      It’s certainly not nuts and I think that type of collectivist mindset is common in armed forces all over the world. My first day of military service we were tasked to put our kit together. We were given a specific number of seconds to fasten each item. I was really fast, finished fast and felt great about myself. When the time was up, the recruit on my right was still struggling. The sergeant came up to us. With a blank expression he told the other recruit “continue” then he just stared at me. “Why did this recruit fail to complete his task on time?”
      I didn’t know what to say so I just said the first thing I could think of “he just wasn’t fast enough sergeant” The way the he looked at me told me instantly that I was somehow an idiot but I didn’t understand why I was an idiot. Then he told me “This recruit failed to complete his task on time because YOU didn’t help him. You failed your teammate. I can’t make a soldier out of someone who just looks out for himself. Never, ever fail your teammate like this again.”
      That lesson stays with me. I’m that guy who always asks his colleagues if there’s something I can do to help the team whenever I have a second to spare. Even as a civilian. And that’s why I love working with people who’ve at least gone through basic.

    Roughly 5500 coastal rangers have been trained since the beginning in 1956/57, when the Coast Artillery Close Quarters Battle School merged into "Kustjägarna" (/"Coastal Rangers").
    Divers were specialized in long range covert recon/sabotage, roughly 160 these have been trained.
    The navy hade their own combat/attack divers until 1983, so for a few decades we hade two separate schools for attack/combat divers.
    The rangers have to earn both the green beret and the trident, in different tests, were emphasis are on long marches w/ heavy rucks (mine usually weighed ~65kgs + ~30kgs assault vest/weapon/ammo/etc) with no sleep and several tasks, distance canoeing, speed marches, survival and SERE training (introducing soviet interrogation techniques), distance swimming, assault courses...and so on.
    The KJ conscripts were all volounteers, because of the extremes of the training (like the parachute rangers).
    Conscription lasted 15 months (ranger squad leaders) or 10 months (rangers).
    Until 1990, the coastal rangers formed 8 independent ranger companies, which were deployed all along the 2700km long coastline, some far up in the arctic regions.
    In 1990, 6 Amphibious Battallions were formed, each with 2x Ranger Companies, 1 Mortar Coy and other elements including attack/combat divers, Hellfire missile platoons, staff- and mine platoons.
    Later the AMFBATs were reformed (Org 2010), the ranger companies were reduced and more specialized in recon/sabotage (classic commando tasks) and the assault/raid tasks were assigned to Amphibious Rifle Coys, similar to USMC.
    From 2014, the conscription was scrapped, and the swedish defense was professional only, and to apply to the rangers you needed to have been employed for at least 2 years.
    In 1994, a desicion was made, in typical swedish manners, where no one should be 'better' than any other, the trident was moved from the beret to a piece of cloth on the shoulder (which can be seen in your video).
    And somewhere along the way, the green beret went to be only a piece of cloth on the head on those who served in the marines, not everyone had to pass the tests, which kind of diluted its value.
    I was on KJ -94, the last rangers with the trident in the beret.

    As someone who has met several Kustjägare/Coastal Rangers in real life I can safely say that some of the facts in this video are wrong (and some are correct!).
    1. Back in the days of universal consciption you could apply to the Costal Rangers without having served in the armed forces. That has now changed. Perhaps to make the unit more professional.
    2. The green beret with the trident was the unique insignia for the Costal Rangers. It was later changed to the Viking 'Thorleif' which is universal for all serving in the Amphibious Regiment (after completing Exercise Amfibie of course). The trident is now either worn on on the right arm as a shoulder patch or on the chest of the mess dress.
    3. If the Trident has its forks turned inwards when on the mess dress it means that the person is a qualified Combat Diver.
    4. In the days of the Coastal Artillery there was no mobile marine units until the creation of the Coastal Rangers. Their mission was to eject any foreign invaders from islands that had been taken over. A common saying is/was that a Coastal Rangers life-expectancy was somewhere around 2 minutes.
    5. There are two green berets within the Swedish Armed Forces. The lighter green (commando green) one belongs to the Amphibious Regiment. A more dark green one is a universal beret for cavalry (light, mobile units) within the armed forces (such as the 31st Air Assault or the Army's Ranger Battalion).

