As someone who’s tried control, and hates it with a passion even playing as a control deck... unless it doesn’t have countermagic, which I feel is the most broken mechanic in all of magic... I can only hope you only bring your control decks to a naturally competitive setting. It doesn’t feel good to me to torture people unless they’re worthy of being tortured, if that makes any sense - and the only people really worthy of being tortured in this game are the tryhards in competitive metas with copy paste decks and zero originality. I would enjoy playing a control deck against said people and relish torturing them, and that’s about it. If I’m playing it in any other setting I feel horrible for using it, and usually just concede and switch decks even if I’m winning, and if I’m up against it while using my casual fun decks, of course I’m going to rage - you play casual so you can play the game and have fun doing what you want to do, not so you can encounter competitive tryhards who want to play solitaire, torture you, and lock you out of the game. Let’s face it, there’s nothing original or creative or fun about control. You kill or remove everything they have or force them to play around you, and that’s only fun to do when you’re up against similarly boring meta decks like a typical mono red, or copypaste midrange adventures, or another control deck, or rogues, or whatever else is top notch in this game. I can sympathize with feeling at home torturing, but man, they have to be WORTHY of being tortured. It has to be a very competitive setting for control to be fun. Which CGB’s channel, granted, is. He plays mythic and climbs ladder, well no shit play control. That’s fine. Do what you have to do to win! If winning is the only objective. I have a very big problem with them in casual games. I don’t think control by its very nature is even remotely casual. It always tries to lock the other person out and kill them slowly. It doesn’t belong in casual games. Casual games are for bad decks, mediocre decks, janky decks, and people who want to have fun playing magic as a group with cute little things like flying squirrels or Turtle tribal or giving bad gifts or testing any number of alternative win conditions and untested synergies. In other words, that environment is absolutely no place for control. It just doesn’t belong. And I feel like there would be a lot less salt from everyone if we kept competitive decks in competitive metas where they belong - and if we could all just agree that there’s no such thing as a control deck that isn’t competitive. Oh yeah, I mentioned countermagic was broken I believe? At the cost range it absolutely is. I don’t understand why Wizards keeps making countermagic and thinks it’s okay to keep making it at low mana costs. Why? Well let’s have a look at what exactly countermagic does. The pro-counterspell players will probably say “it’s a card for a card, it’s fair game.” That fails to account for the circumstances of how it’s used. Let’s have a look at the card “Time Walk.” For one blue and one colorless mana, at sorcery speed, you get to take one extra turn. Wizards decided that that kind of effect was way too freaking powerful for the game, and it was banned and restricted to just the one copy for vintage. But... what does a counterspell do exactly in the early game? The original counterspell, worth two blue, or we’ll say Mana Leak, since that has the exact same cost as a Time Walk, what’s that do? Well, at instant speed on your opponent’s turn, you can stop them from making their play, then proceed to take another turn. In other words, a Mana Leak is an instant speed Time Walk that also deprives the opponent of a card in their hand that they presumably wanted to play. And no one’s gonna be able to pay that extra three mana for awhile, but by the time they do, you’ll just have another counter ready in all probability. Why did Wizards ban Time Walk as being clearly overpowered, then proceed to make several counterspells which are MUCH MUCH BETTER than Time Walk? It’s an instant speed Time Walk plus a free target discard, at the exact same price. Time Walk isn’t an instant and it doesn’t let you see any cards in your opponent’s hand. With a counterspell, you can see one, and remove it. It doesn’t make any damn sense to me how a counterspell is fair magic when a Time Walk isn’t. They could reprint Time Walk right now in standard and it wouldn’t break the format nearly as much as reprinting a Mana Leak would. The only thing you can do with a Time Walk that you can’t do with a Mana Leak is have a copy effect that does something. Like, if you copy an extra turn card to take two extra turns or more instead of one, then yes that’s better than a counterspell, but one for one, the counterspell is definitely just better. So even when I do build control and bring it to competitive, I hate countermagic and I never use it. I’ll go mono white boardwipes or Rakdos Discard/Destroy. If I do run blue then it’ll be something like cyclonic rift or a Stasis lockdown. Though I think Elesh Norn and Living Plane is a much better lock, and it’s not even in blue. I don’t dislike Blue by the way. Flavorfully, it’s actually one of my favorite colors. I just despise countermagic. :P
@@ryangainey94 I.. Hope you're kidding. Any 2 cmc counterspell is much worse than a time walk. Time walk draws you a card, gives you PW activations, a land drop, an attack step and no matter when you draw it, it will be good. Counterspells require you to be ahead. If you make your deck with 40 counters, one threat that slips through will kill you, plus, you need something that wins the game and lands so you may not even have enough counters for their threats. I'll never understand the argument that countering your spell is more "feelsbad" than a kill spell at the end of the phase, especially if the card doesn't have an ETB effect.
