    And don't take anything @downstaterADV says as fact. He's quite the joker. We paid hundreds of dollars for the boat not thousands. Lol. But I'm sure we'll definitely be into it for thousands when it's finally ready for the water. I will say it's an absolute joy putting time and money into this old homemade airboat and paying tribute to the previous owners work.

    Finally somebody who knows how to preload a wheel bearing. So many on RUclips set the preload way to tight. Best bet is to take the spacer/adapter off and put a quadrajet back on. If you ever want to learn how to tune a quadrajet, just ask me. I worked in a Cadillac dealership from 1979 on, so I defiantly know how to tune a quadrajet. I'm really interested in this build. Good chance this is a 472 not a 500.With the HEI distributor the only car that had the 500 was the Eldorado. Check the numbers! Either way that engine should have the torque to make that boat fly!

    • @scroungasworkshop4663
      @scroungasworkshop4663 2 года назад +2

      The Quadrajet was the best carby ever made in my opinion. Holleys tend to be more like a bucket tipping heaps of fuel in the engine but the Q-jet metering is just so variable they can run from a 253ci V8 up to a 500ci V8 and deliver outstanding performance, drivability and fuel economy but not a lot of people know how to set them up properly. We would usually look up the factory jets, metering rods and hangers for a particular cubic inch engine and go from there. Lots of fun times tuning them. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

    I noticed the prop is directly bolted to the crankshaft, prop's are not designed to turn more than about 2700 rpm. You would need to install a PSRU Propeller Speed Reduction Unit to be able to run the engine to redline and the prop at its max efficiency so just be careful running it as is

    • @gatorsaw3315
      @gatorsaw3315 2 года назад

      Its a caddy boat.. No need for gearbox. At 72 inches the prop can spin up to 3200rpms. More than enough to push that thing. But yes you dont want to spin it any faster. Caddys were made for low rpm. Unless its a built caddy you dont want to gearbox that engine for higher RPMs..

    It looks like a old Combee hull, the prop is marked on the side of the hub the size, be careful to duplicate the size due to you don't want to exceed 3000 rpms, for a ball park try some thing in a 72-40 prop size. Look on some airboat classified sites for a prop, they are a precision balanced item. Good luck

    That airboat was a spray rig. The pump unit and the aluminum structure was there to support a fluid tank.
    The engine is more likely a 472. Once it's running and has a prop (please get one for airboat usage) installed, as you apply throttle, you want to look and see if the crankshaft is moving in and out. This will tell you if the thrust bearing is worn out in the engine. You will see it. Cadillac 472's were good engines for the application this is in but the weak point is thrust load from the propeller. The engines were not designed for this type of wear.
    The prop. Please research and gain knowledge about airboat vs aircraft propellers. That aluminum prop was engineered for aircraft use and could be very dangerous. USE CAUTION.
    Prop speed is critical. These propellers lose thrust after a certain RPM. Automotive engine use is a very different design.
    Not that it matters but I'm skeptical about the "home built by the farmer". The title may tell.
    Best of luck and be safe. Respect this for how potentially dangerous airboats can be.

    • @zxggwrt
      @zxggwrt 2 года назад +1

    Back in the day the cheapest and best thing to use to clean out the motor inside was diesel. Doesnt how bad it was. always worked. Cut the ignition and just have it spinning over and replacing the diesel until it came out clean. It would clean all the oil passages as well. Pushrods. Diesel has its own lubricant in it so it would leave a flim on everything to help it from rusting as well on the inside. When done just toss in some cheap oil and let it rip. Obviously Diesel wasn't going to help a locked up motor. Love the videos btw 👍

    Caddy's are hard to identify from the outside. With the EGR intake it's probably a 73 to 76. The 472 was only made until 74. The best way I know to tell is to pull a spark plug and get that cylinder to bottom dead center and measure up to TDC. If it's around 4" its a 472. If it's around 4 1/3 its a 500. There is also a 425 made from 77 to 79. I hope it's not that.

    Saying that it’s rusty in the cylinders the farmer fix for that would be get it running and leave sit a full throttle until it runs clean😂

    Put a puffy couch back there for passenger seating. Find some chrome long tube headers for the exhaust. And a shiny chrome air cleaner and chrome valve covers. First class all the way. Also, the rudders? Do them with full coverage vinyl black with white pirate skull and cross bones! Ha.

      Great idea with the couch! I'll have to start keeping an eye out on trash nights.

    Chris NEVER ceases to amaze me! From the abandoned boats to that "Willy's?" Jeep (wow that's the most rusted thing I ever saw including the stuff "Restored" even does LOL). He's actually work a full time job as a Mechanic as well as doing all the insanely cool projects and work he does at home and for us on youtube. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Chris is what it means to me. Sock it to me, sock it to me! LOL. OH YEA! YEEEAAA! And BOYS respect your Grandma!

    A few years my foot. And we all know by now that a few years means 30. Seeing all that rust and the engine being locked, unless it sat in harsh conditions exposed to the elements, that thing has had to have sat for at least a minimum of 15 years. By my favorite line has to be "It was running when I parked it."