    Oh dear. So many errors.
    The year the coastal artillery was formed was correct. And yes, the Coastal Rangers were formed in 1956, but the attack divers formed in 1955 were the Navy attack divers, and not Coastal Ranger divers. These divers were modelled on the US Navy UDT/SEAL to perform underwater demolitions. They were officially disbandend in 1981, I believe. The Ranger divers were formed after the British SBS. The Rangers themselves were, as mentioned, heavily inspired by the Royal Marine Commandos, and there have been frequent exchanges between the Swedes and the British, but also the Dutch Marines.
    Furthermore, the Amphibious Corps were derived from the six amphibious battalions, which in turn were a further development from the coastal artillery barrage battalions (spärrbataljon) who used missiles and mines to defeat enemy landing craft. The six amphibious battalions each consisted of five companies: Amphibious Coy. which used a land-based version of the Hellfire missile, and a modular anti-ship mine called the M9 mine. Command/HQ-coy. Included a recce platoon (attack divers. At the time, the only component that deployed snipers) and a surface to air-missile platoon. Mortar Coy. Derived from the Coastal Ranger mortar platoon to provide indirect fire support for the Coastal Rangers. And finally, two Ranger companies for assaults, direct action and reconnaissance.
    With regards: A former Kustjägare/Coastal Ranger of the 1990s.

    • @andersnoren6070
      @andersnoren6070 5 лет назад

      @@FtdFacts No worries, mate. Yeah, the Navy divers were trained on Märsgarn island and focused on underwater sabotage and demolition, while the Ranger divers were trained for reconnaissance and direct action on land. The Coastal Rangers and Parachute Rangers were the closest we ever got to having Special Forces untill the predecessor to SOG (SSG) was formed in 1994, but were never considered as such. However, there was an interim unit called Jägarbefälsgruppen (Ranger Officer Group) that eventually evolved into the SSG, but that's a different story.

    About the non ranger parts of the amfibious regiment, The "amphibious riflemen" or "amphibious assault unit" there were suport units that was able to deploy a platoon (team) of 81.4 mm mortars on mostly any island in the archipelago outside Stockholm using kayaks as the mean of transportation. Most of the marching tests was made with all the groups equipment wich meant that the mortar platoon did hauling their mortars in those tests... The most common reason to medical dismiss was ofcourse busted knees...
    During the conscrpit days all the navigators and boat drivers of the combatboats were drafted from young men living in the archipelago, wich meant that they could navigate that archipilago in pitchblack, storms and when drunk silly. The info about the divers are incorrect. They were originally organized under the Navy and had operational tasks equivilent of the US Navy Seals. The Navy hade Combat Divers (A-dyk) and Navy UDT (Underwater Demolition Team. In Sweden: Röjdykarna, R-dyk). The UDT remains under the Navy organisation and are assigned to Mine Warfare-segment of the Navy. A-dyk transferred as organisation to the Kustjägarna in early 80ies and became a special segment of that branch. The recriutment for A-dyk is made from the KJ. A-dyk being more of a SF-unit. The Navy for a period had another elite unit under their hat in Bassäkerhetsförbandet (Bassäk), who were tasked with security missions within naval war bases, deploymentzones and supply areas. In 2006 the Bassäk were merged with the swedish military police security squadron and segments of the Amfibiekåren into a more general purpose security force operating on land, airborne and at sea.

    I did my military service in the swedish costal artillery in the early 90s. The name costal artillery was very much a misnomer by then, kept mostly for historical reasons I guess. We did not have anything to do with artillery. We were more like a cross between a marine corps and the Navy. I myself did my service onboard a mine laying ship as a crewman.

      same here. did my basic training with stab/grk amfibiebataljonen but we belonged to the minelaying division. then transfered to 12/80 rörligt in karlskrona as a cook. then back to ka4 guthenburg on a minelayer/transport ship. after that to 200 boats. i was part of the biggest marine excersise, hummern, 96 which validated the 5th amphibic battalions combat value as a cook on the staff/grenade launcher compani.

    Correction, it wasnt until some time in the 2000s when they granted any Amfibian Soldier or member of the corps to wear the Green beret, I was in the corps in 2004 & only those who completed the specific exercises & requirements were granted the beret & allowed to wear it with the Thorleif badge, several officers & such did not have the beret & many were not allowed to do the tests/exercises due to the health risks involved despite them making it to the corps.

