I’m a metalsmith and wrote a blog years back bashing on gold plated jewelry… basically calling it crap ( in nice terms). I had a few people write on my page crabbing at me about what I wrote! They said they worked with gold plated jewelry and that it’s good quality and lasts a long time and that I should be ashamed of what I wrote!!! Well needless to say I stopped writing about it… but I still hate crappy gold plated jewelry.
Gold filled is a better quality than plated gold and does come in different karret type. I'm a small precious metals refiner using chemical analysis to purify, and I see a lot of markup for the actual reality of what's been purchased.
The base metal actually is super important. Brass yes it turns green but it cleans easily and retains a gold hue. It blends with fill well. I have 3 solid brass rings that are beautiful. Copper harder to clean and keep pink, turns color easy and is ugly. Silver... I've never gotten a gold plated silver I trust. Gold over brass or straight brass is great. The green, cleans with washing your hands and looks like gold. (Wearing a brass bracelet I've had on for years). It matters!
Interesting that you mentioned wearing solid brass - I saw some pieces that look great obviously since it's yellow and looks like gold, but I was upset about the way it oxidizes. So from your experience it actually doesn't matter? Wouldn't every wear during summer and other sweaty months cause new oxidation that needs to be removed? That sounds like a lot of polishing
Thank you for this information ☺️ I'm in the process of getting an online shop up and going and I wanted to start with small items like chains and jewelry to start and this was very helpful and informative for me! Thank you ❤️
Hey love, Thank you for your video, it answered a lot of questions for me! I do have a question though. I am new to making jewelry and my biggest issue is finding a reputable vendor that sells quality gold filled items to create jewelry with. There are a lot of videos about teaching you techniques and sharing a wealth of knowledge about the different types of metals, but no one is willing to go the extra mile and help with good vendors. Are you willing to supply a good vendor for gold filled products? Thank you in advance.
Actually it does matter, 4 wks vs 8 wks. The gold filled chain probably wouldn’t look as bright. I’m not sure why folks in Etsy are charging exorbitant prices for their gold filled beaded bracelet. They have no overhead & it doesn’t take much time to thread the beads.
I didn't know they still made gols filled chains wtc. I had a gold filled 5millimeter 24 inch rope that I found way back in tenth grade 1980.I wore it everyday for five months and it never faded I lost it.. 😡My cousin had a chain that was pretty but it was gold plated and after about six weeks it turned black
Hi there! I really appreciate this video thank you! I have been trying to invest more in my jewelry collection and be purposeful with the metals I am choosing. Gold filled it is!
Thank you for breaking that down. I often wondered why I would get this burning feeling after wearing jewelry that was supposed to be gold. Now I know that gold plated is the lowest grade of gold jewelry you can wear and I’m allergic to the metal itself underneath. Or having a reaction to it.
Items plated with gold or silver will wear off when warn often. I dislike gold plated jewellery. I would never buy it. I have some old pocket watches that are gold filled. I keep them maintained because the are excellent antique watches. As for myself I buy rings and bracelets that are pure gold, and not filled. My wife and I have pieces ranging from 10K to 18K. Expensive, but worth the investment.
Perfect thank you! I got my gold filled chain and compared to my gold filled wire it’s so different. But the times will eventually match once they’re worn!
Hi! I bought handmade goldfilled rings from a shop on Etsy. They have these messy solder lines on them. She tells me to polish it with a pad. That works... For about three seconds. And then darkens again. Any advice on what ro do with it? I'm just so sad our wedding rings are not as pretty as should be. We wanted to wear them for as long as possible.... :(
Hi. Thank you for this informative video. Where do you usually buy your beads? The gold filled seem to be way more than the gold plated. Is there a place where you can get them on the cheaper side?
I bought gold plated silver items from Pandora, thankfully straight from the factory so it was affordable and it oxidizes even without any wearing. I just kept it in my closet and within months the silver managed to darken the surface somehow 😬 I'd never ever buy anything silver related after that 😱
All you need is a polishing cloth for sterling silver jewelry and it'll look brand new. You can get air tight plastic pouches for silver to prevent oxidation too.
@@ced214 had my gold filled chain for 18 months now, i clean it regularly.. just purchased another one and its still just as shiny as my 18 month old one.. just try to keep them clean and they should last along time
Correct! Plus you also have to consider the base metal. She kept mentioning copper and brass and those 2 are major culprits for becoming green. Gold plated using stainless steel as the base metal doesn't tarnish. Also I was waiting for her to talk about the different karat levels.
you lost me on the gold-filled. what is 5% gold, the base or the layer? you weren't clear on that. you probably need a script. also, you say verme, then plating, "this" is cheapest. what is the antecedent of the word "this", verme or plating? again, a script will help you communicate clearer.

Where did you get that brass jewelry ?
@@glacialimpalausually you just need to put it in a foil pan with hot water and baking powder for 2 or 3 mins. It’s almost cleans itself.

Good video! Thank you for explaining this because many ppl don’t know the differences with metals.
Thanks for the video. Funny thing is I was wondering about the difference this past weekend after seeing a video!

Gold filled material isn’t cheap to buy though

Whe you say pure gold, do you mean solid gold? Also, I’ve seen gold dipped advertised. Is that considered gold filled?

When is the men line coming to your business?
My goldfilled necklace is slightly magnetic and has white metal underneath. Is this still considered goldfilled? It is marked 1/20 12k gf. Thanks!
I think what you meant to say is solid gold not pure gold cuz only 24k solid gold is pure gold, even 18k and 14k solid gold aren’t pure gold
Hi I have gold plated right now when it turns silver is it possible to make it “gold filled?” Thanks
I love your glasses! Where are the frames from?
I have gold filled jewelry that still turns black. Is it my skin? I'm confused.

Swear I didn't read "beads." "Breasts" are so much more interesting lol

Silver oxides when you don’t wear it but all you have to do is clean it and it is good as new. Silver like gold can last a lifetime

Loved your explanation on this!! 💖
Do you think it's weird to buy a necklace to my mom, with my mom and dads name on it? they are both married and its for her birthday.
Can you wash the gold-fill just like you would a pure gold chain?

So helpful! Thank you!!!
What about gold bonded?
this video was so helpful.. answered my question! thank you so much
What about stainless steel made with gold will it turn to
yes after a year
Gold plating do not turn your neck green you have to learn where you shopping at you just got to be smart about it

very informative
5% of gold fill only needs to be 10k or better. Not 5% pure gold. From what I understand. Thanks
