The amrican equivalent to these guys would be something like the US Army Rangers, so it's not really basic infantry, it's more of an elite infantry unit focusing on guerrilla warfare fighting in small groups behing enemy lines to disrupt the enemy as much as possible.

Hey mate, never thought I'd see this. I used to work at AJB (Arméns Jägarbataljon), the battalion displayed in this video, and even did a tour abroad with them. I figured I could share some info on the topic. "Jägare" (meaning Ranger/s in english) are operating behind enemy lines, pursuing sabotage, recon, and leading airstrikes and artillery. It is, like the narrator says, the Army's most prominent unit for combat behind enemy lines. Although AJB is considered light infantry, its roots are cavalry, as back in the days they relied on horses. Hence, the soldiers there are also called "Dragoons". Also, if you take a closer look on the batch/tab they wear on their arm (not sure if visible in this video), you can see it's similar to the "Ranger tab". AJB have had exchanges with the 75th Army Rangers since the 70's, and when the first officer from AJB in Sweden went and did the Ranger Course, he saw many similarities and decided to make a similar tab to the "Jägare", however with the inscription "JÄGARE". Since then many officers have gone through the Ranger Course. To become a "Jägare" is one of the toughest courses in the Swedish Army. Despite all the action in the video, most of the time it's just miserable, dark and cold., since that is AJBs best weapon - shit conditions. The weather close to the Arctic Circle is what make these guys tough, not their biceps (although doing disco-sets in the gym is important). Best

Jaegers (hunters in english) are self sustained units, ment for long range recon, Guerilla warefare and sabotage. Attacking enemy supply caches and gathering points behind enemy lines. And to tie up resources to root them out, Decreasing the enemies frontline capabileties. They also have forward observer capability to guide in artillery or CAS. Re. opening sequence, translation: the jaeger battalion is there to supplement army brigade combat (highest level of army combat trained for in the Swedish army up until recently).
Re. AT4 volley-fire sequence: probably defensive drill against armored threat (IIRK infantry combat manuals state more than one shot to kill/disable IFV/MBT - so this is definitely not a "defend against insurgents"-scenario.)
Re. "Jaeger" - germanic for "hunter", historically to denote the European King's/Monarch's need for skirmish/raid troops often recruited from mountain-tribes/nomadic horse people and over centuries stylized to "Jaeger"-name to define the purpose and specialized tactics of essentially regularly recruited troops from more homogenous populations within the nationstate borders (when tribes and rural populations diminished).
Re. AT4 and Carl-Gustaf - both are in use with Swedish armed forces. US utilization of AT-4 was kind of outside the designated purpose of the weapon - in Swedish use it's always been "near-exclusively" meant to defeat armor. CG was always, from 1948 really, designated for multi-purpose use. So, the US finally caught up with how to use the CG and returning AT-4 to its original purpose... :)
Re. Bent caps - style... just style. ;)
Re. ghillie suit - specialized fabric with IR-defeating capabilities.
Re. assault rifle and SAW optics - Aimpoint exclusively.
Re. winter camouflage - it's coveralls put over your BDU, the "M90"-style uniform - keeps the logistics burden down a bit.
Really enjoy your review videos. :)

When I was in the service, we were taught that three hits from the AT4 was enough to disable an IFV, while an MBT would need five. Also in my experience the AT4 is a squad-level weapon, meaning every infantryman will be trained with it. While the GRG is for specialized units. Least that's my experience from some ten years ago.

I remember talking with my dad about the Jaegers, and he mentioned how the way they fight is way different from the regular army. When he did his compulsory military service in the late 70's the 'rule of thumb' were that the regulars would spend 60 days in the field on exercise and 300 at the regiment, while the jaegers would spend 300 days out in the field and 60 days at the regiment.
He actually talked to a friend he grew up with who applied for the Jaeger corps after being (falsely) informed that those guys generally got better food. Well he was assigned to the Jaeger corps, spent the first day receiving his gear and the day after they were sent out in the woods, given a live chicken and were told to make lunch out of it haha

From there it’s become more or less a military fashion to wear your cap with a bent brim. It actually protects a bit better from the elements as well.

Of course the color it’s self should blend in but the whole idea of it is to “erase” the sharp contours with no room for missed areas of the body. You often see half suit, blanket suits or just a few stripes hanging on the sniper, this one fully covers the whole body and by that blends in to the nature. The winter one fully white looks a bit crazy, like chickens but in the winter landscape/nature they are gone.

