for portraits with only 1 lens. 85mm 2.0 macro. It's crazy sharp. And my Fujifilm is a crop sensor I use when traveling. It's very lightweight but packs a punch. The color science for all 3 are spectacular!!

Great video. One criticism is if the lens is under 500 grams, don’t write that it’s 500 grams. I know it’s niche, but ultralight backpackers are measuring down to the gram.

Thanks for video review. Using RF 85mm f/2.0 Macro IS STM on Canon R10 in video mode, when lost the focus, it is very slow to find focus back again.
Make sure to set the focusing parameters on the side of the lens so that stops from happening!

Great video. One criticism is if the lens is under 500 grams, don’t write that it’s 500 grams. I know it’s niche, but ultralight backpackers are measuring down to the gram.