    • @DeathWithinTenSteps
      @DeathWithinTenSteps 6 месяцев назад +1

      And most units will not let a soldier wear it if said tests aren’t completed. Personnel in administrative positions and the like wear the beret when they’re required to wear uniform. But as a soldier on a platoon your team won’t accept that you wear the beret without proving yourself. I went from the army (in the good ol’ days when you had to earn the beret) to the amphibious corps (when the beret was just handed out as a sign of where you were employed) and no one wore it until they had completed the utbildningskontroll (the old beret test or beret march). Thinking back I realize that I’ve walked an insane distance for the berets that I have.

    • @Armathor333
      @Armathor333 6 месяцев назад

      I cant remember if it was exercise "Amfibie" or "Thorleif", but the marching was 150 kilometers minimum alone, and the marching was the easy part.

    A couple of left out facts, and some small errors. Since Sweden has a very long history compared to young nations like the US or Canada all our regiments and units also have a very long history.
    Over all a good vid. I’d just like to add that the coastal rangers are in a way the youngest ranger unit in the Swedish armed forces. And if talking about the first Swedish special forces unit there’s a lot that can be said about infantry units during the 1600s who worked in small groups using guerilla tactics.
    But to most Swedes who’s served in a ranger unit (Jägarförband) the first “modern” Swedish special forces unit was the I19 skidlöparbataljon. I write modern in citations as the term special forces has been used (internationally) to describe a lot of different types of units during the last 30 years. For the last 20 years or so it’s been used to describe a special operations force that is also a strategic resource. So by definition, no Swedish ranger unit is SF. They are however special operations capable and have a lot of joint exercises with the current units organized under SF.
    I think it’s also worth noting that the amphibious corps overall are trained mainly in small units and that they have a lot of different specializations but they all have very high demands compared to most military units. So the demands you listed for Kustjägarna is a very small part of the total demands placed on them. And what you left out is that these demands are put to the test when they are starved and sleep deprived, having done forced marches and the like for daaays.
    The “basic” amfibieskyttekompani or amphibious infantry rifle company is made up of soldiers that are very physically fit and highly motivated volounteers with a very high level of autonomy. As a ranger I’ve had numerous combat exercises where these dudes have served as the enemy. They’re not fun to face in direct action. An infantry unit whose tactics at a moments notice shifts to guerilla tactics and back again… without them tiring even after a week of sleep depravation and starvation, in the rain, sea and harsh winds of the archipelago. They are an absolutely horrific enemy. Respekt till amfibiekåren!

Green Barets are worn by all the different special Rengers Regementen. In addition to parachute ranger, their are red. The toughest special band Sweden had Var Lapland Rangers, they were the best in the mountains environment. They were trained in mountainclimbing. Detars Barets was also Green when they were Rangers. Their bar test was to go with 50kg packing a stretch of 28 swedish mil. in 4 days and then climbing Kebnekaise. The last march day was to shoot and then jump up to the regiment.

    7:23 "They also have a modified FN Minimi that they call the KS 90"
    Incorrect on two counts...
    1) Its name is "Kulspruta 90" or KSP 90
    2) The image you are showing shows the Swedish FN MAG version dubbed the KSP-58B, which has been adopted in its Swedish variant internationally because it is a massive improvement. Not even the M240 can compete.
    On a side note, the FN FNC (AK5) is an AK5C, the "third" iteration (though they skipped over the B variant)
    And the G3 (AK4) is actually a G3A3 with only a few modifications.

      @Henrik Hempel no they're not, seals are naval assets. US Marines while also a department of the navy technically, this goes way back to Marines guarding naval ships which they still do. The navy also provides medics which are called Corpmen. The Marines are their own force complete with air and ground and theater level transport, but missing global transportation which is generally but not always provided by the Navy. Jay Close was born in New York, grew up in California, and has lived in France, Australia, and even Papua New Guinea. He worked as a chef for the Rolling Stones and later managed several restaurants in Moscow. Now, Jay raises goats and makes cheese in the countryside near Moscow, where he has built his home for over 30 years. Another emigrant is Chad Hower, who was granted political asylum in Russia after being persecuted by the CIA in his home country.