    Translation.
The jägar battalion is the army's fore most section for fighting deep behind the enemy's possition.
The battalion has a highly developed capacity to work with high stammina within arctic, sub-arctic, wastland and in mountainous terrain.
The fighting in deep behind the enemy is a very valuable and necessary part of the brigade level of a fight.
It's primmarely about contributing to affecting the opponents capacity to do war by slowly but surely, breaking down their moral will, and physical ability to fight.
The jägar fighters contributes to preparing the opponent for a decisive end.
The jägar battles are faught in small but manouverable units that with different equipment and methods disturbs, hinders and harrasses the enemy's ability to fight.
By working deep behind the lines, the jägars continualy provide valueble information, on equipment, ability, and other important things that help the comander's situational awareness.
The jägar battalion is there fore also a wonderfull spying resource.
Knowledge of the terrain. The hidden nature of the battalion and the spread out operations means that the jägars can strike at any point in the enemy's army quickly, and with heavy force.
(some longer cinamatics, including snow mobiles)
The goals the jägar battalion is working towards can be the enemy's long range fighting systems, air deffence, supply routs, and supply depots. Everything acording to higher officer's prioreties.
In the long term this means that the enemy is forced to conduct counter operations. That pins reasorces and the freedom of action across the whole oppetative deapth.
(some more cinamatics, this time with shooting)
Except for conducting survalence and combat roles can the unit also do artillery and flight support.
In order for the jägars work to be conducted, organized and in order to build up further tollerance in form of, for example, qualified medicine, special and adapted support funktions are required. These funktions are included, funktionaly in a re-enfircement squadron within the battalion. Here you can find specialists and leadership, (samband????), alpine mobility, transport and maintnence of jägar groups.
The re-enfircement squadron is a part of the jägar battalion, and is needed for the jägar battalion to have full effect.
The jägar battalion is never visable to the opponent, but is creating a wide threat that dissables the opponents freedom of action, and it's moral will.
For opperational and tactical movement of the jägars, it's usualy a hellicopter that's used. Where both personel, supplies, and resources can be moved great disstances.
The jägar battalions core and tactical unit is the jägar platoon. It is an indipendent, tolerant and manouverable unit, that without re-supply works in harsh climates, and terrains.
The training to become a jägar soldier is both physicaly and mentaly tasking.
The sole jägar soldier is the jägar battalion's most important building block. There fore are both the physical and mental requirements very high.
    (sexy swedish swimming)

Here is a picture from when I was working at the Swedish Sniper course, you can see how the gillie suit actually do blend in a bit better. They can add material to it depending on what sort of area they operate in. Also it's about choosing your spot/ environment like in pic two.
Sweden has about 2700 Km's ( 1680 miles ) of coast so water is a huge element within the Swedish armed forces. There are jaeger/ jägare within all branches more or less. Marines/ Amphibious battalion got Kustjägare/ Coastal Rangers/ Commandos and UDT. Army got these guys in the video "Army ranger battalion" the K3's "Rangers" Army "Parachute Airborne Rangers" and Air force got their "Air base Rangers".
Swedish only Special Forces are the SOG "Special Operations Group" Särskilda operationsgruppen and some of these Ranger units do have some support or co-op with SOG though now SOG has developed their own support elements to cover all this, so the support from the different Ranger units are more or less gone.
Other then that a good video and I'm sure it would have given you more if it was in English or subtitled.

Yeah, my point with that with what camouflage you have you find the best spot for it. No matter what gillie suit you have or camouflage you use when moving or in the "wrong" environment you will be seen or it will look bad.
These colors used in the Swedish camouflage has been tested to be the best all around for the Swedish environment and since Sweden is a defensive country that only focus on defending the territory that is what they use. Sure there has been a "desert" uniform and "lighter" uniform developed for deploying on UN or International missions but fundamentally that pattern and those colors are what works best for Sweden.
People with far more grades and way higher pay grade then me figured that out ;)

E.g. a bad backpack can be all OD green fabric, green straps, green patches and all the different materials looks like it's the same green color through your eye and it blends in with the nature. But when you look at the backpack through night vision goggles the straps are now glowing and you look like a walking christmas three. The straps is reflecting way more IR than the rest of the materials and thats bad.

The temperature differs a lot more here than it usually does in the US. In the south, during summer, it can get as hot as +35-40°C and during winter we don't get as much snow but it's around 0°C and it sometimes rains and this can make it even more difficult to maneuver in this climate than in snow and -20°C.. In the north during winter it can get as cold as -50°C (schools and workplaces are still open, mind you) and even in the north during summer it sometimes gets +20-25°C.

    • @davidmartensson273
      @davidmartensson273 4 года назад

@choppa grizzly The difference is that you might get this difference in the same region depending on the season, not just geographic area, so within a few months you can go from -30 C to +20 C without having to travel which means that the troops have to be able to handle both as we do not decide when an enemy will show up. And they need to have equipment ready for both as well.
Sure USA has a wider range in total from northern Alaska to Miami or Hawaii, but not in the same area and also, since you are not really looking at land invasion, you have very different goals for your soldiers and can often use more specialized units that focus on one area to be exceedingly good at it and the choose the right unit for the situation.
In a defensive war, you do not get to choose as much :/

I love that you noticed the angle of the head gear.. this is actually a "natural" development because you normally keep your headcap in the left leg pocket (it's normally not allowed to wear headgear indoors), to make sure it fits there you basically fold the cap in 2 folds, the brim in one fold (which creates the angled look) and then the rest of the cap with the brim. so any long time routined swedish soldier will have the angled brim on their cap.