I love CGB's self-referential and slightly self-deprecating humor when he refers to himself as a "cocky punchable control mage". He has a good sense of humor and doesn't mind playing along and letting things slide. GOOD LUCK ON HITTING 100K! So close!
I feel like this intro had some of the most insightful dialogue regarding the deck/meta/ladder that I have seen from your content. I have really enjoyed watching your videos during quarantine, and would love to see more of that side of your MTG experience come out. Congratulations on 100K!
I think of an alternate universe where CGB plays nothing but mono red aggro. He changes one or two cards every day, still goes over his entire deck, and makes fun of every blue deck he encounters.
15:43 learning moment because I might think like the red mage that I get the token, but reading Skyclave apparition token goes to the card owner not controller, good to know.
Play queue algorithm is really interesting, the most mirror I played is when I play any sort or dimir rogue/control deck, like close to 80% I will face so sort of dimir deck, mostly rogue. Also face a lot of mirror match with mono red, colored ramp (temur/mono black/mono red) ramp or Gruul. However I almost never play into mirror match with colorless ramp, any sort of izzet deck (aggro, control, wizard, even mill), any kind of aura deck, counter deck, death touch deck or party deck. They usually just throw rogue, yorion or aggro deck at me.
That's because dimir, mono red, and ramps are meta decks and the algorithm can find similar opponents. Not many are playing the other decks you listed.
I'm still saving up wild cards for the Yorion Dimir deck because I'm just generally all about UB or UBx, but at this point I may as well sit on those wild cards and wait to see what, if anything, Kaldheim changes.
Almost a perfect speech "thank you all for everything" especially mono red players for being so bad. You missed that last part CGB, please don't forget it when you reach #1 Lots of faith in you and wish you lots of luck!!

Noob question: isn't taking the doom foretold with the apparition at 45:00 a bit of a misplay? Like if you get the birth you prevent the life AND you force the doom foretold to sack itself (It can't sacrifice tokens as far as I know). Please don't roast me if i'm wrong.

Congratulations on the rank man. Been watching you for a good while now. You have taught me much about being a disgusting control mage. Very proud to be a part of the cool kids club. Great job.
Hey CGB, ignore the haters, great content. Really enjoyed the logic behind your plays on this video. I think the deck's really cool, obviously mana base could use a little help but that will be helped greatly when we are blessed with the UW pathway in a couple weeks. Would also enjoy BO3 occasionally, but I also realize that with your pace of content production, doing BO3 would mean 2-3x the time for you to produce the content plus a lot of extra editing when waiting on opponents to sideboard. Keep it going man, and I hope you have a great New Year!
Is there any consideration to running one or two of the jeskai triome? Or is the late game draw enough that this isn’t worth the games you lose due to needing an untapped land?
My dream deck CGB! Good work, love it!!!! Do you think we can transform it to Bo3 version? Cutting banishing light, and 2 casket, and put 4 counters maybe?
Being able to reach mythic for the first time while being f2p felt good, this video came at the right time being in D3 and facing mostly mono red. Thank CGB!
Just coming back here from 2023 when the control meta is in some kind of trouble... we had amazing cards here, ECD, Skyclave, birth, omen, trawler... UW cntrl master CGB what can we do?
Watched another RUclipsr who played against this same deck and recognized it as a recent deck played by you by name. Not only do people clone your decks, others recognize them as your decks. In this case upon recognition he knew what cards to expect and to defend against.
in paper magic i play a deck like this, maybe 80% same cards in it. but in arena i would choose the dreamcrawler allways! maybe i would take some midnight clocks for the dreamtrawler, that could be nice^^ in paper magic i choose fairys of whishes 4 times, it makes so much more fun if you get anything for each situation out of the sideboard.
Thank you for the "play queue algorithm is different from the mythic queue algorithm" information. I've been wasting my time in play queue trying to get my daily wins so I'll be switching to my ranked queue instead. Might be less mirror matches there.
If you check somebody's hand like that, they should totally rope you. There isn't a strategic reason to not keep full control on all the time to prevent that, only one for the sake of convince and saving both players time. If you're taking advantage of the fact they aren't on full control because they don't want you to wait for no reason. They should punish you in a similar way that you're punishing them. Making their and your turns take longer.
i know play queue is built for mirrors or certain matchups, but ranked also seems to be... something. ive noticed now that i close out and bail from playing the rest of the day once i hit a gross losing streak, the next day ill be paired with all the decks/draws that give me basically autowin, regardless of what deck i play. but if ive been grinding all day consistently, ill run into my worst matchups only or my deck just mana screws/floods in a statistically improbable fashion (talking about like a 30 loss streak a few days ago due to the above rather than misplays) i dont think im bad, since i can usually anticipate what the opponent is going to do based on their behaviors up to that point, but yeah. /rant
Climbing a lot in two back to back videos. I guess playing the best decks pays off ;-) That play of Skyclave Apparition versus Robber of the Rich was genius btw, never thought about how that interaction would work.
You're right CGB, there is almost no enchantment removal. Mono red and gruul have nothing, dimir has bounce to counter, feed the swarm, and pharika's libation but those don't get played much, and mono white has apparition and banishing light, both of which will probably have better targets. In conclusion, enigmatic incarnation is hard to remove and a very powerful card. It's almost like a free-to-activate birthing pod. But NOBODY plays it! I can't understand!
Teferi is a pretty sweet card i like the card selection and the ability to protect himself and potentially others with the minus 3. Ive been playing a superfriends deck for a few days and the number of times teferi has saved my other walkers with his neg 3 is just insane
If you're into historic there are a couple budget mono blue decks making the rounds right now. Mono blue tempo and mill, neither have to run rares or mythics to be effective
The only reason to watch a yt video with this deck is CGB himself. :-) These decks are basically "do nothing -> waste time without having any kind of fun -> win" I don't like them. But CGB is worthy a watch anyway :-)
Regarding making a deck good; - play it through a gauntlet, with a friend playing the other strong decks in the meta... then swap. and play each of those decks, with your friend playing your pet deck. - So you understand the weaknesses of it.
Does mtga not match you vs a similar deck? If I go black green removal I face the same, white blue control, again I see this instead. I guess at higher ranks they can't do that due to limited pool bit for the rest us, tell me I'm not crazy and we get pooled vs similar decks usually
This is a great deck, I just don’t understand the game enough to get the 100% win rate. I am up to 50% though as I learn. One of the things I don’t understand is how the temple of enlightenment works. I can’t just add a mana in the way I thought it works. It puts a little icon of a drop or light above my characters head. What does that mean?
banishing light is better in BO1 - this is a really good point. Also, i'm the sleeper dart guy, and i need to say that having a few spare darts on the board is really painful for dream trawler.

Watched another RUclipsr who played against this same deck and recognized it as a recent deck played by you by name. Not only do people clone your decks, others recognize them as your decks. In this case upon recognition he knew what cards to expect and to defend against.
how does the skyclave -> BOM work? how does he get the token?
in paper magic i play a deck like this, maybe 80% same cards in it. but in arena i would choose the dreamcrawler allways! maybe i would take some midnight clocks for the dreamtrawler, that could be nice^^ in paper magic i choose fairys of whishes 4 times, it makes so much more fun if you get anything for each situation out of the sideboard.
Congratulations on the top 10. You certainly deserve it, and thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Anyway we can get "standard" or "historic" somewhere in the title or description?
How do you get to mythic? I can never get out of diamond. Diamond 2 is the highest i have gotten in a season :(
Thank you for the "play queue algorithm is different from the mythic queue algorithm" information.
Why would he run shatter the sky instead of wrath of god, when theyre both board wipes but one gives the oppenents cards?
Top 10 CGB! Congrats! Can't wait to see if you keep climbing tomorrow. Get hype!
いつも日本から見させてもらっています。あなたの動画はとても参考になります。おめでとうございます!
1:00:51 That cutting board design looks similar to the Cardcaptor Sakura Sun-Moon-Star Symbol
Great job! Thanks to this awesome content! Watching how aggro mages suffer is best thing on RUclips!
i know play queue is built for mirrors or certain matchups, but ranked also seems to be... something. ive noticed now that i close out and bail from playing the rest of the day once i hit a gross losing streak, the next day ill be paired with all the decks/draws that give me basically autowin, regardless of what deck i play. but if ive been grinding all day consistently, ill run into my worst matchups only or my deck just mana screws/floods in a statistically improbable fashion (talking about like a 30 loss streak a few days ago due to the above rather than misplays)
i dont think im bad, since i can usually anticipate what the opponent is going to do based on their behaviors up to that point, but yeah. /rant
Congrats on your best rank so far, CGB! That gift at the end is indeed beautiful.
Climbing a lot in two back to back videos. I guess playing the best decks pays off ;-)
That play of Skyclave Apparition versus Robber of the Rich was genius btw, never thought about how that interaction would work.
I tried to play artisan curses in the recent historic shake up event. I got a few wins and I had a lot of fun without playing the “best” cards.
Merry Christmas happy new year Cgb congratulations on the rank that’s awesome thank you for the content !
Comment for the algorithm. This was the control deck the fans want to see! Congratulations are in order!