[00:17] The jägar battalion is the Army's foremost formation for combat in the depths of the opponent's grouping.
[00:25] The battalion has a specially developed ability to operate with high endurance in subarctic, desert, and mountain terrain.
[00:36] The battle in depth is a valuable and necessary complement to the brigades' battle.
[00:43] Ultimately, it is about influencing the opponent's ability to conduct warfare by degrading their moral and physical power in the long term.
[00:54] The jägar battle contributes to shaping the opponent for a decisive conclusion.
[01:05] The jägar battle is carried out with small and mobile units which, using various weapons and methods, interfere with, make difficult, and hinder the activities of the opponent.
[01:20] By operating in depth, jägarna continuously obtain information about the opponent, the terrain, or other conditions, thus contributing to the higher commander's situational awareness.
[01:34] The jägar battalion is therefore also an excellent intelligence resource.
[01:41] Terrain awareness - the hidden behavior combined with scattered grouping - helps the hunters to quickly and unexpectedly hit the opponent's boundary resources and ?? ?? goals far behind the front.
[02:33] The targets the jägar battalion is acting against may be the opponent's long-range combat systems, air defense, command sites, supply routes, and maintenance bases - all in accordance with the priorities of higher commanders.
[02:51] Soldier: It's lit here! (The fuze is lit!)
[03:13] In the long run, this contributes to the opponent being forced into countermeasures that bind resources and limit freedom of action over the entire operational depth.
[03:30] Soldier: Now in the field will be defensive charges - forward!
[03:35] Text: This side towards the enemy.
[03:58] In addition to solving reconnaissance and combat tasks, the platoon unit can also direct aircraft and artillery support.
[04:08] In order for the jägare's efforts to be led, coordinated, and to build further endurance - in the form of, for example, qualified medical care - special and specially adapted support functions are required.
[04:22] These functions are organizationally part of a reinforcement squadron in the battalion.
[04:28] Here are the specialists in management, communications, health care, alpine mobility, transport, and maintenance of jägar formations.
[04:40] The reinforcement squadron is part of the hunter battalion and is crucial for the jägar battalion system to reach full effect.
[05:05] The jägar battalion is never visible to the opponent but creates a breadth of threats that undermine the opponent's will and cripple his freedom of action.
[05:16] Soldier: I believe wind ?? ?? blows like three meters per second from ... eh ... three o'clock.
[05:23] For operational and tactical movements of jägar units, helicopters are often utilized where both personnel, equipment, and supplies can be lifted over large distances in a short time.
[06:08] The jägar battalion's core and foremost tactical unit is the jägar platoon.
[06:15] It is an easily mobile, independent, and enduring unit, which operates without the need for supplies under strenuous climates and terrain conditions.
[06:53] The training for jägar soldiers is long and both physically and mentally demanding.
[07:05] The individual jägar soldier is the jägar battalion's most important building block.
[07:11] Therefore, both the mental and physical demands of the individual are very high.
[07:56] The Army jägar battalion is versatile, enduring, and light - a unique resource at all levels of conflict.
[08:07] Small units, difficult conditions, great effect.

The swimming looks like what we did in second grade(8-9 years). Hopefully they have to swim longer distances.

In general what the narrator says is that the jägers purpose is to go in behind enemy lines, gather information, harass, destroy AA, radar, heavy equipment and confuse the enemy to that the main force can gain the upper hand.
Also on why they used AT4 (pansarskott) instead of Carl Gustaf. Carl Gustaf is a "support" weapon that a "pair" uses (like a light machine gun), one carries the launcher someone else carries the ammo. But AT4 is a more "general" weapon, almost everyone carries an AT4.

The suit is not only for camouflage, its reducing the bodyheat.

The ghillie: In sweden we make our own ghillies when at war, just like the camo on our helmets, we make them from real branshes etc.

In sweden we have many different types of Jägare which is important to point out. The ones in the video are the Artic jägare who´re mainly doing recon operations but also some DA. On the other hand their "cousins" are the airbourne assult rangers/jägare. These are a type of Jägare that focus on DA rather than recon. They can still solve the same type of mission but they´re specialized differently. Myself I´m from the latter. There are the parashute rangers, coastal rangers, air force rangers (list goes on). Of these the parashute and artic rangers are the more recon-oriented ones, the airbourne assult and coastal rangers are more DA and the air force rangers are more of a long range counter-sabotage/espionage group.