I can't understand!
cgb seems so happy and not salty... Something feels wrong, but like in a good way
Teferi is a pretty sweet card i like the card selection and the ability to protect himself and potentially others with the minus 3. Ive been playing a superfriends deck for a few days and the number of times teferi has saved my other walkers with his neg 3 is just insane
Went 5-1 in diamond. Very solid list thank you. Btw lost against cycling probably one of the worst match ups?
39:22 why enemy dont block with 3/3 ? he think controll decks buff their creatures ?
Great video! I hit mythic for the first time today, thanks for making me a better player
"Red mages....never surrender...they are like food for the soul" quote of the century
Love your content
Can you please do a budget deck because I’m always wanting to make your decks and don’t have the wildcards.
Also #9 great job
Cycle. Competitive and budget friendly ;-) c u in da battlefield
prepare for: "just play cycling, lul" comments
just play cycling, lul
Check out @hellogoodgame
If you're into historic there are a couple budget mono blue decks making the rounds right now. Mono blue tempo and mill, neither have to run rares or mythics to be effective
The only reason to watch a yt video with this deck is CGB himself. :-) These decks are basically "do nothing -> waste time without having any kind of fun -> win" I don't like them. But CGB is worthy a watch anyway :-)
I love your content cgb entertaining and thoughtful as always. Just thanks.
"Hey, it's Arena! It's a whole new world of esports!"
Top 10 well deserved for the #1 MTG Arena streamer.
Just so everyone knows, I did not send that gift
underrated
This is a great deck, I just don’t understand the game enough to get the 100% win rate. I am up to 50% though as I learn. One of the things I don’t understand is how the temple of enlightenment works. I can’t just add a mana in the way I thought it works. It puts a little icon of a drop or light above my characters head. What does that mean?
that icon is a mana, temple should work exactly like a regular land
banishing light is better in BO1 - this is a really good point. Also, i'm the sleeper dart guy, and i need to say that having a few spare darts on the board is really painful for dream trawler.
Hey CGB, it was awesome seeing the Charcuterie board we sent on the stream today, hope you and the wife enjoy it! If you ever need anything else, contact me on Instagram at @the_wood_wraith
I made a deck with dream traller and approach of the second son for historic. I rank platinum 4, it was my first time over silver rank XD azorius control are really cool :)
Phase out the savior use the shatter?
Can someone please explain to me scatter the sky over wrath of god?
Wrath isn't in standard, only historic
@@mattd3978 not gonna lie it doesn't say standard anywhere and I just assumed this was historic. Ty.
@@42sporks5 no problem, just so you know, when you swing by this channel CGB plays almost exclusively standard on this channel. Sometimes if an old card comes into historic he'll divert for an episode.
But give him a sub for a week or two. New stuff everyday, control-minded commentary and gameplay on current decks and some brews here and there. I generally like dealing with folks in the comments around here too
@@mattd3978 ironically first video i watched was a colorless deck lol so it popped up in my feed. Not much into standard until kaldiem if I'm honest. I do like brews though.
@@42sporks5 cool, he did quite a few recently with Yorion. Doing stuff you really shouldn't be doing like mono black Yorion, mono red Yorion, just to get his favorite card in more stuff
Congratulations on #9!!!! Lets get to #1 before Dec 31st???
I BELIEVE IN YOU CGB
I’m going main Azorius instead Dimir. What do you think? Which is better?
I started my magic career loving Azorius, but I've since gone Dimir. Part of that's just change in my general outlook on things, but I must say in this meta it seems like Dimir is better positioned for the moment
Congrats brother, I couldn't break into mythic no matter what I did or what deck I used. It just wouldn't let me...
congrats and merry christmas cgb
CGB, you are so good at what you do. It's a pleasure following you. Blessings.
3:28 Meanwhile me using Banishing Light as a budget Skyclave Apparition 😥😢😭
I swear to god, both those red mages in a row, have to be memeing. They saw they were vs CGB so they decided to troll every single play they could. Cast a birth, let the skyclave exile his own birth, banishing light the birth over the blocker. Red mages...
First, and will be the first to stay til the end. Because it be like that sometimes
Dream Trawler = the ultimate stabilizer
One of your best brews Ive seen since I started following . Like it alot
But does it beat ROGUES?
tom the turkey puts up the xmas decorations and the easter bunny takes them down
I always create decks outside meta and design them myself (not from list) to counter most meta decks. (removals, removals, removals+ card drawing)
Meta decklist: aggro/ control/ combo decks are Cancer, but it feels good to win them with unconventional decks
However its impressive nevertheless to reach far enough, and to defeat similar decks
Love this deck
Someone has worked a kaldheim updated version ?
